Massive MIMO-ISAC System With 1-Bit ADCs/DACs

This paper investigates a hardware-efficient massive multiple-input multiple-output integrated sensing and communication (MIMO-ISAC) system with 1-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs)/digital-to-analog converters (DACs). The proposed system, referred to as 1BitISAC, employs 1-bit DACs at the ISAC transmitter and 1-bit ADCs at the sensing receiver, achieving significant reductions in power consumption and hardware costs. For such kind of systems, two 1BitISAC joint transceiver designs, i.e., i) quality of service constrained 1BitISAC design and ii) quality of detection constrained design, are considered and the corresponding problems are formulated. In order to address these problems, we thoroughly analyze the radar detection performance after 1-bit ADCs quantization and the communication bit error rate. This analysis yields new design insights and leads to unique radar and communication metrics, which enables us to simplify the original problems and employ majorization-minimization and integer linear programming methods to solve the problems. Numerical results are provided to validate the performance analysis of the proposed 1BitISAC and to compare with other ISAC configurations. The superiority of the proposed 1BitISAC system in terms of balancing ISAC performance and energy efficiency is also demonstrated.

Elucidating the thermal spike effect by using a coupled classical oscillator model

Atomic heating is a fundamental phenomenon governed by the thermal spike effect during energetic deposition. This work presented another insight into thermal spike using a coupled classical oscillator model instead of a typical heat diffusion model. The temperature profile of deposited atoms was replaced by oscillator amplitude as an energy descriptor. Solving associated partial differential equations (PDEs)suggests the efficiency of energy transfer from the coupled hot to cold oscillators essentially relies on the atomic distance r and the spring constant k. The solution towards the damped wave equation further emphasize that a localized thermal fluctuation during energy propagation.

Hybrid Beamforming in mmWave Dual-Function Radar-Communication Systems: Models, Technologies, and Challenges

As a promising technology in beyond-5G (B5G) and 6G, dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) aims to ensure both radar sensing and communication on a single integrated platform with unified signaling schemes. To achieve accurate sensing and reliable communication, large-scale arrays are anticipated to be implemented in such systems, which brings out the prominent issues on hardware cost and power consumption. To address these issues, hybrid beamforming (HBF), beyond its successful deployment in communication-only systems, could be a promising approach in the emerging DFRC ones. In this article, we investigate the development of the HBF techniques on the DFRC system in a self-contained manner. Specifically, we first introduce the basics of the HBF based DFRC system, where the system model and different receive modes are discussed with focus. Then we illustrate the corresponding design principles, which span from the performance metrics and optimization formulations to the design approaches and our preliminary results. Finally, potential extension and key research opportunities, such as the combination with the reconfigurable intelligent surface, are discussed concisely.

Joint DOA estimation and distorted sensor detection under entangled low-rank and row-sparse constraints

The problem of joint direction-of-arrival estimation and distorted sensor detection has received a lot of attention in recent decades. Most state-of-the-art work formulated such a problem via low-rank and row-sparse decomposition, where the low-rank and row-sparse components were treated in an isolated manner. Such a formulation results in a performance loss. Differently, in this paper, we entangle the low-rank and row-sparse components by exploring their inherent connection. Furthermore, we take into account the maximal distortion level of the sensors. An alternating optimization scheme is proposed to solve the low-rank component and the sparse component, where a closed-form solution is derived for the low-rank component and a quadratic programming is developed for the sparse component. Numerical results exhibit the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Understanding binary phase separation towards Cu-C nanocrystalline-amorphous composites

The nanocrystalline-amorphous textures are commonly observed in the coatings synthesized by energetic deposition. This work reports a theoretical study towards binary Cu-C phase separation.By performing a MD simulation using the LAMMPS instead of classical PFK methodology, we theoretically explained how the initial pressure and Cu concentration fundamentally determines Cu nanocrystalline's final morphology and grain size, which gives a novel insight into binary phase separation and the evolution mechanism of nanocrystalline-amorphous structures during energetic deposition.

Muon radiography experiments on the subway overburden structure detection

Muon radiography is an innovative and non-destructive technique for internal density structure imaging, based on measuring the attenuation of cosmic-ray muons after they penetrate the target. Due to the strong penetration ability of muons, the detection range of muon radiography can reach the order of hundreds of meters or even kilometers. Using a portable muon detector composed of plastic scintillators and silicon photomultipliers, we performed a short-duration(1h) flux scanning experiment of the overburden above the platform and tunnel of the Xiaoying West Road subway station under construction. With the observation direction facing up, the detector is placed on the north side of the track and moved eastward from the platform section inside the station to the tunnel section. The scanning length is 264m and a total of 21 locations are observed. By comparing the observed and predicted values of the muon survival ratio at different locations, the experiment accurately detects the jump in thickness at the interface of the platform section and tunnel section. Furthermore, unknown anomalies caused by random placed light brick piles and side passage mouth above the observation locations are detected and confirmed later. This experiment verifies the feasibility of using natural muons to quickly detect abnormal structures of the overburden of tunnel, and shows that muon radiography has broad application prospects in tunnel safety and other similar aspects.

Dynamic Power and Rate Allocation for NOMA Based Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Communications

In this paper, a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) based downlink vehicle-to-infrastructure network is considered. Particularly, we focus on the specific case of two users, one of which requires reliable road-safety-critical data transmission while the other pursues high-capacity services, with extension to multi-user scenarios. Leveraging only slow fading of channel state information, the transmit powers and target rates are jointly optimized to maximize the expected sum throughput of the capacity hungry user, with consideration of the payload delivery outage probability of the reliability sensitive user. The optimization is formulated as an unconstrained single-objective sequential decision problem via introducing a dual variable. A dynamic programming based algorithm is then designed to derive the optimal policy that maximizes the Lagrangian. Afterwards, a bisection search based method is proposed to find the optimal dual variable. The proposed scheme is shown by numerical results to be superior to the baseline methods in terms of the expected return, performance region, and objective value.

MESD: Exploring Optical Flow Assessment on Edge of Motion Objects with Motion Edge Structure Difference

The optical flow estimation has been assessed in various applications. In this paper, we propose a novel method named motion edge structure difference(MESD) to assess estimation errors of optical flow fields on edge of motion objects. We implement comparison experiments for MESD by evaluating five representative optical flow algorithms on four popular benchmarks: MPI Sintel, Middlebury, KITTI 2012 and KITTI 2015. Our experimental results demonstrate that MESD can reasonably and discriminatively assess estimation errors of optical flow fields on motion edge. The results indicate that MESD could be a supplementary metric to existing general assessment metrics for evaluating optical flow algorithms in related computer vision applications.

A Possible kilonova powered by magnetic wind from a newborn black hole

The merger of binary neutron stars (NS-NS) as the progenitor of short Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) has been confirmed by the discovery of the association of the gravitational wave (GW) event GW170817 with GRB 170817A. However, the merger product of binary NS remains an open question. An X-ray plateau followed by a steep decay ("internal plateau") has been found in some short GRBs, implying that a supra-massive magnetar operates as the merger remnant and then collapses into a newborn black hole (BH) at the end of the plateau. X-ray bump or second-plateau following the "internal plateau" is considered as the expected signature from the fallback accretion onto this newborn BH through Blandford-Znajek mechanism (BZ). At the same time, a nearly isotropic wind driven by Blandford-Paynemechanism (BP) from the newborn BH's disk can produce a bright kilonova. Therefore, the bright kilonova observation for a short GRB with "internal plateau" (and followed by X-ray bump or second-plateau) provides further evidence for this scenario. In this paper, we find that GRB 160821B is a candidate of such a case, and the kilonova emission of GRB 160821B is possibly powered by the BP wind from a newborn BH. Future GW detection of GRB 160821B-like events may provide further support to this scenario, enable us to investigate the properties of the magnetar and the newborn BH, and constrain the equation of state of neutron stars.

Ocean Reverberation Suppression via Matrix Completion with Sensor Failure

In the ocean environment, reverberation is a common and strong interference which significantly degrades the performance of target bearing estimation. Meanwhile, sensor failure is inevitable in actual sonar deployment as the underwater scene is complicated. Therefore, it is a challenge for target detection in the ocean reverberation with sensor failure. To address this issue, we propose an improved approach based on the principle of low rank characteristics of matrix in this paper. Firstly, we utilize Hankel structured matrix to counteract the problem of sensor failure. Then, the algorithm of matrix completion (MC) based on l1-norm and l2-norm are exploited to recover the true signal matrix from the corrupted received matrix. Numerical results demonstrate that compared with other related methods, the l1-norm provides better capability in the probability of recovery and shows the best robustness of bearing estimation with the narrow beam width and low sidelobe. Moreover, the proposed approach verifies the performances of reverberation suppression and achieves high resolution of target detection.

Cosmic muon flux measurement and tunnel overburden structure imaging

We present a cosmic ray muon tomographic experiment for measuring the muon flux and imaging the tunnel overburden structures in Changshu, China. The device used in this study is a tracking detector based on the plastic scintillator with SiPM technology, which can be conveniently operated in field works. The compact system with sensitive area of $6400 cm^2$ can measure the angular distribution of cosmic muons. It's able to image the overburden density length from the surface of overburden to the detector along the muon tracks. The open sky muon flux measurement outside the tunnel has a good agreement with the modified Gassier Formula model. The distributions of muon flux at three positions inside the tunnel are very similar to that of open sky. Assuming the average density of overburden compact sandstone is $2.65 g/cm^3$, the overburden thickness can be obtained from the density length derived from the difference of muon flux inside and outside the tunnel. Moreover, for known penetrated lengths (i.e., topography of overburden), the density anomalies of the overburden can also been obtained. This study suggests a potential application for imaging and detecting subsurface structures in civil engineering, tunnels or caverns with the cosmic ray muon telescope.

Constraining Einstein's Equivalence Principle With Multi-Wavelength Observations of Polarized Blazars

In this paper, we present a novel method to test the Einstein's Equivalence Principle (EEP) using (simultaneous) multi-wavelength radio observations of polarized blazars. We analyze simultaneous multi-wavelength polarization observations of 3C 279 at 22, 43, and 86 GHz obtained by two antennas of the Korean VLBI Network. We obtained 15 groups of polarization data, and applied the Metropolis-Hastings Markov Chain (MHMC) to simulate the parameters when considering the EEP effect and the simplest form of Faraday rotation (single external Faraday screen). The final results show the constraint of the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameter $γ$ discrepancy as $Δγ_{p} = (1.91\pm0.34)\times10^{-20}$. However, the single external Faraday screen is an oversimplification for blazars because there are numerous observations show complex Faraday rotation behavior for blazars due to internal/external Faraday dispersion, beam depolarization, etc. The value $Δγ_{p}$ results of this paper can only be considered as upper limits. Only if all other effects are revealed and considered, should the result be taken as a direct measurement of the violation of the EEP.

DeepFPC: Deep Unfolding of a Fixed-Point Continuation Algorithm for Sparse Signal Recovery from Quantized Measurements

We present DeepFPC, a novel deep neural network designed by unfolding the iterations of the fixed-point continuation algorithm with one-sided l1-norm (FPC-l1), which has been proposed for solving the 1-bit compressed sensing problem. The network architecture resembles that of deep residual learning and incorporates prior knowledge about the signal structure (i.e., sparsity), thereby offering interpretability by design. Once DeepFPC is properly trained, a sparse signal can be recovered fast and accurately from quantized measurements. The proposed model is evaluated in the task of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation and is shown to outperform state-of-the-art algorithms, namely, the iterative FPC-l1 algorithm and the 1-bit MUSIC method.

G4.8+6.2, a possible kilonova remnant?

Kilonova explosions typically release $\sim 10^{50-51}$ erg in kinetic energy, which is sufficient to constitute a kilonova remnant (KNR); however, it has not yet been confirmed. In this work, we investigate the probable association between G4.8+6.2 and the guest star of AD 1163, which is recorded by the Korea ancient astronomers. Although the evidence available is insufficient to draw a definite conclusion, it is at least theoretically self-consistent that the guest star of AD 1163 was a historical kilonova associated with G4.8+6.2, considering the possible short visible timescale of AD 1163, the relatively high Galactic latitude of G4.8+6.2, and that G4.8+6.2 is spatially coincident with the guest star of AD 1163. Further observation of G4.8+6.2 is needed to test our hypothesis. If our interpretation is correct, our results indicate that young KNRs should have a large diameter and low surface brightness, unlike other young supernova remnants.

Possible correlations between gamma-ray burst and its host galaxy offset

We collected the information of 304 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from the literature, and analyzed the correlations among the host galaxy offsets (the distance from the site of the GRB to the center of its host galaxy), $T_{\rm 90,i}$ (the duration $T_{\rm 90}$ in rest-frame), $T_{\rm R45,i}$ (the duration $T_{\rm R45}$ in rest-frame), $E_{\rm γ,iso}$ (the isotropic equivalent energy), $L_{\rm γ,iso}$ ($=E_{\rm γ,iso}/T_{\rm 90,i}$, the isotropic equivalent luminosity) and $L_{\rm pk}$ (peak luminosity). We found that $ T_{\rm 90,i}$, $ T_{\rm R45,i}$, $ E_{\rm γ,iso}$, $L_{\rm pk}$ have negative correlation with $ {\rm offset}$, which is consistent with origin of short GRBs (SGRBs) and long GRBs (LGRBs). On separate analysis, we found similar results for $\log E_{\rm γ,iso}$ - $\log {\rm (offset)}$ and $\log L_{\rm pk}$ - $\log {\rm (offset)}$ relations in case of SGRBs only, while no obvious relation for LGRBs. There is no correlations between offset and $L_{\rm γ,iso}$. We also put the special GRB 170817A {and GRB 060218A} on the plots. {The two GRBs both have low luminosity and small offset.} In the $ \log ({\rm offset})- \log T_{\rm 90,i}$ plot, we found GRB 170817A locates in between the two regions of SGRBs and LGRBs and it is the outlier in the $ {\rm offset}-E_{\rm γ, iso}$, $ {\rm offset}-L_{\rm γ, iso}$ and $ {\rm offset}-L_{\rm pk}$ plots. Together with GRB 060218A being an outlier in all plots, it indicates the speciality of GRBs 170817A and 060218A, and might imply more subgroups of the GRB samples.

A comprehensive statistical study on gamma-ray bursts

In order to obtain an overview of the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), we need a full sample. In this paper, we collected 6289 GRBs (from GRB 910421 to GRB 160509A) from the literature, including prompt emission, afterglow and host galaxy properties. We hope to use this large sample to reveal the intrinsic properties of GRB. We have listed all the data in machine readable tables, including the properties of the GRBs, correlation coefficients and linear regression results of two arbitrary parameters, and linear regression results of any three parameters. These machine readable tables could be used as a data reservoir for further studies on the classifications or correlations. One may find some intrinsic properties from these statistical results. With this comprehensive table, it is possible to find relations between different parameters, and to classify the GRBs into different kinds of sub-groups. With the completion, it may reveal the nature of GRBs and may be used as tools like pseudo-redshift indicators, standard candles, etc. All the machine readable data and statistical results are available on the website of the journal.

One-Bit MUSIC

In this letter, we consider the problem of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation with one-bit quantized array measurements. With analysis, it is shown that, under mild conditions the one-bit covariance matrix can be approximated by the sum of a scaled unquantized covariance matrix and a scaled identity matrix. Although the scaling parameters unknown because of the extreme quantization, they do not affect the subspace-based DOA estimators. Specifically, the signal and noise subspaces can be straightforwardly determined through the eigendecomposition of the one-bit covariance matrix, without pre-processing such as unquantized covariance matrix reconstruction. With so-obtained subspaces, the most classical multiple signal classification (MUSIC) technique can be applied to determine the signal DOAs. The resulting method is thus termed as one-bit MUSIC. Thanks to the simplicity of this method, it can be very easily implemented in practical applications, whereas the DOA estimation performance is comparable to the case with unquantized covariance matrix reconstruction, as demonstrated by various simulations.

A Fast Method for Array Response Adjustment with Phase-Only Constraint

In this paper, we propose a fast method for array response adjustment with phase-only constraint. This method can precisely and rapidly adjust the array response of a given point by only varying the entry phases of a pre-assigned weight vector. We show that phase-only array response adjustment can be formulated as a polygon construction problem, which can be solved by edge rotation in complex plain. Unlike the existing approaches, the proposed algorithm provides an analytical solution and guarantees a precise phase-only adjustment without pattern distortion. Moreover, the proposed method is suitable for an arbitrarily given weight vector and has a low computational complexity. Representative examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
