The Geometry of integrable systems. Tau functions and homology of Spectral curves. Perturbative definition

In this series of lectures, we (re)view the "geometric method" that reconstructs, from a geometric object: the "spectral curve", an integrable system, and in particular its Tau function, Baker-Akhiezer functions and "current amplitudes", all having an interpretation as CFT conformal blocks. The construction identifies Hamiltonians with cycles on the curve, and times with periods (integrals of forms over cycles). All the integrable structure is formulated in terms of homology of contours, the phase space is a space of cycles where the symplectic form is the intersection, the Hirota operator is a degree 2 second-kind cycle, a Sato shift is an addition of a 3rd kind cycle, the Hirota equations amount to saying that merging 3rd kind cycles (monopoles) yields a 2nd kind cycle (dipole). The lecture is divided into 3 parts: 1) classical case, perturbative: the spectral curve is a ramified cover of a base Riemann surface -- with some additional structure -- and the integrable system is defined as a formal power series of a small "dispersion" parameter $ε$. 2) dispersive classical case, non perturbative: the spectral curve is defined not as a ramified cover (which would be a bundle with discrete fiber), but as a vector bundle -- whose dispersionless limit consists in chosing a finite set of vectors in each fiber. 3) non-commutative case, and perturbative. The spectral curve is here a "non-commutative" surface, whose geometry will be defined in lecture III. 4) the full non-commutative dispersionless theory is under development is not presented in these lectures.

Large genus behavior of topological recursion

We show that for a rather generic set of regular spectral curves, the Topological-Recursion invariants F_g grow at most like $O((βg)! r^{-g}) $ with some $r>0$ and $β\leq 5$.

Integrability of $\mathcal W({\mathfrak{sl}_d})$-symmetric Toda conformal field theories I : Quantum geometry

In this article which is the first of a series of three, we consider $\mathcal W({\mathfrak{sl}_d})$-symmetric conformal field theory in topological regimes for a generic value of the background charge, where $\mathcal W({\mathfrak{sl}_d})$ is the W-algebra associated to the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_d}$, whose vertex operator algebra is included to that of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak g}_1$ at level 1. In such regimes, the theory admits a free field representation. We show that the generalized Ward identities assumed to be satisfied by chiral conformal blocks with current insertions can be solved perturbatively in topological regimes. This resolution uses a generalization of the topological recursion to non-commutative, or quantum, spectral curves. In turn, special geometry arguments yields a conjecture for the perturbative reconstruction of a particular chiral block.

Local properties of the random Delaunay triangulation model and topological 2D gravity

Delaunay triangulations provide a bijection between a set of $N+3$ points in the complex plane, and the set of triangulations with given circumcircle intersection angles. The uniform Lebesgue measure on these angles translates into a Kähler measure for Delaunay triangulations, or equivalently on the moduli space $\mathcal M_{0,N+3}$ of genus zero Riemann surfaces with $N+3$ marked points. We study the properties of this measure. First we relate it to the topological Weil-Petersson symplectic form on the moduli space $\mathcal M_{0,N+3}$. Then we show that this measure, properly extended to the space of all triangulations on the plane, has maximality properties for Delaunay triangulations. Finally we show, using new local inequalities on the measures, that the volume $\mathcal{V}_N$ on triangulations with $N+3$ points is monotonically increasing when a point is added, $N\to N+1$. We expect that this can be a step towards seeing that the large $N$ limit of random triangulations can tend to the Liouville conformal field theory.

The geometry of Casimir W-algebras

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a simply laced Lie algebra, $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}_1$ the corresponding affine Lie algebra at level one, and $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{g})$ the corresponding Casimir W-algebra. We consider $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{g})$-symmetric conformal field theory on the Riemann sphere. To a number of $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{g})$-primary fields, we associate a Fuchsian differential system. We compute correlation functions of $\widehat{\mathfrak{g}}_1$-currents in terms of solutions of that system, and construct the bundle where these objects live. We argue that cycles on that bundle correspond to parameters of the conformal blocks of the W-algebra, equivalently to moduli of the Fuchsian system.

Lectures notes on compact Riemann surfaces

This is an introduction to the geometry of compact Riemann surfaces, largely following the books Farkas-Kra, Fay, Mumford Tata lectures. 1) Defining Riemann surfaces with atlases of charts, and as locus of solutions of algebraic equations. 2) Space of meromorphic functions and forms, we classify them with the Newton polygon. 3) Abel map, the Jacobian and Theta functions. 4) The Riemann--Roch theorem that computes the dimension of spaces of functions and forms with given orders of poles and zeros. 5) The moduli space of Riemann surfaces, with its combinatorial representation as Strebel graphs, and also with the uniformization theorem that maps Riemann surfaces to hyperbolic surfaces. 6) An application of Riemann surfaces to integrable systems, more precisely finding sections of an eigenvector bundle over a Riemann surface, which is known as the "algebraic reconstruction" method in integrable systems, and we mention how it is related to Baker-Akhiezer functions and Tau functions.

Large Strebel graphs and $(3,2)$ Liouville CFT

2D quantum gravity is the idea that a set of discretized surfaces (called map, a graph on a surface), equipped with a graph measure, converges in the large size limit (large number of faces) to a conformal field theory (CFT), and in the simplest case to the simplest CFT known as pure gravity, also known as the gravity dressed (3,2) minimal model. Here we consider the set of planar Strebel graphs (planar trivalent metric graphs) with fixed perimeter faces, with the measure product of Lebesgue measure of all edge lengths, submitted to the perimeter constraints. We prove that expectation values of a large class of observables indeed converge towards the CFT amplitudes of the (3,2) minimal model.

Reconstructing WKB from topological recursion

We prove that the topological recursion reconstructs the WKB expansion of a quantum curve for all spectral curves whose Newton polygons have no interior point (and that are smooth as affine curves). This includes nearly all previously known cases in the literature, and many more; in particular, it includes many quantum curves of order greater than two. We also explore the connection between the choice of ordering in the quantization of the spectral curve and the choice of integration divisor to reconstruct the WKB expansion.

Integrable differential systems of topological type and reconstruction by the topological recursion

Starting from a $d\times d$ rational Lax pair system of the form $\hbar \partial_x Ψ= LΨ$ and $\hbar \partial_t Ψ=RΨ$ we prove that, under certain assumptions (genus $0$ spectral curve and additional conditions on $R$ and $L$), the system satisfies the "topological type property". A consequence is that the formal $\hbar$-WKB expansion of its determinantal correlators, satisfy the topological recursion. This applies in particular to all $(p,q)$ minimal models reductions of the KP hierarchy, or to the six Painlevé systems.

Towards U(N|M) knot invariant from ABJM theory

We study U(N|M) character expectation value with the supermatrix Chern-Simons theory, known as the ABJM matrix model, with emphasis on its connection to the knot invariant. This average just gives the half BPS circular Wilson loop expectation value in ABJM theory, which shall correspond to the unknot invariant. We derive the determinantal formula, which gives U(N|M) character expectation values in terms of U(1|1) averages for a particular type of character representations. This means that the U(1|1) character expectation value is a building block for all the U(N|M) averages, and in particular, by an appropriate limit, for the U(N) invariants. In addition to the original model, we introduce another supermatrix model obtained through the symplectic transform, which is motivated by the torus knot Chern-Simons matrix model. We obtain the Rosso-Jones-type formula and the spectral curve for this case.

Loop equations from differential systems

To any differential system $dΨ=ΦΨ$ where $Ψ$ belongs to a Lie group (a fiber of a principal bundle) and $Φ$ is a Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ valued 1-form on a Riemann surface $Σ$, is associated an infinite sequence of "correlators" $W_n$ that are symmetric $n$-forms on $Σ^n$. The goal of this article is to prove that these correlators always satisfy "loop equations", the same equations satisfied by correlation functions in random matrix models, or the same equations as Virasoro or W-algebra constraints in CFT.

Lax matrix solution of c=1 Conformal Field Theory

To a correlation function in a two-dimensional conformal field theory with the central charge $c=1$, we associate a matrix differential equation $Ψ' = L Ψ$, where the Lax matrix $L$ is a matrix square root of the energy-momentum tensor. Then local conformal symmetry implies that the differential equation is isomonodromic. This provides a justification for the recently observed relation between four-point conformal blocks and solutions of the Painlevé VI equation. This also provides a direct way to compute the three-point function of Runkel-Watts theory -- the common $c\rightarrow 1$ limit of Minimal Models and Liouville theory.

An analysis of the intermediate field theory of $T^4$ tensor model

In this paper we analyze the multi-matrix model arising from the intermediate field representation of the tensor model with all quartic melonic interactions. We derive the saddle point equation and the Schwinger-Dyson constraints. We then use them to describe the leading and next-to-leading eigenvalues distribution of the matrices.

The sine-law gap probability, Painlevé 5, and asymptotic expansion by the topological recursion

The goal of this article is to rederive the connection between the Painlevé $5$ integrable system and the universal eigenvalues correlation functions of double-scaled hermitian matrix models, through the topological recursion method. More specifically we prove, \textbf{to all orders}, that the WKB asymptotic expansions of the $τ$-function as well as of determinantal formulas arising from the Painlevé $5$ Lax pair are identical to the large $N$ double scaling asymptotic expansions of the partition function and correlation functions of any hermitian matrix model around a regular point in the bulk. In other words, we rederive the "sine-law" universal bulk asymptotic of large random matrices and provide an alternative perturbative proof of universality in the bulk with only algebraic methods. Eventually we exhibit the first orders of the series expansion up to $O(N^{-5})$.

Root systems, spectral curves, and analysis of a Chern-Simons matrix model for Seifert fibered spaces

We study a class of scalar, linear, non-local Riemann-Hilbert problems (RHP) involving finite subgroups of PSL(2,C). We associate to such problems a (maybe infinite) root system and describe the relevance of the orbits of the Weyl group in the construction of its solutions. As an application, we study in detail the large N expansion of SU(N) or SO(N) or Sp(2N) Chern-Simons partition function Z_N(M) of 3-manifolds M that are either rational homology spheres or more generally Seifert fibered spaces. It has a matrix model-like representation, whose spectral curve can be characterized in terms of a RHP as above. When pi_1(M) is finite (i.e. for manifolds M that are quotients of \mathbb{S}_{3} by a finite isometry group of type ADE), the Weyl group associated to the RHP is finite and the spectral curve is algebraic and can be in principle computed. We then show that the large $N$ expansion of Z_N(M) is computed by the topological recursion. This has consequences for the analyticity properties of SU/SO/Sp perturbative invariants of knots along fibers in $M$.

Planar maps, circle patterns and 2d gravity

Via circle pattern techniques, random planar triangulations (with angle variables) are mapped onto Delaunay triangulations in the complex plane. The uniform measure on triangulations is mapped onto a conformally invariant spatial point process. We show that this measure can be expressed as: (1) a sum over 3-spanning-trees partitions of the edges of the Delaunay triangulations; (2) the volume form of a Kähler metric over the space of Delaunay triangulations, whose prepotential has a simple formulation in term of ideal tessellations of the 3d hyperbolic space; (3) a discretized version (involving finite difference complex derivative operators) of Polyakov's conformal Fadeev-Popov determinant in 2d gravity; (4) a combination of Chern classes, thus also establishing a link with topological 2d gravity.

Rational differential systems, loop equations, and application to the q-th reductions of KP

To any solution of a linear system of differential equations, we associate a kernel, correlators satisfying a set of loop equations, and in presence of isomonodromic parameters, a Tau function. We then study their semiclassical expansion (WKB type expansion in powers of the weight hbar per derivative) of these quantities. When this expansion is of topological type (TT), the coefficients of expansions are computed by the topological recursion with initial data given by the semiclassical spectral curve of the linear system. This provides an efficient algorithm to compute them at least when the semiclassical spectral curve is of genus 0. TT is a non trivial property, and it is an open problem to find a criterion which guarantees it is satisfied. We prove TT and illustrate our construction for the linear systems associated to the q-th reductions of KP - which contain the (p,q) models as a specialization.

Abstract loop equations, topological recursion, and applications

We formulate a notion of abstract loop equations, and show that their solution is provided by a topological recursion under some assumptions, in particular the result takes a universal form. The Schwinger-Dyson equation of the one and two hermitian matrix models, and of the O(n) model appear as special cases. We study applications to repulsive particles systems, and explain how our notion of loop equations are related to Virasoro constraints. Then, as a special case, we study in detail applications to enumeration problems in a general class of non-intersecting loop models on the random lattice of all topologies, to SU(N) Chern-Simons invariants of torus knots in the large N expansion. We also mention an application to Liouville theory on surfaces of positive genus.
