Thermodynamic formalism for hyperbolic random dynamical systems

We develop thermodynamic formalism for random Anosov maps and uniformly H\"older random potentials. We assume uniform fibre hyperbolicity given by deterministic invariant cone fields, a one-dimensional stable direction, and a fibrewise mixing condition whose mixing time may depend on the base point. To do so, we construct adapted projective cones for the random Perron--Frobenius cocycle and prove that the cocycle contracts the associated Hilbert projective metrics. This allows us to construct a $\mathbb P$-relative equilibrium state, prove its uniqueness, and establish quenched exponential decay of correlations.

Keplerian shear for Chacon Transformations

The concept of keplerian shear was introduced by Damien Thomine recently. It is useful for non ergodic systems, and can be seen as strong mixing conditionally on invariant fibers. The notion is particularly interesting when a.e. fiber is not strongly mixing. We develop here an approach appropriate for systems such that a.e. fiber is weakly mixing, and apply it to a family of rank one transformations. Each transformation is a kind of Chacon map, built with a random number of spacers at each step of the Rochklin tower. We prove that this new dynamical system exhibits keplerian shear. The method relies on a version of a local limit theorem for time dependent Birkhoff sums along the fullshift.

Quenched invariance principle with a rate for random dynamical systems

In this paper, we consider the quenched invariance principle for random Young towers driven by an ergodic system. In particular, we obtain the Wassertein convergence rate in the quenched invariance principle. As a key ingredient, we derive a new martingale-coboundary decomposition for the random tower map, which provides a good control over sums of squares of the approximating martingale. We apply our results to a class of random dynamical systems that admit a random Young tower, such as independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) translations of Viana maps, intermittent maps of the interval and small random perturbations of Anosov maps with an ergodic driving system.

Quantitative recurrence for $T,T^{-1}$ tranformation

We are interested in the study of the asymptotic behaviour of return times in small balls for the $T,T^{-1}$-transformation. We exhibit different asymptotic behaviours (different scaling, different limit point process) depending on the respective dimensions of the measures of the two underlying dynamical systems. It behaves either as for the direct product of the underlying systems, or as for the Z-extension of the driving system (also studied in this article), or as a more sophisticated process.

Keplerian shear with Rajchman property

The Keplerian shear was introduced within the context of measure preserving dynamical systems by Damien Thomine, as a version of mixing for non ergodic systems. In this study we provide a characterization of the Keplerian shear using Rajchman measure, for some flows on tori bundles. Our work applies to dynamical systems with singularities or with non-absolutely continuous measures. We relate the speed of decay of conditional correlations with the Rajchman order of the measures. Some of these results are extended to the case of compact Lie group bundles.

Topological synchronisation or a simple attractor?

A few recent papers introduced the concept of topological synchronisation. We refer in particular to \cite{TS}, where the theory was illustrated by means of a skew product system, coupling two logistic maps. In this case, we show that the topological synchronisation could be easily explained as the birth of an attractor for increasing values of the coupling strength and the mutual convergence of two marginal empirical measures. Numerical computations based on a careful analysis of the Lyapunov exponents suggest that the attractor supports an absolutely continuous physical measure (acpm). We finally show that for some unimodal maps such acpm exhibit a multifractal structure.

Application of the convergence of the spatio-temporal processes for visits to small sets

The goal of this article is to point out the importance of spatio-temporal processes in different questions of quantitative recurrence. We focus on applications to the study of the number of visits to a small set before the first visit to another set (question arising from a previous work by Kifer and Rapaport), the study of high records, the study of line processes, the study of the time spent by a flow in a small set. We illustrate these applications by results on billiards or geodesic flows. This paper contains in particular new result of convergence in distribution of the spatio temporal processes associated to visits by the Sinai billiard flow to a small neighbourhood of orbitrary points in the billiard domain.

Spatio-temporal Poisson processes for visits to small sets

For many measure preserving dynamical systems $(\Omega,T,m)$ the successive hitting times to a small set is well approximated by a Poisson process on the real line. In this work we define a new process obtained from recording not only the successive times $n$ of visits to a set $A$, but also the position $T^n(x)$ in $A$ of the orbit, in the limit where $m(A)\to0$. We obtain a convergence of this process, suitably normalized, to a Poisson point process in time and space under some decorrelation condition. We present several new applications to hyperbolic maps and SRB measures, including the case of a neighborhood of a periodic point, and some billiards such as Sinai billiards, Bunimovich stadium and diamond billiard.

Large deviation for return times

We prove a large deviation result for return times of the orbits of a dynamical system in a $r$-neighbourhood of an initial point $x$. Our result may be seen as a differentiable version of the work by Jain and Bansal who considered the return time of a stationary and ergodic process defined in a space of infinite sequences.

Exponential law for random subshifts of finite type

In this paper we study the distribution of hitting times for a class of random dynamical systems. We prove that for invariant measures with super-polynomial decay of correlations hitting times to dynamically defined cylinders satisfy exponential distribution. Similar results are obtained for random expanding maps. We emphasize that what we establish is a quenched exponential law for hitting times.

Poisson law for some nonuniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems with polynomial rate of mixing

We consider some nonuniformly hyperbolic invertible dynamical systems which are modeled by a Gibbs-Markov-Young tower. We assume a polynomial tail for the inducing time and a polynomial control of hyperbolicity, as introduced by Alves, Pinheiro and Azevedo. These systems admit a physical measure with polynomial rate of mixing. In this paper we prove that the distribution of the number of visits to a ball B(x, r) converges to a Poisson distribution as the radius r $\to$ 0 and after suitable normalization.

Hitting and returning into rare events for all alpha-mixing processes

We prove that for any $α$-mixing stationnary process the hitting time of any $n$-string $A_n$ converges, when suitably normalized, to an exponential law. We identify the normalization constant $λ(A_n)$. A similar statement holds also for the return time. To establish this result we prove two other results of independent interest. First, we show a relation between the rescaled hitting time and the rescaled return time, generalizing a theorem by Haydn, Lacroix and Vaienti. Second, we show that for positive entropy systems, the probability of observing any $n$-string in $n$ consecutive observations, goes to zero as $n$ goes to infinity.

Central limit theorem for dimension of Gibbs measures for skew expanding maps

We consider a class of non-conformal expanding maps on the $d$-dimensional torus. For an equilibrium measure of an Hölder potential, we prove an analogue of the Central Limit Theorem for the fluctuations of the logarithm of the measure of balls as the radius goes to zero. An unexpected consequence is that when the measure is not absolutely continuous, then half of the balls of radius $\eps$ have a measure smaller than $\eps^δ$ and half of them have a measure larger than $\eps^δ$, where $δ$ is the Hausdorff dimension of the measure. We first show that the problem is equivalent to the study of the fluctuations of some Birkhoff sums. Then we use general results from probability theory as the weak invariance principle and random change of time to get our main theorem. Our method also applies to conformal repellers and Axiom A surface diffeomorphisms and possibly to a class of one-dimensional non uniformly expanding maps. These generalizations are presented at the end of the paper.

Back to balls in billiards

We consider a billiard in the plane with periodic configuration of convex scatterers. This system is recurrent, in the sense that almost every orbit comes back arbitrarily close to the initial point. In this paper we study the time needed to get back in an r-ball about the initial point, in the phase space and also for the position, in the limit when r->0. We establish the existence of an almost sure convergence rate, and prove a convergence in distribution for the rescaled return times.

Poincaré recurrence for observations

A high dimensional dynamical system is often studied by experimentalists through the measurement of a relatively low number of different quantities, called an observation. Following this idea and in the continuity of Boshernitzan's work, for a measure preserving system, we study Poincaré recurrence for the observation. The link between the return time for the observation and the Hausdorff dimension of the image of the invariant measure is considered. We prove that when the decay of correlations is super polynomial, the recurrence rates for the observations and the pointwise dimensions relatively to the push-forward are equal.

Quantitative recurrence in two-dimensional extended processes

Under some mild condition, a random walk in the plane is recurrent. In particular each trajectory is dense, and a natural question is how much time one needs to approach a given small neighborhood of the origin. We address this question in the case of some extended dynamical systems similar to planar random walks, including $\ZZ^2$-extension of hyperbolic dynamics. We define a pointwise recurrence rate and relate it to the dimension of the process, and establish a convergence in distribution of the rescaled return times near the origin.

Recurrence rate in rapidly mixing dynamical systems

For measure preserving dynamical systems on metric spaces we study the time needed by a typical orbit to return back close to its starting point. We prove that when the decay of correlation is super-polynomial the recurrence rates and the pointwise dimensions are equal. This gives a broad class of systems for which the recurrence rate equals the Hausdorff dimension of the invariant measure.
