Scalable hierarchical parallel algorithm for the solution of super large-scale sparse linear equations

The parallel linear equations solver capable of effectively using 1000+ processors becomes the bottleneck of large-scale implicit engineering simulations. In this paper, we present a new hierarchical parallel master-slave-structural iterative algorithm for the solution of super large-scale sparse linear equations in distributed memory computer cluster. Through alternatively performing global equilibrium computation and local relaxation, our proposed algorithm will reach the specific accuracy requirement in a few of iterative steps. Moreover, each set/slave-processor majorly communicate with its nearest neighbors, and the transferring data between sets/slave-processors and master is always far below the set-neighbor communication. The corresponding algorithm for implicit finite element analysis has been implemented based on MPI library, and a super large 2-dimension square system of triangle-lattice truss structure under random static loads is simulated with over one billion degrees of freedom and up to 2001 processors on "Exploration 100" cluster in Tsinghua University. The numerical experiments demonstrate that this algorithm has excellent parallel efficiency and high scalability, and it may have broad application in other implicit simulations.

Waves and instability in a one-dimensional microfluidic array

Motion in a one-dimensional (1D) microfluidic array is simulated. Water droplets, dragged by flowing oil, are arranged in a single row, and due to their hydrodynamic interactions spacing between these droplets oscillates with a wave-like motion that is longitudinal or transverse. The simulation yields wave spectra that agree well with experiment. The wave-like motion has an instability which is confirmed to arise from nonlinearities in the interaction potential. The instability's growth is spatially localized. By selecting an appropriate correlation function, the interaction between the longitudinal and transverse waves is described.

Frequency-dependent shear viscosity of a liquid 2D dusty plasma

The viscoelasticity of a two-dimensional liquid strongly-coupled dusty plasma is studied experimentally, without macroscopic shear. Positions and velocities of the dust particles, measured by video microscopy, are used as the inputs to the generalized Green-Kubo relation to obtain the complex viscosity $η(ω)$. The real part of $η(ω)$ (which corresponds to dissipation) diminishes gradually with frequency, while the imaginary part (which corresponds to elasticity) is peaked at a frequency below the 2D dusty plasma frequency. The viscoelastic approximation is found to accurately describe the 2D experimental results for $η(ω)$, yielding the Maxwell relaxation time $τ_M = 0.10 s$. Results for $η(ω)$ are compared to 2D molecular dynamics Yukawa simulations and to a previous experiment that was performed using an oscillating macroscopic shear.

Many-to-many disjoint paths in hypercubes with faulty vertices

This paper considers the problem of many-to-many disjoint paths in the hypercube $Q_n$ with $f$ faulty vertices and obtains the following result. For any integer $k$ with $1\leq k\leq n-2$, any two sets $S$ and $T$ of $k$ fault-free vertices in different parts of $Q_n\ (n\geq 3)$, if $f\leq 2n-2k-3$ and each fault-free vertex has at least two fault-free neighbors, then there exist $k$ fully disjoint fault-free paths linking $S$ and $T$ which contain at least $2^n-2f$ vertices. This result improves some known results in a sense.

Local Unitary Classification of Arbitrary Dimensional Multipartite Pure States

We propose a practical entanglement classification scheme for general multipartite pure states in arbitrary dimensions under local unitary equivalence by exploiting the high order singular value decomposition technique and local symmetries of the states. By virtue of this scheme, the method of determining the local unitary equivalence of $n$-qubit states proposed by Kraus is extended to the case for arbitrary dimensional multipartite states.

Flexible quantum private queries based on quantum key distribution

We present a flexible quantum-key-distribution-based protocol for quantum private queries. Similar to M. Jakobi et al's protocol [Phys. Rev. A 83, 022301 (2011)], it is loss tolerant, practical and robust against quantum memory attack. Furthermore, our protocol is more flexible and controllable. We show that, by adjusting the value of $θ$, the average number of the key bits Alice obtains can be located on any fixed value the users wanted for any database size. And the parameter $k$ is generally smaller (even $k=1$ can be achieved) when $θ<π/4$, which implies lower complexity of both quantum and classical communications. Furthermore, the users can choose a smaller $θ$ to get better database security, or a larger $θ$ to obtain a lower probability with which Bob can correctly guess the address of Alice's query.

Green-Kubo relation for viscosity tested using experimental data for a 2D dusty plasma

The theoretical Green-Kubo relation for viscosity is tested using experimentally obtained data. In a dusty plasma experiment, micron-size dust particles are introduced into a partially-ionized argon plasma, where they become negatively charged. They are electrically levitated to form a single-layer Wigner crystal, which is subsequently melted using laser heating. In the liquid phase, these dust particles experience interparticle electric repulsion, laser heating, and friction from the ambient neutral argon gas, and they can be considered to be in a nonequilibrium steady state. Direct measurements of the positions and velocities of individual dust particles are then used to obtain a time series for an off-diagonal element of the stress tensor and its time autocorrelation function. This calculation also requires the interparticle potential, which was not measured experimentally, but was obtained using a Debye-Hückel-type model with experimentally determined parameters. Integrating the autocorrelation function over time yields the viscosity for shearing motion amongst dust particles. The viscosity so obtained is found to agree with results from a previous experiment using a hydrodynamical Navier-Stokes equation. This comparison serves as a test of the Green-Kubo relation for viscosity. Our result is also compared to the predictions of several simulations.

The Klein-Gordon equation in Machian model

The non-local Machian model is regarded as an alternative theory of gravitation which states that all particles in the Universe as a 'gravitationally entangled' statistical ensemble. It is shown that the Klein-Gordon equation can be derived within this Machian model of the universe. The crucial point of the derivation is the activity of the Machian energy background field which causing a fluctuation about the average momentum of a particle, the non-locality problem in quantum theory is addressed in this framework.

Thermodynamical properties of interacting holographic dark energy model with apparent horizon

We have investigated the thermodynamical properties of the universe with dark energy. It is demonstrated that in a universe with spacial curvature the natural choice for IR cutoff could be the apparent horizon radius. We shown that any interaction of pressureless dark matter with holographic dark energy, whose infrared cutoff is set by the apparent horizon radius, implying a constant effective equation of state of dark component in a universe. In addition we found that for the static observer in space, the comoving distance has a faster expansion than the apparent horizon radius with any spatial curvature. We also verify that in some conditions the modified first law of thermodynamics could return to the classic form at apparent horizon for a universe filled with dark energy and dark matter. Besides, the generalized second law of thermodynamics is discussed in a region enclosed by the apparent horizon.

Accurate particle position measurement from images

The moment method is an image analysis technique for sub-pixel estimation of particle positions. The total error in the calculated particle position includes effects of pixel locking and random noise in each pixel. Pixel locking, also known as peak locking, is an artifact where calculated particle positions are concentrated at certain locations relative to pixel edges. We report simulations to gain an understanding of the sources of error and their dependence on parameters the experimenter can control. We suggest an algorithm, and we find optimal parameters an experimenter can use to minimize total error and pixel locking. Simulating a dusty plasma experiment, we find that a sub-pixel accuracy of 0.017 pixel or better can be attained. These results are also useful for improving particle position measurement and particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) using video microscopy, in fields including colloids, biology, and fluid mechanics.

Rapid heating and cooling in two-dimensional Yukawa systems

Simulations are reported to investigate solid superheating and liquid supercooling of two-dimensional (2D) systems with a Yukawa interparticle potential. Motivated by experiments where a dusty plasma is heated and then cooled suddenly, we track particle motion using a simulation with Langevin dynamics. Hysteresis is observed when the temperature is varied rapidly in a heating and cooling cycle. As in the experiment, transient solid superheating, but not liquid supercooling, is observed. Solid superheating, which is characterized by solid structure above the melting point, is found to be promoted by a higher rate of temperature increase.

Identifying anomalous diffusion and melting in dusty plasmas

Anomalous diffusion in liquids and the solid-liquid phase transition (melting) are studied in two-dimensional Yukawa systems. The self-intermediate scattering function (self-ISF), calculated from simulation data, exhibits a temporal decay, or relaxation, with a characteristic relaxation time. This decay is found to be useful for distinguishing normal and anomalous diffusion in a liquid, and for identifying the solid-liquid phase transition. For liquids, a scaling of the relaxation time with length scale is found. For the solid-liquid phase transition, the shape of the self-ISF curve is found to be a sensitive indicator of phase. Friction has a significant effect on the timing of relaxation, but not the melting point.

Viscosity calculated in simulations of strongly-coupled dusty plasmas with gas friction

A two-dimensional strongly-coupled dusty plasma is modeled using Langevin and frictionless molecular dynamical simulations. The static viscosity $η$ and the wave-number-dependent viscosity $η(k)$ are calculated from the microscopic shear in the random motion of particles. A recently developed method of calculating the wave-number-dependent viscosity $η(k)$ is validated by comparing the results of $η(k)$ from the two simulations. It is also verified that the Green-Kubo relation can still yield an accurate measure of the static viscosity $η$ in the presence of a modest level of friction as in dusty plasma experiments.

Errors in particle tracking velocimetry with high-speed cameras

Velocity errors in particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) are studied. When using high-speed video cameras, the velocity error may increase at a high camera frame rate. This increase in velocity error is due to particle-position uncertainty, which is one of two sources of velocity errors studied here. The other source of error is particle acceleration, which has the opposite trend of diminishing at higher frame rates. Both kinds of errors can propagate into quantities calculated from velocity, such as the kinetic temperature of particles or correlation functions. As demonstrated in a dusty plasma experiment, the kinetic temperature of particles has no unique value when measured using PTV, but depends on the sampling time interval or frame rate. It is also shown that an artifact appears in an autocorrelation function computed from particle positions and velocities, and it becomes more severe when a small sampling-time interval is used. Schemes to reduce these errors are demonstrated.

The Friedmann equation in modified entropy-area relation from entropy force

According to the formal holographic principle, a modification to the assumption of holographic principle in Verlinder's investigation of entropy force is obtained. A more precise relation between entropy and area in the holographic system is proposed. With the entropy corrections to the area-relation, we derivate Newton's laws and Einstein equation with a static spherically symmetric holographic screen. Furthermore we derived the correction terms to the modified Friedmann equation of the FRW universe starting from the holographic principle and the Debye model.

Observational Constraints on Phantom Crossing DGP Gravity

We study the observational constraints on the Phantom Crossing DGP model. We demonstrate that the crossing of the phantom divide does not occur within the framework of the original Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) model or the DGP model developed by Dvali and Turner. By extending their model in the framework of an extra dimension scenario, we study a model that realizes crossing of the phantom divide. We investigate the cosmological constraints obtained from the recent observational data of Type Ia Supernovae, Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies, and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations. The best fit values of the parameters with 1$σ$ (68%) errors for the Phantom Crossing DGP model are $Ω_{m,0}=0.27^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$, $β=0.54^{+0.24}_{-0.30}$. We find that the Phantom Crossing DGP model is more compatible with the observations than the original DGP model or the DGP model developed by Dvali and Turner. Our model can realize late-time acceleration of the universe, similar to that of $Λ$CDM model, without dark energy due to the effect of DGP gravity. In our model, crossing of the phantom divide occurs at a redshift of $z \sim 0.2$.

Optimizing Information Credibility in Social Swarming Applications

With the advent of smartphone technology, it has become possible to conceive of entirely new classes of applications. Social swarming, in which users armed with smartphones are directed by a central director to report on events in the physical world, has several real-world applications: search and rescue, coordinated fire-fighting, and the DARPA balloon hunt challenge. In this paper, we focus on the following problem: how does the director optimize the selection of reporters to deliver credible corroborating information about an event. We first propose a model, based on common intuitions of believability, about the credibility of information. We then cast the problem posed above as a discrete optimization problem, and introduce optimal centralized solutions and an approximate solution amenable to decentralized implementation whose performance is about 20% off on average from the optimal (on real-world datasets derived from Google News) while being 3 orders of magnitude more computationally efficient. More interesting, a time-averaged version of the problem is amenable to a novel stochastic utility optimization formulation, and can be solved optimally, while in some cases yielding decentralized solutions. To our knowledge, we are the first to propose and explore the problem of extracting credible information from a network of smartphones.

The modified wave function of test particle approaching holographic screen from entropy force

In this note we generalize entropy based on the quantum mechanical probability density distribution. Motivated by J. Munkhammar and the uncertainty of entropy we modified the origin wave function of the test particle. The corrected one acting on the quantum particle is subject to the uncertainty principle. Considering the uncertain relation, the corrected probability of the particle for measurement on holographic screen has been proposed. We also derivate the speed of information transfer described by wave function. Our quantum approach to entropy stress the information in a physical system is directly associated with its quantum mechanical entropy defined by the equality of the partition function.
