Deep Partial Multiplex Network Embedding

Network embedding is an effective technique to learn the low-dimensional representations of nodes in networks. Real-world networks are usually with multiplex or having multi-view representations from different relations. Recently, there has been increasing interest in network embedding on multiplex data. However, most existing multiplex approaches assume that the data is complete in all views. But in real applications, it is often the case that each view suffers from the missing of some data and therefore results in partial multiplex data. In this paper, we present a novel Deep Partial Multiplex Network Embedding approach to deal with incomplete data. In particular, the network embeddings are learned by simultaneously minimizing the deep reconstruction loss with the autoencoder neural network, enforcing the data consistency across views via common latent subspace learning, and preserving the data topological structure within the same network through graph Laplacian. We further prove the orthogonal invariant property of the learned embeddings and connect our approach with the binary embedding techniques. Experiments on four multiplex benchmarks demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed approach over several state-of-the-art methods on node classification, link prediction and clustering tasks.

Pressure-induced dimerization and collapse of antiferromagnetism in the Kitaev material $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We present magnetization measurements carried out on polycrystalline and single-crystalline samples of $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under hydrostatic pressures up to 2 GPa and establish the temperature-pressure phase diagram of this material. The Néel temperature ($T_{\rm{N}}$) of $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is slightly enhanced upon compression with $dT_{\rm{N}}/dp$ = 1.5 K/GPa. Above 1.2 GPa, $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ undergoes a first-order phase transition toward a nonmagnetic dimerized phase, with no traces of the magnetic phase observed above 1.8 GPa at low temperatures. The critical pressure of the structural dimerization is strongly temperature-dependent. This temperature dependence is well reproduced on the ab initio level by taking into account lower phonon entropy in the nonmagnetic phase. We further show that the initial increase in $T_{\rm{N}}$ of the magnetic phase is due to a weakening of the Kitaev interaction $K$ along with the enhancement of the Heisenberg term $J$ and off-diagonal anisotropy $Γ$. Our study reveals a common thread in the interplay of magnetism and dimerization in pressured Kitaev materials.

Interplay of magnetism and dimerization in pressurized Kitaev material $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We present magnetization measurements on polycrystalline $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under hydrostatic pressures up to 3~GPa and construct the temperature-pressure phase diagram of this material. Our data confirm that magnetic order breaks down in a first-order phase transition at $p_{\rm{c}}$ $\approx$ 1.4~GPa and additionally reveal a step-like feature -- magnetic signature of structural dimerization -- that appears at $p_{\rm{c}}$ and shifts to higher temperatures upon further compression. Following the structural study by L. S. I. Veiga et al. [Phys. Rev. B 100, 064104 (2019)], we suggest that a partially dimerized phase with a mixture of magnetic and non-magnetic Ir$^{4+}$ sites develops above $p_{\rm{c}}$. This phase is thermodynamically stable between 1.7 and 2.7~GPa according to our ab initio calculations. It confines the magnetic Ir$^{4+}$ sites to weakly coupled tetramers with a singlet ground state and no long-range magnetic order. Our results rule out the formation of a pressure-induced spin-liquid phase in $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ and reveal peculiarities of the magnetism collapse transition in a Kitaev material. We also show that a compressive strain imposed by the pressure treatment of $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ enhances signatures of the 100~K magnetic anomaly at ambient pressure.

Silicon Nitride External Cavity Laser with Alignment Tolerant Multi-Mode RSOA-to-PIC Interface

We demonstrate an external cavity laser formed by combining a silicon nitride photonic integrated circuit with a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier. The laser uses an alignment tolerant edge coupler formed by a multi-mode waveguide splitter right at the edge of the silicon nitride chip that relaxes the required alignment to the III-V gain chip and equally splits the power among its two output waveguides. Both the ground and first order mode are excited in the coupler and reach the quadrature condition at the waveguide junction, ensuring equal power to be coupled to both. Two high-quality-factor ring resonators arranged in Vernier configuration close a Sagnac loop between the two waveguides. In addition to wideband frequency tuning, they result in a longer effective cavity length. The alignment tolerant coupler increases the alignment tolerance in the two directions parallel to the chip surface by a factor 3 relative to conventional edge couplers, making it ideal for gain chip integration via pick-and-place technology. Lasing is maintained in a misalignment range of $\pm$6 $μ$m in the direction along the edge of the chip. A Lorentzian laser linewidth of 42 kHz is achieved.

Anisotropic c-f hybridization in the ferromagnetic quantum critical metal CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$

Heavy fermion compounds exhibiting a ferromagnetic quantum critical point have attracted considerable interest. Common to two known cases, i.e., CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ and YbNi$_4$P$_2$, is that the 4f moments reside along chains with a large inter-chain distance, exhibiting strong magnetic anisotropy that was proposed to be vital for the ferromagnetic quantum criticality. Here we report an angle-resolved photoemission study on CeRh6Ge4, where we observe sharp momentum-dependent 4f bands and clear bending of the conduction bands near the Fermi level, indicating considerable hybridization between conduction and 4f electrons. The extracted hybridization strength is anisotropic in momentum space and is obviously stronger along the Ce chain direction. The hybridized 4f bands persist up to high temperatures, and the evolution of their intensity shows clear band dependence. Our results provide spectroscopic evidence for anisotropic hybridization between conduction and 4f electrons in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$, which could be important for understanding the electronic origin of the ferromagnetic quantum criticality.

Localized 4f-electrons in the quantum critical heavy fermion ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$

Ferromagnetic quantum critical points were predicted to be prohibited in clean itinerant ferromagnetic systems, yet such a phenomenon was recently revealed in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$, where the Curie temperature can be continuously suppressed to zero under a moderate hydrostatic pressure. Here we report the observation of quantum oscillations in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ from measurements using the cantilever and tunnel-diode oscillator methods in fields up to 45 T, clearly demonstrating that the ferromagnetic quantum criticality occurs in a clean system. In order to map the Fermi surface of CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$, we performed angle-dependent measurements of quantum oscillations at ambient pressure, and compared the results to density functional theory calculations. The results are consistent with the Ce 4f electrons remaining localized, and not contributing to the Fermi surface, suggesting that localized ferromagnetism is a key factor for the occurrence of a ferromagnetic quantum critical point in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$.

Strange metal behavior in a pure ferromagnetic Kondo lattice

The strange metal phases found to develop in a wide range of materials near a quantum critical point (QCP), have posed a long-standing mystery. The frequent association of strange metals with unconventional superconductivity and antiferromagnetic QCPs has led to a belief that they are highly entangled quantum states. Ferromagnets, by contrast are regarded as an unlikely setting for strange metals, for they are weakly entangled and their QCPs are often interrupted by competing phases or first order phase transitions. Here, we provide compelling evidence that the stoichiometric heavy fermion ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$ becomes a strange metal at a pressure-induced QCP: specific heat and resistivity measurements demonstrate that the FM transition is continuously suppressed to zero temperature revealing a strange metal phase. We argue that strong magnetic anisotropy plays a key role in this process, injecting entanglement, in the form of triplet resonating valence bonds (tRVBs) into the ordered ferromagnet. We show that the singular transformation from tRVBs into Kondo singlets that occurs at the QCP causes a jump in the Fermi surface volume: a key driver of strange metallic behavior. Our results open up a new direction for research into FM quantum criticality, while also establishing an important new setting for the strange metal problem. Most importantly, strange metallic behavior at a FM quantum critical point suggests that it is quantum entanglement rather than the destruction of antiferromagnetism that is the common driver of the many varied examples of strange metallic behavior.

DART: Domain-Adversarial Residual-Transfer Networks for Unsupervised Cross-Domain Image Classification

The accuracy of deep learning (e.g., convolutional neural networks) for an image classification task critically relies on the amount of labeled training data. Aiming to solve an image classification task on a new domain that lacks labeled data but gains access to cheaply available unlabeled data, unsupervised domain adaptation is a promising technique to boost the performance without incurring extra labeling cost, by assuming images from different domains share some invariant characteristics. In this paper, we propose a new unsupervised domain adaptation method named Domain-Adversarial Residual-Transfer (DART) learning of Deep Neural Networks to tackle cross-domain image classification tasks. In contrast to the existing unsupervised domain adaption approaches, the proposed DART not only learns domain-invariant features via adversarial training, but also achieves robust domain-adaptive classification via a residual-transfer strategy, all in an end-to-end training framework. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method for cross-domain image classification tasks on several well-known benchmark data sets, in which our method clearly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

Collaborative Memory Network for Recommendation Systems

Recommendation systems play a vital role to keep users engaged with personalized content in modern online platforms. Deep learning has revolutionized many research fields and there is a recent surge of interest in applying it to collaborative filtering (CF). However, existing methods compose deep learning architectures with the latent factor model ignoring a major class of CF models, neighborhood or memory-based approaches. We propose Collaborative Memory Networks (CMN), a deep architecture to unify the two classes of CF models capitalizing on the strengths of the global structure of latent factor model and local neighborhood-based structure in a nonlinear fashion. Motivated by the success of Memory Networks, we fuse a memory component and neural attention mechanism as the neighborhood component. The associative addressing scheme with the user and item memories in the memory module encodes complex user-item relations coupled with the neural attention mechanism to learn a user-item specific neighborhood. Finally, the output module jointly exploits the neighborhood with the user and item memories to produce the ranking score. Stacking multiple memory modules together yield deeper architectures capturing increasingly complex user-item relations. Furthermore, we show strong connections between CMN components, memory networks and the three classes of CF models. Comprehensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of CMN on three public datasets outperforming competitive baselines. Qualitative visualization of the attention weights provide insight into the model's recommendation process and suggest the presence of higher order interactions.

Structural and magnetic properties of CeZnAl$_3$ single crystals

We have synthesized single crystals of CeZnAl$_3$, which is a new member of the family of the Ce-based intermetallics Ce$TX_3$ ($T$ = transition metal, $X$= Si, Ge, Al), crystallizing in the non-centrosymmetric tetragonal BaNiSn$_3$-type structure. Magnetization, specific heat and resistivity measurements all show that CeZnAl$_3$ orders magnetically below around 4.4 K. Furthermore, magnetization measurements exhibit a hysteresis loop at low temperatures and fields, indicating the presence of a ferromagnetic component in the magnetic state. This points to a different nature of the magnetism in CeZnAl$_3$ compared to the other isostructural Ce$T$Al$_3$ compounds. Resistivity measurements under pressures up to 1.8 GPa show a moderate suppression of the ordering temperature with pressure, suggesting that measurements to higher pressures are required to look for quantum critical behavior.

Stabilization and frequency control of a DFB laser with a tunable optical reflector integrated in a Silicon Photonics PIC

We investigate the effect of tunable optical feedback on a commercial DFB laser edge coupled to a Silicon Photonics planar integrated circuit in which a tunable reflector has been implemented by means of a ring resonator based add-drop multiplexer. Controlled optical feedback allows for fine-tuning of the laser oscillation frequency. Under certain conditions it also allows suppression of bifurcation modes triggered by reflections occurring elsewhere on the chip. A semi-analytical model describing laser dynamics under combined optical feedback from the input facet of the edge coupler and from the tunable on-chip reflector fits the measurements. Compensation of detrimental effects from reflections induced elsewhere on a transceiver chip may allow moving isolators downstream in future communications systems, facilitating direct hybrid laser integration in Silicon Photonics chips, provided a suitable feedback signal for a control system can be identified. Moreover, the optical frequency tuning at lower feedback levels can be used to form a rapidly tunable optical oscillator as part of an optical phase locked loop, circumventing the problem of the thermal to free carrier effect crossover in the FM response of injection current controlled semiconductor laser diodes.

Silicon Photonics WDM Transceiver with SOA and Semiconductor Mode-Locked Laser

We demonstrate a complete Silicon Photonics WDM link relying on a single section semiconductor mode-locked laser and a single SOA to support up to 12 multiplexed channels with a bit error rate of 1e-12 at serial data rates of 14 Gbps without channel pre-emphasis, equalization or forward error correction. Individual channels reach error free operation at 25 Gbps and multi-channel operation at 25 Gbps is shown to be compatible with standard 7% overhead hard decision forward error correction. Silicon Photonics transmitter and receiver chips are hybridly integrated with driver and receiver electronics. A detailed link model is derived and verified. Particular emphasis is placed on accurate system level modeling of laser RIN, SOA amplified spontaneous emission noise and receiver noise. The impact of the electrical receiver bandwidth and non-Gaussian statistics on level dependent amplified spontaneous emission noise are investigated in detail. The channel count scalability as limited by SOA saturation is further analyzed taking cross gain modulation and four wave mixing into account. While semiconductor mode-locked lasers have been identified as a potential light source for low cost Datacom WDM transceivers for some time, this is, to the best of our knowledge, the first comprehensive investigation of the overall link budget in a Silicon Photonics implementation showing this technology to be a credible contender for low latency datacenter interconnects.

Exploring multi-layer flow network of international trade based on flow distances

Based on the approach of flow distances, the international trade flow system is studied from the perspective of multi-layer flow network. A model of multi-layer flow network is proposed for modelling and analyzing multiple types of flows in flow systems. Then, flow distances are introduced, and symmetric minimum flow distance is presented. Subsequently, we discuss the establishment of the multi-layer flow networks of international trade from two coupled viewpoints, i.e., the viewpoint of commodity flow and that of money flow. Thus, the multi-layer flow networks of international trade is explored. First, trading "trophic levels" are adopted to depict positions that economies occupied in the flow network. We find that the distributions of trading "trophic levels" have the similar clustering pattern for different types of commodity, and there are some regularities between money flow network and commodity flow network. Second, we find that active and competitive countries trade a wide spectrum of products, while inactive and underdeveloped countries trade a limited variety of products. Besides, some abnormal countries import many types of goods, which the vast majority of countries do not need to import. It may indicate an abnormal economic status. Third, harmonic node centrality is proposed and we find the phenomenon of centrality stratification. It means that competitive countries tend to occupy the central positions in the trading of a large variety of commodities, while underdeveloped countries likely in the peripheral positions in the trading of their limited varieties of products. Fourth, we find that manufactured products have significant larger mean first-passage flow distances from the source to the sink than that of primary products.

Universal Knowledge Discovery from Big Data: Towards a Paradigm Shift from 'Knowledge Discovery' to 'Wisdom Discovery'

Many people hold a vision that big data will provide big insights and have a big impact in the future, and big-data-assisted scientific discovery is seen as an emerging and promising scientific paradigm. However, how to turn big data into deep insights with tremendous value still remains obscure. To meet the challenge, universal knowledge discovery from big data (UKD) is proposed. The new concept focuses on discovering universal knowledge, which exists in the statistical analyses of big data and provides valuable insights into big data. Universal knowledge comes in different forms, e.g., universal patterns, rules, correlations, models and mechanisms. To accelerate big data assisted universal knowledge discovery, a unified research paradigm should be built based on techniques and paradigms from related research domains, especially big data mining and complex systems science. Therefore, I propose an iBEST@SEE methodology. This study lays a solid foundation for the future development of universal knowledge discovery, and offers a pathway to the discovery of "treasure-trove" hidden in big data.

Image Tag Completion by Low-rank Factorization with Dual Reconstruction Structure Preserved

A novel tag completion algorithm is proposed in this paper, which is designed with the following features: 1) Low-rank and error s-parsity: the incomplete initial tagging matrix D is decomposed into the complete tagging matrix A and a sparse error matrix E. However, instead of minimizing its nuclear norm, A is further factor-ized into a basis matrix U and a sparse coefficient matrix V, i.e. D=UV+E. This low-rank formulation encapsulating sparse coding enables our algorithm to recover latent structures from noisy initial data and avoid performing too much denoising; 2) Local reconstruction structure consistency: to steer the completion of D, the local linear reconstruction structures in feature space and tag space are obtained and preserved by U and V respectively. Such a scheme could alleviate the negative effect of distances measured by low-level features and incomplete tags. Thus, we can seek a balance between exploiting as much information and not being mislead to suboptimal performance. Experiments conducted on Corel5k dataset and the newly issued Flickr30Concepts dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.
