Lifting of level-1 states in the D1D5 CFT

The D1D5 CFT has a large set of states that are supersymmetric at the `free' orbifold point in moduli space. When we perturb away from this point, some of these states join into long multiplets and lift in energy, while others remain supersymmetric. The count of unlifted states can be bounded below by an index, but the index does not yield the pattern of lifting; i.e., which states join into a long multiplet and how much this multiplet lifts. In this paper we consider the simple case of the D1D5 CFT where the orbifold CFT is a sigma model with targets space $(T^4)^2/S_2$ and consider states at energy level $1$. There are $2688$ states at this level. The lifted states form a triplet of long multiplets, and we compute their lift at second order in perturbation theory. Half the members of the long multiplet are in the untwisted sector and half are in the twisted sector. This and other similar studies should help in the understanding of fuzzball states that describe extremal holes, since CFT sectors with low twist describe shallow throats in the dual gravity solution while sectors with high twist describe deep throats.

Multi-level Thresholding Test for High Dimensional Covariance Matrices

We consider testing the equality of two high-dimensional covariance matrices by carrying out a multi-level thresholding procedure, which is designed to detect sparse and faint differences between the covariances. A novel U-statistic composition is developed to establish the asymptotic distribution of the thresholding statistics in conjunction with the matrix blocking and the coupling techniques. We propose a multi-thresholding test that is shown to be powerful in detecting sparse and weak differences between two covariance matrices. The test is shown to have attractive detection boundary and to attain the optimal minimax rate in the signal strength under different regimes of high dimensionality and the sparsity of the signal. Simulation studies are conducted to demonstrate the utility of the proposed test.

The Future of Misinformation Detection: New Perspectives and Trends

The massive spread of misinformation in social networks has become a global risk, implicitly influencing public opinion and threatening social/political development. Misinformation detection (MID) has thus become a surging research topic in recent years. As a promising and rapid developing research field, we find that many efforts have been paid to new research problems and approaches of MID. Therefore, it is necessary to give a comprehensive review of the new research trends of MID. We first give a brief review of the literature history of MID, based on which we present several new research challenges and techniques of it, including early detection, detection by multimodal data fusion, and explanatory detection. We further investigate the extraction and usage of various crowd intelligence in MID, which paves a promising way to tackle MID challenges. Finally, we give our own views on the open issues and future research directions of MID, such as model adaptivity/generality to new events, embracing of novel machine learning models, explanatory detection models, and so on.

CrowdOS: A Ubiquitous Operating System for Crowdsourcing and Mobile Crowd Sensing

With the rise of crowdsourcing and mobile crowdsensing techniques, a large number of crowdsourcing applications or platforms (CAP) have appeared. In the mean time, CAP-related models and frameworks based on different research hypotheses are rapidly emerging, and they usually address specific issues from a certain perspective. Due to different settings and conditions, different models are not compatible with each other. However, CAP urgently needs to combine these techniques to form a unified framework. In addition, these models needs to be learned and updated online with the extension of crowdsourced data and task types, thus requiring a unified architecture that integrates lifelong learning concepts and breaks down the barriers between different modules. This paper draws on the idea of ubiquitous operating systems and proposes a novel OS (CrowdOS), which is an abstract software layer running between native OS and application layer. In particular, based on an in-depth analysis of the complex crowd environment and diverse characteristics of heterogeneous tasks, we construct the OS kernel and three core frameworks including Task Resolution and Assignment Framework (TRAF), Integrated Resource Management (IRM), and Task Result quality Optimization (TRO). In addition, we validate the usability of CrowdOS, module correctness and development efficiency. Our evaluation further reveals TRO brings enormous improvement in efficiency and a reduction in energy consumption.

From Crowdsourcing to Crowdmining: Using Implicit Human Intelligence for Better Understanding of Crowdsourced Data

With the development of mobile social networks, more and more crowdsourced data are generated on the Web or collected from real-world sensing. The fragment, heterogeneous, and noisy nature of online/offline crowdsourced data, however, makes it difficult to be understood. Traditional content-based analyzing methods suffer from potential issues such as computational intensiveness and poor performance. To address them, this paper presents CrowdMining. In particular, we observe that the knowledge hidden in the process of data generation, regarding individual/crowd behavior patterns (e.g., mobility patterns, community contexts such as social ties and structure) and crowd-object interaction patterns (flickering or tweeting patterns) are neglected in crowdsourced data mining. Therefore, a novel approach that leverages implicit human intelligence (implicit HI) for crowdsourced data mining and understanding is proposed. Two studies titled CrowdEvent and CrowdRoute are presented to showcase its usage, where implicit HIs are extracted either from online or offline crowdsourced data. A generic model for CrowdMining is further proposed based on a set of existing studies. Experiments based on real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of CrowdMining.

The Mass, Fake News, and Cognition Security

The wide spread of fake news in social networks is posing threats to social stability, economic development and political democracy etc. Numerous studies have explored the effective detection approaches of online fake news, while few works study the intrinsic propagation and cognition mechanisms of fake news. Since the development of cognitive science paves a promising way for the prevention of fake news, we present a new research area called Cognition Security (CogSec), which studies the potential impacts of fake news to human cognition, ranging from misperception, untrusted knowledge acquisition, targeted opinion/attitude formation, to biased decision making, and investigates the effective ways for fake news debunking. CogSec is a multidisciplinary research field that leverages knowledge from social science, psychology, cognition science, neuroscience, AI and computer science. We first propose related definitions to characterize CogSec and review the literature history. We further investigate the key research challenges and techniques of CogSec, including human-content cognition mechanism, social influence and opinion diffusion, fake news detection and malicious bot detection. Finally, we summarize the open issues and future research directions, such as early detection of fake news, explainable fake news debunking, social contagion and diffusion models of fake news, and so on.

Lifting of states in 2-dimensional $N=4$ supersymmetric CFTs

We consider states of the D1-D5 CFT where only the left-moving sector is excited. As we deform away from the orbifold point, some of these states will remain BPS while others can `lift'. The lifting can be computed by a path integral containing two twist deformations; however, the relevant 4-point amplitude cannot be computed explicitly in many cases. We analyze an older proposal by Gava and Narain where the lift can be computed in terms of a finite number of 3-point functions. A direct Hamiltonian decomposition of the path integral involves an infinite number of 3-point functions, as well the first order correction to the starting state. We note that these corrections to the state account for the infinite number of 3-point functions arising from higher energy states, and one can indeed express the path-integral result in terms of a finite number of 3-point functions involving only the leading order states that are degenerate. The first order correction to the supercharge $\bar G^{(1)}$ gets replaced by a projection $\bar G^{(P)}$; this projected operator can also be used to group the states into multiplets whose members have the same lifting.

Learning Cross-Domain Representation with Multi-Graph Neural Network

Learning effective embedding has been proved to be useful in many real-world problems, such as recommender systems, search ranking and online advertisement. However, one of the challenges is data sparsity in learning large-scale item embedding, as users' historical behavior data are usually lacking or insufficient in an individual domain. In fact, user's behaviors from different domains regarding the same items are usually relevant. Therefore, we can learn complete user behaviors to alleviate the sparsity using complementary information from correlated domains. It is intuitive to model users' behaviors using graph, and graph neural networks (GNNs) have recently shown the great power for representation learning, which can be used to learn item embedding. However, it is challenging to transfer the information across domains and learn cross-domain representation using the existing GNNs. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose a novel model - Deep Multi-Graph Embedding (DMGE) to learn cross-domain representation. Specifically, we first construct a multi-graph based on users' behaviors from different domains, and then propose a multi-graph neural network to learn cross-domain representation in an unsupervised manner. Particularly, we present a multiple-gradient descent optimizer for efficiently training the model. We evaluate our approach on various large-scale real-world datasets, and the experimental results show that DMGE outperforms other state-of-art embedding methods in various tasks.

Multi-agent Attentional Activity Recognition

Multi-modality is an important feature of sensor based activity recognition. In this work, we consider two inherent characteristics of human activities, the spatially-temporally varying salience of features and the relations between activities and corresponding body part motions. Based on these, we propose a multi-agent spatial-temporal attention model. The spatial-temporal attention mechanism helps intelligently select informative modalities and their active periods. And the multiple agents in the proposed model represent activities with collective motions across body parts by independently selecting modalities associated with single motions. With a joint recognition goal, the agents share gained information and coordinate their selection policies to learn the optimal recognition model. The experimental results on four real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Interfacial superconductivity induced by single-quintuple-layer Bi$_2$Te$_3$ on top of FeTe forming van-der-Waals heterostructure

We report the first clear observation of interfacial superconductivity on top of FeTe(FT) covered by one quintuple-layer Bi$_2$Te$_3$(BT) forming van-der-Waals heterojunction. Both transport and scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements confirm the occurrence of superconductivity at a transition temperature T$_c$ = 13~K, when a single-quintuple-layer BT is deposited on the non-superconducting FT surface. The superconductivity gap decays exponentially with the thickness of BT, suggesting it occurs at the BT-FT interface and the proximity length is above 5-6~nm. We also measure the work function's dependence on the thickness of BT, implying a charge transfer may occur at the BT/FT interface to introduce hole doping into the FT layer, which may serve as a possible candidate for the superconducting mechanism. Our BT/FT heterojunction provides a clean system to study the unconventional interfacial superconductivity.

Describing the ADD model in a warped geometry

We propose a new description of the (4+N)-dimensional Arkani-Hamed-Dimopoulos-Dvali (ADD) model in a (4+1)-dimensional warped geometry to solve the gauge hierarchy problem. It has the same KK spectrum as in the ADD model and recovers its phenomenons that do not involve the interaction among the graviton KK modes. There is no hierarchy between the fundamental length and the size of the extra dimension. An explicit realization is constructed in the nonlocal gravity theory to give a warped description of the six-dimensional ADD model. Remarkably, the equivalent number N of the extra dimensions in this description may be non-integral, which provides a new mechanism to escape the experimental constrains.

Smart City Development with Urban Transfer Learning

Nowadays, the smart city development levels of different cities are still unbalanced. For a large number of cities which just started development, the governments will face a critical cold-start problem: 'how to develop a new smart city service with limited data?'. To address this problem, transfer learning can be leveraged to accelerate the smart city development, which we term the urban transfer learning paradigm. This article investigates the common process of urban transfer learning, aiming to provide city planners and relevant practitioners with guidelines on how to apply this novel learning paradigm. Our guidelines include common transfer strategies to take, general steps to follow, and case studies in public safety, transportation management, etc. We also summarize a few research opportunities and expect this article can attract more researchers to study urban transfer learning.

The Hierarchy Problem and New Warped Extra Dimension

In this paper, we propose a new mechanism with warped extra dimension to solve the hierarchy problem, which is parallel to the Randall-Sundrum (RS) brane scenario. Different from the RS scenario, the fundamental scale is TeV scale and the four-dimensional Planck scale is generated from the exponential warped extra dimension at size of a few TeV$^{-1}$. The experimental consequences of this scenario are very different from that of the RS scenario. In the explicit realization in the nonlocal gravity theory, there is a tower of spin-2 excitations with mass gap $10^{-4}\text{eV}$ and they are coupled with the gravitational scale to the standard model particles. We further discuss the possible generalizations in other modified gravity theories. The experimental consequences are similar to $(4+N)$-dimensional large extra dimension but $N$ can be a non-integer, which satisfies the experimental constraints more easily than the integer large extra dimension model.

Kahler-Ricci flow on blowups along submanifolds

In this short note, we study the behavior of Kaher-Ricci flow on Kahler manifolds which contract divisors to smooth submanifolds. We show that the Kahler potentials are Holder continuous and the flow converges sequentially in Gromov-Hausdorff topology to a compact metric space which is homeomorphic to the base manifold.

Schauder estimates for equations with cone metrics, II

This is the continuation of our paper \cite{GS}, to study the linear theory for equations with conical singularities. We derive interior Schauder estimates for linear elliptic and parabolic equations with a background Kähler metric of conical singularities along a divisor of simple normal crossings. As an application, we prove the short-time existence of the conical Kähler-Ricci flow with conical singularities along a divisor with simple normal crossings.

CrowdExpress: A Probabilistic Framework for On-Time Crowdsourced Package Deliveries

Speed and cost of logistics are two major concerns to on-line shoppers, but they generally conflict with each other in nature. To alleviate the contradiction, we propose to exploit existing taxis that are transporting passengers on the street to relay packages collaboratively, which can simultaneously lower the cost and accelerate the speed. Specifically, we propose a probabilistic framework containing two phases called CrowdExpress for the on-time package express deliveries. In the first phase, we mine the historical taxi GPS trajectory data offline to build the package transport network. In the second phase, we develop an online adaptive taxi scheduling algorithm to find the path with the maximum arriving-on-time probability "on-the-fly" upon real- time requests, and direct the package routing accordingly. Finally, we evaluate the system using the real-world taxi data generated by over 19,000 taxis in a month in the city of New York, US. Results show that around 9,500 packages can be delivered successfully on time per day with the success rate over 94%, moreover, the average computation time is within 25 milliseconds.

On convergence criteria for the coupled flow of Li-Yuan-Zhang

A one-parameter family of coupled flows depending on a parameter $κ>0$ is introduced which reduces when $κ=1$ to the coupled flow of a metric $ω$ with a $(1,1)$-form $α$ due recently to Y. Li, Y. Yuan, and Y. Zhang. It is shown in particular that, for $κ\not=1$, estimates for derivatives of all orders would follow from $C^0$ estimates for $ω$ and $α$. Together with the monotonicity of suitably adapted energy functionals, this can be applied to establish the convergence of the flow in some situations, including on Riemann surfaces. Very little is known as yet about the monotonicity and convergence of flows in presence of couplings, and conditions such as $κ\not=1$ seem new and may be useful in the future.
