Cosmological Spacetimes with Sign-Changing Spatial Curvature and Topological Transitions

Observational evidence, together with practical computations and modeling, supports a Euclidean spatial sector in the current cosmological model based on the FLRW metric. This, however, would imply that the total amount of matter and energy immediately after the Big Bang must have been infinite, an implication that could only be avoided through a transition from a closed to an open universe, a process forbidden in standard FLRW models. In this article, we investigate the spacetimes resulting from promoting the spatial curvature $k$ in FLRW spacetimes to a time-dependent function, $k \to k(t)$, allowing it to change sign and thereby allowing changes in the topology of the constant-$t$ slices. Although previously dismissed due to a classical theorem by Geroch, such transitions are shown to be consistent with global hyperbolicity when the comoving time is distinct from a Cauchy time, as recent work by one of the authors demonstrates. We construct three distinct geometries exhibiting this behavior using different representations of constant-curvature spaces. We analyze their global properties and identify mild conditions under which they remain globally hyperbolic. Furthermore, we characterize their Killing vectors, proving a general result for spherically symmetric spacetimes and compare them with known geometries in the literature.

Finite size effects in DBI and Born-Infeld for screened spherically symmetric objects

We study finite size effects on the linear response of spherically symmetric objects in Born-Infeld (BI) electromagnetism and Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) scalar field theories. Previous works show that the linear response coefficients for a point-like source vanish for odd multipoles above the dipole, a feature that resembles the vanishing of Love numbers for black holes. This work goes beyond the point-like idealisation and considers a sphere of finite radius. We find that the vanishing of the linear response coefficients ceases as they acquire a correction due to the finite size of the object. This introduces a hierarchy between the even and odd multipoles of the response coefficients determined by the separation of scales between the radius of the sphere and the screening scale of non-linearities. From a phenomenological viewpoint, the hierarchy between the odd and even multipoles would give access to the screening scale and the object's radius by measuring the behaviour of the potentials at infinity.

(Non-)uniqueness of Einstein-Palatini Gravity

We analyse the most general connection allowed by Einstein-Hilbert theory in Palatini formalism. We also consider a matter lagrangian independent of the affine connection. We show that any solution of the equation of the connection is essentially Levi-Civita up to a term that contains an undetermined 1-form. Finally, it is proved that these connections and Levi-Civita describe a completely equivalent physics.

La invariancia de la masa en Relatividad Especial

We correct an error that occurs with certain frequency in popular literature of Special Relativity, namely that supposedly that mass of moving objects depends on the relative velocity of the object and the observer. In this pedagogical paper, we explain that it is more correct to state that the linear momentum and the kinetic energy increase with velocity, while the mass is in fact an invariant, independent of the motion of the object and of the observer. We give a few paradoxes that arise if one assumes a mass-dependent velocity.

On the topological character of metric-affine Lovelock Lagrangians in critical dimensions

In this paper we prove that the $k$-th order metric-affine Lovelock Lagrangian is not a total derivative in the critical dimension $n=2k$ in the presence of non-trivial non-metricity. We use a bottom-up approach, starting with the study of the simplest cases, Einstein-Palatini in two dimensions and Gauss-Bonnet-Palatini in four dimensions, and focus then on the critical Lovelock Lagrangian of arbitrary order. The two-dimensional Einstein-Palatini case is solved completely and the most general solution is provided. For the Gauss-Bonnet case, we first give a particular configuration that violates at least one of the equations of motion and then show explicitly that the theory is not a pure boundary term. Finally, we make a similar analysis for the $k$-th order critical Lovelock Lagrangian, proving that the equation of the coframe is identically satisfied, while the one of the connection only holds for some configurations. In addition to this, we provide some families of non-trivial solutions.

A non-trivial connection for the metric-affine Gauss-Bonnet theory in $D = 4$

We study non-trivial (i.e. non-Levi-Civita) connections in metric-affine Lovelock theories. First we study the projective invariance of general Lovelock actions and show that all connections constructed by acting with a projective transformation of the Levi-Civita connection are allowed solutions, albeit physically equivalent to Levi-Civita. We then show that the (non-integrable) Weyl connection is also a solution for the specific case of the four-dimensional metric-affine Gauss-Bonnet action, for arbritrary vector fields. The existence of this solution is related to a two-vector family of transformations, that leaves the Gauss-Bonnet action invariant when acting on metric-compatible connections. We argue that this solution is physically inequivalent to the Levi-Civita connection, giving thus a counterexample to the statement that the metric and the Palatini formalisms are equivalent for Lovelock gravities. We discuss the mathematical structure of the set of solutions within the space of connections.

Projective symmetries and induced electromagnetism in metric-affine gravity

We present a framework in which the projective symmetry of the Einstein-Hilbert action in metric-affine gravity is used to induce an effective coupling between the Dirac lagrangian and the Maxwell field. The effective $U(1)$ gauge potential arises as the trace of the non-metricity tensor $Q_{μa}{}^a$ and couples in the appropriate way to the Dirac fields to in order to allow for local phase shifts. On shell, the obtained theory is equivalent to Einstein-Cartan-Maxwell theory in presence of Dirac spinors.

On the (non-)uniqueness of the Levi-Civita solution in the Einstein-Hilbert-Palatini formalism

We study the most general solution for affine connections that are compatible with the variational principle in the Palatini formalism for the Einstein-Hilbert action (with possible minimally coupled matter terms). We find that there is a family of solutions generalising the Levi-Civita connection, characterised by an arbitrary, non-dynamical vector field ${\cal A}_μ$. We discuss the mathematical properties and the physical implications of this family and argue that, although there is a clear mathematical difference between these new Palatini connections and the Levi-Civita one, both unparametrised geodesics and the Einstein equation are shared by all of them. Moreover, the Palatini connections are characterised precisely by these two properties, as well as by other properties of its parallel transport. Based on this, we conclude that physical effects associated to the choice of one or the other will not be distinguishable, at least not at the level of solutions or test particle dynamics. We propose a geometrical interpretation for the existence and unobservability of the new solutions.

BPS domain walls from backreacted orientifolds

Compactifications with D-brane and orientifold sources lead to standard gauged supergravity theories if the sources are smeared over the internal directions. It is therefore of interest to find how the solutions described by the gauged supergravity are altered by properly localising the sources. In this paper we analyse this for BPS domain wall solutions in the seven-dimensional gauged supergravity obtained from an O6 toroidal orientifold compactification in massive IIA supergravity. This is one of the simplest no-scale supergravities that can be constructed and analysed in full detail. We find and discuss the BPS domain walls both when the O6 planes are smeared and localised. When the O6 planes are localised the domain wall solutions live in a warped compactification. In order to get explicit expressions we also consider the non-compact versions of the solutions for which the O6 planes have been traded for D6 branes. Through T-duality we obtain partially localised solutions for compactifications to four dimensions using O3 planes with 3-form fluxes.

Einstein Branes

We generalise the standard, flat p-brane solutions sourced by a dilaton and a form field, by taking the worldvolume to be a curved Einstein space, such as (anti-)de Sitter space. Our method is based on reducing the p-branes to domain walls and then allowing these domain walls to be curved. For de Sitter worldvolumes this extends some recently constructed warped de Sitter non-compactifications. We restrict our analysis to solutions that possess scaling behavior and demonstrate that these scaling solutions are near-horizon limits of a more general solution. Finally, our framework can equally be used for spacelike branes and the uplift of the domain wall/cosmology correspondence becomes in this context a more general timelike/spacelike brane correspondence.

The group structure of non-Abelian NS-NS transformations

We study the transformations of the worldvolume fields of a system of multiple coinciding D-branes under gauge transformations of the supergravity Kalb-Ramond field. We find that the pure gauge part of these NS-NS transformations can be written as a U(N) symmetry of the underlying Yang-Mills group, but that in general the full NS-NS variations get mixed up non-trivially with the U(N). We compute the commutation relations and the Jacobi identities of the bigger group formed by the NS-NS and U(N) transformations.

The Palatini formalism for higher-curvature gravity theories

We compare the metric and the Palatini formalism to obtain the Einstein equations in the presence of higher-order curvature corrections that consist of contractions of the Riemann tensor, but not of its derivatives. We find that in general the two formalisms are not equivalent and that the set of solutions of the Palatini equations is a non-trivial subset of the solutions of the metric equations. However we also argue that for Lovelock gravities, the equivalence of the two formalism holds completely and give an explanation of why it holds precisely for these theories.

Palatini versus metric formulation in higher curvature gravity

We compare the metric and the Palatini formalism to obtain the Einstein equations in the presence of higher-order curvature corrections that consist of contractions of the Riemann tensor, but not of its derivatives. We find that there is a class of theories for which the two formalisms are equivalent. This class contains the Palatini version of Lovelock theory, but also more Lagrangians that are not Lovelock, but respect certain symmetries. For the general case, we find that imposing the Levi-Civita connection as an Ansatz, the Palatini formalism is contained within the metric formalism, in the sense that any solution of the former also appears as a solution of the latter, but not necessarily the other way around. Finally we give the conditions the solutions of the metric equations should satisfy in order to solve the Palatini equations.

A first-order formalism for timelike and spacelike brane solutions

We show that the construction of BPS-type equations for non-extremal black holes due to Miller et. al. can be extended to branes of arbitrary dimension and, more importantly, to time-dependent solutions. We call these first-order equations fake- or pseudo-BPS equations in light of the formalism that has been developed for domain wall and cosmological solutions of gravity coupled to scalar fields. We present the fake/pseudo-BPS equations for all stationary branes (timelike branes) and all time-dependent branes (spacelike branes) of an Einstein-dilaton-p-form system in arbitrary dimensions.

A KK-monopole giant graviton in AdS_5 x Y_5

We construct a new giant graviton solution in AdS_5 x Y_5, with Y_5 a quasi-regular Sasaki-Einstein manifold, consisting on a Kaluza-Klein monopole wrapped around the Y_5 and with its Taub-NUT direction in AdS_5. We find that this configuration has minimal energy when put in the centre of AdS_5, where it behaves as a massless particle. When we take Y_5 to be S^5, we provide a microscopical description in terms of multiple gravitational waves expanding into the fuzzy S^5 defined as an S^1 bundle over the fuzzy CP^2. Finally we provide a possible field theory dual interpretation of the construction.

The baryon vertex with magnetic flux

In this letter we generalise the baryon vertex configuration of AdS/CFT by adding a suitable instantonic magnetic field on its worldvolume, dissolving D-string charge. A careful analysis of the configuration shows that there is an upper bound on the number of dissolved strings. This should be a manifestation of the stringy exclusion principle. We provide a microscopical description of this configuration in terms of a dielectric effect for the dissolved strings.

On the gauge invariance and coordinate transformations of non-Abelian D-brane actions

We study the variations of the worldvolume fields in the non-Abelian action for multiple D-branes. Using T-duality we find that the embedding scalars transform non-trivially under NS-NS gauge transformations as δX ~ [X, X] and prove that the non-Abelian Chern-Simons action is invariant under these transformations. Given that T-duality relates the (part of the) NS-NS transformation with (part of the) general coordinate transformations, we can get some insight in the structure of non-Abelian coordinate transformations.

On the gauge invariance of the non-Abelian Chern-Simons action for D-branes

We present an elegant method to prove the invariance of the Chern-Simons part of the non-Abelian action for N coinciding D-branes under the R-R and NS-NS gauge transformations, by carefully defining what is meant by a background gauge transformation in the non-Abelian world volume action. We study as well the invariance under massive gauge transformations of the massive Type IIA supergravity and show that no massive dielectric couplings are necessary to achieve this invariance.
