A Family of Gauss Type Hadamard Difference Sets

A Hadamard difference set (HDS) $D$ of order $u^2$ in an abelian group $G$ satisfies $|\chi(D)|=u$ for every nontrivial character $\chi$ of $G$. We call such a character value naive if it is divisible by $u$, i.e., if it is equal to $u$ times a root of unity. All previously known abelian HDSs only have naive character values. We show that for $d\ge 1$ and $u=3d$, a group $Z_3^2\times H$, with $H$ an abelian group of order $2^{2d+2}$, contains a HDS of order $u^2$ with non-naive character values if and only if $8\le\exp H\le 2^{d+2}$. All difference sets obtained are new. The proof rests on a specific HDS in $Z_3^2\times Z_8\times Z_2$, a covering extended building set on $Z_3^2\times Z_8\times Z_4$, and a variation of the Davis-Jedwab recursive construction.

Controlled density-downramp injection in a beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerator

This paper describes the utilization of beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration to implement a high-quality plasma cathode via density-downramp injection in a short injector stage at the FLASHForward facility at DESY. Electron beams with charge of up to 105 pC and energy spread of a few percent were accelerated by a tunable effective accelerating field of up to 2.7 GV/m. The plasma cathode was operated drift-free with very high injection efficiency. Sources of jitter, the emittance and divergence of the resulting beam were investigated and modeled, as were strategies for performance improvements that would further increase the wide-ranging applications for a plasma cathode with the demonstrated operational stability

Bilinear Forms on Finite Abelian Groups and Group-Invariant Butson Hadamard Matrices

Let $K$ be a finite abelian group and let $\exp(K)$ denote the least common multiple of the orders of the elements of $K$. A $BH(K,h)$ matrix is a $K$-invariant $|K|\times |K|$ matrix $H$ whose entries are complex $h$th roots of unity such that $HH^*=|K|I$, where $H^*$ denotes the complex conjugate transpose of $H$, and $I$ is the identity matrix of order $|K|$. Let $ν_p(x)$ denote the $p$-adic valuation of the integer $x$. Using bilinear forms on $K$, we show that a $BH(K,h)$ exists whenever (i) $ν_p(h) \geq \lceil ν_p(\exp(K))/2 \rceil$ for every prime divisor $p$ of $|K|$ and (ii) $ν_2(h) \ge 2$ if $ν_2(|K|)$ is odd and $K$ has a direct factor $\mathbb{Z}_2$. Employing the field descent method, we prove that these conditions are necessary for the existence of a $BH(K,h)$ matrix in the case where $K$ is cyclic of prime power order.

Upper Bounds for Cyclotomic Numbers

Let $q$ be a power of a prime $p$, let $k$ be a nontrivial divisor of $q-1$ and write $e=(q-1)/k$. We study upper bounds for cyclotomic numbers $(a,b)$ of order $e$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. A general result of our study is that $(a,b)\leq 3$ for all $a,b \in \mathbb{Z}$ if $p> (\sqrt{14})^{k/ord_k(p)}$. More conclusive results will be obtained through separate investigation of the five types of cyclotomic numbers: $(0,0), (0,a), (a,0), (a,a)$ and $(a,b)$, where $a\neq b$ and $a,b \in \{1,\dots,e-1\}$. The main idea we use is to transform equations over $\mathbb{F}_q$ into equations over the field of complex numbers on which we have more information. A major tool for the improvements we obtain over known results is new upper bounds on the norm of cyclotomic integers.

Unique Differences in Symmetric Subsets of $\mathbb{F}_p$

Let $p$ be a prime and let $A$ be a subset of $\mathbb{F}_p$ with $A=-A$ and $|A\setminus\{0\}| \leq 2\log_3(p)$. Then there is an element of $\mathbb{F}_p$ which has a unique representation as a difference of two elements of $A$.

100 GHz Room-Temperature Laboratory Emission Spectrometer

We present first results of a new heterodyne spectrometer dedicated to high-resolution spectroscopy of molecules of astrophysical importance. The spectrometer, based on a roomtemperature heterodyne receiver, is sensitive to frequencies between 75 and 110 GHz with an instantaneous bandwidth of currently 2.5 GHz in a single sideband. The system performance, in particular the sensitivity and stability, is evaluated. Proof of concept of this spectrometer is demonstrated by recording the emission spectrum of methyl cyanide, CH3CN. Compared to state-of-the-art radio telescope receivers the instrument is less sensitive by about one order of magnitude. Nevertheless, the capability for absolute intensity measurements can be exploited in various experiments, in particular for the interpretation of the ever richer spectra in the ALMA era. The ease of operation at room-temperature allows for long time integration, the fast response time for integration in chirped pulse instruments or for recording time dependent signals. Future prospects as well as limitations of the receiver for the spectroscopy of complex organic molecules (COMs) are discussed.

Longitudinal Bunch Diagnostics using Coherent Transition Radiation Spectroscopy

The generation and properties of transition radiation (TR) are thoroughly treated. The spectral energy density, as described by the Ginzburg-Frank formula, is computed analytically, and the modifications caused by the finite size of the TR screen and by near-field diffraction effects are carefully analyzed. The principles of electron bunch shape reconstruction using coherent transition radiation are outlined. Spectroscopic measure- ments yield only the magnitude of the longitudinal form factor but not its phase. Two phase retrieval methods are investigated and illustrated with model calculations: analytic phase computation by means of the Kramers- Kronig dispersion relation, and iterative phase retrieval. Particular attention is paid to the ambiguities which are unavoidable in the reconstruction of longitudinal charge density profiles from spectroscopic data. The origin of these ambiguities has been identified and a thorough mathematical analysis is presented. The experimental part of the paper comprises a description of our multichannel infrared and THz spectrometer and a selection of measurements at FLASH, comparing the bunch profiles derived from spectroscopic data with those determined with a transversely deflecting microwave structure. A rigorous derivation of the Kramers-Kronig phase formula is presented in Appendix A. Numerous analytic model calculations can be found in Appendix B. The differences between normal and truncated Gaussians are discussed in Appendix C. Finally, Appendix D contains a short description of the propagation of an electromagnetic wave front by two-dimensional fast Fourier transformation. This is the basis of a powerful numerical Mathematica code THzTransport, which permits the propagation of electromagnetic wave fronts through a beam line consisting of drift spaces, lenses, mirrors and apertures.

Optimizing Scrubbing by Netlist Analysis for FPGA Configuration Bit Classification and Floorplanning

Existing scrubbing techniques for SEU mitigation on FPGAs do not guarantee an error-free operation after SEU recovering if the affected configuration bits do belong to feedback loops of the implemented circuits. In this paper, we a) provide a netlist-based circuit analysis technique to distinguish so-called critical configuration bits from essential bits in order to identify configuration bits which will need also state-restoring actions after a recovered SEU and which not. Furthermore, b) an alternative classification approach using fault injection is developed in order to compare both classification techniques. Moreover, c) we will propose a floorplanning approach for reducing the effective number of scrubbed frames and d), experimental results will give evidence that our optimization methodology not only allows to detect errors earlier but also to minimize the Mean-Time-To-Repair (MTTR) of a circuit considerably. In particular, we show that by using our approach, the MTTR for datapath-intensive circuits can be reduced by up to 48.5% in comparison to standard approaches.

Electron beam profile imaging in the presence of coherent optical radiation effects

High-brightness electron beams with low energy spread at existing and future x-ray free-electron lasers are affected by various collective beam self-interactions and microbunching instabilities. The corresponding coherent optical radiation effects, e.g., coherent optical transition radiation, render electron beam profile imaging impossible and become a serious issue for all kinds of electron beam diagnostics using imaging screens. Furthermore, coherent optical radiation effects can also be related to intrinsically ultrashort electron bunches or the existence of ultrashort spikes inside the electron bunches. In this paper, we discuss methods to suppress coherent optical radiation effects both by electron beam profile imaging in dispersive beamlines and by using scintillation imaging screens in combination with separation techniques. The suppression of coherent optical emission in dispersive beamlines is shown by analytical calculations, numerical simulations, and measurements. Transverse and longitudinal electron beam profile measurements in the presence of coherent optical radiation effects in non-dispersive beamlines are demonstrated by applying a temporal separation technique.

MSGC Development for HERA-B

The Inner Tracker System of the HERA-B experiment at DESY consists of 184 Microstrip Gas Chambers (MSGC) with a total number of 147 456 electronic read out channels. The detectors have to cope with particle fluxes up to 25 kHz/mm**2 and to tolerate radiation doses of 1 Mrad per year. During the development of these chambers it was found that conventional MSGC, operated in intenses hadronic fluxes, are rapidly destroyed due to induced discharges. The introduction of a Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) as pre-amplification structure offers the possibility to build robust and reliable detectors allowing for ample gain reserve in the hostile environment of HERA-B.
