Towards a universal phase diagram of planar chiral magnets

In planar chiral magnets, the competition of the positive definite Heisenberg exchange and Zeeman energies with the indefinite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) energy allows for the possibility of negative energy ground states, and leads to an intricate dependence of the ground states on the parameters of the theory. In this paper, we consider arbitrary spiralization tensors for the DMI interaction and arbitrary directions for the external magnetic field, and study the nature of the ground states in this parameter space, using a combination of analytical and numerical methods. Classifying ground states by their symmetry into ferromagnetic (invariant under under arbitrary translations in the plane), spiral (invariant under arbitrary translations in one direction) and skyrmion lattice ground states (invariant under a two dimensional lattice group), we give a complete description of the phase diagram of this class of theories.

Classical dynamical $r$-matrices for the Chern-Simons formulation of generalised 3d gravity

Classical dynamical $r$-matrices arise naturally in the combinatorial description of the phase space of Chern-Simons theories, either through the inclusion of dynamical sources or through a gauge-fixing procedure involving two punctures. Here we consider classical dynamical $r$-matrices for the family of Lie algebras which arise in the Chern-Simons formulation of 3d gravity, for any value of the cosmological constant. We derive differential equations for classical dynamical $r$-matrices in this case, and show that they can be viewed as generalised complexifications, in a sense which we define, of the equations governing dynamical $r$-matrices for $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ and $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$. We obtain explicit families of solutions and relate them, via Weierstrass factorisation, to solutions found by Feher, Gabor, Marshall, Palla and Pusztai in the context of chiral WZWN models.

Spectral Geometry of Nuts and Bolts

We study the spectrum of Laplace operators on a one-parameter family of gravitational instantons of bi-axial Bianchi IX type coupled to an abelian connection with self-dual curvature. The family of geometries includes the Taub-NUT, Taub-bolt and Euclidean Schwarzschild geometries and interpolates between them. The interpolating geometries have conical singularities along a submanifold of co-dimension two, but we prove that the associated Laplace operators have natural self-adjoint extensions and study their spectra. In particular, we determine the essential spectrum and prove that its complement, the discrete spectrum, is infinite. We compute these eigenvalues numerically and compare the numerical results with an analytical approximation derived from the asymptotic Taub-NUT form of each of the geometries in our family.

$D_k$ Gravitational Instantons as Superpositions of Atiyah-Hitchin and Taub-NUT Geometries

We obtain $D_k$ ALF gravitational instantons by a gluing construction which captures, in a precise and explicit fashion, their interpretation as non-linear superpositions of the moduli space of centred $SU(2)$ monopoles, equipped with the Atiyah-Hitchin metric, and $k$ copies of the Taub-NUT manifold. The construction proceeds from a finite set of points in euclidean space, reflection symmetric about the origin, and depends on an adiabatic parameter which is incorporated into the geometry as a fifth dimension. Using a formulation in terms of hyperKähler triples on manifolds with boundaries, we show that the constituent Atiyah-Hitchin and Taub-NUT geometries arise as boundary components of the 5-dimensional geometry as the adiabatic parameter is taken to zero.

Solvable Models of Magnetic Skyrmions

We give a succinct summary of the recently discovered solvable models of magnetic skyrmions in two dimensions, and of their general solutions. The models contain the standard Heisenberg term, the most general translation invariant Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction term and, for each DM term, a particular combination of anisotropy and Zeeman potentials. We argue that simple mathematical features of the explicit solutions help understand general qualitative properties of magnetic skyrmion configurations in more generic models.

Gauged Sigma Models and Magnetic Skyrmions

We define a gauged non-linear sigma model for a 2-sphere valued field and a $SU(2)$ connection on an arbitrary Riemann surface whose energy functional reduces to that for critically coupled magnetic skyrmions in the plane, with arbitrary Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, for a suitably chosen gauge field. We use the interplay of unitary and holomorphic structures to derive a general solution of the first order Bogomol'nyi equation of the model for any given connection. We illustrate this formula with examples, and also point out applications to the study of impurities

Michael Atiyah and Physics: the Later Years

I review aspects of Michael Atiyah's research in fundamental theoretical physics during the last ten years of his life, and contrast his deliberate interest in physics during this period with the inadvertent impact on physics of his early mathematical work.

Non-commutative waves for gravitational anyons

We revisit the representation theory of the quantum double of the universal cover of the Lorentz group in 2+1 dimensions, motivated by its role as a deformed Poincaré symmetry and symmetry algebra in (2+1)-dimensional quantum gravity. We express the unitary irreducible representations in terms of covariant, infinite-component fields on curved momentum space satisfying algebraic spin and mass constraints. Adapting and applying the method of group Fourier transforms, we obtain covariant fields on (2+1)-dimensional Minkowski space which necessarily depend on an additional internal and circular dimension. The momentum space constraints turn into differential or exponentiated differential operators, and the group Fourier transform induces a star product on Minkowski space and the internal space which is essentially a version of Rieffel's deformation quantisation via convolution.

Hyperbolic vortices and Dirac fields in 2+1 dimensions

Starting from the geometrical interpretation of integrable vortices on two-dimensional hyperbolic space as conical singularities, we explain how this picture can be expressed in the language of Cartan connections, and how it can be lifted to the double cover of three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space viewed as a trivial circle bundle over hyperbolic space. We show that vortex configurations on the double cover of AdS space give rise to solutions of the Dirac equation minimally coupled to the magnetic field of the vortex. After stereographic projection to (2+1)-dimensional Minkowski space we obtain, from each lifted hyperbolic vortex, a Dirac field and an abelian gauge field which solve a Lorentzian, (2+1)-dimensional version of the Seiberg-Witten equations.

Magnetic Zero-Modes, Vortices and Cartan Geometry

We show that magnetic zero-modes of the Dirac operator on $\mathbb{R}^3$ which obey an additional non-linear equation are closely related to vortex configurations on the 2-sphere, and that both are best understood in terms of the geometry induced on the 3-sphere via pull-back of the round geometry with bundle maps of the Hopf fibration. We use this viewpoint to deduce a manifestly smooth formula for square-integrable magnetic zero-modes in terms of two homogeneous polynomials in two complex variables.

Time evolution in a geometric model of a particle

We analyse the properties of a (4+1)-dimensional Ricci-flat spacetime which may be viewed as an evolving Taub-NUT geometry, and give exact solutions of the Maxwell and gauged Dirac equation on this background. We interpret these solutions in terms of a geometric model of the electron and its spin, and discuss links between the resulting picture and Dirac's Large Number Hypothesis.

Dirac operators on the Taub-NUT space, monopoles and SU(2) representations

We analyse the normalisable zero-modes of the Dirac operator on the Taub-NUT manifold coupled to an abelian gauge field with self-dual curvature, and interpret them in terms of the zero modes of the Dirac operator on the 2-sphere coupled to a Dirac monopole. We show that the space of zero modes decomposes into a direct sum of irreducible SU(2) representations of all dimensions up to a bound determined by the spinor charge with respect to the abelian gauge group. Our decomposition provides an interpretation of an index formula due to Pope and provides a possible model for spin in recently proposed geometric models of matter.

Generalised Chern-Simons actions for 3d gravity and kappa-Poincare symmetry

We consider Chern-Simons theories for the Poincare, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter groups in three dimensions which generalise the Chern-Simons formulation of 3d gravity. We determine conditions under which kappa-Poincare symmetry and its de Sitter and anti-de Sitter analogues can be associated to these theories as quantised symmetries. Assuming the usual form of those symmetries, with a timelike vector as deformation parameter, we find that such an association is possible only in the de Sitter case, and that the associated Chern-Simons action is not the gravitational one. Although the resulting theory and 3d gravity have the same equations of motion for the gauge field, they are not equivalent, even classically, since they differ in their symplectic structure and the coupling to matter. We deduce that kappa-Poincare symmetry is not associated to either classical or quantum gravity in three dimensions. Starting from the (non-gravitational) Chern-Simons action we explain how to construct a multi-particle model which is invariant under the classical analogue of kappa-de Sitter symmetry, and carry out the first steps in that construction.

Quaternionic and Poisson-Lie structures in 3d gravity: the cosmological constant as deformation parameter

Each of the local isometry groups arising in 3d gravity can be viewed as the group of unit (split) quaternions over a ring which depends on the cosmological constant. In this paper we explain and prove this statement, and use it as a unifying framework for studying Poisson structures associated with the local isometry groups. We show that, in all cases except for Euclidean signature with positive cosmological constant, the local isometry groups are equipped with the Poisson-Lie structure of a classical double. We calculate the dressing action of the factor groups on each other and find, amongst others, a simple and unified description of the symplectic leaves of SU(2) and SL(2,R). We also compute the Poisson structure on the dual Poisson-Lie groups of the local isometry groups and on their Heisenberg doubles; together, they determine the Poisson structure of the phase space of 3d gravity in the so-called combinatorial description.

N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory on a Kaehler Surface

We study N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a Kaehler manifold with $b_2^+ \geq 3$. Adding suitable perturbations we show that the partition function of the N=4 theory is the sum of contributions from two branches: (i) instantons, (ii) a special class of Seiberg-Witten monopoles. We determine the partition function for the theories with gauge group SU(2) and SO(3), using S-duality. This leads us to a formula for the Euler characteristic of the moduli space of instantons.
