A Markov Model of Slice Admission Control

The emerging feature of network slicing in future Fifth Generation (5G) networks calls for efficient slice management. Recent studies have been focusing on the mechanism of slice admission control, which functions in a manner of state machine. This paper proposes a general state model for synchronous slice admission control, and proves it to be Markovian under a set of weak constraints. An analytical approximation of the state transition matrix to reduce computational complexity in practical applications is also proposed and evaluated.

Quasi-tight Framelets with Directionality or High Vanishing Moments Derived from Arbitrary Refinable Functions

Construction of multivariate tight framelets is known to be a challenging problem. Multivariate dual framelets with vanishing moments generalize tight framelets and are not easy to be constructed either. Compactly supported multivariate framelets with directionality or high vanishing moments are of interest and importance in both theory and applications. In this paper we introduce the notion of a quasi-tight framelet, which is a dual framelet, but behaves almost like a tight framelet. Let $ϕ\in L_2(R^d)$ be an arbitrary compactly supported $M$-refinable function such that its underlying low-pass filter satisfies the basic sum rule. We first constructively prove by a step-by-step algorithm that we can always easily derive from the arbitrary $M$-refinable function $ϕ$ a directional compactly supported quasi-tight $M$-framelet in $L_2(R^d)$ associated with a directional quasi-tight $M$-framelet filter bank, each of whose high-pass filters has only two nonzero coefficients with opposite signs. If in addition all the coefficients of its low-pass filter are nonnegative, such a quasi-tight $M$-framelet becomes a directional tight $M$-framelet in $L_2(R^d)$. Furthermore, we show by a constructive algorithm that we can always derive from the arbitrary $M$-refinable function $ϕ$ a compactly supported quasi-tight $M$-framelet in $L_2(R^d)$ with the highest possible order of vanishing moments. We shall also present a result on quasi-tight framelets whose associated high-pass filters are purely differencing filters with the highest order of vanishing moments. Several examples will be provided to illustrate our main theoretical results and algorithms in this paper.

Generalized Matrix Spectral Factorization and Quasi-tight Framelets with Minimum Number of Generators

As a generalization of orthonormal wavelets in $L_2(R)$, tight framelets (also called tight wavelet frames) are of importance in wavelet analysis and applied sciences due to their many desirable properties in applications such as image processing and numerical algorithms. Tight framelets are often derived from particular refinable functions satisfying certain stringent conditions. Consequently, a large family of refinable functions cannot be used to construct tight framelets. This motivates us to introduce the notion of a quasi-tight framelet, which is a dual framelet but behaves almost like a tight framelet. It turns out that the study of quasi-tight framelets is intrinsically linked to the problem of the generalized matrix spectral factorization for matrices of Laurent polynomials. In this paper, we provide a systematic investigation on the generalized matrix spectral factorization problem and compactly supported quasi-tight framelets. As an application of our results on generalized matrix spectral factorization for matrices of Laurent polynomials, we prove in this paper that from any arbitrary compactly supported refinable function in $L_2(R)$, we can always construct a compactly supported one-dimensional quasi-tight framelet having the minimum number of generators and the highest possible order of vanishing moments. Our proofs are constructive and supplemented by step-by-step algorithms. Several examples of quasi-tight framelets will be provided to illustrate the theoretical results and algorithms developed in this paper.

Slice as an Evolutionary Service: Genetic Optimization for Inter-Slice Resource Management in 5G Networks

In the context of Fifth Generation (5G) mobile networks, the concept of "Slice as a Service" (SlaaS) promotes mobile network operators to flexibly share infrastructures with mobile service providers and stakeholders. However, it also challenges with an emerging demand for efficient online algorithms to optimize the request-and-decision-based inter-slice resource management strategy. Based on genetic algorithms, this paper presents a novel online optimizer that efficiently approaches towards the ideal slicing strategy with maximized long-term network utility. The proposed method encodes slicing strategies into binary sequences to cope with the request-and-decision mechanism. It requires no a priori knowledge about the traffic/utility models, and therefore supports heterogeneous slices, while providing solid effectiveness, good robustness against non-stationary service scenarios, and high scalability.

A Fast Blind Impulse Detector for Bernoulli-Gaussian Noise in Underspread Channel

The Bernoulli-Gaussian (BG) model is practical to characterize impulsive noises that widely exist in various communication systems. To estimate the BG model parameters from noise measurements, a precise impulse detection is essential. In this paper, we propose a novel blind impulse detector, which is proven to be fast and accurate for BG noise in underspread communication channels.

5G Island for Network Resilience and Autonomous Failsafe Operations

The resilience of 5G networks can be strongly challenged by central cloud virtual network function (VNF) outages, which can be cause by server and backhaul connection errors. This paper proposes a context-aware approach to migrate VNF from central cloud to local edge cloud, in order to improve the network resilience with minimized VNF migration cost.

A unified image reconstruction framework for quantitative dual- and triple-energy CT imaging of material compositions

Many clinical applications depend critically on the accurate differentiation and classification of different types of materials in patient anatomy. This work introduces a unified framework for accurate nonlinear material decomposition and applies it, for the first time, in the concept of triple-energy CT (TECT) for enhanced material differentiation and classification as well as dual-energy CT. The triple-energy data acquisition is implemented at the scales of micro-CT and clinical CT imaging with commercial "TwinBeam" dual-source DECT configuration and a fast kV switching DECT configuration. Material decomposition and quantitative comparison with a photon counting detector and with the presence of a bow-tie filter are also performed. The proposed method provides quantitative material- and energy-selective images examining realistic configurations for both dual- and triple-energy CT measurements. Compared to the polychromatic kV CT images, virtual monochromatic images show superior image quality. For the mouse phantom, quantitative measurements show that the differences between gadodiamide and iodine concentrations obtained using TECT and idealized photon counting CT (PCCT) are smaller than 8 mg/mL and 1 mg/mL, respectively. TECT outperforms DECT for multi-contrast CT imaging and is robust with respect to spectrum estimation. For the thorax phantom, the differences between the concentrations of the contrast map and the corresponding true reference values are smaller than 7 mg/mL for all of the realistic configurations. A unified framework for both dual- and triple-energy CT imaging has been established for the accurate extraction of material compositions; considering currently available commercial DECT configurations. The novel technique is promising to provide an urgently needed solution for several CT-based diagnosis and therapy applications.

Multi-RATs Support to Improve V2X Communication

As the next generation of wireless system targets at providing a wider range of services with divergent QoS requirements, new applications will be enabled by the fifth generation (5G) network. Among the emerging applications, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication is an important use case targeted by 5G to enable an improved traffic safety and traffic efficiency. Since the V2X communication requires a low end-to-end (E2E) latency and an ultra-high reliability, the legacy cellular networks can not meet the service requirement. In this work, we inspect on the system performance of applying the LTE-Uu and PC5 interfaces to enable the V2X communication. With the LTE-Uu interface, one V2X data packet is transmitted through the cellular network infrastructure, while the PC5 interface facilitates the direct V2X communication without involving the network infrastructure in user-plane. In addition, due to the high reliability requirement, the application of a single V2X transmission technology can not meet the targets in some scenarios. Therefore, we also propose a multi-radio access technologies (multi-RATs) scheme where the data packet travels through both the LTE-Uu and PC5 interfaces to obtain a diversity gain. Last but not least, in order to derive the system performance, a system level simulator is implemented in this work. The numerical results provide us insights on how the different technologies will perform in different scenarios and also validate the proposed multi-RATs scheme.

A 3D Human Body Blockage Model for Outdoor Millimeter-Wave Cellular Communication

Blocking is one of the most important challenges in exploiting millimeter-wave for fifth-generation (5G) cellular communication systems. Compared to blockages caused by buildings or terrains, human body blockage exhibits a higher complexity due to the mobility and dynamic statistics of humans. To support development of outdoor millimeter-wave cellular systems, in this paper we present a novel 3D physical model of human body blockage. Based on the proposed model, the impact of human body blockage on frame-based data transmission is discussed, with respect to the system specifications and environment conditions.

A Profit-Maximizing Strategy of Network Resource Management for 5G Tenant Slices

Supported by the emerging technologies of Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and network slicing, 5G networks allow tenants to rent resources from mobile network operators (MNOs) in order to provide services without possessing an own network infrastructure. The MNOs are therefore facing the problem of deciding if to accept or decline the resource renting requests they receive. This paper builds a stochastic model that describes the MNO's revenue and opportunity cost of accepting a contract, and therewith proposes a strategy that is analytically derived to maximize the expected profit at every decision.

Security Trust Zone in 5G Networks

Fifth Generation (5G) telecommunication system is going to deliver a flexible radio access network (RAN). Security functions such as authorization, authentication and accounting (AAA) are expected to be distributed from central clouds to edge clouds. We propose a novel architectural security solution that applies to 5G networks. It is called Trust Zone (TZ) that is designed as an enhancement of the 5G AAA in the edge cloud. TZ also provides an autonomous and decentralized security policy for different tenants under variable network conditions. TZ also initiates an ability of disaster cognition and extends the security functionalities to a set of flexible and highly available emergency services in the edge cloud.

Modeling Profit of Sliced 5G Networks for Advanced Network Resource Management and Slice Implementation

The core innovation in future 5G cellular networksnetwork slicing, aims at providing a flexible and efficient framework of network organization and resource management. The revolutionary network architecture based on slices, makes most of the current network cost models obsolete, as they estimate the expenditures in a static manner. In this paper, a novel methodology is proposed, in which a value chain in sliced networks is presented. Based on the proposed value chain, the profits generated by different slices are analyzed, and the task of network resource management is modeled as a multiobjective optimization problem. Setting strong assumptions, this optimization problem is analyzed starting from a simple ideal scenario. By removing the assumptions step-by-step, realistic but complex use cases are approached. Through this progressive analysis, technical challenges in slice implementation and network optimization are investigated under different scenarios. For each challenge, some potentially available solutions are suggested, and likely applications are also discussed.

Directional Compactly supported Box Spline Tight Framelets with Simple Structure

To effectively capture singularities in high-dimensional data and functions, multivariate compactly supported tight framelets, having directionality and derived from refinable box splines, are of particular interest in both theory and applications. The $d$-dimensional Haar refinable function $χ_{[0,1]^d}$ is a simple example of refinable box splines. For every dimension $d\in \N$, in this paper we construct a directional compactly supported $d$-dimensional Haar tight framelet such that all its high-pass filters in its underlying tight framelet filter bank have only two nonzero coefficients with opposite signs and they exhibit totally $(3^d-1)/2$ directions in dimension $d$. Furthermore, applying the projection method to such directional Haar tight framelets, from every refinable box spline in every dimension, we construct a directional compactly supported box spline tight framelet with simple structure such that all the high-pass filters in its underlying tight framelet filter bank have only two nonzero coefficients with opposite signs. Moreover, such compactly supported box spline tight framelets can achieve arbitrarily high numbers of directions by using refinable box splines with increasing supports.

Sharp one component regularity for Navier-Stokes

We consider the conditional regularity of mild solution $v$ to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions. Let $e \in \mathbb{S}^2$ and $0 < T^\ast < \infty$. J. Chemin and P. Zhang \cite{CP} proved the regularity of $v$ on $(0,T^\ast]$ if there exists $p \in (4, 6)$ such that $$\int_0^{T^\ast}\|v\cdot e\|^p_{\dot{H}^{\frac{1}{2}+\frac{2}{p}}}dt < \infty.$$ J. Chemin, P. Zhang and Z. F. Zhang \cite{CPZ} extended the range of $p$ to $(4, \infty)$. In this article we settle the case $p \in [2, 4]$. Our proof also works for the case $p \in (4,\infty)$.

Feasibility Study of Enabling V2X Communications by LTE-Uu Radio Interface

Compared with the legacy wireless networks, the next generation of wireless network targets at different services with divergent QoS requirements, ranging from bandwidth consuming video service to moderate and low date rate machine type services, and supporting as well as strict latency requirements. One emerging new service is to exploit wireless network to improve the efficiency of vehicular traffic and public safety. However, the stringent packet end-to-end (E2E) latency and ultra-low transmission failure rates pose challenging requirements on the legacy networks. In other words, the next generation wireless network needs to support ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) involving new key performance indicators (KPIs) rather than the conventional metric, such as cell throughput in the legacy systems. In this paper, a feasibility study on applying today's LTE network infrastructure and LTE-Uu air interface to provide the URLLC type of services is performed, where the communication takes place between two traffic participants (e.g., vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian). To carry out this study, an evaluation methodology of the cellular vehicle-to-anything (V2X) communication is proposed, where packet E2E latency and successful transmission rate are considered as the key performance indicators (KPIs). Then, we describe the simulation assumptions for the evaluation. Based on them, simulation results are depicted that demonstrate the performance of the LTE network in fulfilling new URLLC requirements. Moreover, sensitivity analysis is also conducted regarding how to further improve system performance, in order to enable new emerging URLLC services.

Optimal Resource Dedication in Grouped Random Access for Massive Machine-Type Communications

The high risk of random access collisions leads to huge challenge for the deployment massive Machine-Type Communications (mMTC), which cannot be sufficiently overcome by current solutions in LTE/LTE-A networks such as the extended access barring (EAB) scheme. The recently studied approaches of grouped random access have shown a great potential in simultaneously reducing the collision rate and the power consumption in mMTC applications, and exhibit a good compatibility with the concept of random access resource separation. In this work, we propose an optimized resource dedication strategy for grouped random access approaches, which inherits the advantage of resource separation to isolate device classes from each other, while providing an optional class preference with high flexibility and accuracy, which has been usually implemented with access class barring.

Homogeneous Wavelets and Framelets with the Refinable Structure

Homogeneous wavelets and framelets have been extensively investigated in the classical theory of wavelets and they are often constructed from refinable functions via the multiresolution analysis. On the other hand, nonhomogeneous wavelets and framelets enjoy many desirable theoretical properties and are often intrinsically linked to the refinable structure and multiresolution analysis. In this paper we shall provide a comprehensive study on connecting homogeneous wavelets and framelets to nonhomogeneous ones with the refinable structure. This allows us to understand better the structure of homogeneous wavelets and framelets as well as their connections to the refinable structure and multiresolution analysis.

Applying Device-to-Device Communication to Enhance IoT Services

Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) to serve billions of IoT devices is considered to open a potential new market for the next generation cellular network. Legacy cellular networks cannot meet the requirements of emerging mMTC applications, since they were designed for human-driven services. In order to provide supports for mMTC services, current research and standardization work focus on the improvement and adaptation of legacy networks. However, these solutions face challenges to enhance the service availability and improve the battery life of mMTC devices simultaneously. In this article, we propose to exploit a network controlled sidelink communication scheme to enable cellular network with better support for mMTC services. Moreover, a context-aware algorithm is applied to ensure the efficiency of the proposed scheme and multiple context information of devices are taken into account. Correspondingly, signaling schemes are also designed and illustrated in this work to facilitate the proposed technology. The signaling schemes enable the network to collect required context information with light signaling effort and thus network can derive a smart configuration for both the sidelink and cellular link. In order to demonstrate the improvements brought by our scheme, a system-level simulator is implemented and numerical results show that our scheme can simultaneously enhance both the service availability and battery life of sensors.
