Manipulating the magnetic anisotropy of cobalt doped titanium dioxide by carrier accumulation

Based on first-principles calculations, we predict that the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of Co-doped TiO$_2$ sensitively depends on carrier accumulation. This magnetoelectric phenomenon provides a promising route to directly manipulate the magnetization direction of diluted magnetic semiconductor by external electric-fields. We calculate the band structures and reveal the origin of carrier-dependent MAE in k-space. In fact, the carrier accumulation shifts the Fermi energy and regulates the competing contributions to MAE. The first-principles calculations provide a straightforward way to design spintronics materials with electrically controllable spin direction.

Ab initio study of magnetic anisotropy in cobalt doped zinc oxide with electron-filling

Based on first-principles calculation, it has been predicted that the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) in Co-doped ZnO (Co:ZnO) depends on electron-filling. Results show that the charge neutral Co:ZnO presents a "easy plane" magnetic state. While modifying the total number of electrons, the easy axis rotates from in-plane to out-of-plane. The alternation of the MAE is considered to be the change of the ground state of Co ion, resulting from the relocating of electrons on Co d-orbitals with electron-filling.

Ab initio calculation of the local magnetic moment in titanium doped zinc oxide with a corrected-band-gap scheme

The local magnetic moment of Ti:ZnO is calculated from first principles by using the corrected-band-gap scheme (CBGS). The results shows that the system is magnetic with the magnetization of 0.699 $μ_B$ per dopant. The origin of the local magnetic moment is considered to be the impurity band partially occupied by the donor electrons in the conduction band. Further, the impacts of applying Hubbard U to Ti-d orbital on the magnetic moment have been investigated.

Revisiting the quantum Szilard engine with fully quantum considerations

By considering level shifting during the insertion process we revisit the quantum Szilard engine (QSZE) with fully quantum consideration. We derive the general expressions of the heat absorbed from thermal bath and the total work done to the environment by the system in a cycle with two different cyclic strategies. We find that only the quantum information contributes to the absorbed heat, and the classical information acts like a feedback controller and has no direct effect on the absorbed heat. This is the first demonstration of the different effects of quantum information and classical information for extracting heat from the bath in the QSZE. Moreover, when the well width $L\rightarrow \infty $ or the temperature of the bath $T\rightarrow \infty $ the QSZE reduces to the classical Szilard engine (CSZE), and the total work satisfies the relation $W_{\mathtt{tot}}=k_{B}T \mathtt{ln}2$ as obtained by Sang Wook Kim et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 070401 (2011)] for one particle case.

Quantum discord and its asymptotic behaviors in a time-dependent XY spin chain

We study the dynamics and the asymptotic behaviors of quantum discord in a one-dimensional XY model coupled through time-dependent nearest-neighbor interactions and in the presence of a time-dependent magnetic field. We find that the time evolution of the nearest-neighbor quantum discord in this system shows non-ergodic behaviors but is asymptotic to its steady value at the long-time limit. The zero-temperature asymptotic behaviors of quantum discord is only determined by the ratio between the coupling parameter and magnetic field, whereas the finite-temperature asymptotic behaviors determined by both of them. These asymptotic behaviors are sensitive not only to the initial values of the coupling parameter and magnetic field, but also to the final values. It is interesting to note that quantum discords are more robust than entanglement against the effect of temperature. We also find particular parameter regimes, where the nearest-neighbor quantum discord is enhanced significantly.

Efficient Subgraph Matching on Billion Node Graphs

The ability to handle large scale graph data is crucial to an increasing number of applications. Much work has been dedicated to supporting basic graph operations such as subgraph matching, reachability, regular expression matching, etc. In many cases, graph indices are employed to speed up query processing. Typically, most indices require either super-linear indexing time or super-linear indexing space. Unfortunately, for very large graphs, super-linear approaches are almost always infeasible. In this paper, we study the problem of subgraph matching on billion-node graphs. We present a novel algorithm that supports efficient subgraph matching for graphs deployed on a distributed memory store. Instead of relying on super-linear indices, we use efficient graph exploration and massive parallel computing for query processing. Our experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of performing subgraph matching on web-scale graph data.

Fault-Tolerant Exact State Transmission

We show that a category of one-dimensional XY-type models may enable high-fidelity quantum state transmissions, regardless of details of coupling configurations. This observation leads to a fault- tolerant design of a state transmission setup. The setup is fault-tolerant, with specified thresholds, against engineering failures of coupling configurations, fabrication imperfections or defects, and even time-dependent noises. We propose the implementation of the fault-tolerant scheme using hard-core bosons in one-dimensional optical lattices.

Non-perturbative Dynamical Decoupling Control: A Spin Chain Model

This paper considers a spin chain model by numerically solving the exact model to explore the non-perturbative dynamical decoupling regime, where an important issue arises recently (J. Jing, L.-A. Wu, J. Q. You and T. Yu, arXiv:1202.5056.). Our study has revealed a few universal features of non-perturbative dynamical control irrespective of the types of environments and system-environment couplings. We have shown that, for the spin chain model, there is a threshold and a large pulse parameter region where the effective dynamical control can be implemented, in contrast to the perturbative decoupling schemes where the permissible parameters are represented by a point or converge to a very small subset in the large parameter region admitted by our non-perturbative approach. An important implication of the non-perturbative approach is its flexibility in implementing the dynamical control scheme in a experimental setup. Our findings have exhibited several interesting features of the non-perturbative regimes such as the chain-size independence, pulse strength upper-bound, noncontinuous valid parameter regions, etc. Furthermore, we find that our non-perturbative scheme is robust against randomness in model fabrication and time-dependent random noise.

General Quantum State Swap: an XY model analysis

We consider an exact state swap, defined as the swap between two quantum states |A> and |B> in the Hilbert space of a quantum system. We show that, given an arbitrary Hamiltonian dynamics, there is a straightforward approach to calculating the probability of the occurrence of an exact state swap, by employing an exchange operator P_{AB}. For a given dynamics, the feasibilities of proposed quantum setups, such as quantum state amplifications and transfers can be evaluated. These setups are only distinguished by different forms of P_{AB}, which easily lead to innovative designs of quantum setups or devices. We illustrate the method with the isotropic XY model, whose unnoticed features are revealed.

Protecting entangled states of two ions by engineering reservoir

We present a proposal for realizing local decoherence-free evolution of given entangled states of two two-level (TL) ions. For two TL ions coupled to a single heavily damped cavity, we can use engineering reservoir scheme to obtain a decoherence-free subspace which can be nonadiabatically controlled by the system and reservoir parameters. Then the local decoherence-free evolution of the entangled states are achieved. And we also discuss the relation between the geometric phases and the entanglement of the two ions under the nonadiabatic coherent evolution.

Duplex quantum communication through a spin chain

Data multiplexing within a quantum computer can allow for the simultaneous transfer of multiple streams of information over a shared medium thereby minimizing the number of channels needed for requisite data transmission. Here, we investigate a two-way quantum communication protocol using a spin chain placed in an external magnetic field. In our scheme, Alice and Bob each play the role of a sender and a receiver as two states cos(θ1/2)|0> + sin(θ1/2)exp(iϕ1)|1>, cos(θ2/2)|0> + sin(θ2/2)exp(iϕ2)|1> are transferred through one channel simultaneously. We find that the transmission fidelity at each end of a spin chain can usually be enhanced by the presence of a second party. This is an important result for establishing the viability of duplex quantum communication through spin chain networks.

An effective method of calculating the non-Markovianity $\mathcal{N}$ for single channel open systems

We propose an effective method which can simplify the optimization of the increase of the trace distance over all pairs of initial states in calculating the non-Markovianity $\mathcal{N}$ for single channel open systems. For the amplitude damping channel, we can unify the results of Breuer $et$ $al$. [Phys. Rev. Lett. \bf 103\rm, 210401 (2009)] in the large-detuning case and the results of Xu $et$ $al$. [Phys. Rev. A \bf 81\rm, 044105 (2010)] in the resonant case; furthermore, for the general off-resonant cases we can obtain a very tight lower bound of $\mathcal{N}$. As another application of our method, we also discuss $\mathcal{N}$ for the non-Markovian depolarizing channel.

The decoherence dynamics of the multipartite entanglement in non-Markovian environment

We consider four two-level atoms interacting with independent non-Markovian reservoirs with detuning. We mainly investigate the effects of the detuning and the length of the reservoir correlation time on the decoherence dynamics of the multipartite entanglement. We find that the time evolution of the entanglement of atomic and reservoir subsystems is determined by a parameter, which is a function of the detuning and the reservoir correlation time. We also find that the decay and revival of the entanglement of the atomic and reservoir subsystems are closely related to the sign of the decay rate. We also show that the cluster state is the most robust to decoherence comparing with Dicke, GHZ, and W states for this decoherence channel

Entanglement evolution of two qubits under noisy environments

The entanglement evolution of two qubits under local, single- and two- sided noisy channels is investigated. It is found that for all pure initial states, the entanglement under a one-sided noisy channel is completely determined by the maximal trace distance which is the main element to construct the measure of non-Markovianity. For the two-sided noisy channel case, when the qubits are initially prepared in a general class of states, no matter pure or mixed, the entanglement can be expressed as the products of initial entanglement and the channels' action on the maximally entangled state.

Quantum and classical correlations in the one-dimensional XY model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We study the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction on pairwise quantum discord, entanglement, and classical correlation in the anisotropic XY spin-half chain. Analytical expressions for both quantum and classical correlations are obtained from the spin-spin correlation functions. We show that these pairwise quantities exhibit various behaviors in relation to the relative strengths of the DM interaction, the anisotropy and the magnetic intensity. We observe non-analyticities of the derivatives of both quantum and classical correlations with respect to the magnetic intensity at the critical point, with consideration of the DM interaction.

Perfect Function Transfer in two- and three- dimensions without initialization

We find analytic models that can perfectly transfer, without state initializati$ or remote collaboration, arbitrary functions in two- and three-dimensional interacting bosonic and fermionic networks. We elaborate on a possible implementation of state transfer through bosonic or fermionic atoms trapped in optical lattices. A significant finding is that the state of a spin qubit can be perfectly transferred through a fermionic system. Families of Hamiltonians, both linear and nonlinear, are described which are related to the linear Boson model and that enable the perfect transfer of arbitrary functions. This includes entangled states such as decoherence-free subsystems enabling noise protection of the transferred state.

Robust and Reliable Transfer of a Quantum State Through a Spin Chain

We present several protocols for reliable quantum state transfer through a spin chain. We use a simple two-spin encoding to achieve a remarkably high fidelity transfer for an arbitrary quantum state. The fidelity of the transfer also decreases very slowly with increasing chain length. We find that we can also increase the reliability by taking advantage of a local memory and/or confirm transfer using a second spin-chain.

Study of 3he(e,e') Longitudinal Response Functions with the Integral-Transform Method

The method of integral transforms is first applied for studying the $^3$He longitudinal response functions. The transforms are calculated from localized bound-state-type solutions to an inhomogenous Schrödinger-type three-body equation. Several versions of local $s$-wave spin-dependent potentials supplemented with a singlet $p$-wave potential and with the proton-proton Coulomb interaction are used as a two-nucleon input. The conventional charge density operator is utilized. The three-body equations are solved with a high acuracy. It is found that the contribution of the $T=3/2$ final states to the problem is suppressed and it amounts about 15\%. This might be ascribed to symmetry requirements. The contributions of the $p$-wave $NN$ interaction and of the Coulomb interaction are found to amount several per cent. Uncertainty due to different choices of $s$-wave $NN$ forces is of a similar magnitude provided that the low-energy $NN$ data are properly described. The results are compared with the integral transforms of the experimental response functions. For $q=300$ MeV/c experimental and theoretical results coincide within their uncertainties. For $q=500$ MeV/c a noticeable difference is detected.
