Annihilating the cohomology of group schemes

Our goal in this note is to show that cohomology classes with coefficients in finite flat group schemes can be killed by finite covers of the base scheme, and similarly for abelian schemes with "finite covers" replaced by "proper covers." We apply this result to commutative algebra by giving a new and more conceptual proof of Hochster-Huneke's theorem on the existence of big Cohen-Macaulay algebras in positive characteristic; all previous proofs of this result were equational or cocycle-theoretic in nature.

Derived splinters in positive characteristic

This paper introduces the notion of a derived splinter. Roughly speaking, a scheme is a derived splinter if it splits off from the coherent cohomology of any proper cover. Over a field of characteristic 0, this condition characterises rational singularities by a result of Kovács. Our main theorem asserts that over a field of characteristic p, derived splinters are the same as (underived) splinters, i.e., as schemes that split off from any finite cover. Using this result, we answer some questions of Karen Smith concerning extending Serre/Kodaira type vanishing results beyond the class of ample line bundles in positive characteristic; these are purely projective geometric statements independent of singularity considerations. In fact, we can prove "up to finite cover" analogues in characteristic p of many vanishing theorems one knows in characteristic 0. All these results fit naturally in the study of F-singularities, and are motivated by a desire to understand the direct summand conjecture

Almost direct summands

In this short note, we point out how some new cases of Hochster's direct summand conjecture can be deduced from fundamental theorems in p-adic Hodge theory due to Faltings. The cases tackled include the ones when the ramification of the map being considered lies entirely in characteristic p.

Log canonical thresholds, F-pure thresholds, and non-standard extensions

We present a new relation between an invariant of singularities in characteristic zero (the log canonical threshold) and an invariant of singularities defined via the Frobenius morphism in positive characteristic (the F-pure threshold). We show that the set of limit points of sequences of the form (c_p), where c_p is the F-pure threshold of an ideal on an n-dimensional smooth variety in characteristic p, coincides with the set of log canonical thresholds of ideals on n-dimensional smooth varieties in characteristic zero. We prove this by combining results of Hara and Yoshida with non-standard constructions.
