Spectral properties of higher order anharmonic oscillators

We discuss spectral properties of the self-adjoint operator \[ -d^2/dt^2 + (t^{k+1}/(k+1)-α)^2 \] in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ for odd integers $k$. We prove that the minimum over $α$ of the ground state energy of this operator is attained at a unique point which tends to zero as $k$ tends to infinity. Moreover, we show that the minimum is non-degenerate. These questions arise naturally in the spectral analysis of Schrödinger operators with magnetic field. This extends or clarifies previous results by Pan-Kwek, Helffer-Morame, Aramaki, Helffer-Kordyukov and Helffer.

Semiclassical analysis of Schrödinger operators with magnetic wells

We give a survey of some results, mainly obtained by the authors and their collaborators, on spectral properties of the magnetic Schrödinger operators in the semiclassical limit. We focus our discussion on asymptotic behavior of the individual eigenvalues for operators on closed manifolds and existence of gaps in intervals close to the bottom of the spectrum of periodic operators.

On mathematical models for Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices (expanded version)

Our aim is to analyze the various energy functionals appearing in the physics literature and describing the behavior of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. We want to justify the use of some reduced models. For that purpose, we will use the semi-classical analysis developed for linear problems related to the Schrödinger operator with periodic potential or multiple wells potentials. We justify, in some asymptotic regimes, the reduction to low dimensional problems and analyze the reduced problems.

Spectral gaps for periodic Schrödinger operators with hypersurface magnetic wells

We consider a periodic magnetic Schrödinger operator on a noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$ such that $H^1(M, \RR)=0$ endowed with a properly discontinuous cocompact isometric action of a discrete group. We assume that there is no electric field and that the magnetic field has a periodic set of compact magnetic wells. We review a general scheme of a proof of existence of an arbitrary large number of gaps in the spectrum of such an operator in the semiclassical limit, which was suggested in our previous paper, and some applications of this scheme. Then we apply these methods to establish similar results in the case when the wells have regular hypersurface pieces.

The periodic magnetic Schrödinger operators: spectral gaps and tunneling effect

A periodic Schrödinger operator on a noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$ such that $H^1(M, \mathbb R)=0$ endowed with a properly discontinuous cocompact isometric action of a discrete group is considered. Under some additional conditions on the magnetic field existence of an arbitrary large number of gaps in the spectrum of such an operator in the semiclassical limit is established. The proofs are based on the study of the tunneling effect in the corresponding quantum system.

Subelliptic estimates for some systems of complex vector fields : quasihomogeneous case

For about twenty five years it was a kind of folk theorem that complex vector-fields defined on $Ω\times \mathbb R_t$ (with $Ω$ open set in $\mathbb R^n$) by $$ L_j = \frac{\partial}{\partial t_j} + i \frac {\partial ϕ}{\partial t_j}(\t) \frac{\partial}{\partial x}, j=1,..., n, \t\in Ω, x\in \mathbb R ,$$ with $ϕ$ analytic, were subelliptic as soon as they were hypoelliptic. This was the case when $n=1$ but in the case $n>1$, an inaccurate reading of the proof given by Maire (see also Trèves) of the hypoellipticity of such systems, under the condition that $ϕ$ does not admit any local maximum or minimum (through a non standard subelliptic estimate), was supporting the belief for this folk theorem. Quite recently, J.L. Journé and J.M.Trépreau show by examples that there are very simple systems (with polynomial $ϕ$'s) which were hypoelliptic but not subelliptic in the standard $L^2$-sense. So it is natural to analyze this problem of subellipticity which is in some sense intermediate (at least when $ϕ$ is $C^\infty$) between the maximal hypoellipticity (which was analyzed by Helffer-Nourrigat and Nourrigat) and the simple local hypoellipticity (or local microhypoellipticity) and to start first with the easiest non trivial examples. The analysis presented here is a continuation of a previous work by the first author and is devoted to the case of quasihomogeneous functions.

Semiclassical asymptotics and gaps in the spectra of periodic Schrödinger operators with magnetic wells

We show that, under some very weak assumption of effective variation for the magnetic field, a periodic Schrödinger operator with magnetic wells on a noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$ such that $H^1(M, \R)=0$ equipped with a properly disconnected, cocompact action of a finitely generated, discrete group of isometries has an arbitrarily large number of spectral gaps in the semi-classical limit.

Compactness of the solution operator to d-bar in weighted L^2 - spaces

In this paper we discuss compactness of the canonical solution operator to d-bar on weigthed L^2- spaces on C^n. For this purpose we apply ideas which were used for the Witten Laplacian in the real case and various methods of spectral theory of these operators. We also point out connections to the theory of Dirac and Pauli operators.

Non-Linear Eigenvalues and Analytic Hypoellipticity

Motivated by the problems of analytic hypoellipticity, we show that a special family of compact non self-adjoint operators has a non-zero eigenvalue. We recover old results by Christ,Hanges, Himonas, Pham-The-Lai and Robert proved by using ordinary differential equations. We show our method applies to higher dimensional cases, giving in particular a new class of hypoelliptic but not analytic hypoelliptic operators.

On bifurcations from normal solutions for superconducting states

Motivated by the paper by J. Berger and K. Rubinstein \cite{BeRu} and other recent studies \cite{GiPh}, \cite{LuPa1}, \cite{LuPa2}, we analyze the Ginzburg-Landau functional in an open bounded set $Ω$. We mainly discuss the bifurcation problem whose analysis was initiated in \cite{Od} and show how some of the techniques developed by the first author in the case of Abrikosov's superconductors \cite{Du} can be applied in this context. In the case of non simply connected domains, we come back to \cite{BeRu} and \cite{HHOO}, \cite{HHOO1} for giving the analysis of the structure of the nodal sets for the bifurcating solutions.
