Number fields generated by points in linear systems on curves

We develop techniques for determining the fibers of a morphism of curves $\phi: C \to D$ over a nonarchimedean local field $K$. These results have applications to studying closed point on curves over global fields since closed points on $C$ of large degree or of very small degree are known to all arise as fibers of morphisms.

Quartic del Pezzo surfaces without quadratic points

Previous work of the authors showed that every quartic del Pezzo surface over a number field has index dividing $2$ (i.e., has a closed point of degree $2$ modulo $4$),, and asked whether such surfaces always have a closed point of degree $2$. We resolve this by constructing infinitely many quartic del Pezzo surfaces over $\mathbb{Q}$ without degree $2$ points. These are the first examples of smooth intersections of two quadrics with index strictly less than the minimal degree of a closed point.

Isolated and parameterized points on curves

We give a self-contained introduction to isolated points on curves and their counterpoint, parameterized points, that situates these concepts within the study of the arithmetic of curves. In particular, we show how natural geometric constructions of infinitely many degree d points on curves motivate the definitions of $\mathbb{P}^1$- and AV-parameterized points and explain how a result of Faltings implies that there are only finitely many isolated points on any curve. We use parameterized points to deduce properties of the density degree set and show that parameterized points of very low degree arise for a unique geometric reason. The paper includes several examples that illustrate the possible behaviors of degree d points.

Conic bundle threefolds differing by a constant Brauer class and connections to rationality

A double cover $Y$ of $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^2$ ramified over a general $(2,2)$-divisor will have the structure of a geometrically standard conic bundle ramified over a smooth plane quartic $\Delta \subset \mathbb{P}^2$ via the second projection. These threefolds are rational over algebraically closed fields; however, over nonclosed fields, including $\mathbb{R}$, their rationality is an open problem. In this paper, we characterize rationality over $\mathbb{R}$ when $\Delta(\mathbb{R})$ has at least two connected components (extending work of M. Ji and the second author) and over local fields when all odd degree fibers of the first projection have nonsquare discriminant. We obtain these applications by proving general results comparing the conic bundle structure on $Y$ with the conic bundle structure on a well-chosen intersection of two quadrics. The difference between these two conic bundles is encoded by a constant Brauer class, and we prove that this class encodes the obstruction to the existence of a section of the first projection $Y\to\mathbb{P}^1$.

Curve classes on conic bundle threefolds and applications to rationality

We undertake a study of conic bundle threefolds $π\colon X\to W$ over geometrically rational surfaces whose associated discriminant covers $\tildeΔ\toΔ\subset W$ are smooth and geometrically irreducible. First, we determine the structure of the group $\mathrm{CH}^2 X_{\overline{k}}$ of rational equivalence classes of curves. Precisely, we construct a Galois-equivariant group homomorphism from $\mathrm{CH}^2X_{\overline{k}}$ to a group scheme associated to the discriminant cover $\tildeΔ\to Δ$ of $X$. The target group scheme is a generalization of the Prym variety of $\tildeΔ\toΔ$ and so our result can be viewed as a generalization of Beauville's result that the algebraically trivial curve classes on $X_{\overline{k}}$ are parametrized by the Prym variety. We apply our structural result on curve classes to study the refined intermediate Jacobian torsor (IJT) obstruction to rationality introduced by Hassett--Tschinkel and Benoist--Wittenberg. The first case of interest is $W = \mathbb P^2$ and $Δ$ is a smooth plane quartic. In this case, we show that the IJT obstruction characterizes rationality when the ground field has less arithmetic complexity (precisely, when the $2$-torsion in the Brauer group of the ground field is trivial). We also show that a hypothesis of this form is necessary by constructing, over any $k \subset\mathbb R$, a conic bundle threefold with $Δ$ a smooth quartic where the IJT obstruction vanishes, yet $X$ is irrational over $k$.

Degrees of points on varieties over Henselian fields

Let $W/K$ be a nonempty scheme over the field of fractions of a Henselian local ring $R$. A result of Gabber, Liu and Lorenzini shows that the GCD of the set of degrees of closed points on $W$ (which is called the index of $W/K$) can be computed from data pertaining only to the special fiber of a proper regular model of $W$ over $R$. We show that the entire set of degrees of closed points on $W$ can be computed from data pertaining only to the special fiber, provided the special fiber is a strict normal crossings divisor. As a consequence we obtain an algorithm to compute the degree set of any smooth curve over a Henselian field with finite or algebraically closed residue field. Using this we show that degree sets of curves over such fields can be dramatically different than degree sets of curves over finitely generated fields. For example, while the degree set of a curve over a finitely generated field contains all sufficiently large multiples of the index, there are curves over $p$-adic fields with index $1$ whose degree set excludes all integers that are coprime to $6$.

Persistence of the Brauer-Manin obstruction on cubic surfaces

Let $X$ be a cubic surface over a global field $k$. We prove that a Brauer-Manin obstruction to the existence of $k$-points on $X$ will persist over every extension $L/k$ with degree relatively prime to $3$. In other words, a cubic surface has nonempty Brauer set over $k$ if and only if it has nonempty Brauer set over some extension $L/k$ with $3\nmid[L:k]$. Therefore, the conjecture of Colliot-Thélène and Sansuc on the sufficiency of the Brauer-Manin obstruction for cubic surfaces implies that $X$ has a $k$-rational point if and only if $X$ has a $0$-cycle of degree $1$. This latter statement is a special case of a conjecture of Cassels and Swinnerton-Dyer.

Abelian $n$-division fields of elliptic curves and Brauer groups of product Kummer & abelian surfaces

Let $Y$ be a principal homogeneous space of an abelian surface, or a K3 surface, over a finitely generated extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. In 2008, Skorobogatov and Zarhin showed that the Brauer group modulo algebraic classes $\text{Br}\, Y/ \text{Br}_1\, Y$ is finite. We study this quotient for the family of surfaces that are geometrically isomorphic to a product of isogenous non-CM elliptic curves, as well as the related family of geometrically Kummer surfaces; both families can be characterized by their geometric Néron-Severi lattices. Over a field of characteristic $0$, we prove that the existence of a strong uniform bound on the size of the odd-torsion of $\text{Br}\, Y / \text{Br}_1\, Y$ is equivalent to the existence of a strong uniform bound on integers $n$ for which there exist non-CM elliptic curves with abelian $n$-division fields. Using the same methods we show that, for a fixed prime $p$, a number field $k$ of fixed degree $r$, and a fixed discriminant of the geometric Néron-Severi lattice, $(\text{Br}\, Y / \text{Br}_1\, Y)[p^\infty]$ is bounded by a constant that depends only on $p$, $r$, and the discriminant.

On the level of modular curves that give rise to isolated $j$-invariants

We say a closed point $x$ on a curve $C$ is sporadic if $C$ has only finitely many closed points of degree at most $\operatorname{deg}(x)$ and that $x$ is isolated if it is not in a family of effective degree $d$ divisors parametrized by $\mathbb{P}^1$ or a positive rank abelian variety (see Section 4 for more precise definitions and a proof that sporadic points are isolated). Motivated by well-known classification problems concerning rational torsion of elliptic curves, we study sporadic and isolated points on the modular curves $X_1(N)$. In particular, we show that any non-cuspidal non-CM sporadic, respectively isolated, point $x \in X_1(N)$ maps down to a sporadic, respectively isolated, point on a modular curve $X_1(d)$, where $d$ is bounded by a constant depending only on $j(x)$. Conditionally, we show that $d$ is bounded by a constant depending only on the degree of $\mathbb{Q}(j(x))$, so in particular there are only finitely many $j$-invariants of bounded degree that give rise to sporadic or isolated points.

Degree and the Brauer-Manin obstruction

Let X be a smooth variety over a number field k embedded as a degree d subvariety of $\mathbb{P}^n$ and suppose that X is a counterexample to the Hasse principle explained by the Brauer-Manin obstruction. We consider the question of whether the obstruction is given by the d-primary subgroup of the Brauer group, which would have both theoretic and algorithmic implications. We prove that this question has a positive answer in the case of torsors under abelian varieties, Kummer surfaces and (conditional on finiteness of Tate-Shafarevich groups) bielliptic surfaces. For Kummer varieties we show that the obstruction is already given by the 2-primary torsion. We construct a conic bundle over an elliptic curve that shows that, in general, the answer is no.

The d-primary Brauer-Manin obstruction for Curves

For a curve over a global field we consider for which integers d the d-primary part of the Brauer group can obstruct the existence of rational points. We give examples showing it is possible that there is a d-primary obstruction for infinitely many relatively coprime d, and also an example where the odd part of the Brauer group does not obstruct although there is a Brauer-Manin obstruction. These examples demonstrate that a slightly stronger form of a conjecture of Poonen is false, despite being supported by the same heuristic.

On singular moduli for arbitrary discriminants

Let d1 and d2 be discriminants of distinct quadratic imaginary orders O_d1 and O_d2 and let J(d1,d2) denote the product of differences of CM j-invariants with discriminants d1 and d2. In 1985, Gross and Zagier gave an elegant formula for the factorization of the integer J(d1,d2) in the case that d1 and d2 are relatively prime and discriminants of maximal orders. To compute this formula, they first reduce the problem to counting the number of simultaneous embeddings of O_d1 and O_d2 into endomorphism rings of supersingular curves, and then solve this counting problem. Interestingly, this counting problem also appears when computing class polynomials for invariants of genus 2 curves. However, in this application, one must consider orders O_d1 and O_d2 that are non-maximal. Motivated by the application to genus 2 curves, we generalize the methods of Gross and Zagier and give a computable formula for v_p(J(d1,d2)) for any distinct pair of discriminants d1,d2 and any prime p>2. In the case that d1 is squarefree and d2 is the discriminant of any quadratic imaginary order, our formula can be stated in a simple closed form. We also give a conjectural closed formula when the conductors of d1 and d2 are relatively prime.

An arithmetic intersection formula for denominators of Igusa class polynomials

In this paper we prove an explicit formula for the arithmetic intersection number (CM(K).G1)_{\ell} on the Siegel moduli space of abelian surfaces, generalizing the work of Bruinier-Yang and Yang. These intersection numbers allow one to compute the denominators of Igusa class polynomials, which has important applications to the construction of genus 2 curves for use in cryptography. Bruinier and Yang conjectured a formula for intersection numbers on an arithmetic Hilbert modular surface, and as a consequence obtained a conjectural formula for the intersection number (CM(K).G1)_{\ell} under strong assumptions on the ramification of the primitive quartic CM field K. Yang later proved this conjecture assuming that O_K is freely generated by one element over the ring of integers of the real quadratic subfield. In this paper, we prove a formula for (CM(K).G1)_{\ell} for more general primitive quartic CM fields, and we use a different method of proof than Yang. We prove a tight bound on this intersection number which holds for all primitive quartic CM fields. As a consequence, we obtain a formula for a multiple of the denominators of the Igusa class polynomials for an arbitrary primitive quartic CM field. Our proof entails studying the Embedding Problem posed by Goren and Lauter and counting solutions using our previous article that generalized work of Gross-Zagier and Dorman to arbitrary discriminants.

Insufficiency of the Brauer-Manin obstruction for Enriques surfaces

In 2011, Vàrilly-Alvarado and the last author constructed an Enriques surface $X$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with an étale-Brauer obstruction to the Hasse principle and no algebraic Brauer-Manin obstruction. In this paper, we show that the nontrivial Brauer class of $X_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ does not descend to $\mathbb{Q}$. Together with the results of Vàrilly-Alvarado and the last author, this proves that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is insufficient to explain all failures of the Hasse principle on Enriques surfaces. The methods of this paper build on the ideas in several recent papers by the last author and various collaborators: we study geometrically unramified Brauer classes on $X$ via pullback of ramified Brauer classes on a rational surface. Notably, we develop techniques which work over fields which are not necessarily separably closed, in particular, over number fields.

On Brauer groups of double covers of ruled surfaces

Let X be a smooth double cover of a geometrically ruled surface defined over a separably closed field of characteristic different from 2. The main result of this paper is a finite presentation of the 2-torsion in the Brauer group of X with generators given by central simple algebras over the function field of X and relations coming from the Néron-Severi group of X. In particular, the result gives a central simple algebra representative for the unique nontrivial Brauer class on any Enriques surface. An example demonstrating the applications to the study of rational points is given.
