Analytic Classes of Metastable de Sitter Vacua

In this paper, we give a systematic procedure for building locally stable dS vacua in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity models motivated by string theory. We assume that one of the superfields has a Kahler potential of no-scale type and impose a hierarchy of supersymmetry breaking conditions. In the no-scale modulus direction the supersymmetry breaking is not small, in all other directions it is of order $ε$. We establish the existence of an abundance of vacua for large regions in the parameter space spanned by $ε$ and the cosmological constant. These regions exist regardless of the details of the other moduli, provided the superpotential can be tuned such that the off-diagonal blocks of the mass matrix are parametrically small. We test and support this general dS landscape construction by explicit analytic solutions for the STU model. The Minkowski limits of these dS vacua either break supersymmetry or have flat directions in agreement with a no-go theorem that we prove, stating that a supersymmetric Minkowski vacuum without flat directions cannot be continuously deformed into a non-supersymmetric vacuum. We also describe a method for finding a broad class of stable supersymmetric Minkowski vacua that can be F-term uplifted to dS vacua and which have an easily controllable SUSY breaking scale.

Phases of non-extremal multi-centered bound states

We investigate the phase space of multi-centered near-extremal configurations previously studied in arXiv:1108.5821 and arXiv:1110.5641 in the probe limit. We confirm that in general the energetically favored ground state of the multi-center potential, which can be a single or multi-center configuration, has the most entropy and is thus thermodynamically stable. However, we find the surprising result that for a subset of configurations, even though a single center black hole seems to be energetically favored, it is entropically not allowed (the resulting black hole would violate cosmic censorship). This disproves classical intuition that everything would just fall into the black hole if energetically favored. Along the way we highlight a shortcoming in the literature regarding the computation of the angular momentum coming from electromagnetic interaction in the probe limit and rectify it. We also demonstrate that static supertubes can exist inside ergoregions where ordinary point particles would be frame dragged.

Non-supersymmetric Microstates of the MSW System

We present an analysis parallel to that of Giusto, Ross, and Saxena (arXiv:0708.3845) and construct a discrete family of non-supersymmetric microstate geometries of the Maldacena-Strominger-Witten system. The supergravity configuration in which we look for the smooth microstates is constructed using SO(4,4) dualities applied to an appropriate seed solution. The SO(4,4) approach offers certain technical advantages. Our microstate solutions are smooth in five dimensions, as opposed to all previously known non-supersymmetric microstates with AdS3 cores, which are smooth only in six dimensions. The decoupled geometries for our microstates are related to global AdS3 x S2 by spectral flows.

BPS domain walls from backreacted orientifolds

Compactifications with D-brane and orientifold sources lead to standard gauged supergravity theories if the sources are smeared over the internal directions. It is therefore of interest to find how the solutions described by the gauged supergravity are altered by properly localising the sources. In this paper we analyse this for BPS domain wall solutions in the seven-dimensional gauged supergravity obtained from an O6 toroidal orientifold compactification in massive IIA supergravity. This is one of the simplest no-scale supergravities that can be constructed and analysed in full detail. We find and discuss the BPS domain walls both when the O6 planes are smeared and localised. When the O6 planes are localised the domain wall solutions live in a warped compactification. In order to get explicit expressions we also consider the non-compact versions of the solutions for which the O6 planes have been traded for D6 branes. Through T-duality we obtain partially localised solutions for compactifications to four dimensions using O3 planes with 3-form fluxes.

Non-extremal Black Hole Microstates: Fuzzballs of Fire or Fuzzballs of Fuzz ?

We construct the first family of microstate geometries of near-extremal black holes, by placing metastable supertubes inside certain scaling supersymmetric smooth microstate geometries. These fuzzballs differ from the classical black hole solution macroscopically at the horizon scale, and for certain probes the fluctuations between various fuzzballs will be visible as thermal noise far away from the horizon. We discuss whether these fuzzballs appear to infalling observers as fuzzballs of fuzz or as fuzzballs of fire. The existence of these solutions suggests that the singularity of non-extremal black holes is resolved all the way to the outer horizon and this "backwards in time" singularity resolution can shed light on the resolution of spacelike cosmological singularities.

Black Holes and Fourfolds

We establish the relation between the structure governing supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric four- and five-dimensional black holes and multicenter solutions and Calabi-Yau flux compactifications of M-theory and type IIB string theory. We find that the known BPS and almost-BPS multicenter black hole solutions can be interpreted as GKP compactifications with (2,1) and (0,3) imaginary self-dual flux. We also show that the most general GKP compactification leads to new classes of BPS and non-BPS multicenter solutions. We explore how these solutions fit into N=2 truncations, and elucidate how supersymmetry becomes camouflaged. As a necessary tool in our exploration we show how the fields in the largest N=2 truncation fit inside the six-torus compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity.

New instability of non-extremal black holes: spitting out supertubes

We search for stable bound states of non-extremal rotating three-charge black holes in five dimensions (Cvetic-Youm black holes) and supertubes. We do this by studying the potential of supertube probes in the non-extremal black hole background and find that generically the marginally bound state of the supersymmetric limit becomes metastable and disappears with non-extremality (higher temperature). However near extremality there is a range of parameters allowing for stable bound states, which have lower energy than the supertube-black hole merger. Angular momentum is crucial for this effect. We use this setup in the D1-D5 decoupling limit to map a thermodynamic instability of the CFT (a new phase which is entropically dominant over the black hole phase) to a tunneling instability of the black hole towards the supertube-black hole bound state. This generalizes the results of ArXiv:1108.0411 [hep-th], which mapped an entropy enigma in the bulk to the dual CFT in a supersymmetric setup.

Fake supersymmetry versus Hamilton-Jacobi

We explain when the first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations for black holes (and domain walls) in (gauged) supergravity, reduce to the usual first-order equations derived from a fake superpotential. This turns out to be equivalent to the vanishing of a newly found constant of motion and we illustrate this with various examples. We show that fake supersymmetry is a necessary condition for having physically sensible extremal black hole solutions. We furthermore observe that small black holes become scaling solutions near the horizon. When combined with fake supersymmetry, this leads to a precise extension of the attractor mechanism to small black holes: The attractor solution is such that the scalars move on specific curves, determined by the black hole charges, that are purely geodesic, although there is a non-zero potential.

Camouflaged Supersymmetry

We establish a relation between certain classes of flux compactifications and certain families of black hole microstate solutions. This connection reveals a rather unexpected result: there exist supersymmetric solutions of N=8 supergravity that live inside many N=2 truncations, but are not supersymmetric inside any of them. If this phenomenon is generic, it indicates the possible existence of much larger families of supersymmetric black rings and black hole microstates than previously thought.

Metastable Supertubes and non-extremal Black Hole Microstates

We study the dynamics of supertubes in smooth bubbling geometries with three charges and three dipole charges that can describe black holes, black rings and their microstates. We find the supertube Hamiltonian in these backgrounds and show that there exist metastable supertube configurations, that can decay into supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric ones via brane-flux annihilation. We also find stable non-supersymmetric configurations. Both the metastable and the stable non-supersymmetric configuration are expected to describe microstate geometries for non-extremal black holes, and we discuss the implication of their existence for the fuzzball proposal.

Hidden Structures of Black Holes

This thesis investigates two main topics concerning black holes in extensions of general relativity inspired by string theory. First, the structure of the equations of motion underlying black hole solutions is considered, in theories of D-dimensional gravity coupled to scalars and vectors. For solutions preserving supersymmetry, the equations of motion have a dramatic simplification: they become first-order instead of the second-order equations one would expect. Recently, it was found that this is a feature some non-supersymmetric black hole solutions exhibit as well. We investigate if this holds more generally, by examining what the conditions are to have first-order equations for the scalar fields of non-supersymmetric black holes, that mimic the form of their supersymmetric counterparts. This is illustrated in examples. Second, the structure of black holes themselves is investigated. String theory has been successful in explaining the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for (mainly supersymmetric) black holes from a microscopic perspective. However, it is not fully established what the interpretation of the corresponding 'microstates' should be in the gravitational description where the black hole picture is valid. There have been recent advances to understand the nature of black hole microstates in the gravity regime, such as the fuzzball proposal. A related idea says that black hole configurations with multiple centers are related to microstates of single-centered black holes. We report on work relating both pictures. As an aside, a relation between violations of causality for certain spacetimes (presence of closed timelike curves in the geometry) and a breakdown of unitarity in the dual conformal field theory is given.

Chronology protection and the stringy exclusion principle

We construct a family of supersymmetric solutions to AdS supergravity in three dimensions, that correspond to type IIB seven branes wrapped on an internal S3xT4. These solutions are generalizations of the three dimensional Goedel universe and have closed timelike curves. We propose an enhancon-like mechanism for excising the closed timelike curve region by including the effects of additional light degrees of freedom. These take the form of tensionless 7-brane probes, effectively described through the backreaction of a smeared domain wall. The absence of closed timelike curves in the asymptotic AdS3 geometries obtained in this way is shown to be equivalent to a unitarity bound in the dual CFT, known as the stringy exclusion principle.

Lectures on Scattering Amplitudes in String Theory

In these lecture notes, we take a closer look at the calculation of scattering amplitudes for the bosonic string. It is believed that string theories form the UV completions of (super)gravity theories. Support for this claim can be found in the (on-shell) scattering amplitudes of strings. On the other hand, studying these string scattering amplitudes opens a window on the UV behavior of the string theories themselves. In these short set of lectures, we discuss the two-dimensional Polyakov path integral for the string, and its gauge symmetries, the connection to Riemann surfaces and how to obtain some of the simplest string scattering amplitudes. We end with some comments on more advanced topics. For simplicity we limit ourselves to bosonic open string theory in 26 dimensions.

Relating chronology protection and unitarity through holography

We give a simple nonsupersymmetric example in which chronology protection follows from unitarity and the AdS/CFT correspondence. We consider a ball of homogeneous, rotating dust in global AdS3 whose backreaction produces a region of Goedel space inside the ball. We solve the Israel matching conditions to find the geometry outside of the dust ball and compute its quantum numbers in the dual CFT. When the radius of the dust ball exceeds a certain critical value, the spacetime will contain closed timelike curves. Our main observation is that precisely when this critical radius is exceeded, a unitarity bound in the dual CFT is violated, leading to a holographic argument for chronology protection.

Godel space from wrapped M2-branes

We show that M-theory admits a supersymmetric compactification to the Godel universe of the form Godel3 x S2 x CY3. We interpret this geometry as coming from the backreaction of M2-branes wrapping the S2 in an AdS3 x S2 x CY3 flux compactification. In the black hole deconstruction proposal similar states give rise to the entropy of a D4-D0 black hole. The system is effectively described by a three-dimensional theory consisting of an axion-dilaton coupled to gravity with a negative cosmological constant. Other embeddings of the three-dimensional theory imply similar supersymmetric Godel compactifications of type IIA/IIB string theory and F-theory.

Black holes, first-order flow equations and geodesics on symmetric spaces

For both extremal and non-extremal spherically symmetric black holes in theories with massless scalars and vectors coupled to gravity, we derive a general form of first-order gradient flow equations, equivalent to the equations of motion. For theories that have a symmetric moduli space after a dimensional reduction over the timelike direction, we discuss the condition for such a gradient flow to exist. This note reviews the results of arXiv:0810.1528 [hep-th].

First-order flow equations for extremal and non-extremal black holes

We derive a general form of first-order flow equations for extremal and non-extremal, static, spherically symmetric black holes in theories with massless scalars and vectors coupled to gravity. By rewriting the action as a sum of squares a la Bogomol'nyi, we identify the function governing the first-order gradient flow, the `generalised superpotential', which reduces to the `fake superpotential' for non-supersymmetric extremal black holes and to the central charge for supersymmetric black holes. For theories whose scalar manifold is a symmetric space after a timelike dimensional reduction, we present the condition for the existence of a generalised superpotential. We provide examples to illustrate the formalism in four and five spacetime dimensions.

5D fuzzball geometries and 4D polar states

We analyze the map between a class of `fuzzball' solutions in five dimensions and four-dimensional multicentered solutions under the 4D-5D connection, and interpret the resulting configurations in the framework of Denef and Moore. In five dimensions, we consider Kaluza-Klein monopole supertubes with circular profile which represent microstates of a small black ring. The resulting four-dimensional configurations are, in a suitable duality frame, polar states consisting of stacks of D6 and anti-D6 branes with flux. We argue that these four-dimensional configurations represent zero-entropy constituents of a 2-centered configuration where one of the centers is a small black hole. We also discuss how spectral flow transformations in five dimensions, leading to configurations with momentum, give rise to four-dimensional D6 anti-D6 polar configurations with different flux distributions at the centers.
