Bounds on the Minimum Eigenvalue Modulus for Hadamard Products of $\mathbf{M}$- and $\mathbf{H}$-Matrices and Their Inverses

The quantity $q(A\circ A^{-1})$, the minimum modulus of the eigenvalues of $A\circ A^{-1}$, arises naturally in connection with positive diagonal symmetrizability. For an invertible $\mathbf{M}$-matrix $A$ of order $n$, the classical bounds $\frac{2}{n}\leq q(A\circ A^{-1})\leq 1$ are known. We discuss the sharpness of the lower bound $\frac{2}{n}$ and investigate the converse of a related result involving the Jacobi iteration matrix. In particular, we show that $ρ(J_{A_k})\to 1$ does not, in general, imply $q(A_k\circ A_k^{-1})\to \frac{2}{n}$, and identify a class for which this implication holds. We then turn to invertible $\mathbf{H}$-matrices, a broader class that contains invertible $\mathbf{M}$-matrices. We show that $A\circ A^{-1}$ is an invertible $\mathbf{H}$-matrix whenever $A$ is an invertible $\mathbf{H}$-matrix. In contrast to the $\mathbf{M}$-matrix setting, $q(A\circ A^{-1})$ can be arbitrarily close to zero. However, replacing $A^{-1}$ by the inverse of the comparison matrix restores the classical lower bound: we prove that $q(A\circ\mathcal{M}(A)^{-1})\geq \frac{2}{n}$ and obtain further bounds involving the Jacobi iteration matrix of $\mathcal{M}(A)$. Finally, for positive diagonally symmetrizable invertible $\mathbf{H}$-matrices, we establish the upper bound $q(A\circ A^{-1})\leq1$ and, in the irreducible case, characterize when equality occurs.

SNT-Rank: Kronecker Products and Euclidean Distance Matrices

Symmetric nonnegative matrix trifactorizations (SN-Trifactorizations) were introduced by Bukovšek-Šmigoc [Linear Algebra Appl. 2023] as a symmetric analogue of nonnegative matrix factorizations. A SN-Trifactorization of a symmetric nonnegative matrix $A$ is of the form $A = BCB^{T},$ where $B$ and $C$ are nonnegative matrices, with $C$ symmetric. The associated SNT-rank of $A$ is defined as the smallest integer $k$ for which $A$ admits such a factorization with $C \in \mathbb{R}_{+}^{k \times k}$. In this paper, we derive sharper upper bounds for the SNT-rank of the Euclidean distance matrices considered by Shitov [Linear Algebra Appl. 2025] and Bukovšek-Šmigoc [Linear Algebra Appl. 2023]. We also establish several new relationships between the rank and the SNT-rank of symmetric nonnegative matrices and show that the SNT-rank is submultiplicative with respect to the Kronecker product. Finally, motivated by a conjecture posed in the Dagstuhl Seminar Report 13082, we prove a multiplicativity result for the nonnegative rank under an additional structural assumption. We also partially resolve a conjecture of Vandaele-Gillis-Glineur-Tuyttens [J. Global Optim. 2016].

On semimonotone matrices of exact order two

In this paper, we introduce the notion of (strictly) semimonotone matrices of exact order $k$, where $0\leq k\leq n$, and explore their properties. We fully characterize the $3 \times 3$ (strictly) semimonotone matrices of exact order $2$, and show that the class of $3 \times 3$ semimonotone matrices of exact order $2$ forms a subclass of inverse $\mathbf{Z}$-matrices. We further investigate $ n\times n$ (strictly) semimonotone matrices of exact order $2$, with emphasis on their identification and construction, and establish that every $n\times n$ semimonotone $\mathbf{Z}$-matrix of exact order $2$ is invertible. Additionally, we show that when $n-k=1$, the class of (strictly) semimonotone matrices of exact order $k$ is a subclass of $\mathbf{Z}$-matrices.

On Almost-Type Special Structured Tensor Classes Associated with Semi-Positive Tensors

In this paper, we introduce almost (strictly) semi-positive tensors, which extend the concept of almost (strictly) semimonotone matrices. Furthermore, we provide insights into the characteristics of the entries within these almost (strictly) semi-positive tensors and establish a condition that is both necessary and sufficient for categorizing the underlying tensor as an almost semi-positive tensor. Drawing inspiration from H. Väliaho's work on copositivity, we present the concept of almost (strictly) copositive tensors, which extends the notion of almost (strictly) copositive matrices to tensors. It is shown that a real symmetric tensor is almost (strictly) semi-positive if and only if it is almost (strictly) copositive and a symmetric almost (strictly) semi-positive tensor has a (nonpositive) negative $H^{++}$-eigenvalue. We also establish a relationship between (strictly) diagonally dominant and (strong) $\mathcal{M}$-tensors with (strictly) semi-positive tensors.
