A Parameter-Specific Retrieval and Knowledge-Guided Reasoning Framework for LLM-Based GPSR Optimization in FANETs

Existing Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing (GPSR)-based protocols for Flying Ad-Hoc Networks (FANETs) struggle to adapt routing parameters, such as hello interval, multi-path number, and greedy forwarding weights, under highly dynamic environments. As an emerging artificial intelligence technology, large language models (LLMs) show potential for intelligent decision-making, providing new opportunities for adaptive adjustment of GPSR parameters to improve network performance. However, applying LLMs to GPSR remains challenging due to irrelevant experience retrieval and the absence of protocol constraints. To address these issues, we propose a Parameter-Specific Multi-Index Retrieval and Knowledge-Guided Reasoning framework for adaptive GPSR optimization (PMKR-GPSR), an LLM-based framework that enables protocol-consistent routing parameter adaptation. We design a parameter-specific multi-index retrieval mechanism to provide LLMs with parameter-relevant experiences while reducing interference from irrelevant information. We further construct a knowledge-guided constraint graph to enforce that the routing parameters satisfy dependency rules and optimization constraints. Simulation results demonstrate that PMKR-GPSR achieves higher packet delivery ratio and lower end-to-end delay under high-mobility FANETs.

A Heterogeneous Dual-Network Framework for Emergency Delivery UAVs: Communication Assurance and Path Planning Coordination

Natural disasters often damage ground infrastructure, making unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) essential for emergency supply delivery. Yet safe operation in complex post-disaster environments requires reliable command-and-control (C2) links; link instability can cause loss of control, delay rescue, and trigger severe secondary harm. To provide continuous three-dimensional (3D) C2 coverage during dynamic missions, we propose a Heterogeneous Dual-Network Framework (HDNF) for safe and reliable emergency delivery. HDNF tightly couples an Emergency Communication Support Network (ECSN), formed by hovering UAV base stations, with a Delivery Path Network (DPN), formed by fast-moving delivery UAVs. The ECSN dynamically safeguards mission-critical flight corridors, while the DPN aligns trajectories with reliable coverage regions. We formulate a joint optimization problem over task assignment, 3D UAV-BS deployment, and DPN path planning to maximize end-to-end C2 reliability while minimizing UAV flight energy consumption and base-station deployment cost. To solve this computationally intractable NP-hard problem, we develop a layered strategy with three components: (i) a multi-layer C2 service model that overcomes 2D-metric limitations and aligns UAV-BS deployment with mission-critical 3D phases; (ii) a 3D coverage-aware multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithm that addresses the high-dimensional search space and improves both training efficiency and topology resilience; and (iii) a 3D communication-aware A* planner that jointly optimizes C2 quality and flight energy, mitigating trajectory--coverage mismatch and improving routing safety. Extensive simulations show that HDNF markedly improves C2 reliability, eliminates outages in critical phases, and sustains high task success rates while reducing hardware deployment cost.

Energy-Efficient UAV Communications in the Presence of Wind: 3D Modeling and Trajectory Design

The rapid development of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology provides flexible communication services to terrestrial nodes. Energy efficiency is crucial to the deployment of UAVs, especially rotary-wing UAVs whose propulsion power is sensitive to the wind effect. In this paper, we first derive a three-dimensional (3D) generalised propulsion energy consumption model (GPECM) for rotary-wing UAVs under the consideration of stochastic wind modeling and 3D force analysis. Based on the GPECM, we study a UAV-enabled downlink communication system, where a rotary-wing UAV flies subject to stochastic wind disturbance and provides communication services for ground users (GUs). We aim to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the UAV by jointly optimizing the 3D trajectory and user scheduling among the GUs based on the GPECM. We formulate the problem as stochastic optimization, which is difficult to solve due to the lack of real-time wind information. To address this issue, we propose an offline-based online adaptive (OBOA) design with two phases, namely, an offline phase and an online phase. In the offline phase, we average the wind effect on the UAV by leveraging stochastic programming (SP) based on wind statistics; then, in the online phase, we further optimize the instantaneous velocity to adapt the real-time wind. Simulation results show that the optimized trajectories of the UAV in both two phases can better adapt to the wind in changing speed and direction, and achieves a higher EE compared with the windless scheme. In particular, our proposed OBOA design can be applied in the scenario with dramatic wind changes, and makes the UAV adjust its velocity dynamically to achieve a better performance in terms of EE.

Hybrid Offline-Online Design for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided UAV Communication

This letter considers the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication systems in urban areas under the general Rician fading channel. A hybrid offline-online design is proposed to improve the system performance by leveraging both the statistical channel state information (S-CSI) and instantaneous channel state information (I-CSI). For the offline phase, we aim to maximize the expected average achievable rate based on the S-CSI by jointly optimizing the RIS's phase-shift and UAV trajectory. The formulated stochastic optimization problem is difficult to solve due to its non-convexity. To tackle this problem, we propose an efficient algorithm by leveraging the stochastic successive convex approximation (SSCA) techniques. For the online phase, the UAV adaptively adjusts the transmit beamforming and user scheduling according to the effective I-CSI. Numerical results verify that the proposed hybrid design performs better than various bechmark schemes, and also demonstrate a favorable trade-off between system performance and CSI overhead.

Elevation Angle-Dependent 3D Trajectory Design for Aerial RIS-aided Communication

This paper investigates an aerial reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided communication system under the probabilistic line-of-sight (LoS) channel, where an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with an RIS is deployed to assist two ground nodes in their information exchange. An optimization problem with the objective of maximizing the minimum average achievable rate is formulated to jointly design the communication scheduling, the RIS's phase shift, and the three-dimensional (3D) UAV trajectory. To solve such a non-convex problem, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to obtain its suboptimal solution. Simulation results show that our proposed design significantly outperforms the existing schemes and provides new insights into the elevation angle and distance trade-off for the UAV-borne RIS communication system.

Energy-Efficient UAV-Mounted RIS Assisted Mobile Edge Computing

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) have been recently applied in the field of mobile edge computing (MEC) to improve the data exchange environment by proactively changing the wireless channels through maneuverable location deployment and intelligent signals reflection, respectively. Nevertheless, they may suffer from inherent limitations in practical scenarios. UAV-mounted RIS (U-RIS), as a promising integrated approach, can combine the advantages of UAV and RIS to break the limit. Inspired by this, we consider a novel U-RIS assisted MEC system, where a U-RIS is deployed to assist the communication between the ground users and an MEC server. The joint UAV trajectory, RIS passive beamforming and MEC resource allocation design is developed to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the system. To tackle the intractable non-convex problem, we divide it into two subproblems and solve them iteratively based on successive convex approximation (SCA) and the Dinkelbach method. Finally we obtain a high-performance suboptimal solution. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the energy efficiency of the MEC system.

Energy-Efficient UAV Communications: A Generalised Propulsion Energy Consumption Model

This paper proposes a generalised propulsion energy consumption model (PECM) for rotary-wing ummanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) under the consideration of the practical thrust-to-weight ratio (TWR) with respect to the velocity, acceleration and direction change of the UAVs. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed PECM, we consider a UAV-enabled communication system, where a rotary-wing UAV serves multiple ground users as an aerial base station. We aim to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the UAV by jointly optimizing the user scheduling and UAV trajectory variables. However, the formulated problem is a non-convex fractional integer programming problem, which is challenging to obtain its optimal solution. To tackle this, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm by decomposing the original problem into two sub-problems to obtain a suboptimal solution based on the successive convex approximation technique. Simulation results show that the optimized UAV trajectory by applying the proposed PECM are smoother and the corresponding EE has significant improvement as compared to other benchmark schemes.

Full-Dimensional Rate Enhancement for UAV-Enabled Communications via Intelligent Omni-Surface

This paper investigates the achievable rate maximization problem of a downlink unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled communication system aided by an intelligent omni-surface (IOS). Different from the state-of-the-art reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) that only reflects incident signals, the IOS can simultaneously reflect and transmit the signals, thereby providing full-dimensional rate enhancement. To tackle such a problem, we formulate it by jointly optimizing the IOS's phase shift and the UAV trajectory. Although it is difficult to solve it optimally due to its non-convexity, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. Simulation results show that the IOS-assisted UAV communications can achieve more significant improvement in achievable rates than other benchmark schemes.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted UAV Communication: Joint Trajectory Design and Passive Beamforming

Thanks to the line-of-sight (LoS) transmission and flexibility, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) effectively improve the throughput of wireless networks. Nevertheless, the LoS links are prone to severe deterioration by complex propagation environments, especially in urban areas. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), as a promising technique, can significantly improve the propagation environment and enhance communication quality by intelligently reflecting the received signals. Motivated by this, the joint UAV trajectory and RIS's passive beamforming design for a novel RIS-assisted UAV communication system is investigated to maximize the average achievable rate in this letter. To tackle the formulated non-convex problem, we divide it into two subproblems, namely, passive beamforming and trajectory optimization. We first derive a closed-form phase-shift solution for any given UAV trajectory to achieve the phase alignment of the received signals from different transmission paths. Then, with the optimal phase-shift solution, we obtain a suboptimal trajectory solution by using the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can considerably improve the average achievable rate of the system.

Energy Efficiency Maximization for Full-Duplex UAV Secrecy Communication

This letter proposes a new full-duplex (FD) secrecy communication scheme for the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and investigates its optimal design to achieve the maximum energy efficiency (EE) of the UAV. Specifically, the UAV receives the confidential information from a ground source and meanwhile sends jamming signals to interfere with a potential ground eavesdropper. As the UAV has limited on-board energy in practice, we aim to maximize the EE for its secrecy communication, by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory and the source/UAV transmit/jamming powers over a finite flight period with given initial and final locations. Although the problem is difficult to solve, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to obtain its suboptimal solution. Simulation results show that the proposed joint design can significantly improve the EE of UAV secrecy communication, as compared to various benchmark schemes.
