Partially Connected Automated Vehicle Cooperative Control Strategy with a Deep Reinforcement Learning Approach

This paper proposes a cooperative strategy of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) longitudinal control for partially connected and automated traffic environment based on deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm, which enhances the string stability of mixed traffic, car following efficiency, and energy efficiency. Since the sequences of mixed traffic are combinatory, to reduce the training dimension and alleviate communication burdens, we decomposed mixed traffic into multiple subsystems where each subsystem is comprised of human-driven vehicles (HDV) followed by cooperative CAVs. Based on that, a cooperative CAV control strategy is developed based on a deep reinforcement learning algorithm, enabling CAVs to learn the leading HDV's characteristics and make longitudinal control decisions cooperatively to improve the performance of each subsystem locally and consequently enhance performance for the whole mixed traffic flow. For training, a distributed proximal policy optimization is applied to ensure the training convergence of the proposed DRL. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, simulated experiments are conducted, which shows the performance of our proposed model has a great generalization capability of dampening oscillations, fulfilling the car following and energy-saving tasks efficiently under different penetration rates and various leading HDVs behaviors. ES-CTC: A Deep Neuroevolution Model for Cooperative Intelligent Freeway Traffic Control

Cooperative intelligent freeway traffic control is an important application in intelligent transportation systems, which is expected to improve the mobility of freeway networks. In this paper, we propose a deep neuroevolution model, called ES-CTC, to achieve a cooperative control scheme of ramp metering, differential variable speed limits and lane change control agents for improving freeway traffic. In this model, the graph convolutional networks are used to learn more meaningful spatial pattern from traffic sensors, a knowledge sharing layer is designed for communication between different agents. The proposed neural networks structure allows different agents share knowledge with each other and execute action asynchronously. In order to address the delayed reward and action asynchronism issues, the evolutionary strategy is utilized to train the agents under stochastic traffic demands. The experimental results on a simulated freeway section indicate that ES-CTC is a viable approach and outperforms several existing methods

Differential Variable Speed Limits Control for Freeway Recurrent Bottlenecks via Deep Reinforcement learning

Variable speed limits (VSL) control is a flexible way to improve traffic condition, increase safety and reduce emission. There is an emerging trend of using reinforcement learning technique for VSL control and recent studies have shown promising results. Currently, deep learning is enabling reinforcement learning to develope autonomous control agents for problems that were previously intractable. In this paper, we propose a more effective deep reinforcement learning (DRL) model for differential variable speed limits (DVSL) control, in which the dynamic and different speed limits among lanes can be imposed. The proposed DRL models use a novel actor-critic architecture which can learn a large number of discrete speed limits in a continues action space. Different reward signals, e.g. total travel time, bottleneck speed, emergency braking, and vehicular emission are used to train the DVSL controller, and comparison between these reward signals are conducted. We test proposed DRL baased DVSL controllers on a simulated freeway recurrent bottleneck. Results show that the efficiency, safety and emissions can be improved by the proposed method. We also show some interesting findings through the visulization of the control policies generated from DRL models.

Feature Selection with Redundancy-complementariness Dispersion

Feature selection has attracted significant attention in data mining and machine learning in the past decades. Many existing feature selection methods eliminate redundancy by measuring pairwise inter-correlation of features, whereas the complementariness of features and higher inter-correlation among more than two features are ignored. In this study, a modification item concerning the complementariness of features is introduced in the evaluation criterion of features. Additionally, in order to identify the interference effect of already-selected False Positives (FPs), the redundancy-complementariness dispersion is also taken into account to adjust the measurement of pairwise inter-correlation of features. To illustrate the effectiveness of proposed method, classification experiments are applied with four frequently used classifiers on ten datasets. Classification results verify the superiority of proposed method compared with five representative feature selection methods.
