Benchmarks for single-phase flow in fractured porous media

This paper presents several test cases intended to be benchmarks for numerical schemes for single-phase fluid flow in fractured porous media. A number of solution strategies are compared, including a vertex and a cell-centered finite volume method, a non-conforming embedded discrete fracture model, a primal and a dual extended finite element formulation, and a mortar discrete fracture model. The proposed benchmarks test the schemes by increasing the difficulties in terms of network geometry, e.g. intersecting fractures, and physical parameters, e.g. low and high fracture-matrix permeability ratio as well as heterogeneous fracture permeabilities. For each problem, the results presented by the participants are the number of unknowns, the approximation errors in the porous matrix and in the fractures with respect to a reference solution, and the sparsity and condition number of the discretized linear system. All data and meshes used in this study are publicly available for further comparisons.

The Dune FoamGrid implementation for surface and network grids

We present FoamGrid, a new implementation of the DUNE grid interface. FoamGrid implements one- and two-dimensional grids in a physical space of arbitrary dimension, which allows for grids for curved domains. Even more, the grids are not expected to have a manifold structure, i.e., more than two elements can share a common facet. This makes FoamGrid the grid data structure of choice for simulating structures such as foams, discrete fracture networks, or network flow problems. FoamGrid implements adaptive non-conforming refinement with element parametrizations. As an additional feature it allows removal and addition of elements in an existing grid, which makes FoamGrid suitable for network growth problems. We show how to use FoamGrid, with particular attention to the extensions of the grid interface needed to handle non-manifold topology and grid growth. Three numerical examples demonstrate the possibilities offered by FoamGrid.

The Localized Reduced Basis Multiscale method for two-phase flows in porous media

In this work, we propose a novel model order reduction approach for two-phase flow in porous media by introducing a formulation in which the mobility, which realizes the coupling between phase saturations and phase pressures, is regarded as a parameter to the pressure equation. Using this formulation, we introduce the Localized Reduced Basis Multiscale method to obtain a low-dimensional surrogate of the high-dimensional pressure equation. By applying ideas from model order reduction for parametrized partial differential equations, we are able to split the computational effort for solving the pressure equation into a costly offline step that is performed only once and an inexpensive online step that is carried out in every time step of the two-phase flow simulation, which is thereby largely accelerated. Usage of elements from numerical multiscale methods allows us to displace the computational intensity between the offline and online step to reach an ideal runtime at acceptable error increase for the two-phase flow simulation.
