Group extensions with special properties

Given a group G and a G-module A, we show how to determine up to isomorphism the extensions E of A by G so that A embeds as smallest non-trivial term of the derived series or of the lower central series into E.

The Quillen category of finite p-groups and coclass theory

Coclass theory can be used to define infinite families of finite p-groups of a fixed coclass. It is conjectured that the groups in one of these infinite families all have isomorphic mod-p cohomology rings. Here we prove that almost all groups in one of these infinite families have equivalent Quillen categories. We also show how the Quillen categories of the groups in an infinite family are connected to the Quillen category of their associated infinite pro-p-group of finite coclass.

The construction of finite solvable groups revisited

We describe a new approach towards the systematic construction of finite groups up to isomorphism. This approach yields a practical algorithm for the construction of finite solvable groups up to isomorphism. We report on a GAP implementation of this method for finite solvable groups and exhibit some sample applications.

Coclass theory for nilpotent semigroups via their associated algebras

Coclass theory has been a highly successful approach towards the investigation and classification of finite nilpotent groups. Here we suggest a similar approach for finite nilpotent semigroups. This differs from the group theory setting in that we additionally use certain algebras associated to the considered semigroups. We propose a series of conjectures on our suggested approach. If these become theorems, then this would reduce the classification of nilpotent semigroups of a fixed coclass to a finite calculation. Our conjectures are supported by the classification of nilpotent semigroups of coclass 0 and 1. Computational experiments suggest that the conjectures also hold for the nilpotent semigroups of coclass 2 and 3.

Infinite sequences of $p$-groups with fixed coclass

Eick & Leedham-Green sketched a construction for infinite sequences of finite $p$-groups with fixed coclass. These infinite sequences have turned out to be very useful in the theory of finite $p$-groups. We exhibit a detailed description for the construction of the finite sequences and we determine presentations for the infinite sequences for the primes and coclasses $(2,1)$, $(2,2)$ and $(3,1)$.

Computing faithful representations for nilpotent Lie algebras

We describe three methods to determine a faithful representation of small dimension for a finite-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra over an arbitrary field. We apply our methods in finding bounds for the smallest dimension $μ(\Lg)$ of a faithful $\Lg$-module for some nilpotent Lie algebras $\Lg$. In particular, we describe an infinite family of filiform nilpotent Lie algebras $\Lf_n$ of dimension $n$ over $\Q$ and conjecture that $μ(\Lf_n) > n+1$. Experiments with our algorithms suggest that $μ(\Lf_n)$ is polynomial in $n$.

A nilpotent quotient algorithm for L-presented groups

The main part of this paper contains a description of a nilpotent quotient algorithm for L-presented groups and a report on applications of its implementation in the computer algebra system GAP. The appendix introduces two new infinite series of L-presented groups. Apart from being of interest in their own right, these new L-presented groups serve as examples for applications of the nilpotent quotient algorithm.

Polycyclic groups: A new platform for cryptology?

We propose a new cryptosystem based on polycyclic groups. The cryptosystem is based on the fact that the word problem can be solved effectively in polycyclic groups, while the known solutions to the conjugacy problem are far less efficient.
