EFENet: Reference-based Video Super-Resolution with Enhanced Flow Estimation

In this paper, we consider the problem of reference-based video super-resolution(RefVSR), i.e., how to utilize a high-resolution (HR) reference frame to super-resolve a low-resolution (LR) video sequence. The existing approaches to RefVSR essentially attempt to align the reference and the input sequence, in the presence of resolution gap and long temporal range. However, they either ignore temporal structure within the input sequence, or suffer accumulative alignment errors. To address these issues, we propose EFENet to exploit simultaneously the visual cues contained in the HR reference and the temporal information contained in the LR sequence. EFENet first globally estimates cross-scale flow between the reference and each LR frame. Then our novel flow refinement module of EFENet refines the flow regarding the furthest frame using all the estimated flows, which leverages the global temporal information within the sequence and therefore effectively reduces the alignment errors. We provide comprehensive evaluations to validate the strengths of our approach, and to demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Code is available at https://github.com/IndigoPurple/EFENet.

Geometric two-scale integrators for highly oscillatory system: uniform accuracy and near conservations

In this paper, we consider a class of highly oscillatory Hamiltonian systems which involve a scaling parameter $\varepsilon\in(0,1]$. The problem arises from many physical models in some limit parameter regime or from some time-compressed perturbation problems. The solution of the model exhibits rapid temporal oscillations with $\mathcal{O}(1)$-amplitude and $\mathcal{O}(1/\varepsilon)$-frequency, which makes classical numerical methods inefficient. We apply the two-scale formulation approach to the problem and propose two new time-symmetric numerical integrators. The methods are proved to have the uniform second order accuracy for all $\varepsilon$ at finite times and some near-conservation laws in long times. Numerical experiments on a Hénon-Heiles model, a nonlinear Schrödinger equation and a charged-particle system illustrate the performance of the proposed methods over the existing ones.

Task-Specific Dependency-based Word Embedding Methods

Two task-specific dependency-based word embedding methods are proposed for text classification in this work. In contrast with universal word embedding methods that work for generic tasks, we design task-specific word embedding methods to offer better performance in a specific task. Our methods follow the PPMI matrix factorization framework and derive word contexts from the dependency parse tree. The first one, called the dependency-based word embedding (DWE), chooses keywords and neighbor words of a target word in the dependency parse tree as contexts to build the word-context matrix. The second method, named class-enhanced dependency-based word embedding (CEDWE), learns from word-context as well as word-class co-occurrence statistics. DWE and CEDWE are evaluated on popular text classification datasets to demonstrate their effectiveness. It is shown by experimental results they outperform several state-of-the-art word embedding methods.

Gravitational waves from the quasi-circular inspiral of compact binaries in Einstein-aether theory

We study gravitational waves emitted by a binary system of non-spinning bodies in a quasi-circular inspiral within the framework of Einstein-aether theory. In particular, we compute explicitly and analytically the expressions for the time-domain and frequency-domain waveforms, gravitational wave polarizations, and response functions for both ground- and space-based detectors in the post-Newtonian approximation. We find that, when going beyond leading-order in the post-Newtonian approximation, the non-Einsteinian polarization modes contain terms that depend on both the first and the second harmonics of the orbital phase. We also calculate analytically the corresponding parameterized post-Einsteinian parameters, generalizing the existing framework to allow for different propagation speeds among scalar, vector and tensor modes, without assumptions about the magnitude of its coupling parameters, and meanwhile allowing the binary system to have relative motions with respect to the aether field. Such results allow for the easy construction of Einstein-aether templates that could be used in Bayesian tests of General Relativity in the future.

Parabolic Hitchin Maps and Their Generic Fibers

We set up a BNR correspondence for moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over a curve with a parabolic structure over any algebraically closed field. This leads to a concrete description of generic fibers of the associated strongly parabolic Hitchin map. We also show that the global nilpotent cone is equi-dimensional with half dimension of the total space. As a result, we prove the flatness and surjectivity of this map and the existence of very stable parabolic vector bundles.

A two-step symmetric method for charged-particle dynamics in a normal or strong magnetic feld

The study of the long time conservation for numerical methods poses interesting and challenging questions from the point of view of geometric integration. In this paper, we analyze the long time energy and magnetic moment conservations of two-step symmetric methods for charged-particle dynamics. A two-step symmetric method is proposed and its long time behaviour is shown not only in a normal magnetic feld but also in a strong magnetic feld. The approaches to dealing with these two cases are based on the backward error analysis and modulated Fourier expansion, respectively. It is obtained from the analysis that the method has better long time conservations than the variational method which was researched recently in the literature.

PG$^2$Net: Personalized and Group Preferences Guided Network for Next Place Prediction

Predicting the next place to visit is a key in human mobility behavior modeling, which plays a significant role in various fields, such as epidemic control, urban planning, traffic management, and travel recommendation. To achieve this, one typical solution is designing modules based on RNN to capture their preferences to various locations. Although these RNN-based methods can effectively learn individual's hidden personalized preferences to her visited places, the interactions among users can only be weakly learned through the representations of locations. Targeting this, we propose an end-to-end framework named personalized and group preference guided network (PG$^2$Net), considering the users' preferences to various places at both individual and collective levels. Specifically, PG$^2$Net concatenates Bi-LSTM and attention mechanism to capture each user's long-term mobility tendency. To learn population's group preferences, we utilize spatial and temporal information of the visitations to construct a spatio-temporal dependency module. We adopt a graph embedding method to map users' trajectory into a hidden space, capturing their sequential relation. In addition, we devise an auxiliary loss to learn the vectorial representation of her next location. Experiment results on two Foursquare check-in datasets and one mobile phone dataset indicate the advantages of our model compared to the state-of-the-art baselines. The BINGO Project IV: Simulations for mission performance assessment and preliminary component separation steps

The large-scale distribution of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the Universe is luminous through its 21 cm emission. The goal of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations -- BINGO -- radio telescope is to detect baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) at radio frequencies through 21 cm intensity mapping (IM). The telescope will span the redshift range 0.127 $< z <$ 0.449 with an instantaneous field-of-view of $14.75^{\circ} \times 6.0^{\circ}$. In this work we investigate different constructive and operational scenarios of the instrument by generating sky maps as they would be produced by the instrument. In doing this we use a set of end-to-end IM mission simulations. The maps will additionally be used to evaluate the efficiency of a component separation method (GNILC). We have simulated the kind of data that would be produced in a single-dish IM experiment such as BINGO. According to the results obtained, we have optimized the focal plane design of the telescope. In addition, the application of the GNILC method on simulated data shows that it is feasible to extract the cosmological signal across a wide range of multipoles and redshifts. The results are comparable with the standard principal component analysis method.

The BINGO Project I: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations

Observations of the redshifted 21-cm line of neutral hydrogen (HI) are a new and powerful window of observation that offers us the possibility to map the spatial distribution of cosmic HI and learn about cosmology. BINGO (Baryon Acoustic Oscillations [BAO] from Integrated Neutral Gas Observations) is a new unique radio telescope designed to be one of the first to probe BAO at radio frequencies. BINGO has two science goals: cosmology and astrophysics. Cosmology is the main science goal and the driver for BINGO's design and strategy. The key of BINGO is to detect the low redshift BAO to put strong constraints in the dark sector models. Given the versatility of the BINGO telescope, a secondary goal is astrophysics, where BINGO can help discover and study Fast Radio Bursts (FRB) and other transients, Galactic and extragalactic science. In this paper, we introduce the latest progress of the BINGO project, its science goals, describing the scientific potential of the project in each science and the new developments obtained by the collaboration. We introduce the BINGO project and its science goals and give a general summary of recent developments in construction, science potential and pipeline development obtained by the BINGO collaboration in the past few years. We show that BINGO will be able to obtain competitive constraints for the dark sector, and also that will allow for the discovery of several FRBs in the southern hemisphere. The capacity of BINGO in obtaining information from 21-cm is also tested in the pipeline introduced here. There is still no measurement of the BAO in radio, and studying cosmology in this new window of observations is one of the most promising advances in the field. The BINGO project is a radio telescope that has the goal to be one of the first to perform this measurement and it is currently being built in the northeast of Brazil. (Abridged)

Exact Black Hole Solutions with a Conformally Coupled Scalar Field and Dynamic Ricci Curvature in $f(R)$ Gravity Theories

We report exact black hole solutions in asymptotically flat or (A)dS four-dimensional spacetime with a conformally coupled self-interacting scalar field in $f(R)$ gravity. We first consider the asymptotically flat model $f(R) = R -2α\sqrt{R}$ and derive an exact black hole solution. Then, we consider the asymptotically (A)dS model $f(R) =R -2 Λ-2 α\sqrt{R-4 Λ}$ and derive an exact black hole solution. In both cases the modified gravity parameter $α$, which has the dimension of the inverse mass, cannot be set to zero and the self-interacting potential is determined from the Klein-Gordon equation, preserving the conformal invariance. The thermodynamics of the solutions is also studied.

Ranking Cost: Building An Efficient and Scalable Circuit Routing Planner with Evolution-Based Optimization

Circuit routing has been a historically challenging problem in designing electronic systems such as very large-scale integration (VLSI) and printed circuit boards (PCBs). The main challenge is that connecting a large number of electronic components under specific design rules involves a very large search space. Early solutions are typically designed with hard-coded heuristics, which suffer from problems of non-optimal solutions and lack of flexibility for new design needs. Although a few learning-based methods have been proposed recently, they are typically cumbersome and hard to extend to large-scale applications. In this work, we propose a new algorithm for circuit routing, named Ranking Cost, which innovatively combines search-based methods (i.e., A* algorithm) and learning-based methods (i.e., Evolution Strategies) to form an efficient and trainable router. In our method, we introduce a new set of variables called cost maps, which can help the A* router to find out proper paths to achieve the global objective. We also train a ranking parameter, which can produce the ranking order and further improve the performance of our method. Our algorithm is trained in an end-to-end manner and does not use any artificial data or human demonstration. In the experiments, we compare with the sequential A* algorithm and a canonical reinforcement learning approach, and results show that our method outperforms these baselines with higher connectivity rates and better scalability.

A Noether-Lefschetz Theorem for Spectral Varieties with Applications

We calculate the Picard group of generic (very general) spectral varieties living in the total space of a very ample line bundle over an algebraically closed field $k$ of odd characteristics or characteristic 0. We follow the strategy of Ravindra and Srinivas [RS06,RS09] via formal Picard groups. As an application, we calculate the generic fibers of Hitchin systems over a smooth quintic surface of Picard number 1.

Concepts and status of Chinese space gravitational wave detection projects

Gravitational wave (GW) detection in space probes GW spectrum that is inaccessible from the Earth. In addition to LISA project led by European Space Agency, and the DECIGO detector proposed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, two Chinese space-based GW observatories -- TianQin and Taiji -- are planned to be launched in the 2030s. TianQin has a unique concept in its design with a geocentric orbit. Taiji's design is similar to LISA, but is more ambitious with longer arm distance. Both facilities are complementary to LISA, considering that TianQin is sensitive to higher frequencies and Taiji probes similar frequencies but with higher sensitivity. In this Perspective we explain the concepts for both facilities and introduce the development milestones of TianQin and Taiji projects in testing extraordinary technologies to pave the way for future space-based GW detections. Considering that LISA, TianQin and Taiji have similar scientific goals, all are scheduled to be launched around the 2030s and will operate concurrently, we discuss possible collaborations among them to improve GW source localization and characterization.

Horizon curvature and spacetime structure influences on black hole scalarization

Black hole spontaneous scalarization has been attracting more and more attention as it circumvents the well-known no-hair theorems. In this work, we study the scalarization in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory with a probe scalar field in a black hole background with different curvatures. We first probe the signal of black hole scalarization with positive curvature in different spacetimes. The scalar field in AdS spacetime could be formed easier than that in flat case. Then, we investigate the scalar field around AdS black holes with negative and zero curvatures. Comparing with negative and zero cases, the scalar field near AdS black hole with positive curvature could be much easier to emerge. And in negative curvature case, the scalar field is the most difficult to be bounded near the horizon.

Object-aware Long-short-range Spatial Alignment for Few-Shot Fine-Grained Image Classification

The goal of few-shot fine-grained image classification is to recognize rarely seen fine-grained objects in the query set, given only a few samples of this class in the support set. Previous works focus on learning discriminative image features from a limited number of training samples for distinguishing various fine-grained classes, but ignore one important fact that spatial alignment of the discriminative semantic features between the query image with arbitrary changes and the support image, is also critical for computing the semantic similarity between each support-query pair. In this work, we propose an object-aware long-short-range spatial alignment approach, which is composed of a foreground object feature enhancement (FOE) module, a long-range semantic correspondence (LSC) module and a short-range spatial manipulation (SSM) module. The FOE is developed to weaken background disturbance and encourage higher foreground object response. To address the problem of long-range object feature misalignment between support-query image pairs, the LSC is proposed to learn the transferable long-range semantic correspondence by a designed feature similarity metric. Further, the SSM module is developed to refine the transformed support feature after the long-range step to align short-range misaligned features (or local details) with the query features. Extensive experiments have been conducted on four benchmark datasets, and the results show superior performance over most state-of-the-art methods under both 1-shot and 5-shot classification scenarios.

Densely Semantic Enhancement for Domain Adaptive Region-free Detectors

Unsupervised domain adaptive object detection aims to adapt a well-trained detector from its original source domain with rich labeled data to a new target domain with unlabeled data. Previous works focus on improving the domain adaptability of region-based detectors, e.g., Faster-RCNN, through matching cross-domain instance-level features that are explicitly extracted from a region proposal network (RPN). However, this is unsuitable for region-free detectors such as single shot detector (SSD), which perform a dense prediction from all possible locations in an image and do not have the RPN to encode such instance-level features. As a result, they fail to align important image regions and crucial instance-level features between the domains of region-free detectors. In this work, we propose an adversarial module to strengthen the cross-domain matching of instance-level features for region-free detectors. Firstly, to emphasize the important regions of image, the DSEM learns to predict a transferable foreground enhancement mask that can be utilized to suppress the background disturbance in an image. Secondly, considering that region-free detectors recognize objects of different scales using multi-scale feature maps, the DSEM encodes both multi-level semantic representations and multi-instance spatial-contextual relationships across different domains. Finally, the DSEM is pluggable into different region-free detectors, ultimately achieving the densely semantic feature matching via adversarial learning. Extensive experiments have been conducted on PASCAL VOC, Clipart, Comic, Watercolor, and FoggyCityscape benchmarks, and their results well demonstrate that the proposed approach not only improves the domain adaptability of region-free detectors but also outperforms existing domain adaptive region-based detectors under various domain shift settings.

Optimal Scheduling of Integrated Demand Response-Enabled Community Integrated Energy Systems in Uncertain Environments

The community integrated energy system (CIES) is an essential energy internet carrier that has recently been the focus of much attention. A scheduling model based on chance-constrained programming is proposed for integrated demand response (IDR)-enabled CIES in uncertain environments to minimize the system operating costs, where an IDR program is used to explore the potential interaction ability of electricity-gas-heat flexible loads and electric vehicles. Moreover, power to gas (P2G) and micro-gas turbine (MT), as links of multi-energy carriers, are adopted to strengthen the coupling of different energy subsystems. Sequence operation theory (SOT) and linearization methods are employed to transform the original model into a solvable mixed-integer linear programming model. Simulation results on a practical CIES in North China demonstrate an improvement in the CIES operational economy via the coordination of IDR and renewable uncertainties, with P2G and MT enhancing the system operational flexibility and user comprehensive satisfaction. The CIES operation is able to achieve a trade-off between economy and system reliability by setting a suitable confidence level for the spinning reserve constraints. Besides, the proposed solution method outperforms the Hybrid Intelligent Algorithm in terms of both optimization results and calculation efficiency.

A Critical Assessment of Black Hole Solutions With a Linear Term in Their Redshift Function

Different theories of gravity can admit the same black hole solution, but the parameters usually have different physical interpretations. In this work we study in depth the linear term $βr$ in the redshift function of black holes, which arises in conformal gravity, de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity, $f(R)$ gravity (as approximate solution) and general relativity. Geometrically we quantify the parameter $β$ in terms of the curvature invariants. Astrophysically we found that $β$ can be expressed in terms of the cosmological constant, the photon orbit radius and the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) radius. The metric degeneracy can be broken once black hole thermodynamics is taken into account. Notably, we show that under Hawking evaporation, different physical theories with the same black hole solution (at the level of the metric) can lead to black hole remnants with different values of their physical masses with direct consequences on their viability as dark matter candidates. In particular, the mass of the graviton in massive gravity can be expressed in terms of the cosmological constant and of the formation epoch of the remnant. Furthermore the upper bound of remnant mass can be estimated to be around $0.5 \times 10^{27}$ kg.
