Performance of a SuperCDMS HVeV Detector with Sub-eV Energy Resolution and Single Charge-sensitivity

We present a detailed characterization of a new generation of athermal-phonon single-charge sensitive Si HVeV detectors, the best of which achieved 589~meV~$\pm$~5~meV baseline resolution. Our sub-eV energy resolution enables precise measurements of single-photon events and reveal consistent energy losses of 0.92~eV~$\pm$~0.02~eV per charge excitation across two facilities. We demonstrate that the noise for these detectors is well described using a standard Transition Edge Sensor noise model. We also measure a nominal phonon collection efficiency of 45\%~$\pm$~3\%~(stat.)~$\pm$~6\%~(syst.) in the best performing device, establishing these detectors as the most efficient athermal phonon detectors to date, limited only by intrinsic limitations of quasiparticle generation.

Energy Loss Due to Defect Formation from $^{206}$Pb Recoils in SuperCDMS Germanium Detectors

The Super Cryogenic Dark Matter Search experiment (SuperCDMS) at the Soudan Underground Laboratory studied energy loss associated with Frenkel defect formation in germanium crystals at mK temperatures using in situ $^{210}$Pb sources. We examine the spectrum of $^{206}$Pb nuclear recoils near its expected 103 keV endpoint energy and determine an energy loss of $\left(6.08\pm0.18\right)$ %, which we attribute to defect formation. From this result and using TRIM simulations, we extract the first experimentally determined average displacement threshold energy of $\left(19.7^{+0.6}_{-0.5}\right)$ eV for germanium. This has implications for the analysis thresholds of future germanium-based dark matter searches.

Design Overview of the DM Radio Pathfinder Experiment

We introduce the DM Radio, a dual search for axion and hidden photon dark matter using a tunable superconducting lumped-element resonator. We discuss the prototype DM Radio Pathfinder experiment, which will probe hidden photons in the 500 peV (100 kHz)-50 neV (10 MHz) mass range. We detail the design of the various components: the LC resonant detector, the resonant frequency tuning procedure, the differential SQUID readout circuit, the shielding, and the cryogenic mounting structure. We present the current status of the pathfinder experiment and illustrate its potential science reach in the context of the larger experimental program.

Growth of alpha-beta phase W thin films over steep Al topography in a confocal sputtering machine

We report on thin-film processing improvements in the fabrication of superconducting quasiparticle-trap-assisted electrothermal-feedback transition-edge sensors (QETs) used in the design of Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) detectors. The work was performed as part of a detector upgrade project that included optimization of a new confocal sputtering system and development of etch recipes compatible with patterning 40 nm-thick, mixed-phase W films deposited on 300-600 nm-thick, patterned Al. We found that our standard exothermic Al wet etch recipes provided inadequate W/Al interfaces and led to poor device performance. We developed a modified Al wet-etch recipe that effectively mitigates geometrical step-coverage limitations while maintaining our existing device design. Data presented here include SEM and FIB images of films and device interfaces obtained with the new Al etch method. We also introduce a method for quantitatively measuring the energy collection efficiency through these interfaces.
