Topological expansion of the chain of matrices

We solve the loop equations to all orders in $1/N^2$, for the Chain of Matrices matrix model (with possibly an external field coupled to the last matrix of the chain). We show that the topological expansion of the free energy, is, like for the 1 and 2-matrix model, given by the symplectic invariants of the associated spectral curve. As a consequence, we find the double scaling limit explicitly, and we discuss modular properties, large $N$ asymptotics. We also briefly discuss the limit of an infinite chain of matrices (matrix quantum mechanics).

Determinantal formulae and loop equations

We prove that the correlations functions, generated by the determinantal process of the Christoffel-Darboux kernel of an arbitrary order 2 ODE, do satisfy loop equations.

Algebraic methods in random matrices and enumerative geometry

We review the method of symplectic invariants recently introduced to solve matrix models loop equations, and further extended beyond the context of matrix models. For any given spectral curve, one defined a sequence of differential forms, and a sequence of complex numbers Fg . We recall the definition of the invariants Fg, and we explain their main properties, in particular symplectic invariance, integrability, modularity,... Then, we give several example of applications, in particular matrix models, enumeration of discrete surfaces (maps), algebraic geometry and topological strings, non-intersecting brownian motions,...

Topological expansion of the Bethe ansatz, and non-commutative algebraic geometry

In this article, we define a non-commutative deformation of the "symplectic invariants" of an algebraic hyperelliptical plane curve. The necessary condition for our definition to make sense is a Bethe ansatz. The commutative limit reduces to the symplectic invariants, i.e. algebraic geometry, and thus we define non-commutative deformations of some algebraic geometry quantities. In particular our non-commutative Bergmann kernel satisfies a Rauch variational formula. Those non-commutative invariants are inspired from the large N expansion of formal non-hermitian matrix models. Thus they are expected to be related to the enumeration problem of discrete non-orientable surfaces of arbitrary topologies.

Some properties of angular integrals

We find new representations for Itzykson-Zuber like angular integrals for arbitrary beta, in particular for the orthogonal group O(n), the unitary group U(n) and the symplectic group Sp(2n). We rewrite the Haar measure integral, as a flat Lebesge measure integral, and we deduce some recursion formula on n. The same methods gives also the Shatashvili's type moments. Finally we prove that, in agreement with Brezin and Hikami's observation, the angular integrals are linear combinations of exponentials whose coefficients are polynomials in the reduced variables (x_i-x_j)(y_i-y_j).

All orders asymptotic expansion of large partitions

The generating function which counts partitions with the Plancherel measure (and its q-deformed version), can be rewritten as a matrix integral, which allows to compute its asymptotic expansion to all orders. There are applications in statistical physics of growing/melting crystals, T.A.S.E.P., and also in algebraic geometry. In particular we compute the Gromov-Witten invariants of the X_p Calabi-Yau 3-fold, and we prove a conjecture of M. Marino, that the generating functions F_g of Gromov--Witten invariants of X_p, come from a matrix model, and are the symplectic invariants of the mirror spectral curve.

Large N expansion of convergent matrix integrals, holomorphic anomalies, and background independence

We propose an asymptotic expansion formula for matrix integrals, including oscillatory terms (derivatives of theta-functions) to all orders. This formula is heuristically derived from the analogy between matrix integrals, and formal matrix models (combinatorics of discrete surfaces), after summing over filling fractions. The whole oscillatory series can also be resummed into a single theta function. We also remark that the coefficients of the theta derivatives, are the same as those which appear in holomorphic anomaly equations in string theory, i.e. they are related to degeneracies of Riemann surfaces. Moreover, the expansion presented here, happens to be independent of the choice of a background filling fraction.

Topological expansion and boundary conditions

In this article, we compute the topological expansion of all possible mixed-traces in a hermitian two matrix model. In other words we give a recipe to compute the number of discrete surfaces of given genus, carrying an Ising model, and with all possible given boundary conditions. The method is recursive, and amounts to recursively cutting surfaces along interfaces. The result is best represented in a diagrammatic way, and is thus rather simple to use.

Holomorphic anomaly and matrix models

The genus g free energies of matrix models can be promoted to modular invariant, non-holomorphic amplitudes which only depend on the geometry of the classical spectral curve. We show that these non-holomorphic amplitudes satisfy the holomorphic anomaly equations of Bershadsky, Cecotti, Ooguri and Vafa. We derive as well holomorphic anomaly equations for the open string sector. These results provide evidence at all genera for the Dijkgraaf--Vafa conjecture relating matrix models to type B topological strings on certain local Calabi--Yau threefolds.

Recursion between Mumford volumes of moduli spaces

We propose a new proof, as well as a generalization of Mirzakhani's recursion for volumes of moduli spaces. We interpret those recursion relations in terms of expectation values in Kontsevich's integral, i.e. we relate them to a Ribbon graph decomposition of Riemann surfaces. We find a generalization of Mirzakhani's recursions to measures containing all higher Mumford's kappa classes, and not only kappa1 as in the Weil-Petersson case.

Weil-Petersson volume of moduli spaces, Mirzakhani's recursion and matrix models

We show that Mirzakhani's recursions for the volumes of moduli space of Riemann surfaces are a special case of random matrix loop equations, and therefore we confirm again that Kontsevitch's integral is a generating function for those volumes. As an application, we propose a formula for the Weil-Petersson volume Vol(M_{g,0}).

Invariants of algebraic curves and topological expansion

For any arbitrary algebraic curve, we define an infinite sequence of invariants. We study their properties, in particular their variation under a variation of the curve, and their modular properties. We also study their limits when the curve becomes singular. In addition we find that they can be used to define a formal series, which satisfies formally an Hirota equation, and we thus obtain a new way of constructing a tau function attached to an algebraic curve. These invariants are constructed in order to coincide with the topological expansion of a matrix formal integral, when the algebraic curve is chosen as the large N limit of the matrix model's spectral curve. Surprisingly, we find that the same invariants also give the topological expansion of other models, in particular the matrix model with an external field, and the so-called double scaling limit of matrix models, i.e. the (p,q) minimal models of conformal field theory. As an example to illustrate the efficiency of our method, we apply it to the Kontsevitch integral, and we give a new and extremely easy proof that Kontsevitch integral depends only on odd times, and that it is a KdV tau-function.

Formal matrix integrals and combinatorics of maps

This article is a short review on the relationship between convergent matrix integrals, formal matrix integrals, and combinatorics of maps. We briefly summarize results developed over the last 30 years, as well as more recent discoveries. We recall that formal matrix integrals are identical to combinatorial generating functions for maps, and that formal matrix integrals are in general very different from convergent matrix integrals. Finally, we give a list of the classical matrix models which have played an important role in physics in the past decades. Some of them are now well understood, some are still difficult challenges.

Universal distribution of random matrix eigenvalues near the "birth of a cut" transition

We study the eigenvalue distribution of a random matrix, at a transition where a new connected component of the eigenvalue density support appears away from other connected components. Unlike previously studied critical points, which correspond to rational singularities ρ(x)\sim x^{p/q} classified by conformal minimal models and integrable hierarchies, this transition shows logarithmic and non-analytical behaviours. There is no critical exponent, instead, the power of N changes in a saw teeth behaviour.

Mixed correlation function and spectral curve for the 2-matrix model

We compute the mixed correlation function in a way which involves only the orthogonal polynomials with degrees close to $n$, (in some sense like the Christoffel Darboux theorem for non-mixed correlation functions). We also derive new representations for the differential systems satisfied by the biorthogonal polynomials, and we find new formulae for the spectral curve. In particular we prove the conjecture of M. Bertola, claiming that the spectral curve is the same curve which appears in the loop equations.

Matrix eigenvalue model: Feynman graph technique for all genera

We present the diagrammatic technique for calculating the free energy of the matrix eigenvalue model (the model with arbitrary power $β$ by the Vandermonde determinant) to all orders of 1/N expansion in the case where the limiting eigenvalue distribution spans arbitrary (but fixed) number of disjoint intervals (curves).

Free energy topological expansion for the 2-matrix model

We compute the complete topological expansion of the formal hermitian two-matrix model. For this, we refine the previously formulated diagrammatic rules for computing the 1/ N expansion of the nonmixed correlation functions and give a new formulation of the spectral curve. We extend these rules obtaining a closed formula for correlation functions in all orders of topological expansion. We then integrate it to obtain the free energy in terms of residues on the associated Riemann surface.
