Central diagonal sections of the $n$-cube

We prove that the volume of central hyperplane sections of a unit cube in $\mathbb{R}^n$ orthogonal to a diameter of the cube is a strictly monotonically increasing function of the dimension for $n\geq 3$. Our argument uses an integral formula that goes back to Pólya \cite{P} (see also \cite{H} and \cite{B86}) for the volume of central sections of the cube, and Laplace's method to estimate the asymptotic behaviour of the integral. First we show that monotonicity holds starting from some specific $n_0$. Then, using interval arithmetic (IA) and automatic differentiation (AD), we compute an explicit bound for $n_0$, and check the remaining cases between $3$ and $n_0$ by direct computation.

On the reverse isodiametric problem and Dvoretzky-Rogers-type volume bounds

The isodiametric inequality states that the Euclidean ball maximizes the volume among all convex bodies of a given diameter. We are motivated by a conjecture of Makai Jr.~on the reverse question: Every convex body has a linear image whose isodiametric quotient is at least as large as that of a regular simplex. We relate this reverse isodiametric problem to minimal volume enclosing ellipsoids and to the Dvoretzky-Rogers-type problem of finding large volume simplices in any decomposition of the identity matrix. As a result, we solve the reverse isodiametric problem for $o$-symmetric convex bodies and obtain a strong asymptotic bound in the general case. Using the Cauchy-Binet formula for minors of a product of matrices, we obtain Dvoretzky-Rogers-type volume bounds which are of independent interest.

On a generalization of the Hermite-Hadamard inequality and applications in convex geometry

In this paper we show the following result: if C is an n-dimensional 0-symmetric convex compact set, $f:C\rightarrow[0,1)$ is concave, and $g:[0,1)\rightarrow[0,1)$ is not identically zero, convex, with g(0)=0, then \[ \frac{1}{|C|}\int_C g(f(x))dx \leq \frac12 \int_{-1}^1g(f(0)(1+t))dt, \] where |C| denotes the volume of C. If g? is strictly convex, equality holds if and only if f is affine, C is a generalized symmetric cylinder and f becomes 0 at one of the basis of C. We exploit this inequality to answer a question of Francisco Santos on estimating the volume of a convex set by means of the volume of a central section of it. Second, we also derive a corresponding estimate for log-concave functions.

On the isodiametric and isominwidth inequalities for planar bisections

For a given planar convex compact set $K$, consider a bisection $\{A,B\}$ of $K$ (i.e., $A\cup B=K$ and whose common boundary $A\cap B$ is an injective continuous curve connecting two boundary points of $K$) minimizing the corresponding maximum diameter (or maximum width) of the regions among all such bisections of $K$. In this note we study some properties of these minimizing bisections and we provide analogous to the isodiametric (Bieberbach, 1915), the isominwidth (Pál, 1921), the reverse isodiametric (Behrend, 1937), and the reverse isominwidth (González Merino \& Schymura, 2018) inequalities.

An extension of Berwald's inequality and its relation to Zhang's inequality

In this note prove the following Berwald-type inequality, showing that for any integrable log-concave function $f:\mathbb R^n\rightarrow[0,\infty)$ and any concave function $h:L\rightarrow\mathbb [0,\infty)$, where $L$ is the epigraph of $-\log \frac{f}{\Vert f\Vert_\infty}$, then $$p\to \left(\frac{1}{Γ(1+p)\int_L e^{-t}dtdx}\int_L h^p(x,t)e^{-t}dtdx\right)^\frac{1}{p} $$ is decreasing in $p\in(-1,\infty)$, extending the range of $p$ where the monotonicity is known to hold true. As an application of this extension, we will provide a new proof of a functional form of Zhang's reverse Petty projection inequality, recently obtained in [ABG].

On inscribed equilateral simplices in normed spaces

In this paper we prove in certain n-dimensional normed spaces X the existence of full-dimensional equilateral simplices of large size inscribed to the unit ball B. This extends the construction of Makeev [Mak] in dimension 4 and we also compute an example of a space in which the idea cannot be applied.

Zhang's inequality for log-concave functions

Zhang's reverse affine isoperimetric inequality states that among all convex bodies $K\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$, the affine invariant quantity $|K|^{n-1}|Π^*(K)|$ (where $Π^*(K)$ denotes the polar projection body of $K$) is minimized if and only if $K$ is a simplex. In this paper we prove an extension of Zhang's inequality in the setting of integrable log-concave functions, characterizing also the equality cases.

Uniqueness of circumcenters in generalized Minkowski spaces

In an $n$-dimensional normed space every bounded set has a unique circumball if and only if every set of cardinality two has a unique circumball and if and only if the unit ball of the space is strictly convex. When the symmetry of the norm is dropped, i.e., when the centrally symmetric unit ball is replaced by an arbitrary convex body, then the above three conditions are no longer equivalent. We show for the latter case that every bounded set has a unique circumball if and only if every set of cardinality at most $n$ has a unique circumball. We also give an equivalent condition in terms of the geometry of the unit ball. In similar terms we answer the following more general question for every $k \in \{0,\ldots,n-2\}$: When are the dimensions of the sets of all circumcenters of arbitrary bounded sets not larger than $k$?

Rogers-Shephard and local Loomis-Whitney type inequalities

We provide functional analogues of the classical geometric inequality of Rogers and Shephard on products of volumes of sections and projections. As a consequence we recover (and obtain some new) functional versions of Rogers-Shephard type inequalities as well as some generalizations of the geometric Rogers-Shephard inequality in the case where the subspaces intersect. These generalizations can be regarded as sharp local reverse Loomis-Whitney inequalities. We also obtain a sharp local Loomis-Whitney inequality.

Hunting for reduced polytopes

By correcting an example by Polyanskii, we show that there exist reduced polytopes in three-dimensional Euclidean space. This partially answers the question posed by Lassak on the existence of reduced polytopes in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space for $d\geq 3$.

Hunting for reduced polytopes

We show that there exist reduced polytopes in three-dimensional Euclidean space. This partially answers the question posed by Lassak on the existence of reduced polytopes in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space for $d\geq 3$. Moreover, we prove a novel necessary condition on reduced polytopes in three-dimensional Euclidean space.

Minkowski concentricity and complete simplices

This paper considers the radii functionals (circumradius, inradius, and diameter) as well as the Minkowski asymmetry for general (possibly non-symmetric) gauge bodies. A generalization of the concentricity inequality (which states that the sum of the inradius and circumradius is not greater than the diameter in general Minkowski spaces) for non-symmetric gauge bodies is derived and a strong connection between this new inequality, extremal sets of the generalized Bohnenblust inequality, and completeness of simplices is revealed.

Rogers-Shephard inequality for log-concave functions

In this paper we prove different functional inequalities extending the classical Rogers-Shephard inequalities for convex bodies. The original inequalities provide an optimal relation between the volume of a convex body and the volume of several symmetrizations of the body, such as, its difference body. We characterize the equality cases in all these inequalities. Our method is based on the extension of the notion of a convolution body of two convex sets to any pair of log-concave functions and the study of some geometrical properties of these new sets.

Improving bounds for the Perel'man-Pukhov quotient for inner and outer radii

In this work we study upper bounds for the ratio of successive inner and outer radii of a convex body K. This problem was studied by Perel'man and Pukhov and it is a natural generalization of the classical results of Jung and Steinhagen. We also introduce a technique which relates sections and projections of a convex body in an optimal way.

On densities of lattice arrangements intersecting every i-dimensional affine subspace

In 1978, Makai Jr. established a remarkable connection between the volume-product of a convex body, its maximal lattice packing density and the minimal density of a lattice arrangement of its polar body intersecting every affine hyperplane. Consequently, he formulated a conjecture that can be seen as a dual analog of Minkowski's fundamental theorem, and which is strongly linked to the well-known Mahler-conjecture. Based on the covering minima of Kannan & Lovász and a problem posed by Fejes Tóth, we arrange Makai Jr.'s conjecture into a wider context and investigate densities of lattice arrangements of convex bodies intersecting every i-dimensional affine subspace. Then it becomes natural also to formulate and study a dual analog to Minkowski's second fundamental theorem. As our main results, we derive meaningful asymptotic lower bounds for the densities of such arrangements, and furthermore, we solve the problems exactly for the special, yet important, class of unconditional convex bodies.

Is a complete, reduced set necessarily of constant width?

Is it true that a convex body $K$ being complete and reduced with respect to some gauge body $C$ is necessarily of constant width, that is, satisfies $K-K=ρ(C-C)$ for some $ρ>0$? We prove this implication for several cases including the following: if $K$ is a simplex and or if $K$ possesses a smooth extreme point, then the implication holds. Moreover, we derive several new results on perfect norms.

Tight bounds on discrete quantitative Helly numbers

Given a subset S of R^n, let c(S,k) be the smallest number t such that whenever finitely many convex sets have exactly k common points in S, there exist at most t of these sets that already have exactly k common points in S. For S = Z^n, this number was introduced by Aliev et al. [2014] who gave an explicit bound showing that c(Z^n,k) = O(k) holds for every fixed n. Recently, Chestnut et al. [2015] improved this to c(Z^n,k) = O(k (log log k)(log k)^{-1/3} ) and provided the lower bound c(Z^n,k) = Omega(k^{(n-1)/(n+1)}). We provide a combinatorial description of c(S,k) in terms of polytopes with vertices in S and use it to improve the previously known bounds as follows: We strengthen the bound of Aliev et al. [2014] by a constant factor and extend it to general discrete sets S. We close the gap for Z^n by showing that c(Z^n,k) = Theta(k^{(n-1)/(n+1)}) holds for every fixed n. Finally, we determine the exact values of c(Z^n,k) for all k <= 4.
