Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: A Signal Processing Perspective With Wireless Applications

Antenna array technology enables directional transmission and reception of wireless signals, for communications, localization, and sensing purposes. The signal processing algorithms that underpin this technology began to be developed several decades ago [1], but it is first with the ongoing deployment of the fifth-generation (5G) wireless mobile networks that it becomes a mainstream technology [2]. The number of antenna elements in the arrays of the 5G base stations and user devices can be measured at the order of 100 and 10, respectively. As the networks shift towards using higher frequency bands, more antennas fit into a given aperture. The 5G developments enhance the transmitter and receiver functionalities, but the wireless channel propagation remains an uncontrollable system. This is illustrated in Fig. 1(a) and its mathematical notation will be introduced later. Transmitted signals with three different frequencies are shown to illustrate the fact that attenuation can vary greatly across frequencies. Looking beyond 5G, the advent of electromagnetic components that can shape how they interact with wireless signals enables partial control of the propagation. A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a two-dimensional surface of engineered material whose properties are reconfigurable rather than static [4]. This article provides a tutorial on the fundamental properties of the RIS technology from a signal processing perspective. It is meant as a complement to recent surveys of electromagnetic and hardware aspects [4], [7], [11], acoustics [12], communication theory [13], and localization [8]. We will provide the formulas and derivations that are required to understand and analyze RIS-aided systems using signal processing, and exemplify how they can be utilized for improved communication, localization, and sensing.

Beamspace MIMO for Satellite Swarms

Systems of small distributed satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) transmitting cooperatively to a multiple antenna ground station (GS) are investigated. These satellite swarms have the benefit of much higher spatial separation in the transmit antennas than traditional big satellites with antenna arrays, promising a massive increase in spectral efficiency. However, this would require instantaneous perfect channel state information (CSI) and strong cooperation between satellites. In practice, orbital velocities around 7.5 km/s lead to very short channel coherence times on the order of fractions of the inter-satellite propagation delay, invalidating these assumptions. In this paper, we propose a distributed linear precoding scheme and a GS equalizer relying on local position information. In particular, each satellite only requires information about its own position and that of the GS, while the GS has complete positional information. Due to the deterministic nature of satellite movement this information is easily obtained and no inter-satellite information exchange is required during transmission. Based on the underlying geometrical channel approximation, the optimal inter-satellite distance is obtained analytically. Numerical evaluations show that the proposed scheme is, on average, within 99.8% of the maximum achievable rate for instantaneous CSI and perfect cooperation

Ground-Assisted Federated Learning in LEO Satellite Constellations

In Low Earth Orbit (LEO) mega constellations, there are relevant use cases, such as inference based on satellite imaging, in which a large number of satellites collaboratively train a machine learning model without sharing their local datasets. To address this problem, we propose a new set of algorithms based on Federated learning (FL), including a novel asynchronous FL procedure based on FedAvg that exhibits better robustness against heterogeneous scenarios than the state-of-the-art. Extensive numerical evaluations based on MNIST and CIFAR-10 datasets highlight the fast convergence speed and excellent asymptotic test accuracy of the proposed method.

On-Board Federated Learning for Dense LEO Constellations

Mega-constellations of small-size Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites are currently planned and deployed by various private and public entities. While global connectivity is the main rationale, these constellations also offer the potential to gather immense amounts of data, e.g., for Earth observation. Power and bandwidth constraints together with motives like privacy, limiting delay, or resiliency make it desirable to process this data directly within the constellation. We consider the implementation of on-board federated learning (FL) orchestrated by an out-of-constellation parameter server (PS) and propose a novel communication scheme tailored to support FL. It leverages intra-orbit inter-satellite links, the predictability of satellite movements and partial aggregating to massively reduce the training time and communication costs. In particular, for a constellation with 40 satellites equally distributed among five low Earth orbits and the PS in medium Earth orbit, we observe a 29x speed-up in the training process time and a 8x traffic reduction at the PS over the baseline.

Inter-Plane Inter-Satellite Connectivity in LEO Constellations: Beam Switching vs. Beam Steering

Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations rely on inter-satellite links (ISLs) to provide global connectivity. However, one significant challenge is to establish and maintain inter-plane ISLs, which support communication between different orbital planes. This is due to the fast movement of the infrastructure and to the limited computation and communication capabilities on the satellites. In this paper, we make use of antenna arrays with either Butler matrix beam switching networks or digital beam steering to establish the inter-plane ISLs in a LEO satellite constellation. Furthermore, we present a greedy matching algorithm to establish inter-plane ISLs with the objective of maximizing the sum of rates. This is achieved by sequentially selecting the pairs, switching or pointing the beams and, finally, setting the data rates. Our results show that, by selecting an update period of 30 seconds for the matching, reliable communication can be achieved throughout the constellation, where the impact of interference in the rates is less than 0.7 % when compared to orthogonal links, even for relatively small antenna arrays. Furthermore, doubling the number of antenna elements increases the rates by around one order of magnitude.

Globally Optimal Beamforming for Rate Splitting Multiple Access

We consider globally optimal precoder design for rate splitting multiple access in Gaussian multiple-input single-output downlink channels with respect to weighted sum rate and energy efficiency maximization. The proposed algorithm solves an instance of the joint multicast and unicast beamforming problem and includes multicast- and unicast-only beamforming as special cases. Numerical results show that it outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of numerical stability and converges almost twice as fast.

Hierarchical Resource Allocation: Balancing Throughput and Energy Efficiency in Wireless Systems

A main challenge of 5G and beyond wireless systems is to efficiently utilize the available spectrum and simultaneously reduce the energy consumption. From the radio resource allocation perspective, the solution to this problem is to maximize the energy efficiency instead of the throughput. This results in the optimal benefit-cost ratio between data rate and energy consumption. It also often leads to a considerable reduction in throughput and, hence, an underutilization of the available spectrum. Contemporary approaches to balance these metrics based on multi-objective programming theory often lack operational meaning and finding the correct operating point requires careful experimentation and calibration. Instead, we propose the novel concept of hierarchical resource allocation where conflicting objectives are ordered by their importance. This results in a resource allocation algorithm that strives to minimize the transmit power while keeping the data rate close the maximum achievable throughput. In a typical multi-cell scenario, this strategy is shown to reduces the transmit power consumption by 65% at the cost of a 5% decrease in throughput. Moreover, this strategy also saves energy in scenarios where global energy efficiency maximization fails to achieve any gain over throughput maximization.

LEO Small-Satellite Constellations for 5G and Beyond-5G Communications

The next frontier towards truly ubiquitous connectivity is the use of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) small-satellite constellations to support 5G and Beyond-5G (B5G) networks. Besides enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and massive machine-type communications (mMTC), LEO constellations can support ultra-reliable communications (URC) with relaxed latency requirements of a few tens of milliseconds. Small-satellite impairments and the use of low orbits pose major challenges to the design and performance of these networks, but also open new innovation opportunities. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the physical and logical links, along with the essential architectural and technological components that enable the full integration of LEO constellations into 5G and B5G systems. Furthermore, we characterize and compare each physical link category and explore novel techniques to maximize the achievable data rates.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Operation under Predictable Receiver Mobility: A Continuous Time Propagation Model

The operation of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) under predictable receiver mobility is investigated. We develop a continuous time system model for multipath channels and discuss the optimal IRS configuration with respect to received power, Doppler spread, and delay spread. It is shown that the received power can be maximized without adding Doppler spread to the system. In a numerical case study, we show that an IRS having the size of just two large billboards can improve the link budget of ground to Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite links by up to 6 dB. It also adds a second, almost equivalently strong, communication path that improves the link reliability.

Mixed Monotonic Programming for Fast Global Optimization

While globally optimal solutions to many convex programs can be computed efficiently in polynomial time, this is, in general, not possible for nonconvex optimization problems. Therefore, locally optimal approaches or other efficient suboptimal heuristics are usually applied for practical implementations. However, there is also a strong interest in computing globally optimal solutions of nonconvex problems in offline simulations in order to benchmark the faster suboptimal algorithms. Global solutions often rely on monotonicity properties. A common approach is to reformulate problems into a canonical monotonic optimization problem where the monotonicity becomes evident, but this often comes at the cost of nested optimizations, increased numbers of variables, and/or slow convergence. The framework of mixed monotonic programming (MMP) proposed in this paper avoids such performance-deteriorating reformulations by revealing hidden monotonicity properties directly in the original problem formulation. By means of a wide range of application examples from the area of signal processing for communications (including energy efficiency for green communications, resource allocation in interference networks, scheduling for fairness and quality of service, as well as beamformer design in multiantenna systems), we demonstrate that the novel MMP approach leads to tremendous complexity reductions compared to state-of-the-art methods for global optimization. However, the framework is not limited to optimizing communication systems, and we expect that similar speed-ups can be obtained for optimization problems from other areas of research as well.

A Globally Optimal Energy-Efficient Power Control Framework and its Efficient Implementation in Wireless Interference Networks

This work develops a novel power control framework for energy-efficient power control in wireless networks. The proposed method is a new branch-and-bound procedure based on problem-specific bounds for energy-efficiency maximization that allow for faster convergence. This enables to find the global solution for all of the most common energy-efficient power control problems with a complexity that, although still exponential in the number of variables, is much lower than other available global optimization frameworks. Moreover, the reduced complexity of the proposed framework allows its practical implementation through the use of deep neural networks. Specifically, thanks to its reduced complexity, the proposed method can be used to train an artificial neural network to predict the optimal resource allocation. This is in contrast with other power control methods based on deep learning, which train the neural network based on suboptimal power allocations due to the large complexity that generating large training sets of optimal power allocations would have with available global optimization methods. As a benchmark, we also develop a novel first-order optimal power allocation algorithm. Numerical results show that a neural network can be trained to predict the optimal power allocation policy.

Efficient Global Optimal Resource Allocation in Non-Orthogonal Interference Networks

Many resource allocation tasks are challenging global (i.e., non-convex) optimization problems. The main issue is that the computational complexity of these problems grows exponentially in the number of variables instead of polynomially as for many convex optimization problems. However, often the non-convexity stems only from a subset of variables. Conventional global optimization frameworks like monotonic optimization or DC programming treat all variables as global variables and require complicated, problem specific decomposition approaches to exploit the convexity in some variables. To overcome this challenge, we develop an easy-to-use algorithm that inherently differentiates between convex and non-convex variables, preserving the low computational complexity in the number of convex variables. Another issue with these widely used frameworks is that they may suffer from severe numerical problems. We discuss this issue in detail and provide a clear motivating example. The solution to this problem is to replace the traditional approach of finding an ε-approximate solution by the novel concept of ε-essential feasibility. The underlying algorithmic approach is called successive incumbent transcending (SIT) algorithm and builds the foundation of our developed algorithm. A further highlight of this algorithm is that it inherently treats fractional objectives making the use of Dinkelbach's iterative algorithm obsolete. Numerical experiments show a speed-up of four orders of magnitude over state-of-the-art algorithms and almost three orders of magnitude of additional speed-up over Dinkelbach's algorithm for fractional programs.

Throughput and Energy-Efficient Network Slicing

Network slicing allows 5G network operators to provide service to multiple tenants with diverging service requirements. This paper considers network slicing aware optimal resource allocation in terms of throughput and energy efficiency. We define a heterogeneous Quality of Service (QoS) framework for a sliced radio access network network with per-slice zero-forcing beamforming and jointly optimize power and bandwidth allocation across slices and users. The Pareto boundary of this multi-objective optimization problem is obtained by two different algorithms based on the utility profile and scalarization approaches combined with generalized fractional programming. Numerical results show the merits of jointly allocating bandwidth and transmission power and how throughput and global energy efficiency are influenced by slice specific QoS requirements.

Optimization of Weighted Individual Energy Efficiencies in Interference Network

This paper studies the maximization of the weighted sum energy efficiency (WSEE). We derive a first-order optimal algorithm applicable to a wide class of communication scenarios exhibiting very fast convergence. We also discuss how to leverage monotonic optimization and fractional programming to obtain a global optimal solution at the cost of higher computational complexity. The WSEE of interference networks is studied in detail with an application to relay-assisted multi-cell communication. This scenario is modeled as a non-regenerative multi-way relay channel and the achievable rate region is derived. We apply the proposed algorithm to this scenario and compare its performance to the global optimal algorithm. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm often achieves the global optimal solution and is close to it otherwise. Convergence is achieved within 10 iterations, while the global optimal solution may require more than $10^6$ iterations.

Energy Efficiency in MIMO Underlay and Overlay Device-to-Device Communications and Cognitive Radio Systems

This paper addresses the problem of resource allocation for systems in which a primary and a secondary link share the available spectrum by an underlay or overlay approach. After observing that such a scenario models both cognitive radio and D2D communications, we formulate the problem as the maximization of the secondary energy efficiency subject to a minimum rate requirement for the primary user. This leads to challenging non-convex, fractional problems. In the underlay scenario, we obtain the global solution by means of a suitable reformulation. In the overlay scenario, two algorithms are proposed. The first one yields a resource allocation fulfilling the first-order optimality conditions of the resource allocation problem, by solving a sequence of easier fractional problems. The second one enjoys a weaker optimality claim, but an even lower computational complexity. Numerical results demonstrate the merits of the proposed algorithms both in terms of energy-efficient performance and complexity, also showing that the two proposed algorithms for the overlay scenario perform very similarly, despite the different complexity.

Instantaneous Relaying for the 3-Way Relay Channel with Circular Message Exchanges

The 3-user discrete memoryless multi-way relay channel with circular message exchange and instantaneous relaying is investigated. We first show that this channel is effectively a 3-user interference channel with receiver message side information for every fixed (and instantaneous) relay mapping. Then, we extend the Han-Kobayashi coding scheme to this channel. Finally, we apply these results to Gaussian channels with amplify-and-forward relaying and present numerical results showing the gain of the proposed scheme compared to the state of the art.

Resource Allocation for Energy-Efficient 3-Way Relay Channels

Throughput and energy efficiency in 3-way relay channels are studied in this paper. Unlike previous contributions, we consider a circular message exchange. First, an outer bound and achievable sum rate expressions for different relaying protocols are derived for 3-way relay channels. The sum capacity is characterized for certain SNR regimes. Next, leveraging the derived achievable sum rate expressions, cooperative and competitive maximization of the energy efficiency are considered. For the cooperative case, both low-complexity and globally optimal algorithms for joint power allocation at the users and at the relay are designed so as to maximize the system global energy efficiency. For the competitive case, a game theoretic approach is taken, and it is shown that the best response dynamics is guaranteed to converge to a Nash equilibrium. A power consumption model for mmWave board-to-board communications is developed, and numerical results are provided to corroborate and provide insight on the theoretical findings.
