On generalized $σ$-soluble groups

Let $σ=\{σ_{i} | i\in I\}$ be a partition of the set of all primes $\Bbb{P}$ and $G$ a finite group. Let $σ(G)=\{σ_{i} : σ_{i}\cap π(G)\ne \emptyset$. A set ${\cal H}$ of subgroups of $G$ is said to be a complete Hall $σ$-set of $G$ if every member $\ne 1$ of ${\cal H}$ is a Hall $σ_{i}$-subgroup of $G$ for some $i\in I$ and $\cal H$ contains exactly one Hall $σ_{i}$-subgroup of $G$ for every $i$ such that $σ_{i}\in σ(G)$. We say that $G$ is $σ$-full if $G$ possesses a complete Hall $σ$-set. A complete Hall $σ$-set $\cal H$ of $G$ is said to be a $σ$-basis of $G$ if every two subgroups $A, B \in\cal H$ are permutable, that is, $AB=BA$. In this paper, we study properties of finite groups having a $σ$-basis. In particular, we prove that if $G$ has a a $σ$-basis, then $G$ is generalized $σ$-soluble, that is, $G$ has a complete Hall $σ$-set and for every chief factor $H/K$ of $G$ we have $|σ(H/K)|\leq 2$. Moreover, answering to Problem 8.28 in [A.N. Skiba, On some results in the theory of finite partially soluble groups, Commun. Math. Stat., 4(3) (2016), 281--309], we prove the following Theorem A. Suppose that $G$ is $σ$-full. Then every complete Hall $σ$-set of $G$ forms a $σ$-basis of $G$ if and only if $G$ is generalized $σ$-soluble and for the automorphism group $G/C_{G}(H/K)$, induced by $G$ on any its chief factor $H/K$, we have either $σ(H/K)=σ(G/C_{G}(H/K))$ or $σ(H/K) =\{σ_{i}\}$ and $G/C_{G}(H/K)$ is a $σ_{i} \cup σ_{j}$-group for some $i\ne j$.

Robust predictions for an oscillatory bispectrum in Planck 2015 data from transient reductions in the speed of sound of the inflaton

We update the search for features in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) power spectrum due to transient reductions in the speed of sound, using Planck 2015 CMB temperature and polarisation data. We enlarge the parameter space to much higher oscillatory frequencies of the feature, and define a robust prior independent of the ansatz for the reduction, guaranteed to reproduce the assumptions of the theoretical model and exhaustive in the regime in which the feature is easily distinguishable from the baseline cosmology. We find a fit to the $\ell\approx20$--$40$ minus/plus structure in Planck TT power spectrum, as well as features spanning along the higher $\ell$'s ($\ell\approx100$--$1500$). For the last ones, we compute the correlated features that we expect to find in the CMB bispectrum, and asses their signal-to-noise and correlation to the ISW-lensing secondary bispectrum. We compare our findings to the shape-agnostic oscillatory template tested in Planck 2015, and we comment on some tantalising coincidences with some of the traits described in Planck's 2015 bispectrum data.

EFTCAMB/EFTCosmoMC: Numerical Notes v3.0

EFTCAMB/EFTCosmoMC are publicly available patches to the CAMB/CosmoMC codes implementing the effective field theory approach to single scalar field dark energy and modified gravity models. With the present numerical notes we provide a guide to the technical details of the code. Moreover we reproduce, as they appear in the code, the complete set of the modified equations and the expressions for all the other relevant quantities used to construct these patches. We submit these notes to the arXiv to grant full and permanent access to this material which provides very useful guidance to the numerical implementation of the EFT framework. We will update this set of notes when relevant modifications to the EFTCAMB/EFTCosmoMC codes will be released. The present version is based on the version of EFTCAMB/EFTCosmoMC Sep17.

Co-design of Safe and Efficient Networked Control Systems in Factory Automation with State-dependent Wireless Fading Channels

In factory automation, heterogeneous manufacturing processes need to be coordinated over wireless networks to achieve safety and efficiency. These wireless networks, however, are inherently unreliable due to shadow fading induced by the physical motion of the machinery. To assure both safety and efficiency, this paper proposes a state-dependent channel model that captures the interaction between the physical and communication systems. By adopting this channel model, sufficient conditions on the maximum allowable transmission interval are then derived to ensure stochastic safety for a nonlinear physical system controlled over a state-dependent wireless fading channel. Under these sufficient conditions, the safety and efficiency co-design problem is formulated as a constrained cooperative game, whose equilibria represent optimal control and transmission power policies that minimize a discounted joint-cost in an infinite horizon. This paper shows that the equilibria of the constrained game are solutions to a non-convex generalized geometric program, which are approximated by solving two convex programs. The optimality gap is quantified as a function of the size of the approximation region in convex programs, and asymptotically converges to zero by adopting a branch-bound algorithm. Simulation results of a networked robotic arm and a forklift truck are presented to verify the proposed co-design method.

On one generalization of modular subgroups

Let $G$ be a finite group. If $M_n < M_{n-1} < \ldots < M_1 < M_{0}=G $ where $M_i$ is a maximal subgroup of $M_{i-1}$ for all $i=1, \ldots ,n$, then $M_n $ ($n > 0$) is an \emph{$n$-maximal subgroup} of $G$. A subgroup $M$ of $G$ is called \emph{modular} if the following conditions are held: (i) $\langle X, M \cap Z \rangle=\langle X, M \rangle \cap Z$ for all $X \leq G, Z \leq G$ such that $X \leq Z$, and (ii) $\langle M, Y \cap Z \rangle=\langle M, Y \rangle \cap Z$ for all $Y \leq G, Z \leq G$ such that $M \leq Z$. In this paper, we study finite groups whose $n$-maximal subgroups are modular.

Unraveling Energetic Disorder in Organic Bulk Heterojunction Photovoltaics by Capacitance-Voltage Spectroscopy

Organic semiconductors possess an intrinsic energetic disorder characteristic, which holds an exceptionally important role for understanding organic photovoltaic (OPV) operation and future optimization. We performed illumination intensity dependence of capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements in PIDTDTQx:PC70BM based organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaics in working conditions. Energetic disorder profiles for the photo-active layer, PIDTDTQx:PC70BM, changed significantly when different interfaces were involved. The effects of energetic disorder that could be reflected from C-V profiles are incorporated through an exponential or Gaussian model of density of states (DOS), or a combination of these two. Results underlie that an identical organic blend in BHJ solar cells exhibits different energetic disorder when it interacts with various interfaces. It may, thus, has a certain impact on OPV performances, such as open-circuit voltage (V_oc ). Our study provides device physicists a different perspective view for tailoring the organic energetic disorder parameter via interfaces in order to enhance photo-electron conversion efficiencies (PCE).

A Unified Analysis of Stochastic Optimization Methods Using Jump System Theory and Quadratic Constraints

We develop a simple routine unifying the analysis of several important recently-developed stochastic optimization methods including SAGA, Finito, and stochastic dual coordinate ascent (SDCA). First, we show an intrinsic connection between stochastic optimization methods and dynamic jump systems, and propose a general jump system model for stochastic optimization methods. Our proposed model recovers SAGA, SDCA, Finito, and SAG as special cases. Then we combine jump system theory with several simple quadratic inequalities to derive sufficient conditions for convergence rate certifications of the proposed jump system model under various assumptions (with or without individual convexity, etc). The derived conditions are linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) whose sizes roughly scale with the size of the training set. We make use of the symmetry in the stochastic optimization methods and reduce these LMIs to some equivalent small LMIs whose sizes are at most 3 by 3. We solve these small LMIs to provide analytical proofs of new convergence rates for SAGA, Finito and SDCA (with or without individual convexity). We also explain why our proposed LMI fails in analyzing SAG. We reveal a key difference between SAG and other methods, and briefly discuss how to extend our LMI analysis for SAG. An advantage of our approach is that the proposed analysis can be automated for a large class of stochastic methods under various assumptions (with or without individual convexity, etc).

Dissipativity Theory for Nesterov's Accelerated Method

In this paper, we adapt the control theoretic concept of dissipativity theory to provide a natural understanding of Nesterov's accelerated method. Our theory ties rigorous convergence rate analysis to the physically intuitive notion of energy dissipation. Moreover, dissipativity allows one to efficiently construct Lyapunov functions (either numerically or analytically) by solving a small semidefinite program. Using novel supply rate functions, we show how to recover known rate bounds for Nesterov's method and we generalize the approach to certify both linear and sublinear rates in a variety of settings. Finally, we link the continuous-time version of dissipativity to recent works on algorithm analysis that use discretizations of ordinary differential equations.

An axion-like scalar field environment effect on binary black hole merger

Environment, such as the accretion disk, could modify the signal of the gravitational wave from the astrophysical black hole binaries. In this article, we model the matter field around the intermediate-mass binary black holes by means of an axion-like scalar field and investigate their joint evolution. In details, we consider the equal mass binary black holes surrounded by a shell of axion-like scalar field both in spherical symmetric and non-spherical symmetric cases, and with different strength of the scalar field. Our result shows that the environmental scalar field could essentially modify the dynamics. Firstly, in the spherical symmetric case, with increasing of the scalar field strength, the number of circular orbit of the binary black hole is reduced. It means that the scalar field could significantly accelerate the merger process. Secondly, once the scalar field strength exceeds certain critical value, the scalar field could collapse into a third black hole with its mass being larger than the binary. Consequently, the new black hole collapsed from the environmental scalar field could accrete the binary promptly and the binary collides head-on between each other. In this process, there is almost no any quadrupole signal produced, namely the gravitational wave is greatly suppressed. Thirdly, when the scalar field strength is relatively smaller than the critical value, the black hole orbit could develop eccentricity through the accretion of the scalar field. Fourthly, during the initial stage of the inspire, the gravitational attractive force from the axion-like scalar field could induce a sudden turn in the binary orbits, hence result in a transient wiggle in the gravitational waveform. Finally, in the non-spherical case, the scalar field could gravitationally attract the binary moving toward the mass center of the scalar field and slow down the merger process.

A Learning Based Optimal Human Robot Collaboration with Linear Temporal Logic Constraints

This paper considers an optimal task allocation problem for human robot collaboration in human robot systems with persistent tasks. Such human robot systems consist of human operators and intelligent robots collaborating with each other to accomplish complex tasks that cannot be done by either part alone. The system objective is to maximize the probability of successfully executing persistent tasks that are formulated as linear temporal logic specifications and minimize the average cost between consecutive visits of a particular proposition. This paper proposes to model the human robot collaboration under a framework with the composition of multiple Markov Decision Process (MDP) with possibly unknown transition probabilities, which characterizes how human cognitive states, such as human trust and fatigue, stochastically change with the robot performance. Under the unknown MDP models, an algorithm is developed to learn the model and obtain an optimal task allocation policy that minimizes the expected average cost for each task cycle and maximizes the probability of satisfying linear temporal logic constraints. Moreover, this paper shows that the difference between the optimal policy based on the learned model and that based on the underlying ground truth model can be bounded by arbitrarily small constant and large confidence level with sufficient samples. The case study of an assembly process demonstrates the effectiveness and benefits of our proposed learning based human robot collaboration.

A note on the initial conditions within the effective field theory approach of cosmic acceleration

By using the effective field theory approach, we investigate the role of initial condition for the dark energy or modified gravity models. In details, we consider the constant and linear parametrization of the effective Newton constant models. Firstly, under the adiabatic assumption, the correction from the extra scalar degree of freedom in the beyond $Λ$CDM model is found to be negligible. The dominant ingredient in this setup is the primordial curvature perturbation originated from inflation mechanism, and the energy budget of the matter components is not very crucial. Secondly, the iso-curvature perturbation sourced by the extra scalar field is studied. For the constant and linear model of the effective Newton constant, there is no such kind of scalar mode exist. For the quadratic model, there is a non-trivial one. However, the amplitude of the scalar field is damped away very fast on all scales. Consequently, it could not support a reasonable structure formation. Finally, we study the importance of the setup of the scalar field starting time. By setting different turn-on time, namely $a=10^{-2} $ and $a=10^{-7} $, we compare the cosmic microwave background radiation temperature, lensing deflection angle auto-correlation function as well as the matter power spectrum in the constant and linear model. We find there is an order of $\mathcal{O}(1\%)$ difference in the observable spectra for constant model, while for the linear model, it is smaller than $\mathcal{O}(0.1\%)$.

Exploring Cosmic Origins with CORE: Inflation

We forecast the scientific capabilities to improve our understanding of cosmic inflation of CORE, a proposed CMB space satellite submitted in response to the ESA fifth call for a medium-size mission opportunity. The CORE satellite will map the CMB anisotropies in temperature and polarization in 19 frequency channels spanning the range 60-600 GHz. CORE will have an aggregate noise sensitivity of $1.7 μ$K$\cdot \,$arcmin and an angular resolution of 5' at 200 GHz. We explore the impact of telescope size and noise sensitivity on the inflation science return by making forecasts for several instrumental configurations. This study assumes that the lower and higher frequency channels suffice to remove foreground contaminations and complements other related studies of component separation and systematic effects, which will be reported in other papers of the series "Exploring Cosmic Origins with CORE." We forecast the capability to determine key inflationary parameters, to lower the detection limit for the tensor-to-scalar ratio down to the $10^{-3}$ level, to chart the landscape of single field slow-roll inflationary models, to constrain the epoch of reheating, thus connecting inflation to the standard radiation-matter dominated Big Bang era, to reconstruct the primordial power spectrum, to constrain the contribution from isocurvature perturbations to the $10^{-3}$ level, to improve constraints on the cosmic string tension to a level below the presumptive GUT scale, and to improve the current measurements of primordial non-Gaussianities down to the $f_{NL}^{\rm local} < 1$ level. For all the models explored, CORE alone will improve significantly on the present constraints on the physics of inflation. Its capabilities will be further enhanced by combining with complementary future cosmological observations.

Hiding neutrino mass in modified gravity cosmologies

Cosmological observables show a dependence with the neutrino mass, which is partially degenerate with parameters of extended models of gravity. We study and explore this degeneracy in Horndeski generalized scalar-tensor theories of gravity. Using forecasted cosmic microwave background and galaxy power spectrum datasets, we find that a single parameter in the linear regime of the effective theory dominates the correlation with the total neutrino mass. For any given mass, a particular value of this parameter approximately cancels the power suppression due to the neutrino mass at a given redshift. The extent of the cancellation of this degeneracy depends on the cosmological large-scale structure data used at different redshifts. We constrain the parameters and functions of the effective gravity theory and determine the influence of gravity on the determination of the neutrino mass from present and future surveys.

Control Interpretations for First-Order Optimization Methods

First-order iterative optimization methods play a fundamental role in large scale optimization and machine learning. This paper presents control interpretations for such optimization methods. First, we give loop-shaping interpretations for several existing optimization methods and show that they are composed of basic control elements such as PID and lag compensators. Next, we apply the small gain theorem to draw a connection between the convergence rate analysis of optimization methods and the input-output gain computations of certain complementary sensitivity functions. These connections suggest that standard classical control synthesis tools may be brought to bear on the design of optimization algorithms.

Optimal Tracking Performance of Control Systems with Two-Channel Constraints

This paper focuses on the tracking performance limitation for a class of networked control systems(NCSs) with two-channel constraints. In communication channels, we consider bandwidth, energy constraints and additive colored Gaussian noise(ACGN) simultaneously. In plant, non-minimal zeros and unstable poles are considered; multi-repeated zeros and poles are also applicable. To obtain the optimal performance, the two-parameter controller is adopted. The theoretical results show that the optimal tracking performance is influenced by the non-minimum phase zeros, unstable poles, gain at all frequencies of the given plant, and the reference input signal for NCSs. Moreover, the performance limitation is also affected by the limited bandwidth, additive colored Gaussian noise, and the corresponding multiples for the non-minimum phase zeros and unstable poles. Additionally, the channel minimal input power constraints are given under the condition ensuring the stability of the system and acquiring system performance limitation. Finally, simulation examples are given to illustrate the theoretical results.

An Interval-Based Bayesian Generative Model for Human Complex Activity Recognition

Complex activity recognition is challenging due to the inherent uncertainty and diversity of performing a complex activity. Normally, each instance of a complex activity has its own configuration of atomic actions and their temporal dependencies. We propose in this paper an atomic action-based Bayesian model that constructs Allen's interval relation networks to characterize complex activities with structural varieties in a probabilistic generative way: By introducing latent variables from the Chinese restaurant process, our approach is able to capture all possible styles of a particular complex activity as a unique set of distributions over atomic actions and relations. We also show that local temporal dependencies can be retained and are globally consistent in the resulting interval network. Moreover, network structure can be learned from empirical data. A new dataset of complex hand activities has been constructed and made publicly available, which is much larger in size than any existing datasets. Empirical evaluations on benchmark datasets as well as our in-house dataset demonstrate the competitiveness of our approach.

Chiral Extrapolation of the Sigma Resonance

We analyze recent results on isoscalar $ππ$ scattering from a $N_f=2+1$ lattice simulation by the HadronSpectrum collaboration by re-summing the two-flavor chiral scattering amplitude of the next-to-leading order in the so-called inverse amplitude method. The lattice data can be well extrapolated to the physical pion mass. We also find that both $I=0$ and $I=1$ lattice data can be described simultaneously for pion masses up to $M_π=236$ MeV.

Distributed controller-estimator for target tracking of networked robotic systems under sampled interaction

This paper investigates the target tracking problem for networked robotic systems (NRSs) under sampled interaction. The target is assumed to be time-varying and described by a second-order oscillator. Two novel distributed controller-estimator algorithms (DCEA), which consist of both continuous and discontinuous signals, are presented. Based on the properties of small-value norms and Lyapunov stability theory, the conditions on the interaction topology, the sampling period, and the other control parameters are given such that the practical stability of the tracking error is achieved and the stability region is regulated quantitatively. The advantages of the presented DCEA are illustrated by comparisons with each other and the existing coordination algorithms. Simulation examples are given to demonstrate the theoretical results.
