G_2 gauge theory at finite temperature

The gauge group being centreless, $G_2$ gauge theory is a good laboratory for studying the role of the centre of the group for colour confinement in Yang-Mills gauge theories. In this paper, we investigate $G_2$ pure gauge theory at finite temperature on the lattice. By studying the finite size scaling of the plaquette, the Polyakov loop and their susceptibilities, we show that a deconfinement phase transition takes place. The analysis of the pseudocritical exponents give strong evidence of the deconfinement transition being first order. Implications of our findings for scenarios of colour confinement are discussed.

Baryon currents in QCD with compact dimensions

On a compact space with non-trivial cycles, for sufficiently small values of the radii of the compact dimensions, SU(N) gauge theories coupled with fermions in the fundamental representation spontaneously break charge conjugation, time reversal and parity. We show at one loop in perturbation theory that physical signature for this phenomenon is a non-zero baryonic current wrapping around the compact directions. The persistence of this current beyond the perturbative regime is checked by lattice simulations.

Universality of k-string Tensions from Holography and the Lattice

We consider large Wilson loops with quarks in higher representations in SU(N) Yang-Mills theories. We consider representations with common N-ality and check whether the expectation value of the Wilson loop depends on the specific representation or only on the N-ality. In the framework of AdS/CFT we show that = dim R exp -sigma_k A, namely that the string tension depends only on the N-ality k but the pre-exponent factor is representation dependent. The lattice strong coupling expansion yields an identical result at infinite N, but shows a representation dependence of the string tension at finite N, a result which we interpret as an artifact. In order to confirm the representation independence of the string tension we re-analyse results of lattice simulations involving operators with common N-ality in pure SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. We find that the picture of the representation-independence of the string tension is confirmed by the spectrum of excited states in the stringy sector, while the lowest-lying states seem to depend on the representation. We argue that this unexpected result is due to the insufficient distance of the static sources for the asymptotic behaviour to be visible and give an estimate of the distance above which a truly representation-independent spectrum should be observed.

On the Interplay of Fermions and Monopoles in Compact QED_3

The infra-red properties of three-dimensional abelian lattice gauge theory are known to be governed by a neutral plasma of magnetic monopole excitations. We address the fate of these monopoles in the presence of light dynamical fermions, using a lattice formulation of compact QED_3 with N_f=4 fermion flavors supplemented by a four-fermi contact term permitting numerical Monte Carlo simulations in the chiral limit. Our data hint at a restoration of chiral symmetry above a critical value of the (inverse) coupling beta. By performing simulations in a sector of non-vanishing magnetic charge, we are able to study the response of the theory to an external magnetic test charge. Our results suggest that the monopole plasma persists even once chiral symmetry is restored, and hence survives the continuum limit.

't Hooft loops and perturbation theory

We show that high-temperature perturbation theory describes extremely well the area law of SU(N) spatial 't Hooft loops, or equivalently the tension of the interface between different Z_N vacua in the deconfined phase. For SU(2), the disagreement between Monte Carlo data and lattice perturbation theory for sigma(T)/T^2 is less than 2%, down to temperatures O(10) T_c. For SU(N), N>3, the ratios of interface tensions, (sigma_k/sigma_1)(T), agree with perturbation theory, which predicts tiny deviations from the ratio of Casimirs, down to nearly T_c. In contrast, individual tensions differ markedly from the perturbative expression. In all cases, the required precision Monte Carlo measurements are made possible by a simple but powerful modification of the 'snake' algorithm.

The large $N$ limit from the lattice

A numerical study of the string tension and of the masses of the lowest-lying glueballs is performed in SU($N$) gauge theories for $2 \le N \le 8$ in D=3+1 and $2 \le N \le 6$ in D=2+1. It is shown that for the string tension a smooth $N \to \infty$ limit exists that depends only on the 't Hooft coupling $λ= g^2 N$. An extrapolation of the masses of the lightest glueballs to $N = \infty$ using a power series in $1/N^2$ shows that the leading correction to the infinite $N$ value accounts for finite $N$ effects for $N$ at least as small as 3 and all the way down to N=2 in many cases. $k$-string tension ratios and possible issues connected with correlation functions at large $N$ are also discussed.

Measuring interface tensions in 4d SU(N) lattice gauge theories

We propose a new algorithm to compute the order-order interface tension in SU(N) lattice gauge theories. The algorithm is trivially generalizable to a variety of models, e.g., spin models. In the case N=3, via the perfect wetting hypothesis, we can estimate the order-disorder interface tension. In the case N=4, we study the ratio of dual k-tensions and find that it satisfies Casimir scaling down to T=1.2 T_c.

Glueballs and k-strings in SU(N) gauge theories : calculations with improved operators

We test a variety of blocking and smearing algorithms for constructing glueball and string wave-functionals, and find some with much improved overlaps onto the lightest states. We use these algorithms to obtain improved results on the tensions of k-strings in SU(4), SU(6), and SU(8) gauge theories. We emphasise the major systematic errors that still need to be controlled in calculations of heavier k-strings, and perform calculations in SU(4) on an anisotropic lattice in a bid to minimise one of these. All these results point to the k-string tensions lying part-way between the `MQCD' and `Casimir Scaling' conjectures, with the power in 1/N of the leading correction lying in [1,2]. We also obtain some evidence for the presence of quasi-stable strings in calculations that do not use sources, and observe some near-degeneracies between (excited) strings in different representations. We also calculate the lightest glueball masses for N=2, ...,8, and extrapolate to N=infinity, obtaining results compatible with earlier work. We show that the N=infinity factorisation of the Euclidean correlators that are used in such mass calculations does not make the masses any less calculable at large N.

Topology of SU(N) gauge theories at T=0 and T=Tc

We calculate the topological charge density of SU(N) lattice gauge fields for values of N up to N=8. Our T=0 topological susceptibility appears to approach a finite non-zero limit at N=infinity that is consistent with earlier extrapolations from smaller values of N. Near the deconfining temperature Tc we are able to investigate separately the confined and deconfined phases, since the transition is quite strongly first order. We find that the topological susceptibility of the confined phase is always very similar to that at T=0. By contrast, in the deconfined phase at larger N there are no topological fluctuations except for rare, isolated and small instantons. This shows that as N->infinity the large-T suppression of large instantons and the large-N suppression of small instantons overlap, even at T=Tc, so as to suppress all topological fluctuations in the deconfined phase. In the confined phase by contrast, the size distribution is much the same at all T, becoming more peaked as N grows, suggesting that D(rho) is proportional to a delta function at N=infinity, centered on rho close to 1/Tc.

The high temperature phase transition in SU(N) gauge theories

We calculate the continuum value of the deconfining temperature in units of the string tension for SU(4), SU(6) and SU(8) gauge theories, and we recalculate its value for SU(2) and SU(3). We find that the $N$-dependence for $2 \leq N \leq 8$ is well fitted by $T_c/\sqrt{sigma} = 0.596(4) + 0.453(30)/N^2$, showing a rapid convergence to the large-N limit. We confirm our earlier result that the phase transition is first order for $N \geq 3$ and that it becomes stronger with increasing $N$. We also confirm that as $N$ increases the finite volume corrections become rapidly smaller and the phase transition becomes visible on ever smaller volumes. We interpret the latter as being due to the fact that the tension of the domain wall that separates the confining and deconfining phases increases rapidly with $N$. We speculate on the connection to Eguchi-Kawai reduction and to the idea of a Master Field.

Numerical Portrait of a Relativistic Thin Film BCS Superfluid

We present results of numerical simulations of the 2+1d Nambu - Jona-Lasinio model with a non-zero baryon chemical potential mu including the effects of a diquark source term. Diquark condensates, susceptibilities and masses are measured as functions of source strength j. The results suggest that diquark condensation does not take place in the high density phase mu>mu_c, but rather that the condensate scales non-analytically with j implying a line of critical points and long range phase coherence. Analogies are drawn with the low temperature phase of the 2d XY model. The spectrum of the spin-1/2 sector is also studied yielding the quasiparticle dispersion relation. There is no evidence for a non-zero gap; rather the results are characteristic of a normal Fermi liquid with Fermi velocity less than that of light. We conclude that the high density phase of the model describes a relativistic gapless thin film BCS superfluid.

Critical Behaviour in the Dense Planar NJL Model

We present results of a Monte Carlo simulation of a 2+1 dimensional Nambu - Jona-Lasinio model including diquark source terms. A diquark condensate is measured as a function of source strength j. In the vacuum phase vanishes linearly with j as expected, but simulations in a region with non-zero baryon density suggest a power-law scaling and hence a critical system for all mu > mu_c. There is no diquark condensation signalling superfluidity. Comparisons are drawn with known results in two dimensional theories, and with the pseudogap phase in cuprate superconductors. We also measure the dispersion relation E(k) for fermionic excitations, and find results consistent with a sharp Fermi surface. Any superfluid gap Delta is constrained to be much less than the constituent quark mass scale Sigma_0.

The Phase Diagram of the Three Dimensional Thirring Model

We present Monte Carlo simulation results for the three dimensional Thirring model on moderate sized lattices using a hybrid molecular dynamics algorithm which permits an odd or non-integer number Nf of fermion flavors. We find a continuous chiral symmetry breaking transition for Nf approximately equal to 3 with critical exponents consistent with expectations from previous studies. For Nf=5 the order of the transition is difficult to determine on the lattice sizes explored. We present a phase diagram for the model in the (1/g^2,Nf) plane and contrast our findings with expectations based on approximate solutions of the continuum Schwinger-Dyson equations.
