Continuous and Discrete Homotopy Operators with Applications in Integrability Testing

We introduce calculus-based formulas for the continuous Euler and homotopy operators. The 1D continuous homotopy operator automates integration by parts on the jet space. Its 3D generalization allows one to invert the total divergence operator. As a practical application, we show how the operators can be used to symbolically compute local conservation laws of nonlinear systems of partial differential equations in multi-dimensions. By analogy to the continuous case, we also present concrete formulas for the discrete Euler and homotopy operators. Essentially, the discrete homotopy operator carries out summation by parts. We use it to algorithmically invert the forward difference operator. We apply the discrete operator to compute fluxes of differential-difference equations in (1+1) dimensions. Our calculus-based approach allows for a straightforward implementation of the operators in major computer algebra system, such as Mathematica and Maple. The symbolic algorithms for integration and summation by parts are illustrated with elementary examples. The algorithms to compute conservation laws are illustrated with nonlinear PDEs and their discretizations arising in fluid dynamics and mathematical physics.

Exact nonstationary solutions to the mean-field equations of motion for two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials

We study the dynamics of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in periodic potentials in one dimension. Elliptic potentials which have the sinusoidal optical potential as a special case are considered. We construct exact nonstationary solutions to the mean-field equations of motion. Among the solutions are two types of temporally-periodic solutions -- in one type there are condensate oscillations between neighboring potential wells, while in the other the condensates oscillate from side to side within the wells. Our numerical studies of the stability of these solutions suggests the existence of one-parameter families of stable nonstationary solutions.

Singular instability of exact stationary solutions of the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equation

In this paper we show numerically that for nonlinear Schrodinger type systems the presence of nonlocal perturbations can lead to a beyond-all-orders instability of stable solutions of the local equation. For the specific case of the nonlocal one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with an external standing light wave potential, we construct exact stationary solutions for an arbitrary interaction kernel. As the nonlocal and local equations approach each other (by letting an appropriate small parameter $ε\to 0$), we compare the dynamics of the respective solutions. By considering the time of onset of instability, the singular nature of the inclusion of nonlocality is demonstrated, independent of the form of the interaction kernel.

Computing Riemann Theta Functions

The Riemann theta function is a complex-valued function of g complex variables. It appears in the construction of many (quasi-) periodic solutions of various equations of mathematical physics. In this paper, algorithms for its computation are given. First, a formula is derived allowing the pointwise approximation of Riemann theta functions, with arbitrary, user-specified precision. This formula is used to construct a uniform approximation formula, again with arbitrary precision.

Dynamics and Stability of Bose-Einstein Condensates: the Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation with Periodic Potential

The cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a lattice potential is used to model a periodic dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensate. Both two- and three-dimensional condensates are considered, for atomic species with either repulsive or attractive interactions. A family of exact solutions and corresponding potential is presented in terms of elliptic functions. The dynamical stability of these exact solutions is examined using both analytical and numerical methods. For condensates with repulsive atomic interactions, all stable, trivial-phase solutions are off-set from the zero level. For condensates with attractive atomic interactions, no stable solutions are found, in contrast to the one-dimensional case.

Stability of exact solutions of the defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation with periodic potential in two dimensions

The cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation with repulsive nonlinearity and elliptic function potential in two-dimensions models a repulsive dilute gas Bose--Einstein condensate in a lattice potential. A family of exact stationary solutions is presented and its stability is examined using analytical and numerical methods. All stable trivial-phase solutions are off-set from the zero level. Our results imply that a large number of condensed atoms is sufficient to form a stable, periodic condensate.

Bose-Einstein condensates in standing waves: The cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a periodic potential

We present a new family of stationary solutions to the cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a Jacobian elliptic function potential. In the limit of a sinusoidal potential our solutions model a dilute gas Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a standing light wave. Provided the ratio of the height of the variations of the condensate to its DC offset is small enough, both trivial phase and nontrivial phase solutions are shown to be stable. Numerical simulations suggest such stationary states are experimentally observable.

Pole Dynamics for Elliptic Solutions of the Korteweg-deVries Equation

The real, nonsingular elliptic solutions of the Korteweg-deVries equation are studied through the time dynamics of their poles in the complex plane. The dynamics of these poles is governed by a dynamical system with a constraint. This constraint is shown to be solvable for any finite number of poles located in the fundamental domain of the elliptic function, often in many different ways. Special consideration is given to those elliptic solutions that have a real nonsingular soliton limit.

Canonical variables for multiphase solutions of the KP equation

The KP equation has a large family of quasiperiodic multiphase solutions. These solutions can be expressed in terms of Riemann-theta functions. In this paper, a finite-dimensional canonical Hamiltonian system depending on a finite number of parameters is given for the description of each such solution. The Hamiltonian systems are completely integrable in the sense of Liouville. In effect, this provides a solution of the initial-value problem for the theta-function solutions. Some consequences of this approach are discussed.
