Hydrodynamic tails in chaotic spin chains with quantum group symmetry

The interplay between symmetry and thermalization governs the late-time dynamics of local quantum and classical many-body systems at nonzero temperature. Recently, two parallel frontiers have emerged: the search for robust anomalous hydrodynamics -- such as superdiffusion -- in generic, non-integrable models, and the formal effort to generalize the fundamental concept of global symmetry. In this paper, we bridge these frontiers by demonstrating that quantum group symmetry provides a novel mechanism for anomalous hydrodynamics in chaotic systems. We study the dynamics of local operators carrying $U(1)$ charge in non-integrable lattice models that also have quantum group symmetry. One example is transverse spin in the XXZ model with integrability breaking deformations. While such excitations are expected to decay very quickly at high temperature because their charge forbids overlap with conventional hydrodynamic densities, we find that protection by the quantum group symmetry makes these modes long-lived, despite the absence of local quantum group charge density or current. Furthermore, the dynamics is superdiffusive across Hamiltonian, Floquet, and classical realizations, and exhibits unusual finite size effects at very late times. We also revisit transverse spin dynamics in the integrable XXZ model.

On the Wilson-Fisher fixed point in the limit of integer spacetime dimensions

The Wilson-Fisher fixed point defines a continuous family of interacting conformal field theories in non-integer dimensions. In integer dimensions, it is widely believed to lie in the same universality class as the critical Ising model. In this work, we revisit the identification between the Wilson-Fisher fixed point at integer dimensions and the Ising CFT. We argue that a literal equality between the two theories is incompatible with the emergence of Virasoro symmetry in two dimensions. Instead, we propose that the Ising model emerges only as a subsector of the Wilson-Fisher fixed point. We support this scenario through a detailed study of the two-dimensional $O(n)$ model and by examining operators transforming in irreducible representations of the orthogonal group whose multiplicities become negative for integer values of the spacetime dimension. Finally, we comment on the implications of these results for attempts to construct a $d=2+\epsilon$ expansion starting from exact two-dimensional data.

Analytic results in conformal field theory

Since the 1980s, many exact results have been discovered in $2d$ CFT, from critical exponents to correlation functions to complete solutions of certain models. In $d>2$, there is a wealth of numerical results as well as promising analytic approaches, but comparably fewer exact answers. The aim of this conference was to review the most promising analytic methods and results in CFT in any dimension. In particular we tried to understand to which extent the $2d$ methods can be extended to $d>2$, and what is missing to exactly solve $d>2$ CFTs.

Phases of 2d Gauge Theories and Symmetric Mass Generation

We study the dynamics and phase structure of Abelian gauge theories in $d=1+1$ dimensions. These include $U(1)$ gauge theory coupled to a scalar and a fermion, as well as the two-flavour Schwinger model with different charges. Both theories exhibit a surprisingly rich phase diagram as masses are varied, with both $c=1$ and $c=1/2$ critical lines or points. We build up to the study of 2d chiral gauge theories, which hold particular interest because they provide a mechanism for symmetric mass generation, a phenomenon in which fermions become gapped without breaking chiral symmetries.

Quantum Groups as Global Symmetries II. Coulomb Gas Construction

We study a conformal field theory that arises in the infinite-volume limit of a spin chain with $U_q(sl_2)$ global symmetry. Most operators in the theory are defect-ending operators which allows $U_q(sl_2)$ symmetry transformations to act on them in a consistent way. We use Coulomb gas techniques to construct correlation functions and compute all OPE coefficients of the model, as well as to prove that the properties imposed by the quantum group symmetry are indeed satisfied by the correlation functions. In particular, we treat the non-chiral operators present in the theory. Free boson realization elucidates the origin of the defects attached to the operators. We also comment on the role of quantum group in generalized minimal models.

Quantum Groups as Global Symmetries

We study quantum field theories which have quantum groups as global internal symmetries. We show that in such theories operators are generically non-local, and should be thought as living at the ends of topological lines. We describe the general constraints of the quantum group symmetry, given by Ward identities, that correlation functions of the theory should satisfy. We also show that generators of the symmetry can be represented by topological lines with some novel properties. We then discuss a particular example of $U_q(sl_2)$ symmetric CFT, which we solve using the bootstrap techniques and relying on the symmetry. We finally show strong evidence that for a special value of $q$ a subsector of this theory reproduces the fermionic formulation of the Ising model. This suggests that a quantum group can act on local operators as well, however, it generically transforms them into non-local ones.

Phase Diagram of the Two-Flavor Schwinger Model at Zero Temperature

We examine the phase structure of the two-flavor Schwinger model as a function of the $θ$-angle and the two masses, $m_1$ and $m_2$. In particular, we find interesting effects at $θ=π$: along the $SU(2)$-invariant line $m_1 = m_2 = m$, in the regime where $m$ is much smaller than the charge $g$, the theory undergoes logarithmic RG flow of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type. As a result, in this regime there is a non-perturbatively small mass gap $\sim e^{- A g^2/m^2}$. The $SU(2)$-invariant line lies within a region of the phase diagram where the charge conjugation symmetry is spontaneously broken and whose boundaries we determine numerically. Our numerical results are obtained using the Hamiltonian lattice gauge formulation that includes the mass shift $m_\text{lat} = m- g^2 a/4$ dictated by the discrete chiral symmetry.

Discrete Chiral Symmetry and Mass Shift in Lattice Hamiltonian Approach to Schwinger Model

We revisit the lattice formulation of the Schwinger model using the Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian approach with staggered fermions. This model, introduced by Banks et al., contains the mass term $m_{\rm lat} \sum_{n} (-1)^{n} χ^\dagger_n χ_n$, and setting it to zero is often assumed to provide the lattice regularization of the massless Schwinger model. We instead argue that the relation between the lattice and continuum mass parameters should be taken as $m_{\rm lat}=m- \frac 18 e^2 a$. The model with $m=0$ is shown to possess a discrete chiral symmetry that is generated by the unit lattice translation accompanied by the shift of the $θ$-angle by $π$. While the mass shift vanishes as the lattice spacing $a$ approaches zero, we find that including this shift greatly improves the rate of convergence to the continuum limit. We demonstrate the faster convergence using both numerical diagonalizations of finite lattice systems, as well as extrapolations of the lattice strong coupling expansions.

Two-dimensional O(n) models and logarithmic CFTs

We study O(n)-symmetric two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) for a continuous range of n below two. These CFTs describe the fixed point behavior of self-avoiding loops. There is a pair of known fixed points connected by an RG flow. When n is equal to two, which corresponds to the Kosterlitz-Thouless critical theory, the fixed points collide. We find that for n generic these CFTs are logarithmic and contain negative norm states; in particular, the O(n) currents belong to a staggered logarithmic multiplet. Using a conformal bootstrap approach we trace how the negative norm states decouple at n = 2, restoring unitarity. The IR fixed point possesses a local relevant operator, singlet under all known global symmetries of the CFT, and, nevertheless, it can be reached by an RG flow without tuning. Besides, we observe logarithmic correlators in the closely related Potts model.

The $\mathcal{N} = 2$ Prepotential and the Sphere Free Energy

We study the mass-deformed sphere free energy of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ superconformal field theories with holographic duals. Building on previous observations, we conjecture a proportionality relation between the sphere free energy on the boundary and the prepotential of the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supergravity theory in the bulk. We verify this formula by explicit computation in several examples of supergravity theories with vector multiplets and hypermultiplets.

The Holographic Contributions to the Sphere Free Energy

We study which bulk couplings contribute to the $S^3$ free energy $F(\mathfrak{m})$ of three-dimensional ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal field theories with holographic duals, potentially deformed by boundary real-mass parameters $\mathfrak{m}$. In particular, we show that $F(\mathfrak{m})$ is independent of a large class of bulk couplings that include non-chiral F-terms and all D-terms. On the other hand, in general, $F(\mathfrak{m})$ does depend non-trivially on bulk chiral F-terms, such as prepotential interactions, and on bulk real-mass terms. These conclusions can be reached solely from properties of the AdS super-algebra, $\mathfrak{osp}(2|4)$. We also consider massive vector multiplets in AdS, which in the dual field theory correspond to long single-trace superconformal multiplets of spin zero. We provide evidence that $F(\mathfrak{m})$ is insensitive to the vector multiplet mass and to the interaction couplings between the massive vector multiplet and massless ones. In particular, this implies that $F(\mathfrak{m})$ does not contain information about scaling dimensions or OPE coefficients of single-trace long scalar ${\cal N} = 2$ superconformal multiplets.

A functional approach to the numerical conformal bootstrap

We apply recently constructed functional bases to the numerical conformal bootstrap for 1D CFTs. We argue and show that numerical results in this basis converge much faster than the traditional derivative basis. In particular, truncations of the crossing equation with even a handful of components can lead to extremely accurate results, in opposition to hundreds of components in the usual approach. We explain how this is a consequence of the functional basis correctly capturing the asymptotics of bound-saturating extremal solutions to crossing. We discuss how these methods can and should be implemented in higher dimensional applications.

Walking, Weak first-order transitions, and Complex CFTs II. Two-dimensional Potts model at $Q>4$

We study complex CFTs describing fixed points of the two-dimensional $Q$-state Potts model with $Q>4$. Their existence is closely related to the weak first-order phase transition and walking RG behavior present in the real Potts model at $Q>4$. The Potts model, apart from its own significance, serves as an ideal playground for testing this very general relation. Cluster formulation provides nonperturbative definition for a continuous range of parameter $Q$, while Coulomb gas description and connection to minimal models provide some conformal data of the complex CFTs. We use one and two-loop conformal perturbation theory around complex CFTs to compute various properties of the real walking RG flow. These properties, such as drifting scaling dimensions, appear to be common features of the QFTs with walking RG flows, and can serve as a smoking gun for detecting walking in Monte Carlo simulations. The complex CFTs discussed in this work are perfectly well defined, and can in principle be seen in Monte Carlo simulations with complexified coupling constants. In particular, we predict a pair of $S_5$-symmetric complex CFTs with central charges $c\approx 1.138 \pm 0.021 i$ describing the fixed points of a 5-state dilute Potts model with complexified temperature and vacancy fugacity.

Walking, Weak first-order transitions, and Complex CFTs

We discuss walking behavior in gauge theories and weak first-order phase transitions in statistical physics. Despite appearing in very different systems (QCD below the conformal window, the Potts model, deconfined criticality) these two phenomena both imply approximate scale invariance in a range of energies and have the same RG interpretation: a flow passing between pairs of fixed point at complex coupling. We discuss what distinguishes a real theory from a complex theory and call these fixed points complex CFTs. By using conformal perturbation theory we show how observables of the walking theory are computable by perturbing the complex CFTs. This paper discusses the general mechanism while a companion paper [1] will treat a specific and computable example: the two-dimensional Q-state Potts model with Q > 4. Concerning walking in 4d gauge theories, we also comment on the (un)likelihood of the light pseudo-dilaton, and on non-minimal scenarios of the conformal window termination.

A scaling theory for the long-range to short-range crossover and an infrared duality

We study the second-order phase transition in the $d$-dimensional Ising model with long-range interactions decreasing as a power of the distance $1/r^{d+s}$. For $s$ below some known value $s_*$, the transition is described by a conformal field theory without a local stress tensor operator, with critical exponents varying continuously as functions of $s$. At $s=s_*$, the phase transition crosses over to the short-range universality class. While the location $s_*$ of this crossover has been known for 40 years, its physics has not been fully understood, the main difficulty being that the standard description of the long-range critical point is strongly coupled at the crossover. In this paper we propose another field-theoretic description which, on the contrary, is weakly coupled near the crossover. We use this description to clarify the nature of the crossover and make predictions about the critical exponents. That the same long-range critical point can be reached from two different UV descriptions provides a new example of infrared duality.

Long-range critical exponents near the short-range crossover

The $d$-dimensional long-range Ising model, defined by spin-spin interactions decaying with the distance as the power $1/r^{d+s}$, admits a second order phase transition with continuously varying critical exponents. At $s = s_*$, the phase transition crosses over to the usual short-range universality class. The standard field-theoretic description of this family of models is strongly coupled at the crossover. We find a new description, which is instead weakly coupled near the crossover, and use it to compute critical exponents. The existence of two complementary UV descriptions of the same long-range fixed point provides a novel example of infrared duality.

Non-gaussianity of the critical 3d Ising model

We discuss the 4pt function of the critical 3d Ising model, extracted from recent conformal bootstrap results. We focus on the non-gaussianity Q - the ratio of the 4pt function to its gaussian part given by three Wick contractions. This ratio reveals significant non-gaussianity of the critical fluctuations. The bootstrap results are consistent with a rigorous inequality due to Lebowitz and Aizenman, which limits Q to lie between 1/3 and 1.

Conformal Invariance in the Long-Range Ising Model

We consider the question of conformal invariance of the long-range Ising model at the critical point. The continuum description is given in terms of a nonlocal field theory, and the absence of a stress tensor invalidates all of the standard arguments for the enhancement of scale invariance to conformal invariance. We however show that several correlation functions, computed to second order in the epsilon expansion, are nontrivially consistent with conformal invariance. We proceed to give a proof of conformal invariance to all orders in the epsilon expansion, based on the description of the long-range Ising model as a defect theory in an auxiliary higher-dimensional space. A detailed review of conformal invariance in the d-dimensional short-range Ising model is also included and may be of independent interest.
