A polyhedral characterization of quasi-ordinary singularities

Given an irreducible hypersurface singularity of dimension $d$ (defined by a polynomial $f\in K[[ {\bf x} ]][z]$) and the projection to the affine space defined by $K[[ {\bf x} ]]$, we construct an invariant which detects whether the singularity is quasi-ordinary with respect to the projection. The construction uses a weighted version of Hironaka's characteristic polyhedron and successive embeddings of the singularity in affine spaces of higher dimensions. When $ f $ is quasi-ordinary, our invariant determines the semigroup of the singularity and hence it encodes the embedded topology of the singularity $ \{ f = 0 \} $ in a neighbourhood of the origin when $ K = \mathbb{C};$ moreover, the construction yields the approximate roots, giving a new point of view on this subject.

Invariance of Hironaka's characteristic polyhedron

We show that given a face of Hironaka's characteristic polyhedron, it does only depend on the singularity and a flag defined by the linear form determining the face. As a consequence we get that certain numerical data obtained from the characteristic polyhedron are invariants of the singularity. In particular, they do not depend on an embedding.

Partial local resolution by characteristic zero methods

We discuss to what extent the local techniques of resolution of singularities over fields of characteristic zero can be applied to improve singularities in general. For certain interesting classes of singularities, this leads to an embedded resolution via blowing ups in regular centers. We illustrate this for generic determinantal varieties. The article is partially expository and is addressed to non-experts who aim to construct resolutions for other special classes of singularities in positive or mixed characteristic.
