Singular multiple integrals and nonlinear potentials

We prove sharp partial regularity criteria of nonlinear potential theoretic nature for the Lebesgue-Serrin-Marcellini extension of nonhomogeneous singular multiple integrals featuring $(p,q)$-growth conditions.

Partial regularity for minimizers of discontinuous quasiconvex integrals with general growth

We prove the partial Hölder continuity for minimizers of quasiconvex functionals \[ \mathcal{F}({\bf u}) \colon =\int_Ω f(x,{\bf u},D{\bf u})\,\mathrm{d}x, \] where $f$ satisfies a uniform VMO condition with respect to the $x$-variable and is continuous with respect to ${\bf u}$. The growth condition with respect to the gradient variable is assumed a general one.

Schauder type estimates for degenerate Kolmogorov equations with Dini continuous coefficients

We study the regularity properties of the second order linear operator in $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$: \begin{equation*} \mathscr{L} u := \sum_{j,k= 1}^{m} a_{jk}\partial_{x_j x_k}^2 u + \sum_{j,k= 1}^{N} b_{jk}x_k \partial_{x_j} u - \partial_t u, \end{equation*} where $A = \left( a_{jk} \right)_{j,k= 1, \dots, m}, B= \left( b_{jk} \right)_{j,k= 1, \dots, N}$ are real valued matrices with constant coefficients, with $A$ symmetric and strictly positive. We prove that, if the operator $\mathscr{L}$ satisfies Hörmander's hypoellipticity condition, and $f$ is a Dini continuous function, then the second order derivatives of the solution $u$ to the equation $\mathscr{L} u = f$ are Dini continuous functions as well. We also consider the case of Dini continuous coefficients $a_{jk}$'s. A key step in our proof is a Taylor formula for classical solutions to $\mathscr{L} u = f$ that we establish under minimal regularity assumptions on $u$.

Relaxation of nonlinear elastic energies related to Orlicz-Sobolev nematic elastomers

We compute the relaxation of the total energy related to a variational model for nematic elastomers, involving a nonlinear elastic mechanical energy depending on the orientation of the molecules of the nematic elastomer, and a nematic Oseen--Frank energy in the deformed configuration. The main assumptions are that the quasiconvexification of the mechanical term is polyconvex and that the deformation belongs to an Orlicz-Sobolev space with an integrability just above the space dimension minus one, and does not present cavitation. We benefit from the fine properties of orientation-preserving maps satisfying that regularity requirement proven in \cite{HS} and extend the result of \cite{MCOl} to Orlicz spaces with a suitable growth condition at infinity.

Orlicz-Sobolev nematic elastomers

We extend the existence theorems in [Barchiesi, Henao \& Mora-Corral; ARMA 224], for models of nematic elastomers and magnetoelasticity, to a larger class in the scale of Orlicz spaces. These models consider both an elastic term where a polyconvex energy density is composed with an unknown state variable defined in the deformed configuration, and a functional corresponding to the nematic energy (or the exchange and magnetostatic energies in magnetoelasticity) where the energy density is integrated over the deformed configuration. In order to obtain the desired compactness and lower semicontinuity, we show that the regularity requirement that maps create no new surface can still be imposed when the gradients are in an Orlicz class with an integrability just above the space dimension minus one. We prove that the fine properties of orientation-preserving maps satisfying that regularity requirement (namely, being weakly 1-pseudomonotone, $\mathcal H^1$-continuous, a.e.\ differentiable, and a.e.\ locally invertible) are still valid in the Orlicz-Sobolev setting.

Minimizers of a Landau-de Gennes Energy with a Subquadratic Elastic Energy

We study a modified Landau-de Gennes model for nematic liquid crystals, where the elastic term is assumed to be of subquadratic growth in the gradient. We analyze the behaviour of global minimizers in two- and three-dimensional domains, subject to uniaxial boundary conditions, in the asymptotic regime where the length scale of the defect cores is small compared to the length scale of the domain. We obtain uniform convergence of the minimizers and of their gradients, away from the singularities of the limiting uniaxial map. We also demonstrate the presence of maximally biaxial cores in minimizers on two-dimensional domains, when the temperature is sufficiently low.

A boundary regularity result for minimizers of variational integrals with nonstandard growth

We prove global Lipschitz regularity for a wide class of convex variational integrals among all functions in $W^{1,1}$ with prescribed (sufficiently regular) boundary values, which are not assumed to satisfy any geometrical constraint (as for example bounded slope condition). Furthermore, we do not assume any restrictive assumption on the geometry of the domain and the result is valid for all sufficiently smooth domains. The result is achieved with a suitable approximation of the functional together with a new construction of appropriate barrier functions.
