On self-dual Yang-Mills fields on special complex surfaces

We derive a generalization of the flat space Yang's and Newman's equations for self-dual Yang-Mills fields to (locally) conformally Kahler Riemannian 4-manifolds. The results also apply to Einstein metrics (whose full curvature is not necessarily self-dual). We analyse the possibility of hidden symmetries in the form of Backlund transformations, and we find a continuous group of hidden symmetries only for the case in which the geometry is conformally half-flat. No isometries are assumed.

Conformal geometry and half-integrable spacetimes

Using a combination of techniques from conformal and complex geometry, we show the potentialization of 4-dimensional closed Einstein-Weyl structures which are half-algebraically special and admit a "half-integrable" almost-complex structure. That is, we reduce the Einstein-Weyl equations to a single, conformally invariant, non-linear scalar equation, that we call the "conformal HH equation", and we reconstruct the conformal structure (curvature and metric) from a solution to this equation. We show that the conformal metric is composed of: a conformally flat part, a conformally half-flat part related to certain "constants" of integration, and a potential part that encodes the full non-linear curvature, and that coincides in form with the Hertz potential from perturbation theory. We also study the potentialization of the Dirac-Weyl, Maxwell (with and without sources), and Yang-Mills systems. We show how to deal with the ordinary Einstein equations by using a simple trick. Our results give a conformally invariant, coordinate-free, generalization of the hyper-heavenly construction of Plebanski and collaborators.

Double field theory, twistors, and integrability in 4-manifolds

The search for a geometrical understanding of dualities in string theory, in particular T-duality, has led to the development of modern T-duality covariant frameworks such as Double Field Theory, whose mathematical structure can be understood in terms of generalized geometry and, more recently, para-Hermitian geometry. In this work we apply techniques associated to this doubled geometry to four-dimensional manifolds, and we show that they are particularly well-suited to the analysis of integrability in special spacetimes, especially in connection with Penrose's twistor theory and its applications to general relativity. This shows a close relationship between some of the geometrical structures in the para-Hermitian approach to double field theory and those in algebraically special solutions to the Einstein equations. Particular results include the classification of four-dimensional, possibly complex-valued, (para-)Hermitian structures in different signatures, the Lie and Courant algebroid structures of special spacetimes, and the analysis of deformations of (para-)complex structures. We also discuss a notion of "weighted algebroids" in relation to a natural gauge freedom in the framework. Finally, we analyse the connection with two- and three-dimensional (real and complex) twistor spaces, and how the former can be understood in terms of the latter, in particular in terms of twistor families.

On the geometry of Petrov type II spacetimes

In general, geometries of Petrov type II do not admit symmetries in terms of Killing vectors or spinors. We introduce a weaker form of Killing equations which do admit solutions. In particular, there is an analog of the Penrose-Walker Killing spinor. Some of its properties, including associated conservation laws, are discussed. Perturbations of Petrov type II Einstein geometries in terms of a complex scalar Debye potential yield complex solutions to the linearized Einstein equations. The complex linearized Weyl tensor is shown to be half Petrov type N. The remaining curvature component on the algebraically special side is reduced to a first order differential operator acting on the potential.

Two-dimensional twistor manifolds and Teukolsky operators

The Teukolsky equations are currently the leading approach for analysing stability of linear massless fields propagating in rotating black holes. It has recently been shown that the geometry of these equations can be understood in terms of a connection constructed from the conformal and complex structure of Petrov type D spaces. Since the study of linear massless fields by a combination of conformal, complex and spinor methods is a distinctive feature of twistor theory, and since versions of the twistor equation have recently been shown to appear in the Teukolsky equations, this raises the question of whether there are deeper twistor structures underlying this geometry. In this work we show that all these geometric structures can be understood naturally by considering a {\em 2-dimensional} twistor manifold, whereas in twistor theory the standard (projective) twistor space is 3-dimensional.

Conformal invariance, complex structures, and the Teukolsky connection

We show that the Teukolsky connection, which defines generalized wave operators governing the behavior of massless fields on Einstein spacetimes of Petrov type D, has its origin in a distinguished conformally and GHP covariant connection on the conformal structure of the spacetime. The conformal class has a (metric compatible) integrable almost-complex structure under which the Einstein space becomes a complex (Hermitian) manifold. There is a unique compatible Weyl connection for the conformal structure, and it leads to the construction of a conformally covariant GHP formalism and a generalization of it to weighted spinor/tensor fiber bundles. In particular, `weighted Killing spinors', previously defined with respect to the Teukolsky connection, are shown to have their origin in the GHP-Weyl connection, and we show that the type D principal spinors are actually parallel with respect to it. Furthermore, we show that the existence of a conformal Killing-Yano tensor can be thought to be a consequence of the presence of a Kahler metric in the conformal class. These results provide an interpretation of the persistent hidden symmetries appearing in black hole perturbations. We also show that the preferred Weyl connection allows a natural injection of spinor fields into local twistor space and that this leads to the notion of weighted local twistors. Finally, we find conformally covariant operator identities for massless fields and the corresponding wave equations.

Generalized wave operators, weighted Killing fields, and perturbations of higher dimensional spacetimes

We present weighted covariant derivatives and wave operators for perturbations of certain algebraically special Einstein spacetimes in arbitrary dimensions, under which the Teukolsky and related equations become weighted wave equations. We show that the higher dimensional generalization of the principal null directions are weighted conformal Killing vectors with respect to the modified covariant derivative. We also introduce a modified Laplace-de Rham-like operator acting on tensor-valued differential forms, and show that the wave-like equations are, at the linear level, appropriate projections {\em off shell} of this operator acting on the curvature tensor; the projection tensors being made out of weighted conformal Killing-Yano tensors. We give off shell operator identities that map the Einstein and Maxwell equations into weighted scalar equations, and using adjoint operators we construct solutions of the original field equations in a compact form from solutions of the wave-like equations. We study the extreme and zero boost weight cases; extreme boost corresponding to perturbations of Kundt spacetimes (which includes Near Horizon Geometries of extreme black holes), and zero boost to static black holes in arbitrary dimensions. In 4 dimensions our results apply to Einstein spacetimes of Petrov type D and make use of weighted Killing spinors.

Instability of asymptotically anti de Sitter black holes under Robin conditions at the timelike boundary

The static region outside the event horizon of an asymptotically anti de Sitter black hole has a conformal timelike boundary $\mathscr{I}$ on which boundary conditions have to be imposed for the evolution of linear fields from initial data to be a well posed problem. Only homogeneous Dirichlet, Neumann or Robin conditions preserve the action of the background isometry group on the solution space. We study the case in which the modal decomposition of the linear field leads to potentials not diverging at the conformal timelike boundary. We prove that there is always an instability if Robin boundary conditions with large enough $γ$ (the quotient between the values of the derivative of the field and the field at the boundary) are allowed. We explain the origin of this instability, show that for modes with nonnegative potentials there is a single unstable state and prove a number of properties of this state. Although our results apply in general to 1+1 wave equations on a half infinite domain with a potential that is not singular at the boundary, our motivation is to analyze the gravitational stability of the four dimensional Schwarzschild anti de Sitter black holes (SAdS${}_4$) in the context of the black hole non modal linear stability program initiated in Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 112}, 191101 (2014), and the related supersymmetric type of duality exchanging odd and even modes. We prove that this symmetry is broken except when a combination of Dirichlet conditions in the even sector and a particular Robin condition in the odd sector is enforced, or viceversa, and that only the first of these two choices leads to a stable dynamics.

Symmetry operators and decoupled equations for linear fields on black hole spacetimes

In the class of vacuum Petrov type D spacetimes with cosmological constant, which includes the Kerr-(A)dS black hole as a particular case, we find a set of four-dimensional operators that, when composed {\em off shell} with the Dirac, Maxwell and linearized gravity equations, give a system of equations for spin weighted scalars associated to the linear fields, that decouple on shell. Using these operator relations we give compact reconstruction formulae for solutions of the original spinor and tensor field equations in terms of solutions of the decoupled scalar equations. We also analyze the role of Killing spinors and Killing-Yano tensors in the spin weight zero equations and, in the case of spherical symmetry, we compare our four-dimensional formulation with the standard $2+2$ decomposition and particularize to the Schwarzschild-(A)dS black hole. Our results uncover a pattern that generalizes a number of previous results on Teukolsky-like equations and Debye potentials for higher spin fields.

Petrov type of linearly perturbed type D spacetimes

We show that a spacetime satisfying the linearized vacuum Einstein equations around a type D background is generically of type I, and that the splittings of the Principal Null Directions (PNDs) and of the degenerate eigenvalue of the Weyl tensor are non analytic functions of the perturbation parameter of the metric. This provides a gauge invariant characterization of the effect of the perturbation on the underlying geometry, without appealing to differential curvature invariants. This is of particular interest for the Schwarzschild solution, for which there are no signatures of the even perturbations on the algebraic curvature invariants. We also show that, unlike the general case, the unstable even modes of the Schwarzschild naked singularity deforms the Weyl tensor into a type II one.
