Finite-order exponential mixing does not imply the central limit theorem

We show that finite-order exponential mixing does not imply the central limit theorem for smooth diffeomorphisms. For every integer $R\geq2$, we construct a $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}$ diffeomorphism $T:M\to M$ of a compact smooth manifold $M$ and a $T$-invariant probability measure $μ$ such that $(T,μ)$ is exponentially mixing of order $R$ for $\mathcal{C}^1(M)$ observables, but not of order $2R+2$. For some centred observable $f_0\in\mathcal{C}^{\infty}(M)$, no subsequence of the normalised sums $\frac{1}{\sqrt n}\sum_{i=0}^{n-1}f_0\circ T^i$ converges in distribution to a Gaussian law. In particular, exponential decay of two-point correlations implies neither exponential mixing of all orders nor the central limit theorem. We realise $(T,μ)$ in two ways. In the first, $T$ is a fixed linear Anosov diffeomorphism of $\mathbb T^2$ and $μ$ is singular with respect to Lebesgue measure. In the second, $M$ can be any compact smooth surface without boundary and $μ$ is a physical measure whose statistical basin contains a nonempty open set. The main theorems have been formalised in Lean 4.

Conditional Stable Laws and Rare-Event Limits for Absorbing Markov Chains

We establish conditional limit theorems, pointwise in the initial state, for absorbing Markov chains on a compact metric space $M$. We assume $L^1(M,ρ)$-continuous transition densities, irreducibility and aperiodicity. For the observable $f_β(x)=d_M(x,x_0)^{-β}$, with suitable $x_0$ satisfying $ρ(B_r(x_0))\sim C_d(x_0)r^d$, we prove that the point-process of normalised observations converges to a Poisson random measure. This yields totally right-skewed $α$-stable laws for $α=d/β\in(0,2)$ and, at the boundary value $α=2$, a Gaussian limit with the non-standard normalisation $\sqrt{n\log n}$. We also establish a conditional central limit theorem for $L^2$ observables, exponential deviation bounds for bounded observables and a conditional Poisson law for visits to shrinking targets.

Conditioned stochastic stability of equilibrium states on uniformly hyperbolic sets

We establish the conditioned stochastic stability of equilibrium states for Hölder potentials on uniformly hyperbolic sets. While standard stochastic stability characterises measures on attractors, we analyse the statistics of transient dynamics on non-attracting sets by conditioning small random perturbations of the dynamics to not escape from our regions of interest. We prove that as the noise intensity vanishes, the quasi-ergodic measure of the $e^ϕ$-weighted process generated by $\e$-small random perturbations of the deterministic dynamics converges to the unique equilibrium state associated with the potential $ϕ- \log \left|\det \left. D T\right|_{E^u}\right|$. The results are obtained via perturbative spectral analysis of transfer operators acting on anisotropic Banach spaces and topological hyperbolic dynamics arguments. Furthermore, we extend this framework globally to Axiom A diffeomorphisms with multiple basic sets using dynamical filtrations. This work provides a rigorous characterisation of natural measures on uniformly hyperbolic repellers, which are fundamental in the context of transient chaos.

Conditioned stochastic stability of equilibrium states on uniformly expanding repellers

We propose a notion of conditioned stochastic stability of invariant measures on repellers: we consider whether quasi-ergodic measures of absorbing Markov processes, generated by random perturbations of the deterministic dynamics and conditioned upon survival in a neighbourhood of a repeller, converge to an invariant measure in the zero-noise limit. Under suitable choices of the random perturbation, we find that equilibrium states on uniformly expanding repellers are conditioned stochastically stable. In the process, we establish a rigorous foundation for the existence of ``natural measures'', which were proposed by Kantz and Grassberger in 1984 to aid the understanding of chaotic transients.
