Statistical Properties and Variations of LOS MIMO Channels at Millimeter Wave Frequencies

Measurement results for millimeter wave LOS MIMO systems are presented with a focus on time variation and multipath propagation. Different system setups are used, including 2x2 and 3x3 MIMO, and involving different synchronization procedures and front-ends. Furthermore, different propagation scenarios are evaluated, covering a wide area of applications. The results show that the LOS component carries significantly more power than the NLOS components, and that frequency selectivity from front-ends should be taken into account when designing these high bandwidth systems. Frequency offsets and other phase variations due to transmit and receive oscillator differences are treated as part of the channel and thus, depending on the synchronization setup, the MIMO system exhibits different time variations, particularly in the case of independent local oscillators. It is also observed that these systems experience significant non-trivial long-term variations in terms of amplitude and phase.

Measurement Results for Millimeter Wave pure LOS MIMO Channels

In this paper we present measurement results for pure line-of-sight MIMO links operating in the millimeter wave range. We show that the estimated condition numbers and capacities of the measured channels are in good agreement with the theory for various transmission distances and antenna setups. Furthermore, the results show that orthogonal channel vectors can be observed if the spacing criterion is fulfilled, thus facilitating spatial multiplexing and achieving high spectral efficiencies even over fairly long distances. Spacings generating ill-conditioned channel matrices show on the other hand significantly reduced performance.

Spatial Oversampling in LOS MIMO Systems with 1-Bit Quantization at the Receiver

In this paper we investigate the achievable rate of LOS MIMO systems that use 1-bit quantization and spatial oversampling at the receiver. We propose that by using additional antennas at the receiver, the loss incurred due to the strong limitation of the quantization can be decreased. Mutual information results show that considerable rate gains can be achieved depending on the number and arrangement of the antennas. In some of the cases, even the full available rate from the transmitter can be attained. Furthermore, the results also reveal that two-dimensional antenna arrays can benefit more from spatial oversampling than one-dimensional arrays, when using 1-bit quantization in the LOS MIMO scenario.

Channel Parameter Estimation for LOS MIMO Systems

In this paper we consider the estimation of channel coefficients and frequency offsets for LOS MIMO systems. We propose that by exploiting the structure of the channel matrix, which is present due to the geometrical nature of the channel, the estimation process can be enhanced. If a single oscillator setup is used at transmitter and receiver, respectively, this structure is preserved and can be exploited. Some methods using this fact are discussed and their performance is evaluated with respect to estimation accuracy, revealing that with relatively short training sequences, estimation results close to the fundamental bounds can be achieved.

Performance Evaluation of LOS MIMO Systems under the Influence of Phase Noise

To deal with the ever increasing data rate demand in wireless systems, suitable backhaul solutions have to be found. One option is to use LOS MIMO systems at mmWave frequencies, as high bandwidths and spectral efficiencies will be able to fulfill this requirement. Several investigations have shown, that phase noise can decimate the efficiency of such systems immensely and needs to be adequately dealt with. In this work we investigate the system level performance of LOS MIMO systems subject to this impairment and examine the influence for various practical phase noise values. Furthermore, it is shown how a simple phase noise compensation algorithm can be used to enhance the performance of these systems in different scenarios.

Array Size Reduction for High-Rank LOS MIMO ULAs

In this paper we propose an extended LOS MIMO channel model, which considers an additional phase shifting term in the transmission path, and which provides the potential to improve channel conditioning significantly. We show that this phase shifting can, for example, be achieved by adding a dielectric material between the transmitting and receiving antennas, where the phase shift is dependent on the distance the waves travel in the medium. Using that distance as a design parameter we demonstrate that the optimal spacing between antenna elements of uniform linear arrays, achieving full spatial multiplexing, can be reduced compared with the well-known spacing criterion from previous investigations.
