Improved Consistent Weighted Sampling Revisited

Min-Hash is a popular technique for efficiently estimating the Jaccard similarity of binary sets. Consistent Weighted Sampling (CWS) generalizes the Min-Hash scheme to sketch weighted sets and has drawn increasing interest from the community. Due to its constant-time complexity independent of the values of the weights, Improved CWS (ICWS) is considered as the state-of-the-art CWS algorithm. In this paper, we revisit ICWS and analyze its underlying mechanism to show that there actually exists dependence between the two components of the hash-code produced by ICWS, which violates the condition of independence. To remedy the problem, we propose an Improved ICWS (I$^2$CWS) algorithm which not only shares the same theoretical computational complexity as ICWS but also abides by the required conditions of the CWS scheme. The experimental results on a number of synthetic data sets and real-world text data sets demonstrate that our I$^2$CWS algorithm can estimate the Jaccard similarity more accurately, and also compete with or outperform the compared methods, including ICWS, in classification and top-$K$ retrieval, after relieving the underlying dependence.

Polar Coding for Parallel Gaussian Channel

In this paper, we propose a Polar coding scheme for parallel Gaussian channels. The encoder knows the sum rate of the parallel channels but does not know the rate of any channel. By using the nesting property of Polar code, we design a coding/decoding scheme to achieve the sum rates.

Towards understanding the geometry effects on fracture in thin elastic shells

We examine how shell geometry affects fracture. As suggested by previous results and our own phase-field simulations, shell shape dramatically affects crack evolution and the effective toughness of the shell structure. To gain insight and eventually develop new concepts for optimizing the design of thin shell structures, we derive the configurational force conjugate to crack extension for Koiter's linear thin shell theory. We identify the conservative contribution to this force through an Eshelby tensor, as well as non-conservative contributions arising from curvature.

Investigating multi-frequency pulse profiles of PSRs B0329+54 and B1642-03 in an inverse Compton scattering (ICS) model

The emission geometries, e.g. the emission region height, the beam shape, and radius-to-frequency mapping, are important predictions of pulsar radiation model. The multi-band radio observations carry such valuable information. In this paper, we study two bright pulsars, (PSRs B0329+54 and B1642-03) and observe them in high frequency (2.5 GHz, 5 GHz, and 8 GHz). The newly acquired data together with historical archive provide an atlas of multi-frequency profiles spanning from 100 MHz to 10 GHz. We study the frequency evolution of pulse profiles and the radiation regions with the these data. We firstly fit the pulse profiles with Gaussian functions to determine the phase of each component, and then calculate the radiation altitudes of different emission components and the radiation regions. We find that the inverse Compton scattering (ICS) model can reproduce the radiation geometry of these two pulsars. But for PSR B0329+54 the radiation can be generated in either annular gap (AG) or core gap (CG), while the radiation of PSR B1642-03 can only be generated in the CG. This difference is caused by the inclination angle and the impact angle of these two pulsars. The relation of beaming angle (the angle between the radiation direction and the magnetic axis) and the radiation altitudes versus frequency is also presented by modelling the beam-frequency evolution in the ICS model. The multi-band pulse profiles of these two pulsars can be described well by the ICS model combined with the CG and AG.

Stochastic Patching Process

Stochastic partition models tailor a product space into a number of rectangular regions such that the data within each region exhibit certain types of homogeneity. Due to constraints of partition strategy, existing models may cause unnecessary dissections in sparse regions when fitting data in dense regions. To alleviate this limitation, we propose a parsimonious partition model, named Stochastic Patching Process (SPP), to deal with multi-dimensional arrays. SPP adopts an "enclosing" strategy to attach rectangular patches to dense regions. SPP is self-consistent such that it can be extended to infinite arrays. We apply SPP to relational modeling and the experimental results validate its merit compared to the state-of-the-arts.

A Unified Approach for Drawdown (Drawup) of Time-Homogeneous Markov Processes

Drawdown (resp. drawup) of a stochastic process, also referred as the reflected process at its supremum (resp. infimum), has wide applications in many areas including financial risk management, actuarial mathematics and statistics. In this paper, for general time-homogeneous Markov processes, we study the joint law of the first passage time of the drawdown (resp. drawup) process, its overshoot, and the maximum of the underlying process at this first passage time. By using short-time pathwise analysis, under some mild regularity conditions, the joint law of the three drawdown quantities is shown to be the unique solution to an integral equation which is expressed in terms of fundamental two-sided exit quantities of the underlying process. Explicit forms for this joint law are found when the Markov process has only one-sided jumps or is a Lévy process (possibly with two-sided jumps). The proposed methodology provides a unified approach to study various drawdown quantities for the general class of time-homogeneous Markov processes.

Mechanism Design in Social Networks

This paper studies an auction design problem for a seller to sell a commodity in a social network, where each individual (the seller or a buyer) can only communicate with her neighbors. The challenge to the seller is to design a mechanism to incentivize the buyers, who are aware of the auction, to further propagate the information to their neighbors so that more buyers will participate in the auction and hence, the seller will be able to make a higher revenue. We propose a novel auction mechanism, called information diffusion mechanism (IDM), which incentivizes the buyers to not only truthfully report their valuations on the commodity to the seller, but also further propagate the auction information to all their neighbors. In comparison, the direct extension of the well-known Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) mechanism in social networks can also incentivize the information diffusion, but it will decrease the seller's revenue or even lead to a deficit sometimes. The formalization of the problem has not yet been addressed in the literature of mechanism design and our solution is very significant in the presence of large-scale online social networks.

Improving Efficiency of SVM k-fold Cross-validation by Alpha Seeding

The k-fold cross-validation is commonly used to evaluate the effectiveness of SVMs with the selected hyper-parameters. It is known that the SVM k-fold cross-validation is expensive, since it requires training k SVMs. However, little work has explored reusing the h-th SVM for training the (h+1)-th SVM for improving the efficiency of k-fold cross-validation. In this paper, we propose three algorithms that reuse the h-th SVM for improving the efficiency of training the (h+1)-th SVM. Our key idea is to efficiently identify the support vectors and to accurately estimate their associated weights (also called alpha values) of the next SVM by using the previous SVM. Our experimental results show that our algorithms are several times faster than the k-fold cross-validation which does not make use of the previously trained SVM. Moreover, our algorithms produce the same results (hence same accuracy) as the k-fold cross-validation which does not make use of the previously trained SVM.

Hunting for Heavy Majorana Neutrinos with Lepton Number Violating Signatures at LHC

The neutrinophilic two-Higgs-doublet model ($ν$2HDM) provides a natural way to generate tiny neutrino mass from interactions with the new doublet scalar $Φ_ν$ ($H^\pm,~H,~A$) and singlet neutrinos $N_R$ of TeV scale. In this paper, we perform detailed simulations for the lepton number violating (LNV) signatures at LHC arising from cascade decays of the new scalars and neutrinos with the mass order $m_{N_R}<m_{Φ_ν}$. Under constraints from lepton flavor violating processes and direct collider searches, their decay properties are explored and lead to three types of LNV signatures: $2\ell^\pm 4j+\cancel{E}_T$, $3\ell^\pm 4j+\cancel{E}_T$, and $3\ell^\pm\ell^\mp 4j$. We find that the same-sign trilepton signature $3\ell^\pm4j+\cancel{E}_T$ is quite unique and is the most promising discovery channel at the high-luminosity LHC. Our analysis also yields the $95\%$ C.L. exclusion limits in the plane of the $Φ_ν$ and $N_R$ masses at 13 (14) TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 100~(3000)/fb.

Pseudo Sequence based 2-D hierarchical reference structure for Light-Field Image Compression

In this paper, we present a novel pseudo sequence based 2-D hierarchical reference structure for light-field image compression. In the proposed scheme, we first decompose the light-field image into multiple views and organize them into a 2-D coding structure according to the spatial coordinates of the corresponding microlens. Then we mainly develop three technologies to optimize the 2-D coding structure. First, we divide all the views into four quadrants, and all the views are encoded one quadrant after another to reduce the reference buffer size as much as possible. Inside each quadrant, all the views are encoded hierarchically to fully exploit the correlations between different views. Second, we propose to use the distance between the current view and its reference views as the criteria for selecting better reference frames for each inter view. Third, we propose to use the spatial relative positions between different views to achieve more accurate motion vector scaling. The whole scheme is implemented in the reference software of High Efficiency Video Coding. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed novel pseudo-sequence based 2-D hierarchical structure can achieve maximum 14.2% bit-rate savings compared with the state-of-the-art light-field image compression method.

Efficient Multiple Line-Based Intra Prediction for HEVC

Traditional intra prediction usually utilizes the nearest reference line to generate the predicted block when considering strong spatial correlation. However, this kind of single line-based method does not always work well due to at least two issues. One is the incoherence caused by the signal noise or the texture of other object, where this texture deviates from the inherent texture of the current block. The other reason is that the nearest reference line usually has worse reconstruction quality in block-based video coding. Due to these two issues, this paper proposes an efficient multiple line-based intra prediction scheme to improve coding efficiency. Besides the nearest reference line, further reference lines are also utilized. The further reference lines with relatively higher quality can provide potential better prediction. At the same time, the residue compensation is introduced to calibrate the prediction of boundary regions in a block when we utilize further reference lines. To speed up the encoding process, this paper designs several fast algorithms. Experimental results show that, compared with HM-16.9, the proposed fast search method achieves 2.0% bit saving on average and up to 3.7%, with increasing the encoding time by 112%.

Induced robust topological order on an ordinary insulator hetero-structured with a strong topological insulator

Topological states of matter originate from distinct topological electronic structures of materials. As for strong topological insulators (STIs), the topological surface (interface) is a direct consequence of electronic structure transition between materials categorized to different topological genus. Therefore, it is fundamentally interesting if such topological character can be manipulated. Besides tuning the crystal field and the strength of spin-orbital coupling (e.g., by external strain, or chemical doping), there is currently rare report on topological state induced in ordinary insulators (OIs) by the heterostructure of OI/STI. Here we report the observation of a Dirac cone topological surface state (TSS) induced on the Sb2Se3 layer up to 15 nm thick in the OI/STI heterostructure, in sharp contrast with the OI/OI heterostructure where no sign of TSS can be observed. This is evident for an induced topological state in an OI by heterostructure.

A critical point in Sr2-xIrO4 and less distorted IrO6 octahedra induced by deep Sr-vacancies

For the Sr2-xIrO4 system, recent work pointed out the abnormal electronic and magnetic properties around the critical point. Here, to understand Sr-vacancy effect on spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator Sr2IrO4, the electronic structure and local structure distortion for Sr2-xIrO4 system have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). By comparing the intensity of white-line features at the IrL2,3-edge x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), we observe a sudden rise of the branching ratio in the vicinity of the critical point.Further analysis on theIrL3 -edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and calculated data demonstrated that the abrupt enhancement of the branching ratio is intimately related to the less distorted IrO6 octahedra induced by deep Sr-vacancies, which in turn alters the relatively strength of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and crystal electric field (CEF)that would dictate the abnormal behavior of electronic and magnetic structure near the critical point.

La-doping effect on spin-orbit coupled Sr2IrO4 probed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

Sr2IrO4 was predicted to be an unconventional superconductor upon carrier doping since it highly resembles the high-temperature cuprates. Here, to understand carrier doping effect on spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator Sr2IrO4, the electronic structure and local structure distortion for Sr2-xLaxIrO4 system have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). By comparing the intensity of white-line features at the Ir L2,3 absorption edges, we observe remarkably large branching ratios in La-doped compounds, greater than that of the parent material Sr2IrO4, suggesting a strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) for Sr2IrO4-based system. Moreover, extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra demonstrate more regular IrO6 octahedra, i.e. the weakened crystal electric field (CEF) versus La-doping. By theoretical calculations, the synergistic effect of regular IrO6 octahedra and electron doping is established, which accounts for the transition from a Mott insulator to a conductive state in Sr2-xLaxIrO4-based system.

Insulator-metal transition in deep Sr-vacant spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr2IrO4

Sr2IrO4 exhibits a novel insulating state assisted by spin-orbit interactions. A series of polycrystalline samples of Sr2-xIrO4 have been synthesized. It is found that deep Sr-vacancies of Sr2-xIrO4 greatly reduce the rotation of IrO6 octahedral, and more importantly, a significant structural change occurs around x = 0.48 in both the lattice constants and the Ir-O2 bond length. An insulator-metal transition (IMT) appears and a non-Fermi-liquid metallic electronic state has been proved at x>0.48 in Sr2-xIrO4. Furthermore, a sudden drop emerges of the localization temperature T0 and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition temperature TN in Sr1.5IrO4, together with the Curie-Weiss temperature reversing its sign. These abrupt changes are closely related with the reduction of the rotation crystal structure.

Chromatic Effect for THz Generation in a Novel Wave-front Tilt Scheme

Deriving single or few cycle terahertz pulse (THz) by intense femtosecond laser through cascaded optical rectification in electro-optic crystals is a crucial technique in cutting-edge time-resolved spectroscopy to characterize micro-scale structures and ultrafast dynamics. In the past decade, lithium niobate (LN) crystal implementation of wave-front tilt scheme has been prevalently used, while painstaking efforts have been invested in order to achieve higher THz conversion efficiency. In this research we developed a brand new type of LN crystal possessing dual-face-cut and Brewster coupling, and conducted experimental and simulative investigation systematically to optimize the multi-dimensionally entangled parameters in THz generation, predicting the extreme conversion efficiency of 10% is potentially promising at the THz absorption coefficient of 0.5cm-1. More remarkably, we first discovered that the chirp of the driving laser pulse plays a decisive role in the wave-front tilt scheme, and the THz generation efficiency could be enhanced tremendously by applying an appropriate chirp.

Low-Delay Distributed Source Coding for Time-Varying Sources with Unknown Statistics

We consider a system in which two nodes take correlated measurements of a random source with time-varying and unknown statistics. The observations of the source at the first node are to be losslessly replicated with a given probability of outage at the second node, which receives data from the first node over a constant-rate errorless channel. We develop a system and associated strategies for joint distributed source coding (encoding and decoding) and transmission control in order to achieve low end-to-end delay. Slepian-Wolf coding in its traditional form cannot be applied in our scenario, since the encoder requires the joint statistics of the observations and the associated decoding delay is very high. We analytically evaluate the performance of our strategies and show that the delay achieved by them are order optimal, as the conditional entropy of the source approaches to the channel rate. We also evaluate the performance of our algorithms based on real-world experiments using two cameras recording videos of a scene at different angles. Having realized our schemes, we demonstrated that, even with a very low-complexity quantizer, a compression ratio of approximately 50% is achievable for lossless replication at the decoder, at an average delay of a few seconds.

On magnitude, asymptotics and duration of drawdowns for Lévy models

This paper considers magnitude, asymptotics and duration of drawdowns for some Lévy processes. First, we revisit some existing results on the magnitude of drawdowns for spectrally negative Lévy processes using an approximation approach. For any spectrally negative Lévy process whose scale functions are well-behaved at $0+$, we then study the asymptotics of drawdown quantities when the threshold of drawdown magnitude approaches zero. We also show that such asymptotics is robust to perturbations of additional positive compound Poisson jumps. Finally, thanks to the asymptotic results and some recent works on the running maximum of Lévy processes, we derive the law of duration of drawdowns for a large class of Lévy processes (with a general spectrally negative part plus a positive compound Poisson structure). The duration of drawdowns is also known as the "Time to Recover" (TTR) the historical maximum, which is a widely used performance measure in the fund management industry. We find that the law of duration of drawdowns qualitatively depends on the path type of the spectrally negative component of the underlying Lévy process.
