Lattice Expansion in Seamless Bi layer Graphene Constrictions at High Bias

Our understanding of sp2 carbon nanostructures is still emerging and is important for the development of high performance all carbon devices. For example, in terms of the structural behavior of graphene or bi-layer graphene at high bias, little to nothing is known. To this end we investigated bi-layer graphene constrictions with closed edges (seamless) at high bias using in situ atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy. We directly observe a highly localized anomalously large lattice expansion inside the constriction. Both the current density and lattice expansion increase as the bi-layer graphene constriction narrows. As the constriction width decreases below 10 nm, shortly before failure, the current density rises to 4 \cdot 109 A cm-2 and the constriction exhibits a lattice expansion with a uniaxial component showing an expansion approaching 5 % and an isotropic component showing an expansion exceeding 1 %. The origin of the lattice expansion is hard to fully ascribe to thermal expansion. Impact ionization is a process in which charge carriers transfer from bonding states to antibonding states thus weakening bonds. The altered character of C-C bonds by impact ionization could explain the anomalously large lattice expansion we observe in seamless bi-layer graphene constrictions. Moreover, impact ionization might also contribute to the observed anisotropy in the lattice expansion, although strain is probably the predominant factor.

Graphene at high bias: cracking, layer by layer sublimation and fusing

Graphene and few-layer graphene at high bias expose a wealth of phenomena due to the high temperatures reached. With in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) we observe directly how the current modifies the structure, and vice versa. In some samples, cracks propagate from the edges of the flakes, leading to the formation of narrow constrictions or to nanometer spaced gaps after breakdown. In other samples we find layer-by-layer evaporation of few-layer graphene, which could be exploited for the controlled production of single layer graphene from multi-layered samples. Surprisingly, we even find that two pieces of graphene that overlap can heal out at high bias and form one continuous sheet. These findings open up new avenues to structure graphene for specific device applications.

Generic Fe buffer layers for Fe-based superconductors: Epitaxial FeSe1-xTex thin films

Biaxially textured FeSe1-xTex films have been realized on Fe-buffered MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Similar to the Fe/BaFe2As2 bilayers, the crystalline quality of FeSe1-xTex films exhibit a sharp out-of-plane and in-plane texture less than 0.9°. The Fe/FeSe1-xTex bilayers showed high superconducting transition temperatures of over 17 K. The angular-dependent critical current densities exhibit peaks positioned at H // ab similar to other pnictide thin films. The volume pinning force of FeSe1-xTex in this direction is very strong compared with that of Co-doped BaFe2As2, due to a good matching between the interlayer distance in the c direction and the out-of-plane coherence length.

As-vacancies, local moments, and Pauli limiting in LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_(1-delta) superconductors

We report magnetization measurements of As-deficient LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_1-delta (delta about 0.06) samples with improved superconducting properties as compared with As-stoichiometric optimally doped La-1111 samples. In this As-deficient system with almost homogeneously distributed As-vacancies (AV), as suggested by the (75)As-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements,we observe a strong enhancement of the spin-susceptibility by a factor of 3-7. This observation is attributed to the presence of an electronically localized state around each AV, carrying a magnetic moment of about 3.2 mu_Bohr per AV or 0.8 mu_Bohr/Fe atom. From theoretical considerations we find that the formation of a local moment on neighboring iron sites of an AV sets in when the local Coulomb interaction exceeds a critical value of about 1.0 eV in the dilute limit. Its estimated value amounts to ~ 2.5 eV and implies an upper bound of ~ 2 eV for the Coulomb repulsion at Fe sites beyond the first neighbor-shell of an AV. Electronic correlations are thus moderate/weak in doped La-1111. The strongly enhanced spin susceptibility is responsible for the Pauli limiting behavior of the superconductivity that we observe in As-deficient LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_1-delta. In contrast, no Pauli limiting behavior is found for the optimally doped, As-stoichiometric LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs superconductor in accord with its low spin susceptibility.

Carbon nanotube based biomedical agents for heating, temperature sensoring and drug delivery

Due to their extraordinary physical and chemical properties carbon nanotubes reveal a promising potential as biomedical agents for heating, temperature sensoring and drug delivery on the cellular level. Filling carbon nanotubes with tailored materials realises nanoscaled containers in which the active content is encapsulated by a protecting carbon shell. We describe different synthesis routes and show the structural and magnetic properties of carbon nanotubes. In particular, the filling with magnetic materials offers the potential for hyperthermia applications while the insertion of NMR active substances allows the usage as markers and sensors. The potential of carbon nanotubes for biomedical applications is highlighted by hyperthermia studies which prove their applicability for local in-situ heating. In addition we have shown that a non-invasive temperature control by virtue of a carbon-wrapped nanoscaled thermometer and filling with anti-cancer drugs is possible.

Dressing of the charge carriers in high-Tc superconductors

In this contribution we review recent ARPES results on the dressing of the charge carriers in high-temperature superconductors. After an introduction into the cuprates and their electronic structure, ARPES, the spectral function and the self-energy function in the normal state and in the superconducting state is discussed.. Finally results on the dressing of the charge carriers in the system Bi2Sr2caCu2O7 at the nodal and the antinodal point are presented.

The Local Structure of La1.65Eu0.2Sr 0.15CuO4 determined by 63Cu NMR Spectroscopy and Van Vleck Paramagnetism of Eu3+ Ions

We investigate the local symmetry of the tilting of the CuO$_6$ octahedra in La$_{\rm 1.65}$Eu$_{\rm 0.2}$Sr$_{\rm 0.15}$CuO$_{4}$ by means of $^{63}$Cu NMR spectroscopy and the Van Vleck susceptibility of the $\rm Eu^{3+}$ ions. The Cu NMR central line lineshape is sensitive to local structure through the coupling of the $^{63}\rm Cu$ nuclear quadrupole moment to the local electric field gradient. The $\rm Eu^{3+}$ Van Vleck susceptibility, as a single ion effect, locally probes the symmetry of the crystal field at the Eu site. Both techniques independently provide clear evidence for a change of the local tilt symmetry at the first order structural transition from the orthorhombic to the low temperature tetragonal phase, in excellent agreement with the average structure obtained by diffraction techniques. We conclude that the symmetry of the average crystal structure accurately represents the symmetry of the octahedral tilt pattern on a local scale.
