Nonlinear coherent destruction of tunneling

We study theoretically two coupled periodically-curved optical waveguides with Kerr nonlinearity. We find that the tunneling between the waveguides can be suppressed in a wide range of parameters due to nonlinearity. Such suppression of tunneling is different from the coherent destruction of tunneling in a linear medium, which occurs only at the isolated degeneracy point of the quasienergies. We call this novel suppression nonlinear coherent destruction of tunneling.

Bragg spectroscopy of a superfluid Bose-Hubbard gas

Bragg spectroscopy is used to measure excitations of a trapped, quantum-degenerate gas of 87Rb atoms in a 3-dimensional optical lattice. The measurements are carried out over a range of optical lattice depths in the superfluid phase of the Bose-Hubbard model. For fixed wavevector, the resonant frequency of the excitation is found to decrease with increasing lattice depth. A numerical calculation of the resonant frequencies based on Bogoliubov theory shows a less steep rate of decrease than the measurements.

Interacting Agent Feedback Finance Model

We consider a financial market model which consists of a financial asset and a large number of interacting agents classified into many types. Different types of agents are heterogeneous in their price expectations. Each agent can change its type based on the current empirical distribution of the types and the equilibrium price, and the equilibrium price follows a recursive price mechanism based on the previous price and the current empirical distribution of the types. The interaction among the agents, and the interaction between the agents and the equilibrium price, feedback, are modeled. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the empirical distribution of the types and the equilibrium price when the number of agents goes to infinity. We give a case study of a simple example, and also investigate the fixed points of empirical distribution and equilibrium price of the example.

Critical velocities for a superfluid in a periodic potential

In contrast to the homogeneous superfluid which has only one critical velocity, there exist two critical velocities for a superfluid in a periodic potential. The first one, which we call inside critical velocity, is for a macroscopic impurity to move frictionlessly in the periodic superfluid system; the second, which is called trawler critical velocity, is the largest velocity of the lattice relative to the lab frame for the superfluidity to maintain. The results are relevant to the superfluidity observed in the Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice and supersolid helium.

Ground states of hard-core bosons in one dimensional periodic potentials

With Girardeau's Fermi-Bose mapping, we find the exact ground states of hard-core bosons residing in a one dimensional periodic potential. The analysis of these ground states shows that when the number of bosons $N$ is commensurate with the number of wells $M$ in the periodic potential, the boson system is a Mott insulator whose energy gap, however, is given by the single-particle band gap of the periodic potential; when $N$ is not commensurate with $M$, the system is a metal (not a superfluid). In fact, we argue that there may be no superfluid phase for any one-dimensional boson system in terms of Landau's criterion of superfluidity. The Kronig-Penney potential is used to illustrate our results.

Multiagent models in time-varying and random environment

In this paper we study multiagent models with time-varying type change. Assume that there exist a closed system of $N$ agents classified into $r$ types according to their states of an internal system; each agent changes its type by an internal dynamics of the internal states or by the relative frequency of different internal states among the others, e.g., multinomial sampling. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the empirical distributions of the agents' types as $N$ goes to infinity, by the weak convergence criteria for time-inhomogeneous Markov processes and the theory of Volterra integral equations of the second kind. We also prove convergence theorems of these models evolving in random environment.

Vector Potential and Berry phase-induced Force

We present a general theoretical framework for the exact treatment of a hybrid system that is composed of a quantum subsystem and a classical subsystem. When the quantum subsystem is dynamically fast and the classical subsystem is slow, a vector potential is generated with a simple canonical transformation. This vector potential, on one hand, gives rise to the familiar Berry phase in the fast quantum dynamics; on the other hand, it yields a Lorentz-like force in the slow classical dynamics. In this way, the pure phase (Berry phase) of a wavefunction is linked to a physical force.

Self-trapping of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

The self-trapping phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in optical lattices is studied extensively by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Our numerical results not only reproduce the phenomenon that was observed in a recent experiment [Anker {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 94} (2005)020403], but also find that the self-trapping breaks down at long evolution times, that is, the self-trapping in optical lattices is only temporary. The analysis of our numerical results shows that the self-trapping in optical lattices is related to the self-trapping of BECs in a double-well potential. A possible mechanism of the formation of steep edges in the wave packet evolution is explored in terms of the dynamics of relative phases between neighboring wells.

Commutability between Semiclassical Limit and Adiabatic Limit

We study the semiclassical limit and the adiabatic limit with a second-quantized two-mode model, which describes a many-boson interacting system. When its mean-field interaction is small, these two limits are commutable. However, when the interaction is strong and over a critical value, the two limits become incommutable. This change of commutability is associated with a topological change in the structure of the energy bands. These results reveal that nonlinear mean-field theories, such as Gross-Pitaevskii equations for Bose-Einstein condensates, can be invalid in the adiabatic limit.

Adiabatic Geometric Phase for a General Quantum States

A geometric phase is found for a general quantum state that undergoes adiabatic evolution. For the case of eigenstates, it reduces to the original Berry's phase. Such a phase is applicable in both linear and nonlinear quantum systems. Furthermore, this new phase is related to Hannay's angles as we find that these angles, a classical concept, can arise naturally in quantum systems. The results are demonstrated with a two-level model.

Direct extraction of the Eliashberg function for electron-phonon coupling: A case study of Be(1010)

We propose a systematic procedure to directly extract the Eliashberg function for electron-phonon coupling from high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission data. The procedure is successfully applied to the Be(1010) surface, providing new insights to electron-phonon coupling at this surface. The method is shown to be robust against imperfections in experimental data and suitable for wider applications.

To detect the looped Bloch bands of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

A loop structure was predicted to exist in the Bloch bands of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices recently in [{\it Wu and Niu, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 61}, 023402 (2000)}]. We discuss how to detect experimentally the looped band with an accelerating optical lattice through extensive and realistic numerical simulations. We find that the loop can be detected through observing either nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling or destruction of Bloch oscillations.

Superfluidity of Bose-Einstein Condensate in An Optical Lattice: Landau-Zener Tunneling and Dynamical Instability

Superflow of Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice is represented by a Bloch wave, a plane wave with periodic modulation of the amplitude. We review the theoretical results on the interaction effects in the energy dispersion of the Bloch waves and in the linear stability of such waves. For sufficiently strong repulsion between the atoms, the lowest Bloch band develops a loop at the edge of the Brillouin zone, with the dramatic consequence of a finite probability of Landau-Zener tunneling even in the limit of a vanishing external force. Superfluidity can exist in the central region of the Brillouin zone in the presence of a repulsive interaction, beyond which Landau instability takes place where the system can lower its energy by making transition into states with smaller Bloch wavenumbers. In the outer part of the region of Landau instability, the Bloch waves are also dynamically unstable in the sense that a small initial deviation grows exponentially in time. In the inner region of Landau instability, a Bloch wave is dynamically stable in the absence of persistent external perturbations. Experimental implications of our findings will be discussed.

A transformation is found between the one dimensional Schroedinger equation and a pendulum problem. It is demonstrated how to construct exact solutions with the resulted pendulum equation. The relation of this transformation to the Zakharov-Shabat equations is pointed out.

Entanglement generation and multiparticle interferometry with neutral atoms

We study the preparation and manipulation of states involving a small number of interacting particles. By controlling the splitting and fusing of potential wells, we show how to interconvert Mott-insulator-like and trapped BEC-like states. We also discuss the generation of "Schrödinger cat" states by splitting a microtrap and taking into practical consideration the asymmetry between the resulting wells. These schemes can be used to perform multiparticle interferometry with neutral atoms, where interference effects can be observed only when all the participating particles are measured.

Surface Phase Transitions Induced by Electron Mediated Adatom-Adatom Interaction

We propose that the indirect adatom-adatom interaction mediated by the conduction electrons of a metallic surface is responsible for the $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}\Leftrightarrow 3\times 3$ structural phase transitions observed in Sn/Ge (111) and Pb/Ge (111). When the indirect interaction overwhelms the local stress field imposed by the substrate registry, the system suffers a phonon instability, resulting in a structural phase transition in the adlayer. Our theory is capable of explaining all the salient features of the $\sqrt{3}\times \sqrt{3}\Leftrightarrow 3\times 3$ transitions observed in Sn/Ge (111) and Pb/Ge (111), and is in principle applicable to a wide class of systems whose surfaces are metallic before the transition.

Adiabatic Theory of Nonlinear Evolution of Quantum States

We present a general theory for adiabatic evolution of quantum states as governed by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, and provide examples of applications with a nonlinear tunneling model for Bose-Einstein condensates. Our theory not only spells out conditions for adiabatic evolution of eigenstates, but also characterizes the motion of non-eigenstates which cannot be obtained from the former in the absence of the superposition principle. We find that in the adiabatic evolution of non-eigenstates, the Aharonov-Anandan phases play the role of classical canonical actions.

A Quantum Tweezer for Atoms

We propose a quantum tweezer for extracting a desired number of neutral atoms from a reservoir. A trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is used as the reservoir, taking advantage of its coherent nature, which can guarantee a constant outcome. The tweezer is an attractive quantum dot, which may be generated by red-detuned laser light. By moving with certain speeds, the dot can extract a desired number of atoms from the BEC through Landau-Zener tunneling. The feasibility of our quantum tweezer is demonstrated through realistic and extensive model calculations.
