Scalar fluid in scalar-tensor gravity from an equivalent picture of thermodynamic and fluid descriptions of gravitational dynamics

We revisit the thermodynamic description of fluid, represented by scalar field in scalar-tensor gravity theory through a general approach to study the thermodynamics of relativistic fluids. In order to identify the fluid energy-momentum tensor, contrary to the existing way, we use equivalent description of gravitational dynamics both in Jordan and Einstein frames as thermodynamical identity and fluid equation on a generic null surface. Such an approach provides the energy-momentum tensors for scalar fluid as that of an ideal fluid in both the frames. We then mention few issues in the existing way of using Eckart's formalism for an ideal fluid. Our investigation suggests that the Eckart's frame may not be suitable to consider ideal fluid. Consequently a possible alternative description, valid in other than Eckart's frame, is being suggested for a general ideal fluid. Based on this we obtain a unified thermodynamic description in both Jordan and Einstein frames from our identified energy-momentum tensors. Finally, the relations between thermodynamic entities on different frames are being put forwarded. Thus, the description in either of the frames is enough to provide the complete picture.

Shadow of quantum extended Kruskal black hole and its super-radiance property

We perform the shadow calculation of the loop quantum gravity motivated regular black hole recently proposed by Ashtekar, Olmedo and Singh (will be termed AOS black hole hereafter). In the process, we also construct the rotating loop quantum gravity inspired solution of the originally proposed static spherically symmetric AOS black hole by applying the modified Newman-Janis algorithm. We study the quantum effects on the shadows of both the non-rotating and rotating loop quantum black hole solutions. It is observed that the general shape of the shadow for non-rotating AOS black hole is circular in shape as is expected for its classical counter part too, but the presence of loop quantum gravity inspired modification contracts the shadow radius and the effect reduces with the increase in the mass of the black hole. On a similar note, in the rotating situation, we find contraction in shadow radius due to quantum effects and the tapered nature of the shadow as expected from the classical Kerr case. However, instead of the symmetrical contraction, like non-rotating one, we found more contraction on one side relative to the other when we compare our result with the shadow of the Kerr black hole. We finally studied super-radiance in rotating AOS background and observed that the super-radiance condition for massless scalar field is identical to that of the Kerr case with the rotation of the BH being more compared to Kerr in the low mass regime. With an increase in mass of the rotating AOS black hole, the difference from Kerr starts to become insignificant.

Spontaneous entanglement leakage of two static entangled Unruh-DeWitt detectors

Two entangled two-level Unruh-DeWitt detectors, which are in rest, spontaneously loose entanglement when at least any one of them is not isolated from the environment quantum fields. For eternal interaction between the detectors and environment, the spontaneous emission from the detectors' exited states and vacuum fluctuations of field influence this negative effect. Consequently, it suggests that two entangled qubits become less communicated during their free-fall towards the black hole horizon.

Unruh-Fulling effect in nonlocal field theory: The role of Unruh decomposition

We investigate the Unruh-Fulling effect in a class of nonlocal field theories by examining both the number operator and Unruh-DeWitt detector methods. Unlike in previous literature, we use Unruh quantization to quantize the matter field. Such choice, as oppose to standard Minkowski decomposition, naturally incorporates the time translational invariance in the positive frequency Wightman function and thus captures the thermal equilibrium of the system. We analyze the Unruh-Fulling effect for a massless real scalar field in both the Lorentz noninvariant and Lorentz invariant nonlocal theories. In Lorentz noninvariant nonlocal theory, the expectation value of number operator and the response function of the detector are modified by an overall multiplicative factor. Whereas in Lorentz invariant nonlocal theory these quantities remain identical to those of the standard Unruh-Fulling effect. The temperature of the thermal bath remains unaltered for both the Lorentz noninvariant and Lorentz invariant nonlocal theories. Therefore, in terms of temperature, the nonlocal Unruh-Fulling effect is universal while it is derived via Unruh quantization, whereas the transition rate may be modified.

Possible fluid interpretation and tidal force equation on a generic null hypersurface in Einstein-Cartan theory

The dynamical evolution of the Hajicek $1$-form is derived in Einstein-Cartan (EC) theory. We find that like Einstein theory of gravity, the evolution equation is related to a projected part of the Einstein tensor $(\hat{G}_{ab})$ on a generic null surface $\mathcal{H}$, particularly $\hat{G}_{ab}l^a q^b_{~c}$, where $l^a$ and $q^a_{~c}$ are the outgoing null generators of $\mathcal{H}$ and the induced metric to a transverse spatial cross-section of $\mathcal{H}$ respectively. Under the {\it geodesic constraint} a possible fluid interpretation of this evolution equation is then proposed. We find that it has the structure which is reminiscent to the {\it Cosserat generalization} of the Navier-Stokes fluid provided we express the dynamical evolution equation of the Hajicek $1$-form in a set of coordinates adapted to $\mathcal{H}$ and in a local inertial frame. An analogous viewpoint can also be built under the motive that the usual material derivative for fluids should be replaced by the Lie derivative. Finally, the tidal force equation in EC theory on the null surface is also derived.

Kinematics and dynamics of null hypersurfaces in the Einstein-Cartan spacetime and related thermodynamic interpretation

A general geometric construction of a generic null hypersurface in presence of torsion in the spacetime (Riemann-Cartan background), generated by a null vector $l^a$, is being developed here. We then explicitly define and structure various corresponding kinematical quantities. The dynamics of the null surface, particularly given by $\hat{G}_{ab}k^al^b$, is also discussed. The later one is constructed under the {\it geodesic constraint} condition. This yields a relation among the rate of change of expansion scalar corresponding to auxiliary null vector $k^a$ and various kinematical entities on the null surface. Using this relation we show that the Einstein-Cartan-Kibble-Sciama equation (which provides the dynamics of the metric and the torsion tensor) on this null hypersurface acquires a thermodynamic interpretation. The thermodynamic entities like temperature, entropy density, energy and pressure are properly identified. In the whole analysis we adopt the geometrical field interpretation of torsion and all discussions are done in a covariant manner.

Properties of accretion flow in deformed Kerr spacetime

We study the properties of a low-angular momentum, inviscid, advective accretion flow in a deformed Kerr spacetime under the framework of general theory of relativity. We solve the governing equations that describe the flow motion in terms of input parameters, namely energy ($E$), angular momentum ($λ$), spin ($a_{\rm k}$) and deformation parameter ($\varepsilon$), respectively. We find that global transonic accretion solutions continue to exist in non-Kerr spacetime. Depending on the input parameters, accretion flow is seen to experience shock transition and we find that shocked induced accretion solutions are available for a wide range of the parameter space in $λ-E$ plane. We examine the modification of the shock parameter space with $\varepsilon$, and find that as $\varepsilon$ is increased, the effective region of the parameter space is reduced, and gradually shifted towards the higher $λ$ and lower $E$ domain. In addition, for the first time in the literature, we notice that accretion flow having zero angular momentum admits shock transition when spacetime deformation is significantly large. Interestingly, beyond a critical limit of $\varepsilon^{\rm max}$, the nature of the central object alters from black hole (BH) to naked singularity (NS) and we identify $\varepsilon^{\rm max}$ as function of $a_{\rm k}$. Further, we examine the accretion solutions and its properties around the naked singularity as well. Finally, we indicate the implications of the present formalism in the context of astrophysical applications.

Entanglement harvesting from conformal vacuums between two Unruh-DeWitt detectors moving along null paths

It is well-known that the $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild and spatially flat FLRW spacetimes are conformally flat. This work examines entanglement harvesting from the conformal field vacuums in these spacetimes between two Unruh-DeWitt detectors, moving along outgoing null trajectories. In $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime, we considered the Boulware and Unruh vacuums for our investigations. In this analysis, one observes that while entanglement harvesting is possible in $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild and $(1+3)$ dimensional de Sitter spacetimes, it is not possible in the $(1+1)$ dimensional de Sitter background for the same set of parameters when the detectors move along the same outgoing null trajectory. The qualitative results from the Boulware and the Unruh vacuums are alike. Furthermore, we observed that the concurrence depends on the distance $d$ between the two null paths of the detectors periodically, and depending on the parameter values, there could be entanglement harvesting shadow points or regions. We also observe that the mutual information does not depend on $d$ in $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild and de Sitter spacetimes but periodically depends on it in $(1+3)$ dimensional de Sitter background. We also provide elucidation on the origin of the harvested entanglement.

Scalar-tensor gravity from thermodynamic and fluid-gravity perspective

Out of several possible extensions of general relativity, the scalar-tensor theory is the most popular for several reasons. Since the quantum description of gravity is yet to be formulated properly, the understanding of a gravitational theory remains incomplete until the study of thermodynamic and fluid-gravity aspects, which provides an alternative viewpoint to understand the gravitational theory. In this review, we study these features (thermodynamics and the fluid gravity analogy) in a rigorous and yet in a concise manner for the scalar-tensor gravity, which has been revealed in our recent works. In addition, the issue of conformally connected frames (\textit{i.e.} whether the two frames, which are conformally related are physically equivalent) has been explored in an explicit manner at the action level as well as from the viewpoint of thermodynamics and fluid-gravity correspondence.

Is instability near a black hole key for "thermalization'' of its horizon?

We put forward an attempt towards building a possible theoretical model to understand the observer dependent thermalization of black hole horizon. The near horizon Hamiltonian for a massless, chargeless particle is $xp$ type. This is unstable in nature and so the horizon can induce instability in a system. The particle in turn finds the horizon thermal when it interacts with it. We explicitly show this in the Schrodinger as well as in Heisenberg pictures by taking into account the time evolution of the system under this Hamiltonian. Hence we postulate that existing instability near the horizon can be one of the potential candidates for explaining the black hole thermalization.

Entanglement harvesting between two inertial Unruh-DeWitt detectors from non-vacuum quantum fluctuations

Entanglement harvesting from the quantum field is a well-known fact that, in recent times, is being rigorously investigated further in flat and different curved backgrounds. The usually understood formulation studies the possibility of two uncorrelated Unruh-DeWitt detectors getting entangled over time due to the effects of quantum vacuum fluctuations. Our current work presents a thorough formulation to realize the entanglement harvesting from non-vacuum background fluctuations. In particular, we further consider single excitation field states and a pair of inertial detectors, respectively, in $(1+1)$ and $(1+3)$ dimensions for this investigation. Our main observation asserts that entanglement harvesting is suppressed compared to the vacuum fluctuations in this situation. Our other observations confirm a non-zero individual detector transition probability in this background and vanishing entanglement harvesting for parallel co-moving detectors. We look into the characteristics of the harvested entanglement and discuss its dependence on different system parameters.

Constructing an entangled Unruh Otto engine and its efficiency

Uniformly accelerated frame mimics a thermal bath whose temperature is proportional to the proper acceleration. Using this phenomenon we give a detailed construction of an Otto cycle between two energy eigenstates of a system, consists of two entangled qubits. In the isochoric stages the thermal bath is being provided via the vacuum fluctuations of the background field for a monopole interaction by accelerating them. We find that making of Otto cycle is possible when one qubit is accelerating in the right Rindler wedge and other one is moving in the left Rindler wedge; i.e. in anti-parallel motion, with the initial composite state is a non-maximally entangled one. However, the efficiency greater than that of the usual single qubit quantum Otto engine is not possible. We provide values of the available parameters which make Otto cycle possible. On the other hand, Otto cycle is not possible if one considers the non-maximally entangled state for parallel motion. Moreover, for both initial symmetric and anti-symmetric Bell states we do not find any possibility of the cycle for qubits' parallel and anti-parallel motion.

Fate of entanglement between two Unruh-DeWitt detectors due to their motion and background temperature

We investigate the fate of initial entanglement between two accelerated detectors with respect to an observer attached to one of the detectors. Both $(1+1)$ and $(1+3)$ spacetime dimensions are being considered here, with the detectors interacting with real massless scalar fields through monopole terms. The investigation is being performed for both non-thermal as well as thermal fields. In general, irrespective of the detectors moving in the same Rindler wedge or opposite wedges, increase of the field temperature reduces the initial entanglement. In all situations, degradation of entanglement is high for high acceleration $a_A$ of our observer. Interestingly, the degradation depends on the measure of initial entanglement. For $(1+1)$ dimensions, the degradation saturates for small values of $a_A$, whereas the same fluctuates in $(1+3)$ dimensions with the decrease of $a_A$. For motions in opposite Rindler wedges, a noticeable feature we observe in $(1+1)$ dimensions is that, depending on the strength of initial entanglement, there is a possibility of entanglement harvesting in the system for certain values of the observers' acceleration. However the same is absent in $(1+3)$ dimensions. The whole analysis is operationally different from earlier similar investigations. The thermal equilibrium is satisfied throughout the calculations here, by considering the Wightman functions with respect to the Rindler modes evaluated in the vacuum of Unruh modes, contrary to the use of Minkowski modes.

Horizon thermalization of Kerr black hole through local instability

The validity of our already proposed conjecture -- {\it horizon creates a local instability which acts as the source of the quantum temperature of black hole} -- is being tested here for Kerr black hole. Earlier this has been explicitly shown for spherically symmetric static black hole (SSS BH). The more realistic situation like Kerr spacetime, being stationary and axisymmetric, is a non-trivial example to analyze. We show that for a chargeless massless particle, the near horizon radial motion in Kerr spacetime, like SSS BH, can be locally unstable. The radial contribution in the corresponding Hamiltonian is $\sim xp$ kind, where $p$ is the canonical momentum and $x$ is its conjugate position of particle. Finally we show that the horizon thermalization can be explained through this Hamiltonian when one dose a semi-classical analysis. It again confirms that near horizon instability is liable for its own temperature and moreover generalizes the validity of our conjectured mechanism for the black hole horizon thermalization.

Thermodynamic structure of a generic null surface and the zeroth law in scalar-tensor theory

We show that the equation of motion of scalar-tensor theory acquires thermodynamic identity when projected on a generic null surface. The relevant projection is given by $E_{ab}l^ak^b$, where $E_{ab} =8πT_{ab}^{(m)}$ represents the equation motion for gravitational field in presence of external matter, $l^a$ is the generator of the null surface and $k^a$ is the corresponding auxiliary null vector. Our analysis is done completely in a covariant way. Therefore all the thermodynamic quantities are in covariant form and hence can be used for any specific form of metric adapted to a null surface. We show this both in Einstein and Jordan frames and find that these two frames provide equivalent thermodynamic quantities. This is consistent with the previous findings for a Killing horizon. Also, a concrete proof of the zeroth law in scalar-tensor theory is provided when the null surface is defined by a Killing vector.

BMS Goldstone modes near the horizon of a Kerr black hole are thermal

Near horizon Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) like symmetry is spontaneously broken by the black hole background itself and hence gives rise to Goldstone mode. The associated Goldstone mode for the near horizon BMS like symmetry of a Schwarzschild black hole was found to behave like inverted harmonic oscillators, which has been further shown to lead to thermodynamic temperature in the semi-classical regime. Here we investigate the generalization of this previous findings for the Kerr black hole. The analysis is being performed for two different situations. Firstly, we analyze Goldstone mode dynamics considering {\it slowly rotating} Kerr. In other case the problem is solved in the frame of {\it zero angular momentum observer} (ZAMO) with arbitrary value of rotation. In both analysis the effective semi-classical temperature of Goldstone modes turn out to be proportional to that of Hawking temperature. Due to such similarity and generality we feel that these Goldstone modes may play important role to understand the underlying microscopic description of horizon thermalization.

Thermal nature of a generic null surface

Dynamical properties of a generic null surface are known to have a thermodynamic interpretation. Such an interpretation is completely based on an analogy between the usual law of thermodynamics and structure of gravitational field equation on the surface. Here we materialise this analogy and show that assigning a temperature on the null surface for a local observer is indeed physically relevant. We find that for a local frame, chosen as outgoing massless chargeless particle (or field mode), perceives a "{\it local unstable Hamiltonian}" very near to the surface. Due to this it has finite quantum probability to escape through acausal null path which is given by Maxwell-Boltzmann like distribution, thereby providing a temperature on the surface.
