Algebraic geometry in mixed characteristic

Fix a prime number $p$. We report on some recent developments in algebraic geometry (broadly construed) over $p$-adically complete commutative rings. These developments include foundational advances within the subject as well as external applications.

Cohen-Macaulayness of absolute integral closures

We prove that, modulo any power of a prime $p$, the absolute integral closure of an excellent noetherian domain is Cohen-Macaulay. A graded analog is also established, yielding variants of Kodaira vanishing "up to finite covers" in mixed characteristic. Our main tools are (log) prismatic cohomology (which yields a Frobenius action in mixed characteristic) and the $p$-adic Riemann-Hilbert functor for constructible étale $\mathbf{F}_p$-sheaves on varieties over a $p$-adic field (which almost controls perfectified prismatic cohomology).

The six functors for Zariski-constructible sheaves in rigid geometry

We prove a generic smoothness result in rigid analytic geometry over a characteristic zero nonarchimedean field. The proof relies on a novel notion of generic points in rigid analytic geometry which are well-adapted to "spreading out" arguments, in analogy with the use of generic points in scheme theory. As an application, we develop a six functor formalism for Zariski-constructible étale sheaves on characteristic zero rigid spaces. Among other things, this implies that characteristic zero rigid spaces support a well-behaved theory of perverse sheaves.

Totaro's inequality for classifying spaces

For a complex Lie group G and a prime number p, Totaro had conjectured that the dimension of the singular cohomology with Z/p-coefficients of classifying space of G is bounded above by that of the de Rham cohomology of the classifying stack of (the split form of) G in characteristic p. This conjecture was recently proven by Kubrak--Prikhodko. In this note, we give a shorter proof.

Stabilization of the cohomology of thickenings

For a local complete intersection subvariety $X=V({\mathcal I})$ in ${\mathbb P}^n$ over a field of characteristic zero, we show that, in cohomological degrees smaller than the codimension of the singular locus of $X$, the cohomology of vector bundles on the formal completion of ${\mathbb P}^n$ along $X$ can be effectively computed as the cohomology on any sufficiently high thickening $X_t=V({\mathcal I^t})$; the main ingredient here is a positivity result for the normal bundle of $X$. Furthermore, we show that the Kodaira vanishing theorem holds for all thickenings $X_t$ in the same range of cohomological degrees; this extends the known version of Kodaira vanishing on $X$, and the main new ingredient is a version of the Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano vanishing theorem for $X$, formulated in terms of the cotangent complex.

An asymptotic vanishing theorem for the cohomology of thickenings

Let $X$ be a closed equidimensional local complete intersection subscheme of a smooth projective scheme $Y$ over a field, and let $X_t$ denote the $t$-th thickening of $X$ in $Y$. Fix an ample line bundle $\mathcal{O}_Y(1)$ on $Y$. We prove the following asymptotic formulation of the Kodaira vanishing theorem: there exists an integer $c$, such that for all integers $t \geqslant 1$, the cohomology group $H^k(X_t,\mathcal{O}_{X_t}(j))$ vanishes for $k < \dim X$ and $j < -ct$. Note that there are no restrictions on the characteristic of the field, or on the singular locus of $X$. We also construct examples illustrating that a linear bound is indeed the best possible, and that the constant $c$ is unbounded, even in a fixed dimension.

The arc-topology

We study a Grothendieck topology on schemes which we call the $\mathrm{arc}$-topology. This topology is a refinement of the $v$-topology (the pro-version of Voevodsky's $h$-topology) where covers are tested via rank $\leq 1$ valuation rings. Functors which are $\mathrm{arc}$-sheaves are forced to satisfy a variety of glueing conditions such as excision in the sense of algebraic $K$-theory. We show that étale cohomology is an $\mathrm{arc}$-sheaf and deduce various pullback squares in étale cohomology. Using $\mathrm{arc}$-descent, we reprove the Gabber-Huber affine analog of proper base change (in a large class of examples), as well as the Fujiwara-Gabber base change theorem on the étale cohomology of the complement of a henselian pair. As a final application we prove a rigid analytic version of the Artin-Grothendieck vanishing theorem from SGA4, extending results of Hansen.

Remarks on $K(1)$-local $K$-theory

We prove two basic structural properties of the algebraic $K$-theory of rings after $K(1)$-localization at an implicit prime $p$. Our first result (also recently obtained by Land--Meier--Tamme by different methods) states that $L_{K(1)} K(R)$ is insensitive to inverting $p$ on $R$; we deduce this from recent advances in prismatic cohomology and $\mathrm{TC}$. Our second result yields a Künneth formula in $K(1)$-local $K$-theory for adding $p$-power roots of unity to $R$.

Revisiting the de Rham-Witt complex

The goal of this paper is to offer a new construction of the de Rham-Witt complex of smooth varieties over perfect fields of characteristic $p>0$. We introduce a category of cochain complexes equipped with an endomorphism $F$ of underlying graded abelian groups satisfying $dF = pFd$, whose homological algebra we study in detail. To any such object satisfying an abstract analog of the Cartier isomorphism, an elementary homological process associates a generalization of the de Rham-Witt construction. Abstractly, the homological algebra can be viewed as a calculation of the fixed points of the Berthelot-Ogus operator $L η_p$ on the $p$-complete derived category. We give various applications of this approach, including a simplification of the crystalline comparison for the $A Ω$-cohomology theory introduced in [BMS18].

Topological Hochschild homology and integral $p$-adic Hodge theory

In mixed characteristic and in equal characteristic $p$ we define a filtration on topological Hochschild homology and its variants. This filtration is an analogue of the filtration of algebraic $K$-theory by motivic cohomology. Its graded pieces are related in mixed characteristic to the complex $AΩ$ constructed in our previous work, and in equal characteristic $p$ to crystalline cohomology. Our construction of the filtration on $\mathrm{THH}$ is via flat descent to semiperfectoid rings. As one application, we refine the construction of the $AΩ$-complex by giving a cohomological construction of Breuil--Kisin modules for proper smooth formal schemes over $\mathcal O_K$, where $K$ is a discretely valued extension of $\mathbb Q_p$ with perfect residue field. As another application, we define syntomic sheaves $\mathbb Z_p(n)$ for all $n\geq 0$ on a large class of $\mathbb Z_p$-algebras, and identify them in terms of $p$-adic nearby cycles in mixed characteristic, and in terms of logarithmic de~Rham-Witt sheaves in equal characteristic $p$.

Integral p-adic Hodge theory

We construct a new cohomology theory for proper smooth (formal) schemes over the ring of integers of C_p. It takes values in a mixed-characteristic analogue of Dieudonne modules, which was previously defined by Fargues as a version of Breuil-Kisin modules. Notably, this cohomology theory specializes to all other known p-adic cohomology theories, such as crystalline, de Rham and etale cohomology, which allows us to prove strong integral comparison theorems. The construction of the cohomology theory relies on Faltings's almost purity theorem, along with a certain functor $Lη$ on the derived category, defined previously by Berthelot-Ogus. On affine pieces, our cohomology theory admits a relation to the theory of de Rham-Witt complexes of Langer-Zink, and can be computed as a q-deformation of de Rham cohomology.

Regular rings and perfect(oid) algebras

We prove a $p$-adic analog of Kunz's theorem: a $p$-adically complete noetherian ring is regular exactly when it admits a faithfully flat map to a perfectoid ring. This result is deduced from a more precise statement on detecting finiteness of projective dimension of finitely generated modules over noetherian rings via maps to perfectoid rings. We also establish a version of the $p$-adic Kunz's theorem where the flatness hypothesis is relaxed to almost flatness.

Specializing varieties and their cohomology from characteristic $0$ to characteristic $p$

We present a semicontinuity result, proven in recent joint work with Morrow and Scholze, relating the mod $p$ singular cohomology of a smooth projective complex algebraic variety X to the de Rham cohomology of a smooth characteristic $p$ specialization of X: the rank of the former is bounded above by that of the latter. The path to this result passes through $p$-adic Hodge theory and perfectoid geometry, so we survey the relevant aspects of those subjects as well.

On the direct summand conjecture and its derived variant

André recently gave a beautiful proof of Hochster's direct summand conjecture in commutative algebra using perfectoid spaces; his two main results are a generalization of the almost purity theorem (the perfectoid Abhyankar lemma) and a construction of certain faithfully flat extensions of perfectoid algebras where "discriminants" acquire all $p$-power roots. In this paper, we explain a quicker proof of Hochster's conjecture that circumvents the perfectoid Abhyankar lemma; instead, we prove and use a quantitative form of Scholze's Hebbarkeitssatz (the Riemann extension theorem) for perfectoid spaces. The same idea also leads to a proof of a derived variant of the direct summand conjecture put forth by de Jong.

The dualizing complex of $F$-injective and Du Bois singularities

Let $(R,m,k)$ be an excellent local ring of equal characteristic. Let $j$ be a positive integer such that $H_m^i(R)$ has finite length for every $0\leq i 0$ or Du Bois in characteristic $0$, then the truncated dualizing complex $τ_{>-j}ω_R^\bullet$ is quasi-isomorphic to a complex of $k$-vector spaces. As a consequence, $F$-injective or Du Bois singularities with isolated non-Cohen-Macaulay locus are Buchsbaum. Moreover, when $R$ has $F$-rational or rational singularities on the punctured spectrum, we obtain stronger results.

Finiteness of étale fundamental groups by reduction modulo $p$

We introduce a spreading out technique to deduce finiteness results for étale fundamental groups of complex varieties by characteristic $p$ methods, and apply this to recover a finiteness result proven recently for local fundamental groups in characteristic $0$ using birational geometry.
