Detection of cosmic superstrings by geodesic test particle motion

(p,q)-strings are bound states of p F-strings and q D-strings and are predicted to form at the end of brane inflation. As such these cosmic superstrings should be detectable in the universe. In this paper we argue that they can be detected by the way that massive and massless test particles move in the space-time of these cosmic superstrings, in particular we study solutions to the geodesic equation in the space-time of field theoretical (p,q)-strings. The geodesics can be classified according to the test particle's energy, angular momentum and momentum in the direction of the string axis. We discuss how the change of the magnetic fluxes, the ratio between the symmetry breaking scale and the Planck mass, the Higgs to gauge boson mass ratios and the binding between the F- and D-strings, respectively, influence the motion of the test particles. While massless test particles can only move on escape orbits, a new feature as compared to the infinitely thin string limit is the existence of bound orbits for massive test particles. In particular, we observe that - in contrast to the space-time of a single Abelian-Higgs string - bound orbits for massive test particles in (p,q)-string space-times are possible if the Higgs boson mass is larger than the gauge boson mass. We also compute the effect of the binding between the p- and the q-string on observables such as the light deflection and the perihelion shift. While light deflection can also be caused by other matter distributions, the possibility of a negative perihelion shift seems to be a feature of finite width cosmic strings that could lead to the unmistakable identification of such objects. In Melvin space-times, which are asymptotically non-conical, massive test particles have to move on bound orbits, while massless test particles can only escape to infinity if their angular momentum vanishes.

Holographic superfluids as duals of rotating black strings

We study the breaking of an Abelian symmetry close to the horizon of an uncharged rotating Anti-de Sitter black string in 3+1 dimensions. The boundary theory living on R^2 x S^1 has no rotation, but a magnetic field that is aligned with the axis of the black string. This boundary theory decribes non-rotating (2+1)-dimensional holographic superfluids with non-vanishing superfluid velocity. We study these superfluids in the grand canonical ensemble and show that for sufficiently small angular momentum of the dual black string and sufficiently small superfluid velocity the phase transition is 2nd order, while it becomes 1st order for larger superfluid velocity. Moreover, we observe that the phase transition is always 1st order above a critical value of the angular momentum independent of the choice of the superfluid velocity.

Rotating Boson Stars in 5 Dimensions

We study rotating boson stars in five spacetime dimensions. The boson fields consist of a complex doublet scalar field. Considering boson stars rotating in two orthogonal planes with both angular momenta of equal magnitude, a special ansatz for the boson field and the metric allows for solutions with nontrivial dependence on the radial coordinate only. The charge of the scalar field equals the sum of the angular momenta. The rotating boson stars are globally regular and asymptotically flat. For our choice of a sixtic potential the rotating boson star solutions possess a flat spacetime limit. We study the solutions in flat and curved spacetime.

Geodesic motion in the space-time of a cosmic string

We study the geodesic equation in the space-time of an Abelian-Higgs string and discuss the motion of massless and massive test particles. The geodesics can be classified according to the particles energy, angular momentum and linear momentum along the string axis. We observe that bound orbits of massive particles are only possible if the Higgs boson mass is smaller than the gauge boson mass, while massless particles always move on escape orbits. Moreover, neither massive nor massless particles can ever reach the string axis for non-vanishing angular momentum. We also discuss the dependence of light deflection by a cosmic string as well as the perihelion shift of bound orbits of massive particles on the ratio between Higgs and gauge boson mass and the ratio between symmetry breaking scale and Planck mass, respectively.

Test particle motion in the space-time of a Kerr black hole pierced by a cosmic string

We study the geodesic equation in the space-time of a Kerr black hole pierced by an infinitely thin cosmic string and give the complete set of analytical solutions of this equation for massive and massless particles in terms of Mino time that allows to decouple the r- and theta-component of the geodesic equation. The solutions of the geodesic equation can be classified according to the particle's energy and angular momentum, the mass and angular momentum per mass of the black hole. We give examples of orbits showing the influence of the cosmic string. We also discuss the perihelion shift and the Lense-Thirring effect for bound orbits and show that the presence of a cosmic string enhances both effects. Comparing our results with experimental data from the LAGEOS satellites we find an upper bound on the energy per unit length of a string piercing the earth which is approximately 10^{16} kg/m. Our work has also applications to the recently suggested explanation of the alignment of the polarization vector of quasars using remnants of cosmic string decay in the form of primordial magnetic field loops.

Holographic Superconductors in 3+1 dimensions away from the probe limit

We study holographic superconductors in 3+1 dimensions away from the probe limit, i.e. taking back-reaction of the space-time into account. We consider the case of pure Einstein- and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, respectively. Similar to the probe limit we observe that the critical temperature at which condensation sets in decreases with increasing Gauss-Bonnet coupling. The decrease is however stronger when taking back-reaction of the space-time into account. We observe that the critical temperature becomes very small, but stays positive for all values of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling no matter how strong the back-reaction of the space-time is.

The complete set of solutions of the geodesic equations in the space-time of a Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a cosmic string

We study the geodesic equations in the space-time of a Schwarzschild black hole pierced by an infinitely thin cosmic string and give the complete set of analytical solutions of these equations for massive and massless particles, respectively. The solutions of the geodesic equations can be classified according to the particle's energy and angular momentum, the ratio between the component of the angular momentum aligned with the axis of the string and the total angular momentum, the deficit angle of the space-time and as well the horizon radius (or mass) of the black hole. For bound orbits of massive test particles we calculate the perihelion shift, we discuss light deflection and comment on the Newtonian limit.

Gravitating Semilocal strings

We discuss the properties of semilocal strings minimally coupled to gravity. Semilocal strings are solutions of the bosonic sector of the Standard Model in the limit $\sin^2θ_W=1$ (where $θ_W$ is the Weinberg angle) and correspond to embedded Abelian-Higgs strings for a particular choice of the scalar doublet. We focus on the limit where the gauge boson mass is equal to the Higgs boson mass such that the solutions fulfill the Bogomolnyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) bound.

The effect of dark strings on semilocal strings

Dark strings have recently been suggested to exist in new models of dark matter that explain the excessive electronic production in the galaxy. We study the interaction of these dark strings with semilocal strings which are solutions of the bosonic sector of the Standard Model in the limit $\sin^2θ_{\rm w}=1$, where $θ_{\rm w}$ is the Weinberg angle. While embedded Abelian-Higgs strings exist for generic values of the coupling constants, we show that semilocal solutions with non-vanishing condensate inside the string core exist only above a critical value of the Higgs to gauge boson mass ratio when interacting with dark strings. Above this critical value, which is greater than unity, the energy per unit length of the semilocal-dark string solutions is always smaller than that of the embedded Abelian-Higgs-dark string solutions and we show that Abelian-Higgs-dark strings become unstable above this critical value. Different from the non-interacting case, we would thus expect semilocal strings to be stable for values of the Higgs to gauge boson mass ratio larger than unity. Moreover, the one-parameter family of solutions present in the non-interacting case ceases to exist when semilocal strings interact with dark strings.

Cosmic strings interacting with dark strings

Motivated by astrophysical observations of excess electronic production in the galaxy, new theoretical models of the dark matter sector have been proposed in which the Standard model couples to the dark matter sector through an attractive interaction. The coupling of the Standard model to "dark strings", which are solutions of the low energy dark sector has been investigated recently. Here, we discuss the interaction between dark strings and standard cosmic strings and show that they can form bound states. In the presence of the interaction term, a Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) bound exists that depends on the interaction parameter and we observe that the attractive interaction between dark strings and cosmic strings is most efficient if the two strings are identical. Moreover, our model allows for dark string solution that can lower their energy by coupling to an electromagnetic field. We also investigate the gravitational properties of these solutions and show that they become supermassive with a singular space-time for values of the gravitational coupling larger as compared to the non-interacting case. Moreover, the deficit angle of the solutions decreases with increasing interaction.

Symmetry breaking in (gravitating) scalar field models describing interacting boson stars and Q-balls

We investigate the properties of interacting Q-balls and boson stars that sit on top of each other in great detail. The model that describes these solutions is essentially a (gravitating) two-scalar field model where both scalar fields are complex. We construct interacting Q-balls or boson stars with arbitrarily small charges but finite mass. We observe that in the interacting case - where the interaction can be either due to the potential or due to gravity - two types of solutions exist for equal frequencies: one for which the two scalar fields are equal, but also one for which the two scalar fields differ. This constitutes a symmetry breaking in the model. While for Q-balls asymmetric solutions have always corresponding symmetric solutions and are thus likely unstable to decay to symmetric solutions with lower energy, there exists a parameter regime for interacting boson stars, where only asymmetric solutions exist. We present the domain of existence for two interacting non-rotating solutions as well as for solutions describing the interaction between rotating and non-rotating Q-balls and boson stars, respectively.

Angularly excited and interacting boson stars and Q-balls

We study angularly excited as well as interacting non-topological solitons, so-called Q-balls and their gravitating counterparts, so-called boson stars in 3+1 dimensions. Q-balls and boson stars carry a non-vanishing Noether charge and arise as solutions of complex scalar field models in a flat space-time background and coupled minimally to gravity, respectively. We present examples of interacting Q-balls that arise due to angular excitations, which are closely related to the spherical harmonics. We also construct explicit examples of rotating boson stars that interact with non-rotating boson stars. We observe that rotating boson stars tend to absorb the non-rotating ones for increasing, but reasonably small gravitational coupling. This is a new phenomenon as compared to the flat space-time limit and is related to the negative contribution of the rotation term to the energy density of the solutions. In addition, our results indicate that a system of a rotating and non-rotating boson star can become unstable if the direct interaction term in the potential is large enough. This instability is related to the appearance of ergoregions.

Non-abelian black holes and black strings in higher dimensions

We review the properties of static, higher dimensional black hole solutions in theories where non-abelian gauge fields are minimally coupled to gravity. It is shown that black holes with hyperspherically symmetric horizon topology do not exist in $d > 4$, but that hyperspherically symmetric black holes can be constructed numerically in generalized Einstein-Yang-Mills models. 5-dimensional black strings with horizon topology S^2 x S^1 are also discussed. These are so-called undeformed and deformed non-abelian black strings, which are translationally invariant and correspond to 4-dimensional non-abelian black holes trivially extended into one extra dimensions. The fact that black strings can be deformed, i.e. axially symmetric for constant values of the extra coordinate is a new feature as compared to black string solutions of Einstein (-Maxwell) theory. It is argued that these non-abelian black strings are thermodynamically unstable.

The logarithmic equation of state for superconducting cosmic strings

This investigation follows up the suggestion that the equation of state for superconducting cosmic strings provided by Witten's prototype biscalar field model can be well represented by an effective Lagrangian of simple logarithmic form depending on only 3 independent parameters. The numerical work described here confirms the validity of this approximation, and initiates the evaluation of the 3 required parameters, as functions of the masses and other parameters specifying the underlying U(1) x U(1) scalar field model in the limit for which the relevant gauge coupling constants are small. In this limit, subject to calibration of the relevant length and mass scales, the scalar field model is characterised by just 3 dimensionless ratios which (in order to provide conducting strings) must be subject to three inequalities (of which two have obvious analytic expressions). It is found here that when all three of these inequalities are satisfied by a reasonably large margin, there is a simple empirical formula that can be used to provide a fairly accurate prescription for the algebraic dependence on these 3 dimensionless ratios of the 3 parameters required for the logarithmic equation of state.

p-q-superstrings in Anti-de-Sitter space-time

We study a field theoretical model for p-q-superstrings in a fixed Anti-de-Sitter background. We find that the presence of the negative cosmological constant tends to decrease the core radius of the strings. Moreover, the binding energy decreases with the increase of the absolute value of the cosmological constant. Studying the effect of the p-q-strings on Anti-de-Sitter space, we observe that the presence of the negative cosmological constant tends to decrease the deficit angle as compared to asymptotically flat space-time.

Cosmic strings in a space-time with positive cosmological constant

We study Abelian strings in a fixed de Sitter background. We find that the gauge and Higgs fields extend smoothly across the cosmological horizon and that the string solutions have oscillating scalar fields outside the cosmological horizon for all currently accepted values of the cosmological constant. If the gauge to Higgs boson mass ratio is small enough, the gauge field function has a power-like behaviour, while it is oscillating outside the cosmological horizon if Higgs and gauge boson mass are comparable. Moreover, we observe that Abelian strings exist only up to a maximal value of the cosmological constant and that two branches of solutions exist that meet at this maximal value. We also construct radially excited solutions that only exist for non-vanishing values of the cosmological constant and are thus a novel feature as compared to flat space-time. Considering the effect of the de Sitter string on the space-time, we observe that the deficit angle increases with increasing cosmological constant. Lensed objects would thus be separated by a larger angle as compared to asymptotically flat space-time.

Interacting Q-balls

We study non-topological solitons, so called Q-balls, which carry a non-vanishing Noether charge and arise as lump solutions of self-interacting complex scalar field models. Explicit examples of new axially symmetric non-spinning Q-ball solutions that have not been studied so far are constructed numerically. These solutions can be interpreted as angular excitations of the fundamental $Q$-balls and are related to the spherical harmonics. Correspondingly, they have higher energy and their energy densities possess two local maxima on the positive z-axis. We also study two Q-balls interacting via a potential term in (3+1) dimensions and construct examples of stationary, solitonic-like objects in (3+1)-dimensional flat space-time that consist of two interacting global scalar fields. We concentrate on configurations composed of one spinning and one non-spinning Q-ball and study the parameter-dependence of the energy and charges of the configuration. In addition, we present numerical evidence that for fixed values of the coupling constants two different types of 2-Q-ball solutions exist: solutions with defined parity, but also solutions which are asymmetric with respect to reflexion through the x-y-plane.

Gravitating (field theoretical) cosmic (p,q)-superstrings

We study field theoretical models for cosmic (p,q)-superstrings in a curved space-time. We discuss both string solutions, i.e. solutions with a conical deficit, but also so-called Melvin solutions, which have a completely different asymptotic behaviour. We show that globally regular gravitating (p,q)-strings exist only in a finite domain of the parameter space and study the dependence of the domain of existence on the parameters in the model. We find that due to the interaction between strings, the parameter range where string solution exist is wider than for non-interacting strings.
