Long-time nonlinear dynamical evolution for P-band ultracold atoms in an optical lattice

We report the long-time nonlinear dynamical evolution of ultracold atomic gases in the P-band of an optical lattice. A Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is fast and efficiently loaded into the Pband at zero quasi-momentum with a non-adiabatic shortcut method. For the first one and half milliseconds, these momentum states undergo oscillations due to coherent superposition of different bands, which are followed by oscillations up to 60ms of a much longer period. Our analysis shows the dephasing from the nonlinear interaction is very conducive to the long-period oscillations induced by the variable force due to the harmonic confinement.

Interaction Effects on Wannier Functions for Bosons in Optical Lattice

We have numerically calculated the single band Wannier functions for interacting Bose gases in optical lattices with a self-consistent approach. We find that the Wannier function is broadened by repulsive atom interaction. The tunneling parameter J and on-site interaction U computed with the broadened Wannier functions are found to change significantly for different atomic number per site. Our theory can explain the nonuniform atomic clock shift observed in [Campbell et al., Science 313, 649 (2006)].

Hierarchical Theory of Quantum Adiabatic Evolution

Quantum adiabatic evolution is a dynamical evolution of a quantum system under slow external driving. According to the quantum adiabatic theorem, no transitions occur between non-degenerate instantaneous eigen-energy levels in such a dynamical evolution. However, this is true only when the driving rate is infinitesimally small. For a small nonzero driving rate, there are generally small transition probabilities between the energy levels. We develop a classical mechanics framework to address the small deviations from the quantum adiabatic theorem order by order. A hierarchy of Hamiltonians are constructed iteratively with the zeroth-order Hamiltonian being determined by the original system Hamiltonian. The $k$th-order deviations are governed by a $k$th-order Hamiltonian, which depends on the time derivatives of the adiabatic parameters up to the $k$th-order. Two simple examples, the Landau-Zener model and a spin-1/2 particle in a rotating magnetic field, are used to illustrate our hierarchical theory. Our analysis also exposes a deep, previously unknown connection between classical adiabatic theory and quantum adiabatic theory.

Entropy for Quantum Pure States and Its Dynamical Relaxation

We construct a complete set of Wannier functions which are localized at both given positions and momenta. This allows us to introduce the quantum phase space, onto which a quantum pure state can be mapped unitarily. Using its probability distribution in quantum phase space, we define an entropy for a quantum pure state. We prove an inequality regarding the long time behavior of our entropy's fluctuation. For a typical initial state, this inequality indicates that our entropy can relax dynamically to a maximized value and stay there most of time with small fluctuations. This result echoes the quantum H-theorem proved by von Neumann in [Zeitschrift für Physik {\bf 57}, 30 (1929)]. Our entropy is different from the standard von Neumann entropy, which is always zero for quantum pure states. According to our definition, a system always has bigger entropy than its subsystem even when the system is described by a pure state. As the construction of the Wannier basis can be implemented numerically, the dynamical evolution of our entropy is illustrated with an example.

Superfluidity of Bose-Einstein condensates in ultracold atomic gases

Liquid helium 4 had been the only bosonic superfluid available in experiments for a long time. This situation was changed in 1995, when a new superfluid was born with the realization of the Bose-Einstein condensation in ultracold atomic gases. The liquid helium 4 is strongly interacting and has no spin; there is almost no way to change its parameters, such as interaction strength and density. The new superfluid, Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), offers various aspects of advantages over liquid helium. On the one hand, BEC is weakly interacting and has spin degrees of freedom. On the other hand, it is convenient to tune almost all the parameters of a BEC, for example, the kinetic energy by spin-orbit coupling, the density by the external potential, and the interaction by Feshbach resonance. Great efforts have been devoted to studying these new aspects of superfluidity, and the results have greatly enriched our understanding of superfluidity. Here we review these developments by focusing on the stability and critical velocity of various superfluids. The BEC systems considered include a uniform superfluid in free space, a superfluid with its density periodically modulated, a superfluid with artificially engineered spin-orbit coupling, and a superfluid of pure spin current. Due to the weak interaction, these BEC systems can be well described by the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii theory and their superfluidity, in particular critical velocities, can be examined with Landau's theory of superfluid. Experimental proposals to observe these new aspects of superfluidity are discussed.

Superfluidity of pure spin current in ultracold Bose gases

We study the superfluidity of a pure spin current that is a spin current without mass current. We examine two types of pure spin currents, planar and circular, in spin-1 Bose gas. For the planar current, it is usually unstable, but can be stabilized by the quadratic Zeeman effect. The circular current can be generated with spin-orbit coupling. When the spin-orbit coupling strength is weak, we find that the circular pure spin current is the ground state of the system and thus a super-flow. We discuss the experimental schemes to realize and detect a pure spin current.

Dark Solitons with Majorana Fermions in Spin-Orbit-Coupled Fermi Gases

We show that a single dark soliton can exist in a spin-orbit-coupled Fermi gas with a high spin imbalance, where spin-orbit coupling favors uniform superfluids over non-uniform Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states, leading to dark soliton excitations in highly imbalanced gases. Above a critical spin imbalance, two topological Majorana fermions (MFs) without interactions can coexist inside a dark soliton, paving a way for manipulating MFs through controlling solitons. At the topological transition point, the atom density contrast across the soliton suddenly vanishes, suggesting a signature for identifying topological solitons.

Extended Bose-Hubbard model with pair tunneling: spontaneous symmetry breaking, effective ground state and fragmentation

The extended Bose-Hubbard model for a double-well potential with pair tunneling is studied through both exact diagonalization and mean field theory (MFT). When pair tunneling is strong enough, the ground state wavefunction predicted by the MFT is complex and doubly degenerate while the quantum ground state wavefunction is always real and unique. The time reversal symmetry is spontaneously broken when the system transfers from the quantum ground state into one of the mean field ground states upon a small perturbation. As the gap between the lowest two levels decreases exponentially with particle number, the required perturbation inducing the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) is infinitesimal for particle number of typical cold atom systems. The quantum ground state is further analyzed with the Penrose-Onsager criterion, and is found to be a fragmented condensate. The state also develops the pair correlation and has non-vanishing pair order parameter instead of the conventional single particle order parameter. When this model is generalized to optical lattice, a pair superfluid can be generated. The mean field ground state can be regarded as effective ground state in this simple model. The detailed computation for this model enables us to offer an in-depth discussion of the relation between SSB and effective ground state, giving a glimpse on how nonlinearity arises in the SSB of a quantum system.

$p$-wave chiral superfluidity from an $s$-wave interacting atomic Fermi gas

Chiral $p$-wave superfluids are fascinating topological quantum states of matter that have been found in the liquid $^3$He-A phase and arguably in the electronic Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ superconductor. They are shown fundamentally related to the fractional $5/2$ quantum Hall state which supports fractional exotic excitations. A common understanding is that such states require spin-triplet pairing of fermions due to $p$-wave interaction. Here we report by controlled theoretical approximation that a center-of-mass Wannier $p$-wave chiral superfluid state can arise from spin-singlet pairing for an $s$-wave interacting atomic Fermi gas in an optical lattice. Despite a conceptually different origin, it shows topological properties similar to the conventional chiral $p$-wave state. These include a non-zero Chern number and the appearance of chiral fermionic zero modes bounded to domain walls. Several signature quantities are calculated for the cold atom experimental condition.

Cavity-Assisted Dynamical Spin-Orbit Coupling in Cold Atoms

We consider ultracold atoms subjected to a cavity-assisted two-photon Raman transition. The Raman coupling gives rise to effective spin-orbit interaction which couples atom's center-of-mass motion to its pseudospin degrees of freedom. Meanwhile, the cavity photon is dynamically affected by the atom. This feedback between atom and photon leads to a dramatic modification of the atomic dispersion relation, and further leads to dynamical instability of the system. We propose to detect the change of cavity photon number as a direct way to demonstrate dynamical instability.

Quantum thermalization and equilibrium state with multiple temperatures

A large class of isolated quantum system in a pure state can equilibrate and serve as a heat bath. We show that once the equilibrium is reached, any of its subsystems that is much smaller than the isolated system is thermalized such that the subsystem is governed by the Gibbs distribution. Within this theoretical framework, the celebrated superposition principle of quantum mechanics leads to a prediction of a thermalized subsystem with multiple temperatures when the isolated system is in a superposition state of energy eigenstates of multiple distinct energy scales. This multiple-temperature state is at equilibrium, completely different from a non-equilibrium state that has multiple temperatures at different parts. Feasible experimental schemes to verify this prediction are discussed.

Equilibration of quantum chaotic systems

Quantum ergordic theorem for a large class of quantum systems was proved by von Neumann [Z. Phys. {\bf 57}, 30 (1929)] and again by Reimann [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 101}, 190403 (2008)] in a more practical and well-defined form. However, it is not clear whether the theorem applies to quantum chaotic systems. With the rigorous proof still elusive, we illustrate and verify this theorem for quantum chaotic systems with examples. Our numerical results show that a quantum chaotic system with an initial low-entropy state will dynamically relax to a high-entropy state and reach equilibrium. The quantum equilibrium state reached after dynamical relaxation bears a remarkable resemblance to the classical micro-canonical ensemble. However, the fluctuations around equilibrium are distinct: the quantum fluctuations are exponential while the classical fluctuations are Gaussian.

Coherent Destruction of Tunneling and Dark Floquet State

We study a system of three coherently coupled states, where one state is shifted periodically against the other two. We discover such a system possesses a dark Floquet state at zero quasienergy and always with negligible population at the intermediate state. This dark Floquet state manifests itself dynamically in terms of the suppression of inter-state tunneling, a phenomenon known as coherent destruction of tunneling. We suggest to call it dark coherent destruction of tunneling (DCDT). At high frequency limit for the periodic driving, this Floquet state reduces to the well-known dark state widely used for STIRAP. Our results can be generalized to systems with more states and can be verified with easily implemented experiments within current technologies.

Critical correlations in an ultracold Bose gas revealed by means of a temporal Talbot-Lau interferometer

We study experimentally the critical correlation in an ultra-cold Bose gas with a temporal Talbot-Lau (TL) interferometer. Near the critical temperature, we observe a bi-modal density distribution in an ultra-cold Bose gas after the application of the TL interferometer. The measured fraction of the narrower peak in the density distribution displays a clear peak within the critical regime. The peak position agrees with the critical temperature calculated with the finite-size and interaction corrections. The critical exponents are extracted from the peak and they agree with the critical exponents for the correlation length.

Hydrogen atom as a quantum-classical hybrid system

Hydrogen atom is studied as a quantum-classical hybrid system, where the proton is treated as a classical object while the electron is regarded as a quantum object. We use a well known mean-field approach to describe this hybrid hydrogen atom; the resulting dynamics for the electron and the proton is compared to their full quantum dynamics. The electron dynamics in the hybrid description is found to be only marginally different from its full quantum counterpart. The situation is very different for the proton: in the hybrid description, the proton behaves like a free particle; in the fully quantum description, the wave packet center of the proton orbits around the center of mass. Furthermore, we find that the failure to describe the proton dynamics properly can be regarded as a manifestation of the fact that there is no conservation of momentum in the mean-field hybrid approach. We expect that such a failure is a common feature for all existing approaches for quantum-classical hybrid systems of Born-Oppenheimer type.

Superfluidity and Stabilities of a Bose-Einstein condensate with periodically modulated interatomic interaction

We study theoretically the superfluidity and stability of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) whose interatomic scattering length is periodically modulated with optical Feshbach resonance. Our numerical study finds that the properties of this periodic BEC are strongly influenced by the modulation strength. When the modulation strength is small, only the Bloch waves close to the Brillouin zone edge suffer both Landau and dynamical instabilities. When the modulation strength is strong enough, all Bloch waves become dynamically unstable. In other words, the periodic BEC loses its superfluidity completely.

Stability of $p$-orbital Bose-Einstein condensates in optical checkerboard and square lattices

We investigate $p$-orbital Bose-Einstein condensates in both the square and checkerboard lattice by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The periodic potential for the latter lattice is taken exactly from the recent experiment [Nature Phys. 7, 147 (2011)]. It is confirmed that the staggered orbital-current state is the lowest-energy state in the $p$ band. Our numerical calculation further reveals that for both lattices the staggered $p$-orbital state suffers Landau instability but the situation is remarkably different for dynamical instability. A dynamically stable parameter region is found for the checkerboard lattice, but not for the square.

Bright solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We study bright solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate with a spin-orbit coupling that has been realized experimentally. Both stationary bright solitons and moving bright solitons are found. The stationary bright solitons are the ground states and possess well-defined spin-parity, a symmetry involving both spatial and spin degrees of freedom; these solitons are real valued but not positive definite, and the number of their nodes depends on the strength of spin-orbit coupling. For the moving bright solitons, their shapes are found to change with velocity due to the lack of Galilean invariance in the system.
