Frequency regulators for the nonperturbative renormalization group: A general study and the model A as a benchmark

We derive the necessary conditions for implementing a regulator that depends on both momentum and frequency in the nonperturbative renormalization group flow equations of out-of-equilibrium statistical systems. We consider model A as a benchmark and compute its dynamical critical exponent $z$. This allows us to show that frequency regulators compatible with causality and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem can be devised. We show that when the Principle of Minimal Sensitivity (PMS) is employed to optimize the critical exponents $η$, $ν$ and $z$, the use of frequency regulators becomes necessary to make the PMS a self-consistent criterion.

Fully developed isotropic turbulence: nonperturbative renormalization group formalism and fixed point solution

We investigate the regime of fully developed homogeneous and isotropic turbulence of the Navier-Stokes (NS) equation in the presence of a stochastic forcing, using the nonperturbative (functional) renormalization group (NPRG). Within a simple approximation based on symmetries, we obtain the fixed point solution of the NPRG flow equations that corresponds to fully developed turbulence both in $d=2$ and $d=3$ dimensions. Deviations to the dimensional scalings (Kolmogorov in $d=3$ or Kraichnan-Batchelor in $d=2$) are found for the two-point functions. To further analyze these deviations, we derive exact flow equations in the large wave-number limit, and show that the fixed point does not entail the usual scale invariance, thereby identifying the mechanism for the emergence of intermittency within the NPRG framework. The purpose of this work is to provide a detailed basis for NPRG studies of NS turbulence, the determination of the ensuing intermittency exponents is left for future work.

The Local Potential Approach to frustrated antiferromagnets

We revisit the critical behavior of classical frustrated systems using the nonperturbative renormalization group (NPRG) equation. Our study is performed within the local potential approximation of this equation to which is added the flow of the field renormalization. Our flow equations are functional to avoid possible artifacts coming from field expansions which consists in keeping only a limited number of coupling constants. We present a simple numerical method to follow the fixed point solution of our equations by changing gradually the dimension d and the number N of spin-components. We explain in details the advantage of this method as well as the numerical difficulties we encounter, which become severe close to d = 2. The function N_c(d) separating the regions of first and second order in the (d,N) plane is computed for d between 4 and 2.2. Our results confirm what was previously found within cruder approximation of the NPRG equation and contradict both the fixed dimension perturbative approach and the results obtained within the conformal bootstrap approach.

Scale invariance implies conformal invariance for the three-dimensional Ising model

Using Wilson renormalization group, we show that if no integrated vector operator of scaling dimension $-1$ exists, then scale invariance implies conformal invariance. By using the Lebowitz inequalities, we prove that this necessary condition is fulfilled in all dimensions for the Ising universality class. This shows, in particular, that scale invariance implies conformal invariance for the three-dimensional Ising model.

Critical exponents can be different on the two sides of a transition: A generic mechanism

We present models where $γ_+$ and $γ_-$, the exponents of the susceptibility in the high and low temperature phases, are generically different. In these models, continuous symmetries are explicitly broken down by discrete anisotropies that are irrelevant in the renormalization-group sense. The $\mathbb{Z}_q$-invariant models are the simplest examples for two-component order parameters ($N=2$) and the icosahedral symmetry for $N=3$. We compute accurately $γ_+ -γ_-$ as well as the ratio $ν/ν'$ of the exponents of the two correlation lengths present for $T<T_c$.

Fully developed isotropic turbulence: symmetries and exact identities

We consider the regime of fully developed isotropic and homogeneous turbulence of the Navier-Stokes equation with a stochastic forcing. We present two gauge symmetries of the corresponding Navier-Stokes field theory, and derive the associated general Ward identities. Furthermore, by introducing a local source bilinear in the velocity field, we show that these symmetries entail an infinite set of exact and local relations between correlation functions. They include in particular the Kármán-Howarth relation and another exact relation for a pressure-velocity correlation function recently derived in Ref. [G. Falkovich, I. Fouxon, Y. Oz,J. Fluid Mech. 644, 465 (2010)], that we further generalize.

The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with spatially correlated noise: a unified picture from nonperturbative renormalization group

We investigate the scaling regimes of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in the presence of spatially correlated noise with power law decay $D(p) \sim p^{-2ρ}$ in Fourier space, using a nonperturbative renormalization group approach. We determine the full phase diagram of the system as a function of $ρ$ and the dimension $d$. In addition to the weak-coupling part of the diagram, which agrees with the results from Refs. [Europhys. Lett. 47, 14 (1999), Eur. Phys. J. B 9, 491 (1999)], we find the two fixed points describing the short-range (SR) and long-range (LR) dominated strong-coupling phases. In contrast with a suggestion in the references cited above, we show that, for all values of $ρ$, there exists a unique strong-coupling SR fixed point that can be continuously followed as a function of $d$. We show in particular that the existence and the behavior of the LR fixed point do not provide any hint for 4 being the upper critical dimension of the KPZ equation with SR noise.

Finite scale singularity in the renormalization group flow of a reaction-diffusion system

We study the nonequilibrium critical behavior of the pair contact process with diffusion (PCPD) by means of nonperturbative functional renormalization group techniques. We show that usual perturbation theory fails because the effective potential develops a nonanalyticity at a finite length scale: Perturbatively forbidden terms are dynamically generated and the flow can be continued once they are taken into account. Our results suggest that the critical behavior of PCPD can be either in the directed percolation or in a new (conjugated) universality class.

Non-perturbative renormalisation group for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation: general framework and first applications

We present an analytical method, rooted in the non-perturbative renormalization group, that allows one to calculate the critical exponents and the correlation and response functions of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) growth equation in all its different regimes, including the strong-coupling one. We analyze the symmetries of the KPZ problem and derive an approximation scheme that satisfies the linearly realized ones. We implement this scheme at the minimal order in the response field, and show that it yields a complete, qualitatively correct phase diagram in all dimensions, with reasonable values for the critical exponents in physical dimensions. We also compute in one dimension the full (momentum and frequency dependent) correlation function, and the associated universal scaling functions. We find an excellent quantitative agreement with the exact results from Praehofer and Spohn (J. Stat. Phys. 115 (2004)). We emphasize that all these results, which can be systematically improved, are obtained with sole input the bare action and its symmetries, without further assumptions on the existence of scaling or on the form of the scaling function.

General framework of the non-perturbative renormalization group for non-equilibrium steady states

This paper is devoted to presenting in detail the non-perturbative renormalization group (NPRG) formalism to investigate out-of-equilibrium systems and critical dynamics in statistical physics. The general NPRG framework for studying non-equilibrium steady states in stochastic models is expounded and fundamental technicalities are stressed, mainly regarding the role of causality and of Ito's discretization. We analyze the consequences of Ito's prescription in the NPRG framework and eventually provide an adequate regularization to encode them automatically. Besides, we show how to build a supersymmetric NPRG formalism with emphasis on time-reversal symmetric problems, whose supersymmetric structure allows for a particularly simple implementation of NPRG in which causality issues are transparent. We illustrate the two approaches on the example of Model A within the derivative expansion approximation at order two, and check that they yield identical results.

Non-perturbative renormalization group for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation

We present a simple approximation of the non-perturbative renormalization group designed for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation and show that it yields the correct phase diagram, including the strong-coupling phase with reasonable scaling exponent values in physical dimensions. We find indications of a possible qualitative change of behavior around $d=4$. We discuss how our approach can be systematically improved.

An Introduction to the Nonperturbative Renormalization Group

An elementary introduction to the non-perturbative renormalization group is presented mainly in the context of statistical mechanics. No prior knowledge of field theory is necessary. The aim is this article is not to give an extensive overview of the subject but rather to insist on conceptual aspects and to explain in detail the main technical steps. It should be taken as an introduction to more advanced readings.

Non Perturbative Renormalization Group study of reaction-diffusion processes and directed percolation

We investigate non-equilibrium critical phenomena using a nonperturbative renormalization group method. Reaction-diffusion processes are described by a scale dependent effective action which evolution is governed by very generic flow equations, that are derived. They allow to recover the critical exponents of directed percolation, and moreover to calculate the microscopic reaction rates which give rise to a phase transition in the case of branching and annihilating random walks with odd number of offsprings, even in three dimensions.

On the criticality of frustrated spin systems with noncollinear order

We analyze the universal features of the critical behaviour of frustrated spin systems with noncollinear order. By means of the field theoretical renormalization group approach, we study the 3d model of a frustrated magnet and obtain pseudo-epsilon expansions for its universal order parameter marginal dimensions. These dimensions govern accessibility of the renormalization group transformation fixed points, and, hence, define the scenario of the phase transition.

Spin-stiffness and topological defects in two-dimensional frustrated spin systems

Using a {\it collective} Monte Carlo algorithm we study the low-temperature and long-distance properties of two systems of two-dimensional classical tops. Both systems have the same spin-wave dynamics (low-temperature behavior) as a large class of Heisenberg frustrated spin systems. They are constructed so that to differ only by their topological properties. The spin-stiffnesses for the two systems of tops are calculated for different temperatures and different sizes of the sample. This allows to investigate the role of topological defects in frustrated spin systems. Comparisons with Renormalization Group results based on a Non Linear Sigma model approach and with the predictions of some simple phenomenological model taking into account the topological excitations are done.

Self - organized - criticality and synchronization in pulse coupled relaxation oscillator systems: the Olami, Feder and Christensen model and the Feder and Feder model

We reexamine the dynamics of the Olami, Feder and Christensen (OFC) model. We show that, depending on the dissipation, it exhibits two different behaviors and that it can or cannot show self - organized - criticality (SOC) and/or synchronization. We also show that while the Feder and Feder model perturbed by a stochastic noise is SOC and has the same exponent for the distribution of avalanche sizes as the OFC model, it does not show synchronization. We conclude that a relaxation oscillator system can be synchronized and/or SOC and that therefore synchronization is not necessary for criticality in these models.

Monte Carlo Calculation of the Spin-Stiffness of the Two-Dimensional Heisenberg Model

Using a collective-mode Monte Carlo method (the Wolff-Swendsen-Wang algorithm), we compute the spin-stiffness of the two-dimensional classical Heisenberg model. We show that it is the relevant physical quantity to investigate the behaviour of the model in the very low temperature range inaccessible to previous studies based on correlation length and susceptibility calculations.
