Symmetry breaking differential operators and Discrete Series

For a semisimple Lie group $G$ satisfying the equal rank condition, the most basic family of unitary irreducible representations is the Discrete Series found by Harish-Chandra. In this paper, we study the structure of symmetry breaking operators for Discrete Series when restricted to a subgroup $H$ of the same type by combining classical results with recent work of T. Kobayashi, Nakahama and Pevzner. This we do by using reproducing kernels for the representations and our previous duality principle in order to find some explicit details on the nature of the differential operators representing symmetry breaking operators, in particular to what extent they are given by differentiations in normal directions to the $H$-orbit in $G/K$.

On the intertwining differential operators between vector bundles over the real projective space of dimension two

The main objective of this paper is twofold. One is to classify and construct $SL(3,\mathbb{R})$-intertwining differential operators between vector bundles over the real projective space $\mathbb{RP}^2$. It turns out that two kinds of operators appear. We call them Cartan operators and PRV operators. The second objective is then to study the representations realized on the kernel of those operators both in the smooth and holomorphic setting. A key machinery is the BGG resolution. In particular, by exploiting some results of Davidson-Enright-Stanke and Enright-Joseph, the irreducible unitary highest weight modules of $SU(1,2)$ at the (first) reduction points are classified by the image of Cartan operators and kernel of PRV operators.

Branching laws and a duality principle, Part I

For a semisimple Lie group $G$ satisfying the equal rank condition, the most basic family of unitary irreducible representations is the Discrete Series found by Harish-Chandra. In this paper, we continue our study of the branching laws for Discrete Series when restricted to a subgroup $H$ of the same type by use of integral and differential operators in combination with our previous duality principle. Many results are presented in generality, others are shown in detail for Holomorphic Discrete Series.

On the intertwining differential operators from a line bundle to a vector bundle over the real projective space

We classify and construct $SL(n,\mathbb{R})$-intertwining differential operators $\mathcal{D}$ from a line bundle to a vector bundle over the real projective space $\mathbb{RP}^{n-1}$ by the F-method. This generalizes a classical result of Bol for $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$. Further, we classify the $K$-type formulas for the kernel $\text{Ker}(\mathcal{D})$ and image $\text{Im}(\mathcal{D})$ of $\mathcal{D}$. The standardness of the homomorphisms $φ$ corresponding to the differential operators $\mathcal{D}$ between generalized Verma modules are also discussed.

The holomorphic discrete series contribution to the generalized Whittaker Plancherel formula

For a Hermitian Lie group $G$ of tube type we find the contribution of the holomorphic discrete series to the Plancherel decomposition of the Whittaker space $L^2(G/N,ψ)$, where $N$ is the unipotent radical of the Siegel parabolic subgroup and $ψ$ is a certain non-degenerate unitary character on $N$. The holomorphic discrete series embeddings are constructed in terms of generalized Whittaker vectors for which we find explicit formulas in the bounded domain realization, the tube domain realization and the $L^2$-model of the holomorphic discrete series. Although $L^2(G/N,ψ)$ does not have finite multiplicities in general, the holomorphic discrete series contribution does. Moreover, we obtain an explicit formula for the formal dimensions of the holomorphic discrete series embeddings, and we interpret the holomorphic discrete series contribution to $L^2(G/N,ψ)$ as boundary values of holomorphic functions on a domain $Ξ$ in a complexification $G_{\mathbb{C}}$ of $G$ forming a Hardy type space $\mathcal{H}_2(Ξ,ψ)$.

Pseudo-dual pairs and branching of Discrete Series

For a semisimple Lie group $G$, we study Discrete Series representations with admissible branching to a symmetric subgroup $H$. This is done using a canonical associated symmetric subgroup $H_0$, forming a pseudo-dual pair with $H$, and a corresponding branching law for this group with respect to its maximal compact subgroup. This is in analogy with either Blattner's or Kostant-Heckmann multiplicity formulas, and has some resemblance to Frobenius reciprocity. We give several explicit examples and links to Kobayashi-Pevzner theory of symmetry breaking and holographic operators. Our method is well adapted to computer algorithms, such as for example the Atlas program.

The holomorphic discrete series contribution to the generalized Whittaker Plancherel formula II. Non-tube type groups

For every simple Hermitian Lie group $G$, we consider a certain maximal parabolic subgroup whose unipotent radical $N$ is either abelian (if $G$ is of tube type) or two-step nilpotent (if $G$ is of non-tube type). By the generalized Whittaker Plancherel formula we mean the Plancherel decomposition of $L^2(G/N,ω)$, the space of square-integrable sections of the homogeneous vector bundle over $G/N$ associated with an irreducible unitary representation $ω$ of $N$. Assuming that the central character of $ω$ is contained in a certain cone, we construct embeddings of all holomorphic discrete series representations of $G$ into $L^2(G/N,ω)$ and show that the multiplicities are equal to the dimensions of the lowest $K$-types. The construction is in terms of a kernel function which can be explicitly defined using certain projections inside a complexification of $G$. This kernel function carries all information about the holomorphic discrete series embedding, the lowest $K$-type as functions on $G/N$, as well as the associated Whittaker vectors.

Generalized Laguerre functions and Whittaker vectors for holomorphic discrete series

We study degenerate Whittaker vectors in scalar type holomorphic discrete series representations of tube type Hermitian Lie groups and their analytic continuation. In four different realizations, the bounded domain picture, the tube domain picture, the $L^2$-model and the Fock model, we find their explicit $K$-type expansions. The coefficients are expressed in terms of the generalized Laguerre functions on the corresponding symmetric cone, and we relate the $K$-type expansions to the formula for the generating function of the Laguerre polynomials and to their recurrence relations.

Standard subspaces of Hilbert spaces of holomorphic functions on tube domains

In this article we study standard subspaces of Hilbert spaces of vector-valued holomorphic functions on tube domains E + i C^0, where C \subeq E is a pointed generating cone invariant under e^{R h} for some endomorphism h \in \End(E), diagonalizable with the eigenvalues 1,0,-1 (generalizing a Lorentz boost). This data specifies a wedge domain W(E,C,h) \subeq E and one of our main results exhibits corresponding standard subspaces as being generated using test functions on these domains. We also investigate aspects of reflection positivity for the triple (E,C,e^{πi h}) and the support properties of distributions on E, arising as Fourier transforms of operator-valued measures defining the Hilbert spaces H. For the imaginary part of these distributions, we find similarities to the well known Huygens' principle, relating to wedge duality in the Minkowski context. Interesting examples are the Riesz distributions associated to euclidean Jordan algebras.

Classification of $K$-type formulas for the Heisenberg ultrahyperbolic operator $\square_s$ for $\widetilde{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ and tridiagonal determinants for local Heun functions

The $K$-type formulas of the space of $K$-finite solutions to the Heisenberg ultrahyperbolic equation $\square_sf=0$ for the non-linear group $\widetilde{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ are classified. This completes a previous study of Kable for the linear group $SL(m,\mathbb{R})$ in the case of $m=3$, as well as generalizes our earlier results on a certain second order differential operator. As a by-product we also show several properties of certain sequences $\{P_j(x;y)\}_{j=0}^\infty$ and $\{Q_j(x;y)\}_{j=0}^\infty$ of tridiagonal determinants, whose generating functions are given by local Heun functions. In particular, it is shown that these sequences satisfy a certain arithmetic-combinatorial property, which we refer to as a palindromic property. We further show that classical sequences of Cayley continuants $\{\mathrm{Cay}_j(x;y)\}_{j=0}^\infty$ and Krawtchouk polynomials $\{\mathcal{K}_j(x;y)\}_{j=0}^\infty$ also admit this property. In the end a new proof of Sylvester's formula for certain tridiagonal determinant $\mathrm{Sylv}(x;n)$ is provided from a representation theory point of view.

The compact picture of symmetry breaking operators for rank one orthogonal and unitary groups

We present a method to calculate intertwining operators between the underlying Harish-Chandra modules of degenerate principal series representations of a semisimple Lie group $G$ and a semisimple subgroup $G'$, and between their composition factors. Our method describes the restriction of these operators to the $K'$-isotypic components, $K'\subseteq G'$ a maximal compact subgroup, and reduces the representation theoretic problem to an infinite system of scalar equations of a combinatorial nature. For rank one orthogonal and unitary groups and spherical principal series representations we calculate these relations explicitly and use them to classify intertwining operators. We further show that in these cases automatic continuity holds, i.e. every intertwiner between the Harish-Chandra modules extends to an intertwiner between the Casselman--Wallach completions, verifying a conjecture by Kobayashi. Altogether, this establishes the compact picture of the recently studied symmetry breaking operators for orthogonal groups by Kobayashi--Speh, gives new proofs of their main results and extends them to unitary groups.

Knapp-Stein Type Intertwining Operators for Symmetric Pairs II. -- The Translation Principle and Intertwining Operators for Spinors

For a symmetric pair $(G,H)$ of reductive groups we extend to a large class of generalized principal series representations our previous construction of meromorphic families of symmetry breaking operators. These operators intertwine between a possibly vector-valued principal series of $G$ and one for $H$ and are given explicitly in terms of their integral kernels. As an application we give a complete classification of symmetry breaking operators from spinors on a Euclidean space to spinors on a hyperplane, intertwining for a double cover of the conformal group of the hyperplane.

Enhanced zeta distributions and its functional equations

We consider an ``enhanced symmetric space'', which is a prehomogeneous vector space. This vector space is intimately related to a double flag variety studied in \cite{NO.2018}. On a distinguished open orbit called ``enhanced positive cone'', we consider a zeta integral with two complex variables, which is analytically continued to meromorphic family of tempered distributions. One of the main results of this paper is to establish a precise formula for the meromorphic continuation which clarifies the location of poles (and may be useful to obtain residues). We also compute the Fourier transform of the zeta distribution and obtain a functional equation with explicit gamma factors.

An extension problem related to the fractional Branson-Gover operators

The Branson-Gover operators are conformally invariant differential operators of even degree acting on differential forms. They can be interpolated by a holomorphic family of conformally invariant integral operators called fractional Branson-Gover operators. For Euclidean spaces we show that the fractional Branson-Gover operators can be obtained as Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators of certain conformally invariant boundary value problems, generalizing the work of Caffarelli-Silvestre for the fractional Laplacians to differential forms. The relevant boundary value problems are studied in detail and we find appropriate Sobolev type spaces in which there exist unique solutions and obtain the explicit integral kernels of the solution operators as well as some of its properties.

On the space of $K$-finite solutions to intertwining differential operators

In this paper we give Peter-Weyl type formulas for the space of $K$-finite solutions to intertwining differential operators between degenerate principal series representations. Our results generalize a result of Kable for conformally invariant systems. The main idea is based on the duality theorem between intertwining differential operators and homomorphisms between generalized Verma modules. As an application we uniformly realize on the solution spaces of intertwining differential operators all small representations of $\widetilde{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ attached to the minimal nilpotent orbit.

The symplectic area of a geodesic triangle in a Hermitian symmetric space of compact type

Let $M$ be an irreducible Hermitian symmetric space of compact type, and let $ω$ be its Kähler form. For a triplet $(p_1,p_2,p_3)$ of points in $M$ we study conditions under which a geodesic triangle $\mathcal T(p_1,p_2,p_3)$ with vertices $p_1,p_2,p_3$ can be unambiguously defined. We consider the integral $A(p_1,p_2,p_3)=\int_Σω$, where $Σ$ is a surface filling the triangle $\mathcal T(p_1,p_2,p_3)$ and discuss the dependence of $A(p_1,p_2,p_3)$ on the surface $Σ$. Under mild conditions on the three points, we prove an explicit formula for $A(p_1,p_2,p_3)$ analogous to the known formula for the symplectic area of a geodesic triangle in a non-compact Hermitian symmetric space.

Bernstein-Sato identities and conformal symmetry breaking operators

We present Bernstein-Sato identities for scalar-, spinor- and differential form-valued distribution kernels on Euclidean space associated to conformal symmetry breaking operators. The associated Bernstein-Sato operators lead to partially new formulae for conformal symmetry breaking differential operators on functions, spinors and differential forms.
