New sharp lifespan estimates for a semilinear heat equation with zero-mass sign-changing initial data

We consider the Cauchy problem $$u_t-Δu=|u|^p,\qquad (t,x)\in(0,T)\times\R^n, \quad u(0,x)=\eps u_0(x),\qquad x\in\R^n,$$ with small sign-changing initial data having zero total mass. We assume $$u_0\in L^1(\R^n)\cap L^\infty(\R^n),\quad |x|u_0\in L^1(\R^n),\quad \int_{\R^n}u_0(x)\,dx=0,$$ and, for the sharp subcritical upper bounds, that $\int_{\R^n}x\,u_0(x)\,dx\neq0.$ Let $T_\eps$ denote the maximal lifespan. We identify a new transition exponent $p_m=1+\frac1{n+1}$ inside the Fujita range $1<p\le p_F:=1+2/n$, and establish the sharp lifespan estimates $$T_\eps\asymp \begin{cases} \eps^{-\frac{2(p-1)}{2-(n+1)(p-1)}}, &1<p<p_m,\\[2mm] \eps^{-\frac2{n+1}} \bigl(\log\frac1\eps\bigr)^{-\frac2{n+2}}, &p=p_m,\\[2mm] \eps^{-p\left(\frac{1}{p-1}-\frac{n}{2}\right)^{-1}}, &p_m<p<p_F,\\[2mm] \exp\!\left(\eps^{-p(p-1)}\right), & p=p_F. \end{cases}$$ These estimates reveal a lifespan phenomenon that is different from the classical Lee--Ni law for initial data with positive mass. In the zero-mass setting, the leading linear contribution is dipole-like, while the nonlinear source subsequently generates a positive mass of size \(O(\eps^p)\). Their competition produces the additional threshold \(p_m\), the logarithmic correction at $p=p_m$, and, at $p=p_F$, a substantially longer critical lifespan with exponent $p_F(p_F-1)$ instead of the classical Lee--Ni exponent $p_F-1$. The upper estimates are obtained by backward-Gaussian and critical scale-ODE test-function arguments, whereas the lower estimates follow from a unified $L^1$--$L^\infty$ bootstrap preserving the zero-mass cancellation of the linear flow and controlling the mass generated by the nonlinear source. Thus, although $p_F$ remains the Fujita critical exponent, zero initial mass creates a new quantitative lifespan regime below and at the critical exponent.

Sharp Lifespan Estimates and Fujita Phenomena for Fractional Hardy-Hénon Type Parabolic Equations

We study the lifespan of mild solutions to the fractional semilinear parabolic Cauchy problem with a Hardy--Hénon-type weight \[ u_t + (-Δ)^s u = |x|^{-γ}\,|u|^p, \qquad (t,x)\in(0,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}^N, \qquad u(0,x)=\varepsilon\,u_0(x), \] where $0 1$ and $u_0\in L^1\cap L^\infty$ with $\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}u_0(x)\,dx>0$. Setting \[ p_F \;:=\; 1+\frac{2s-γ}{N}, \] we prove that the lifespan $T_\varepsilon$ obeys, for every sufficiently small $\varepsilon>0$, \[ T_\varepsilon \;\approx\; \begin{cases} \varepsilon^{-\,β^{-1}},& 1 p_F, \end{cases} \qquad β\;=\;\frac{(2s-γ)-N(p-1)}{2s(p-1)}. \] The lower bound rests on fractional heat-kernel estimates and an $L^1$--$L^\infty$ Hardy-type interpolation inequality; the upper bound is obtained by testing the equation against the backward fractional heat kernel, a globally defined positive weight for which $(-Δ)^s$ is controlled everywhere and the linear terms cancel identically by self-adjointness. This circumvents the compactly supported cutoffs of the classical test-function method, which are incompatible with a nonlocal operator. The exponent $β$ is sharp; for $γ=0$ it reduces to the fractional Lee--Ni exponent $\frac{1}{p-1}-\frac{N}{2s}$. To the best of our knowledge, these results are new even for $γ=0.$ We also establish a large-data lifespan law, sharp lower bounds on the blow-up rate together with a conditional Type-I upper bound, a conditional self-similar profile result.

A note on lifespan estimates for higher-order parabolic equations

We investigate the lifespan of solutions to the higher-order semilinear parabolic equation $$u_t+(-Δ)^m u=|u|^p, \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^n, t>0 $$ with initial data. We focus on the precise asymptotic behavior of the lifespan of nontrivial solutions. By combining the test function method and semigroup estimates, we derive both upper and lower bounds for the lifespan of solutions $$T_{\varepsilon} \simeq \left\{\begin{array}{l}\varepsilon^{-\left(\frac{1}{p-1}-\frac{n}{2m}\right)^{-1}}, \,\, 1<p<p_{\text {Fuj}}, \\ \exp\left(\varepsilon^{-(p-1)}\right), \,\, p=p_{\text {Fuj}},\end{array}\right.$$ where $p_{Fuj}=1+\frac{2m}{n}$ is the critical exponent of Fujita. These estimates refine and extend the earlier results of Caristi-Mitidieri [J. Math. Anal. Appl., 279:2 (2003), 710-722] and Sun [Electron. J. Differential Equations, 17 (2010)], who obtained only upper bounds under slowly decaying initial data assumptions. In our setting, the above condition on the initial data is replaced by the assumption $L^1\cap L^\infty$, which sharpens the results of the aforementioned works.

Forcing Effects on Finite-Time Blow-Up in Degenerate and Singular Parabolic Equations

We study the degenerate and singular parabolic equation with a forcing term \[ |x|^{σ_1}u_t = Δu + |x|^{σ_2}|u|^p + t^\varrho \mathbf{w}(x), \quad (t,x)\in(0,\infty)\times\mathbb{R}^N, \] where $N\ge 2$, $σ_1,σ_2>-2$, $\varrho>-1$, $p>1$, and $\mathbf{w}\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is continuous. We establish critical exponents that sharply separate the regimes of global existence and finite-time blow-up. For $\varrho>0$, we prove that there is no weak global solution for all $p>1$. When $-1<\varrho<0$, we show that if \[ p < p^*:=\frac{N+σ_2-\varrho(2+σ_1)}{N-2-\varrho(2+σ_1)}, \] then every weak solution blows up in finite time, provided $\int\limits_{\mathbb{R}^N}\mathbf{w}(x)\,dx>0$. In the case $\varrho=0$, blow-up occurs for $p\le (N+σ_2)/(N-2)_+$ with $N\ge 2$. In contrast, for $p>p^*$ and under smallness conditions on the initial data and forcing term, we prove the existence of a unique global mild solution. The analysis relies on scaling transformations, semigroup estimates for degenerate operators, and a fixed-point argument in weighted-in-time Lebesgue spaces.

Parabolic problems whose Fujita critical exponent is not given by scaling

This paper investigates the (fractional) heat equation with a nonlocal nonlinearity involving a Riesz potential: \begin{equation*} u_{t}+(-Δ)^{\fracβ{2}} u= I_α(|u|^{p}),\qquad x\in \mathbb{R}^n,\,\,\,t>0, \end{equation*} where $α\in(0,n)$, $β\in(0,2]$, $n\geq1$, $p>1.$ We introduce the Fujita-type critical exponent $p_{\mathrm{Fuj}}(n,β,α)=1+(β+α)/(n-α)$, which characterizes the global behavior of solutions: global existence for small initial data when $p>p_{\mathrm{Fuj}}(n,β,α),$ and finite-time blow-up when $p\leq p_{\mathrm{Fuj}}(n,β,α)$. It is remarkable that the critical Fujita exponent is not determined by the usual scaling argument that yields $p_{sc}=1+(β+α)/n$, but instead arises in an unconventional manner, similar to the results of Cazenave et al. [Nonlinear Analysis, 68 (2008), 862-874] for the heat equation with a nonlocal nonlinearity of the form $\int_0^t(t-s)^{-γ}|u(s)|^{p-1}u(s)ds,\,0\leq γ<1.$ The result on global existence for $p>p_{\mathrm{Fuj}}(n,2,α),$ provides a positive answer to the hypothesis proposed by Mitidieri and Pohozaev in [Proc. Steklov Inst. Math., 248 (2005) 164-185]. We further establish global nonexistence results for the above heat equation, where the Riesz potential term $I_α(|u|^{p})$ is replaced by a more general convolution operator $(\mathcal{K}\ast |u|^p),\,\mathcal{K}\in L^1_{loc}$, thereby extending the Mitidieri-Pohozaev's results established in the aforementioned work. Proofs of the blow-up results are obtained using a nonlinear capacity method specifically adapted to the structure of the problem, while global existence is established via a fixed-point argument combined with the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality.

Fujita-type results for the semilinear heat equations driven by mixed local-nonlocal operators

This paper explores the critical behavior of the semilinear heat equation $u_t+\mathcal{L}_{a, b}u=|u|^p+f(x)$, considering both the presence and absence of a forcing term $f(x).$ The mixed local-nonlocal operator $\mathcal{L}_{a, b}=-aΔ+b(-Δ)^s,\,a,\,b \in \mathbb{R}_+,$ incorporates both local and nonlocal Laplacians. We determine the Fujita-type critical exponents by considering the existence or nonexistence of global solutions. Interestingly, the critical exponent is determined by the nonlocal component of the operator and, as a result, coincides with that of the fractional Laplacian. In the case without a forcing term, our results improve upon recent findings by Biagi et al. [Bull. London Math. Soc. 57 (2025), 265-284] and Del Pezzo et al. [Nonlinear Analysis 255 (2025), 113761]. When a forcing term is included, our results refine those of Wang et al. [J. Math. Anal. Appl., 488 (1) (2020), 124067] and complement the work of Majdoub [La Matematica, 2 (2023), 340-361].

Blow-up criteria for the semilinear parabolic equations driven by mixed local-nonlocal operators

The main goal of this paper is to establish \emph{necessary and sufficient conditions} for the nonexistence of a global solution to the semilinear heat equation with a mixed local--nonlocal operator $ -Δ+ (-Δ)^σ$, under a general time-dependent nonlinearity. Our results complement the recent work of Carhuas-Torre et al. [ArXiv, (2025), arXiv:2505.20401], in which the authors provide sufficient conditions for the existence and nonexistence of global solutions. In particular, our results recover the critical Fujita exponent for time-independent power-type nonlinearities, as obtained by Biagi et al. [Bull. London Math. Soc. (2024), 1--20] and Del Pezzo et al. [Nonlinear Anal. 255 (2025), 113761].

Fujita-type results for parabolic equations with Hartree-type nonlinearities

This paper investigates the critical behavior of global solutions to a parabolic equation with a Hartree-type nonlinearity of the form $$\left\{\begin{array}{ll} u_{t}+(-Δ)^{\fracβ{2}} u= (\mathcal{K}\ast |u|^{p})|u|^{q},&\qquad x\in \mathbb{R}^n,\,\,\,t>0, u(x,0)=u_{0}(x),& \qquad x\in \mathbb{R}^n,\end{array} \right.$$ where $β\in(0,2]$, $n\geq1$, $p>1$, $q\geq 1$, $(-Δ)^{\fracβ{2}},\,β\in(0,2)$ denotes the fractional Laplacian, the symbol $\ast$ denotes the convolution operation in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and $\mathcal{K}:(0,\infty)\rightarrow(0,\infty)$ is a continuous function such that $\mathcal{K}(|\cdotp|)\in L^1_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and is monotonically decreasing in a neighborhood of infinity. We establish conditions for the global nonexistence of solutions to the problem under consideration, thereby partially improving some results of Filippucci and Ghergu in [Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. A, 42 (2022) 1817-1833] and [Nonlinear Anal., 221 (2022) 112881]. In addition, we establish local and global existence results in the case where the convolution term corresponds to the Riesz potential. Our methodology relies on the nonlinear capacity method and the fixed-point principle, combined with the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality.

On the critical behavior for the semilinear biharmonic heat equation with forcing term in an exterior domain

In this paper, we investigate the critical behavior of solutions to the semilinear biharmonic heat equation with forcing term $f(x),$ under six homogeneous boundary conditions. This paper is the first since the seminal work by Bandle, Levine, and Zhang [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 251 (2000) 624-648], to focus on the study of critical exponents in exterior problems for semilinear parabolic equations with a forcing term. By employing a method of test functions and comparison principle, we derive the critical exponents $p_{Crit}$ in the sense of Fujita. Moreover, we show that $p_{Crit}=\infty$ if $N=2,3,4$ and $p_{Crit}=\frac{N}{N-4}$ if $N \geq 5$. The impact of the forcing term on the critical behavior of the problem is also of interest, and thus a second critical exponent in the sense of Lee-Ni, depending on the forcing term is introduced. We also discuss the case $f\equiv 0$, and present the finite-time blow-up results and lifespan estimates of solutions for the subcritical and critical cases. The lifespan estimates of solutions are obtained by employing the method proposed by Ikeda and Sobajama in [Nonlinear Anal. 182 (2019) 57-74].

Berezin-Li-Yau inequality for mixed local-nonlocal Dirichlet-Laplacian

In this paper, we consider an eigenvalue problem for mixed local-nonlocal Laplacian $$\mathcal{L}^{a,b}_{\Om}:=-aΔ+b(-Δ)^s,\,a>0,\,b\in\mathbb{R},\,s\in (0,1),$$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. First, the case $a>0$ and $b>0$ is considered and the Berezin-Li-Yau inequality (lower bounds of the sum of eigenvalues) is established. This inequality is characterised as the maximum of the classical and fractional versions of the Berezin-Li-Yau inequality, and, in particular, yields both the classical and fractional forms of the Berezin-Li-Yau inequality. Next, we consider the case $a>0$ and $-\frac{a}{C_E}<b<0$, where $C_E\geq 1$ is the constant of the continuous embedding $H_{0}^{1}(\Om)\subset H_{0}^{s}(\Om)$. In this setting, we also derive the Berezin-Li-Yau inequality, which explicitly depends on the constant $C_E$.

Cazenave-Dickstein-Weissler-type extension of Fujita's problem on Heisenberg groups

This paper examines the critical exponents for the existence of global solutions to the equation \begin{equation*} \begin{array}{ll} \displaystyle u_t-Δ_{\mathbb{H}}u=\int_0^t(t-s)^{-γ}|u(s)|^{p-1}u(s)\,ds,&\qquad 0\leqγ<1,\,\,\, {η\in \mathbb{H}^n,\,\,\,t>0,} \end{array}\end{equation*} on the Heisenberg groups $\mathbb{H}^n.$ There exists a critical exponent $$p_c= \max\Big\{\frac{1}γ,p_γ\Big\}\in(0,+\infty],\quad\hbox{with}\quad p_γ=1+\frac{2(2-γ)}{Q-2+2γ},\,\,Q=2n+2$$ such that for all $1 p_c$, a global positive solution exists if the initial data is sufficiently small. The results obtained are a natural extension of the results of Cazenave et al. [Nonlinear Analysis 68 (2008), 862-874], where similar studies were carried out in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Also given are several theorems concerning the lifespan estimates of local solutions for different cases of initial data. The proofs of the main results are based on test function methods and Banach fixed point principle.

Blow-up results for the semilinear Schrödinger equations with forcing and gradient terms: the critical cases

The paper is devoted to the study of critical cases of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with source and gradient terms, subsequently providing answers to some open questions posed by Alotaibi et al in [Z. Angew. Math. Phys., 73 (2022), 1-17]. The main results state that in critical cases, the problem under consideration does not have any global-in-time weak solutions. The proof approach is based on modified method of test functions specifically adapted to the nature of considered problems.

Integro-differential diffusion equations on graded Lie groups

We first study the existence, uniqueness and well-posedness of a general class of integro-differential diffusion equation on $L^p(\mathbb{G})$ $(1<p<+\infty$, $\mathbb{G}$ is a graded Lie group). We show the explicit solution of the considered equation by using the Fourier analysis of the group. The equation involves a nonlocal in time operator (with a general kernel) and a positive Rockland operator acting on $\mathbb{G}.$ Also, we provide $L^p(\mathbb{G})-L^q(\mathbb{G})$ $(1<p\leqslant 2\leqslant q<+\infty)$ norm estimates and time decay rate for the solutions. In fact, by using some contemporary results, one can translate the latter regularity problem to the study of boundedness of its propagator which strongly depends on the traces of the spectral projections of the Rockland operator. Moreover, in many cases, we can obtain time asymptotic decay for the solutions which depends intrinsically on the considered kernel. As a complement, we give some norm estimates for the solutions in terms of a homogeneous Sobolev space in $L^{2}(\mathbb{G})$ that involves the Rockland operator. We also give a counterpart of our results in the setting of compact Lie groups. Illustrative examples are also given.

Higher order hypoelliptic damped wave equations on graded Lie groups with data from negative order Sobolev spaces: the critical case

Let $\mathbb G$ be a graded Lie group with homogeneous dimension $Q$. In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for a semilinear hypoelliptic damped wave equation involving a positive Rockland operator $\mathcal{R}$ of homogeneous degree $ν\geq 2$ on $\mathbb G$ with power type nonlinearity $|u|^p$ and initial data taken from negative order homogeneous Sobolev space $\dot H^{-γ}(\mathbb G), γ>0,$ for the critical exponent case $p=1+\frac{2ν}{Q+2γ}.$ We also explore the diffusion phenomenon of the higher-order hypoelliptic damped wave equations on graded Lie groups with initial data belonging to Sobolev spaces of negative order. We emphasize that our results are also new, even in the setting of higher-order differential operators on $\mathbb{R}^n$, and more generally, on stratified Lie groups.

Van der Corput lemmas for Mittag-Leffler functions. I

In this paper, we study analogues of the van der Corput lemmas involving Mittag-Leffler functions. The generalisation is that we replace the exponential function with the Mittag-Leffler-type function, to study oscillatory type integrals appearing in the analysis of time-fractional partial differential equations. Several generalisations of the first and second van der Corput lemmas are proved. Optimal estimates on decay orders for particular cases of the Mittag-Leffler functions are also obtained. As an application of the above results, the generalised Riemann-Lebesgue lemma and the Cauchy problem for the time-fractional Schrödinger equation are considered.

Higher-order evolution inequalities with Hardy potential on the Korányi ball

We consider a higher order in (time) semilinear evolution inequality posed on the Korányi ball under an inhomogeneous Dirichlet-type boundary condition. The problem involves an inverse-square potential $λ/|ξ|_\mathbb{H}^2$, where $λ\geq -(Q-2)^2/4$ and a general weight function $V$ depending on the space variable in front of the power nonlinearity. We first establish a general nonexistence result for the considered problem. Next, in the special case $V(ξ):=|ξ|_\mathbb{H}^a$, $a\in \mathbb{R}$, we prove the sharpness of our nonexistence result and show that the problem admits three different critical behaviors according to the value of the parameter $λ$.

Behavior of solutions to semilinear evolution inequalities in an annulus: the critical cases

In the present paper, we consider the parabolic and hyperbolic inequalities with a singular potentials and with a critical nonlinearities in the annulus domain. The problems are studied with Neumann-type and Dirichlet-type boundary conditions on the boundary. Moreover, we study the systems of problems too. We have proved that the above problems are globally unsolvable in critical cases, thereby filling the gaps the recent results by Jleli and Samet in [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 514: 2 (2022)] and in [Anal. Math. Phys. 12: 90 (2022)]. Proofs are carried out using the method of test functions with logarithmic arguments, which is being developed for the first time in bounded domains.

Semilinear wave inequalities with double damping and potential terms on Riemannian Manifolds

We study a semilinear wave inequality with double damping on a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. The considered problem involves a potential function $V$ depending on the space variable in front of the power nonlinearity and an inhomogeneous term $W$ depending on both time and space variables. Namely, we establish sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of weak solutions in both cases: $W\equiv 0$ and $W\not\equiv 0$. The obtained conditions depend on the parameters of the problem as well as the geometry of the manifold. Some special cases of manifolds, and of $V$ and $W$ are discussed in detail.
