Optical biomarker of metabolism for breast tumor diagnosis: Insights from subcellular dynamics

Label-free metabolic dynamics contrast is highly appealing but difficult to achieve in biomedical imaging. Interference offers a highly sensitive mechanism for capturing the metabolic dynamics of the subcellular scatterers. However, traditional interference detection methods fail to isolate pure metabolic dynamics, as the dynamic signals are coupled with scatterer reflectivity and other uncontrollable imaging factors. Here, we demonstrate active phase modulation-assisted dynamic full-field optical coherence tomography (APMD-FFOCT) that decouples and quantifies the metabolic dynamics by adding a reference movement for all interferential scatterers. This novel technique enables imaging and dynamic analysis of subcellular structures along with their changes during the apoptotic process in tumor tissues. Furthermore, the nucleus-to-cytoplasm dynamic intensity ratio could serve as an optical biomarker for breast tumor grading, enhancing intraoperative diagnosis.

Fast and label-free 3D virtual H&E histology via active modulation-assisted dynamic full-field OCT

Pathological features are the gold standard for tumor diagnosis, guiding treatment and prognosis. However, standard histopathological process is labor-intensive and time-consuming, while frozen sections have lower accuracy. Dynamic full-field optical coherence tomography (D-FFOCT) offers rapid histologic information by measuring the subcellular dynamics of fresh, unprocessed tissues. However, D-FFOCT images suffer from abrupt shifts in hue and brightness, which is confusing for pathologists and diminish their interpretability and reliability. Here, we present active phase modulation-assisted D-FFOCT (APMD-FFOCT) to improve the imaging stability and enhance the contrast of static tissues. This enables us to further employ an unsupervised deep learning to convert APMD-FFOCT images into virtual hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained images for the first time. Three-dimensional (3D) virtual H&E-stained images have been obtained at a scanning rate of 1 frame per second, as demonstrated in cancer diagnosis for human central nervous system and breast. The results prove that this new method will play a unique and important role in intraoperative histology.

AnimatableDreamer: Text-Guided Non-rigid 3D Model Generation and Reconstruction with Canonical Score Distillation

Advances in 3D generation have facilitated sequential 3D model generation (a.k.a 4D generation), yet its application for animatable objects with large motion remains scarce. Our work proposes AnimatableDreamer, a text-to-4D generation framework capable of generating diverse categories of non-rigid objects on skeletons extracted from a monocular video. At its core, AnimatableDreamer is equipped with our novel optimization design dubbed Canonical Score Distillation (CSD), which lifts 2D diffusion for temporal consistent 4D generation. CSD, designed from a score gradient perspective, generates a canonical model with warp-robustness across different articulations. Notably, it also enhances the authenticity of bones and skinning by integrating inductive priors from a diffusion model. Furthermore, with multi-view distillation, CSD infers invisible regions, thereby improving the fidelity of monocular non-rigid reconstruction. Extensive experiments demonstrate the capability of our method in generating high-flexibility text-guided 3D models from the monocular video, while also showing improved reconstruction performance over existing non-rigid reconstruction methods.

Identity-aware Dual-constraint Network for Cloth-Changing Person Re-identification

Cloth-Changing Person Re-Identification (CC-ReID) aims to accurately identify the target person in more realistic surveillance scenarios, where pedestrians usually change their clothing. Despite great progress, limited cloth-changing training samples in existing CC-ReID datasets still prevent the model from adequately learning cloth-irrelevant features. In addition, due to the absence of explicit supervision to keep the model constantly focused on cloth-irrelevant areas, existing methods are still hampered by the disruption of clothing variations. To solve the above issues, we propose an Identity-aware Dual-constraint Network (IDNet) for the CC-ReID task. Specifically, to help the model extract cloth-irrelevant clues, we propose a Clothes Diversity Augmentation (CDA), which generates more realistic cloth-changing samples by enriching the clothing color while preserving the texture. In addition, a Multi-scale Constraint Block (MCB) is designed, which extracts fine-grained identity-related features and effectively transfers cloth-irrelevant knowledge. Moreover, a Counterfactual-guided Attention Module (CAM) is presented, which learns cloth-irrelevant features from channel and space dimensions and utilizes the counterfactual intervention for supervising the attention map to highlight identity-related regions. Finally, a Semantic Alignment Constraint (SAC) is designed to facilitate high-level semantic feature interaction. Comprehensive experiments on four CC-ReID datasets indicate that our method outperforms prior state-of-the-art approaches.

Trust Recognition in Human-Robot Cooperation Using EEG

Collaboration between humans and robots is becoming increasingly crucial in our daily life. In order to accomplish efficient cooperation, trust recognition is vital, empowering robots to predict human behaviors and make trust-aware decisions. Consequently, there is an urgent need for a generalized approach to recognize human-robot trust. This study addresses this need by introducing an EEG-based method for trust recognition during human-robot cooperation. A human-robot cooperation game scenario is used to stimulate various human trust levels when working with robots. To enhance recognition performance, the study proposes an EEG Vision Transformer model coupled with a 3-D spatial representation to capture the spatial information of EEG, taking into account the topological relationship among electrodes. To validate this approach, a public EEG-based human trust dataset called EEGTrust is constructed. Experimental results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, achieving an accuracy of 74.99% in slice-wise cross-validation and 62.00% in trial-wise cross-validation. This outperforms baseline models in both recognition accuracy and generalization. Furthermore, an ablation study demonstrates a significant improvement in trust recognition performance of the spatial representation. The source code and EEGTrust dataset are available at https://github.com/CaiyueXu/EEGTrust.

Deformable object manipulation (DOM) for robots has a wide range of applications in various fields such as industrial, service and health care sectors. However, compared to manipulation of rigid objects, DOM poses significant challenges for robotic perception, modeling and manipulation, due to the infinite dimensionality of the state space of deformable objects (DOs) and the complexity of their dynamics. The development of computer graphics and machine learning has enabled novel techniques for DOM. These techniques, based on data-driven paradigms, can address some of the challenges that analytical approaches of DOM face. However, some existing reviews do not include all aspects of DOM, and some previous reviews do not summarize data-driven approaches adequately. In this article, we survey more than 150 relevant studies (data-driven approaches mainly) and summarize recent advances, open challenges, and new frontiers for aspects of perception, modeling and manipulation for DOs. Particularly, we summarize initial progress made by Large Language Models (LLMs) in robotic manipulation, and indicates some valuable directions for further research. We believe that integrating data-driven approaches and analytical approaches can provide viable solutions to open challenges of DOM.

Synthetic IMU Datasets and Protocols Can Simplify Fall Detection Experiments and Optimize Sensor Configuration

Falls represent a significant cause of injury among the elderly population. Extensive research has been devoted to the utilization of wearable IMU sensors in conjunction with machine learning techniques for fall detection. To address the challenge of acquiring costly training data, this paper presents a novel method that generates a substantial volume of synthetic IMU data with minimal real fall experiments. First, unmarked 3D motion capture technology is employed to reconstruct human movements. Subsequently, utilizing the biomechanical simulation platform Opensim and forward kinematic methods, an ample amount of training data from various body segments can be custom generated. An LSTM model is trained, achieving testing accuracies of 91.99% and 86.62% on two distinct datasets of actual fall-related IMU data, demonstrated the comparable performance of models trained using genuine IMU data. Building upon the simulation framework, this paper further optimized the single IMU attachment position and multiple IMU combinations on fall detection. The proposed method simplifies fall detection data acquisition experiments, provides novel venue for generating low cost synthetic data in scenario where acquiring data for machine learning is challenging and paves the way for customizing machine learning configurations.

Goal-Conditioned Reinforcement Learning with Disentanglement-based Reachability Planning

Goal-Conditioned Reinforcement Learning (GCRL) can enable agents to spontaneously set diverse goals to learn a set of skills. Despite the excellent works proposed in various fields, reaching distant goals in temporally extended tasks remains a challenge for GCRL. Current works tackled this problem by leveraging planning algorithms to plan intermediate subgoals to augment GCRL. Their methods need two crucial requirements: (i) a state representation space to search valid subgoals, and (ii) a distance function to measure the reachability of subgoals. However, they struggle to scale to high-dimensional state space due to their non-compact representations. Moreover, they cannot collect high-quality training data through standard GC policies, which results in an inaccurate distance function. Both affect the efficiency and performance of planning and policy learning. In the paper, we propose a goal-conditioned RL algorithm combined with Disentanglement-based Reachability Planning (REPlan) to solve temporally extended tasks. In REPlan, a Disentangled Representation Module (DRM) is proposed to learn compact representations which disentangle robot poses and object positions from high-dimensional observations in a self-supervised manner. A simple REachability discrimination Module (REM) is also designed to determine the temporal distance of subgoals. Moreover, REM computes intrinsic bonuses to encourage the collection of novel states for training. We evaluate our REPlan in three vision-based simulation tasks and one real-world task. The experiments demonstrate that our REPlan significantly outperforms the prior state-of-the-art methods in solving temporally extended tasks.

Zero-shot object goal visual navigation

Object goal visual navigation is a challenging task that aims to guide a robot to find the target object based on its visual observation, and the target is limited to the classes pre-defined in the training stage. However, in real households, there may exist numerous target classes that the robot needs to deal with, and it is hard for all of these classes to be contained in the training stage. To address this challenge, we study the zero-shot object goal visual navigation task, which aims at guiding robots to find targets belonging to novel classes without any training samples. To this end, we also propose a novel zero-shot object navigation framework called semantic similarity network (SSNet). Our framework use the detection results and the cosine similarity between semantic word embeddings as input. Such type of input data has a weak correlation with classes and thus our framework has the ability to generalize the policy to novel classes. Extensive experiments on the AI2-THOR platform show that our model outperforms the baseline models in the zero-shot object navigation task, which proves the generalization ability of our model. Hybrid stability augmentation control of multi-rotor UAV in confined space based on adaptive backstepping control

This paper applies the UAV to the inspection of water diversion pipelines in hydropower stations. The diversion pipeline is an enclosed space, so the airflow disturbance caused by the rotation of the UAV blades and the strong air convection from the chimney effect have a great impact on the flight control of the UAV. Although the traditional linear control PID flight control algorithm has been widely used and can meet the requirements of general flight tasks, it cannot guarantee the stability of the system over a wide range. The inspection of a diversion line in an enclosed space requires high system stability and robustness of the UAV controller. In this paper, a hybrid stabilised adaptive backstepping control method is proposed. Firstly, a multi-rotor UAV model is analysed and transformed into a strict feedback form with external disturbances; then adaptive techniques are used to estimate the airflow disturbances caused by the blades, and the attitude and position tracking controllers are designed by combining backstepping control and PID control respectively; finally, the asymptotic stability of the system is ensured by constructing a Lyapunov function. The experimental data show that the flight controller designed in this paper has good robustness and tracking performance, and can better resist the disturbance caused by airflow disturbance in confined space.

Exploring Effective Information Utilization in Multi-Turn Topic-Driven Conversations

Conversations are always related to certain topics. However, it is challenging to fuse dialogue history and topic information from various sources at the same time in current dialogue generation models because of the input length limit of pre-trained language models (PLMs). In order to expand the information that PLMs can utilize, we encode topic and dialogue history information using certain prompts with multiple channels of Fusion-in-Decoder (FiD) and explore the influence of three different channel settings. In this paper, our experiments focus on a specific Chinese dataset named NaturalConv, where the conversation revolves around a piece of recent news. We thoroughly compared different dialogue models and different FiD channel settings. Empirical results show that by combining our proposed whole passage channel with additional history channel, our methods can achieve competitive performance on NaturalConv, making it possible to encode various information from excessively long texts.

Enhance Accuracy: Sensitivity and Uncertainty Theory in LiDAR Odometry and Mapping

Currently, the improvement of LiDAR poses estimation accuracy is an urgent need for mobile robots. Research indicates that diverse LiDAR points have different influences on the accuracy of pose estimation. This study aimed to select a good point set to enhance accuracy. Accordingly, the sensitivity and uncertainty of LiDAR point residuals were formulated as a fundamental basis for derivation and analysis. High-sensitivity and low -uncertainty point residual terms are preferred to achieve higher pose estimation accuracy. The proposed selection method has been theoretically proven to be capable of achieving a global statistical optimum. It was tested on artificial data and compared with the KITTI benchmark. It was also implemented in LiDAR odometry (LO) and LiDAR inertial odometry (LIO), both indoors and outdoors. The experiments revealed that utilizing selected LiDAR point residuals simultaneously enhances optimization accuracy, decreases residual terms, and guarantees real-time performance.

Holographic calculations of Rényi entropy from rotating topological black holes

We construct a new class of entanglement measures named "rotating Rényi entropy" by the holographic calculation of a rotating topological black hole belonging to the Petrov type-D class, we compute this kind of entropy for a spherical entangling surface of a vacuum state in the dual CFT. We find that the latter one could be conformally transformed to a thermal state on the boundary geometry of the rotating topological black hole with certain temperature. Then according to the angular velocity of the bulk black hole, we introduce the chemical potential in the boundary thermodynamics, which appears in the definition of the generalized Rényi entropy, and we presented the behaviors of this generalized Rényi entropy with the chemical potential and replica parameters.

KQA Pro: A Dataset with Explicit Compositional Programs for Complex Question Answering over Knowledge Base

Complex question answering over knowledge base (Complex KBQA) is challenging because it requires various compositional reasoning capabilities, such as multi-hop inference, attribute comparison, set operation. Existing benchmarks have some shortcomings that limit the development of Complex KBQA: 1) they only provide QA pairs without explicit reasoning processes; 2) questions are poor in diversity or scale. To this end, we introduce KQA Pro, a dataset for Complex KBQA including ~120K diverse natural language questions. We introduce a compositional and interpretable programming language KoPL to represent the reasoning process of complex questions. For each question, we provide the corresponding KoPL program and SPARQL query, so that KQA Pro serves for both KBQA and semantic parsing tasks. Experimental results show that SOTA KBQA methods cannot achieve promising results on KQA Pro as on current datasets, which suggests that KQA Pro is challenging and Complex KBQA requires further research efforts. We also treat KQA Pro as a diagnostic dataset for testing multiple reasoning skills, conduct a thorough evaluation of existing models and discuss further directions for Complex KBQA. Our codes and datasets can be obtained from https://github.com/shijx12/KQAPro_Baselines.
