Solid-Fluid Interaction with Surface-Tension-Dominant Contact

We propose a novel three-way coupling method to model the contact interaction between solid and fluid driven by strong surface tension. At the heart of our physical model is a thin liquid membrane that simultaneously couples to both the liquid volume and the rigid objects, facilitating accurate momentum transfer, collision processing, and surface tension calculation. This model is implemented numerically under a hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian framework where the membrane is modelled as a simplicial mesh and the liquid volume is simulated on a background Cartesian grid. We devise a monolithic solver to solve the interactions among the three systems of liquid, solid, and membrane. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method through an array of rigid-fluid contact simulations dominated by strong surface tension, which enables the faithful modeling of a host of new surface-tension-dominant phenomena including: objects with higher density than water can keep afloat on top of it; 'Cheerios effect' about floating objects that do not normally float attract one another; surface tension weakening effect caused by surface-active constituents.

Towards an Online Empathetic Chatbot with Emotion Causes

Existing emotion-aware conversational models usually focus on controlling the response contents to align with a specific emotion class, whereas empathy is the ability to understand and concern the feelings and experience of others. Hence, it is critical to learn the causes that evoke the users' emotion for empathetic responding, a.k.a. emotion causes. To gather emotion causes in online environments, we leverage counseling strategies and develop an empathetic chatbot to utilize the causal emotion information. On a real-world online dataset, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach by comparing our chatbot with several SOTA methods using automatic metrics, expert-based human judgements as well as user-based online evaluation.

AnomalyHop: An SSL-based Image Anomaly Localization Method

An image anomaly localization method based on the successive subspace learning (SSL) framework, called AnomalyHop, is proposed in this work. AnomalyHop consists of three modules: 1) feature extraction via successive subspace learning (SSL), 2) normality feature distributions modeling via Gaussian models, and 3) anomaly map generation and fusion. Comparing with state-of-the-art image anomaly localization methods based on deep neural networks (DNNs), AnomalyHop is mathematically transparent, easy to train, and fast in its inference speed. Besides, its area under the ROC curve (ROC-AUC) performance on the MVTec AD dataset is 95.9%, which is among the best of several benchmarking methods. Our codes are publicly available at Github.

Recent Advances on Sub-Nyquist Sampling-Based Wideband Spectrum Sensing

Cognitive radio (CR) is a promising technology enabling efficient utilization of the spectrum resource for future wireless systems. As future CR networks are envisioned to operate over a wide frequency range, advanced wideband spectrum sensing (WBSS) capable of quickly and reliably detecting idle spectrum bands across a wide frequency span is essential. In this article, we provide an overview of recent advances on sub-Nyquist sampling-based WBSS techniques, including compressed sensing-based methods and compressive covariance sensing-based methods. An elaborate discussion of the pros and cons of each approach is presented, along with some challenging issues for future research. A comparative study suggests that the compressive covariance sensing-based approach offers a more competitive solution for reliable real-time WBSS.

Sky localization of space-based gravitational wave detectors

Localizing the sky position of the gravitational wave source is a key scientific goal for gravitational wave observations. Employing the Fisher information matrix approximation, we compute the angular resolutions of LISA and TianQin, two planned space-based gravitational wave detectors and examine how detectors' configuration properties, such as the orientation change of the detector plane, heliocentric or geocentric motion and the arm length etc. affect the accuracy of source localization. We find that the amplitude modulation due to the annual changing orientation of the detector plane helps LISA get better accuracy in the sky localization and better sky coverage at frequencies below several mHz, and its effect on TianQin is negligible although the orientation of TianQin's detector plane is fixed. At frequencies above roughly 30mHz, TianQin's ability in the sky localization is better than LISA. Further we explore potential space detector networks for fast and accurate localization of the gravitational wave sources. The LISA-TianQin network has better ability in sky localization for sources with frequencies in the range 1-100 mHz and the network has larger sky coverage for the angular resolution than the individual detector.

The Hidden cost of the Edge: A Performance Comparison of Edge and Cloud Latencies

Edge computing has emerged as a popular paradigm for running latency-sensitive applications due to its ability to offer lower network latencies to end-users. In this paper, we argue that despite its lower network latency, the resource-constrained nature of the edge can result in higher end-to-end latency, especially at higher utilizations, when compared to cloud data centers. We study this edge performance inversion problem through an analytic comparison of edge and cloud latencies and analyze conditions under which the edge can yield worse performance than the cloud. To verify our analytic results, we conduct a detailed experimental comparison of the edge and the cloud latencies using a realistic application and real cloud workloads. Both our analytical and experimental results show that even at moderate utilizations, the edge queuing delays can offset the benefits of lower network latencies, and even result in performance inversion where running in the cloud would provide superior latencies. We finally discuss practical implications of our results and provide insights into how application designers and service providers should design edge applications and systems to avoid these pitfalls.

LaSS: Running Latency Sensitive Serverless Computations at the Edge

Serverless computing has emerged as a new paradigm for running short-lived computations in the cloud. Due to its ability to handle IoT workloads, there has been considerable interest in running serverless functions at the edge. However, the constrained nature of the edge and the latency sensitive nature of workloads result in many challenges for serverless platforms. In this paper, we present LaSS, a platform that uses model-driven approaches for running latency-sensitive serverless computations on edge resources. LaSS uses principled queuing-based methods to determine an appropriate allocation for each hosted function and auto-scales the allocated resources in response to workload dynamics. LaSS uses a fair-share allocation approach to guarantee a minimum of allocated resources to each function in the presence of overload. In addition, it utilizes resource reclamation methods based on container deflation and termination to reassign resources from over-provisioned functions to under-provisioned ones. We implement a prototype of our approach on an OpenWhisk serverless edge cluster and conduct a detailed experimental evaluation. Our results show that LaSS can accurately predict the resources needed for serverless functions in the presence of highly dynamic workloads, and reprovision container capacity within hundreds of milliseconds while maintaining fair share allocation guarantees.

Visually Imperceptible Adversarial Patch Attacks on Digital Images

The vulnerability of deep neural networks (DNNs) to adversarial examples has attracted more attention. Many algorithms have been proposed to craft powerful adversarial examples. However, most of these algorithms modified the global or local region of pixels without taking network explanations into account. Hence, the perturbations are redundant, which are easily detected by human eyes. In this paper, we propose a novel method to generate local region perturbations. The main idea is to find a contributing feature region (CFR) of an image by simulating the human attention mechanism and then add perturbations to CFR. Furthermore, a soft mask matrix is designed on the basis of an activation map to finely represent the contributions of each pixel in CFR. With this soft mask, we develop a new loss function with inverse temperature to search for optimal perturbations in CFR. Due to the network explanations, the perturbations added to CFR are more effective than those added to other regions. Extensive experiments conducted on CIFAR-10 and ILSVRC2012 demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, including attack success rate, imperceptibility, and transferability.

Accuracy of estimation of parameters with space-borne gravitational wave observatory

Employing the Fisher information matrix analysis, we estimate parameter errors of TianQin and LISA for monochromatic gravitational waves. With the long-wavelength approximation we derive analytical formulas for the parameter estimation errors. We separately analyze the effects of the amplitude modulation due to the changing orientation of the detector plane and the Doppler modulation due to the translational motion of the center of the detector around the Sun. We disclose that in the low frequency regime there exist different patterns in angular resolutions and estimation errors of sources' parameters between LISA and TianQin, the angular resolution falls off as $S_n(f)/f^2$ for TianQin but $S_n(f)$ for LISA, and the estimation errors of the other parameters fall off as $\sqrt{S_n(f)}/f$ for TianQin but $\sqrt{S_n(f)}$ for LISA. In the medium frequency regime we observe the same pattern where the angular resolution falls off as $S_n(f)/f^2$ and the estimation errors of the other parameters fall off as $\sqrt{S_n(f)}$ for both TianQin and LISA. In the high frequency regime, the long-wavelength approximation fails, we numerically calculate the parameter estimation errors for LISA and TianQin and find that the parameter estimation errors measured by TianQin are smaller than those by LISA.

Evolution of Anti-de Sitter black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory

We study the nonlinear evolution of the spherical symmetric black holes under a small neutral scalar field perturbation in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with coupling function $f(ϕ)=e^{-bϕ}$ in asymptotic anti-de Sitter spacetime. The non-minimal coupling between scalar and Maxwell fields allows the transmission of the energy from the Maxwell field to the scalar field, but also behaves as a repulsive force for the scalar. The scalar field oscillates with damping amplitude and converges to a final value by a power law. The irreducible mass of the black hole increases abruptly at initial times and then saturates to the final value exponentially. The saturating rate is twice the decaying rate of the dominant mode of the scalar. The effects of the black hole charge, the cosmological constant and the coupling parameter on the evolution are studied in detail. When the initial configuration is a naked singularity spacetime with a large charge to mass ratio, a horizon will form soon and hide the singularity.

Dynamic Texture Synthesis by Incorporating Long-range Spatial and Temporal Correlations

The main challenge of dynamic texture synthesis lies in how to maintain spatial and temporal consistency in synthesized videos. The major drawback of existing dynamic texture synthesis models comes from poor treatment of the long-range texture correlation and motion information. To address this problem, we incorporate a new loss term, called the Shifted Gram loss, to capture the structural and long-range correlation of the reference texture video. Furthermore, we introduce a frame sampling strategy to exploit long-period motion across multiple frames. With these two new techniques, the application scope of existing texture synthesis models can be extended. That is, they can synthesize not only homogeneous but also structured dynamic texture patterns. Thorough experimental results are provided to demonstrate that our proposed dynamic texture synthesis model offers state-of-the-art visual performance.

Universal co-existence of photovoltaics and ferroelectricity from two-dimensional 3R bilayer BX (X=P, As, Sb)

The intertwined ferroelectricity and photovoltaics in two-dimensional (2D) materials will enable the favorable improvement and control of photovoltaic preformances. In this paper, we take 2D 3R bilayer BX (X=P, As, Sb) as model systems to study the photovoltaic characteristics of intrinsic 2D out-of-plane (OOP) ferroelectric material, and try to explore a strategy to regulate the photoelectric properties by changing the strength of ferroelectric polarization. Due to the spatial inversion symmetry broken caused by special 3R stacking, spontaneous OOP ferroelectric polarization will appear in the 3R bilayer BX, which can be swichable through a specific interlayer sliding. The OOP ferroelectricity leads to charge transfer between layers, realizes efficient spatial separation between holes and electrons, and forms the characteristics of type-II band alignment. Moreover, due to perfect lattice match on account of two identical layers, the 3R bilayer BX is more stable and easy to realize in experiments than most of traditional 2D heterostructures made up of different materials. The 3R bilayer BX shows moderate band gap, ultra-high carrier mobility and efficient optical absorption, and its nano-devices present large photocurrent, high photon responsivity and excellent external quantum efficiency. More importantly, all these photoelectric parameters depend on the intrinsic OOP ferroelectric strength. By changing the interlayer distance of bilayer BX, the ferroelectric polarization can be regulated effectively to achieve the optimal photoelectric performance. Finally, we emphasize the importance and universality of spatial inversion symmetry broken in layered materials beyond the 3R bilayer BX to realize the co-regulation of ferroelectric and photovoltaics.

Exact charged black hole solutions in D-dimensions in f(R) gravity

We consider Maxwell-f(R) gravity and obtain an exact charged black hole solution with dynamic curvature in D-dimensions. Considering a spherically symmetric metric ansatz and without specifying the form of f(R) we fnd a general black hole solution in D-dimensions. This general black hole solution can be reduced to the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole in D-dimensions in Einstein gravity and to the known charged black hole solutions with constant curvature in f(R) gravity. Restricting the parameters of the general solution we get polynomial solutions which reveal novel properties when compared to RN black holes. Specifcally we study the solution in (3 + 1)-dimensions in which the form of f(R) can be solved explicitly giving a dynamic curvature and compare it with the RN black hole. We also carry out a detailed study of its thermodynamics.

Self-supervised Video Representation Learning by Context and Motion Decoupling

A key challenge in self-supervised video representation learning is how to effectively capture motion information besides context bias. While most existing works implicitly achieve this with video-specific pretext tasks (e.g., predicting clip orders, time arrows, and paces), we develop a method that explicitly decouples motion supervision from context bias through a carefully designed pretext task. Specifically, we take the keyframes and motion vectors in compressed videos (e.g., in H.264 format) as the supervision sources for context and motion, respectively, which can be efficiently extracted at over 500 fps on the CPU. Then we design two pretext tasks that are jointly optimized: a context matching task where a pairwise contrastive loss is cast between video clip and keyframe features; and a motion prediction task where clip features, passed through an encoder-decoder network, are used to estimate motion features in a near future. These two tasks use a shared video backbone and separate MLP heads. Experiments show that our approach improves the quality of the learned video representation over previous works, where we obtain absolute gains of 16.0% and 11.1% in video retrieval recall on UCF101 and HMDB51, respectively. Moreover, we find the motion prediction to be a strong regularization for video networks, where using it as an auxiliary task improves the accuracy of action recognition with a margin of 7.4%~13.8%.

Primordial black holes and secondary gravitational waves from the Higgs field

We devise a novel mechanism and for the first time demonstrate that the Higgs model in particle physics can drive the inflation to satisfy the cosmic microwave background observations and simultaneously enhance the curvature perturbations at small scales to explain the abundance of dark matter in our universe in the form of primordial black holes. The production of primordial black holes is accompanied by the secondary gravitational waves induced by the first order Higgs fluctuations which is expected observable by space-based gravitational wave detectors. We propose possible cosmological probes of Higgs field in the future observations for primordial black holes dark matter or stochastic gravitational waves.

Admissible ways of merging p-values under arbitrary dependence

Methods of merging several p-values into a single p-value are important in their own right and widely used in multiple hypothesis testing. This paper is the first to systematically study the admissibility (in Wald's sense) of p-merging functions and their domination structure, without any information on the dependence structure of the input p-values. As a technical tool we use the notion of e-values, which are alternatives to p-values recently promoted by several authors. We obtain several results on the representation of admissible p-merging functions via e-values and on (in)admissibility of existing p-merging functions. By introducing new admissible p-merging functions, we show that some classic merging methods can be strictly improved to enhance power without compromising validity under arbitrary dependence.

Improve GAN-based Neural Vocoder using Pointwise Relativistic LeastSquare GAN

GAN-based neural vocoders, such as Parallel WaveGAN and MelGAN have attracted great interest due to their lightweight and parallel structures, enabling them to generate high fidelity waveform in a real-time manner. In this paper, inspired by Relativistic GAN, we introduce a novel variant of the LSGAN framework under the context of waveform synthesis, named Pointwise Relativistic LSGAN (PRLSGAN). In this approach, we take the truism score distribution into consideration and combine the original MSE loss with the proposed pointwise relative discrepancy loss to increase the difficulty of the generator to fool the discriminator, leading to improved generation quality. Moreover, PRLSGAN is a general-purposed framework that can be combined with any GAN-based neural vocoder to enhance its generation quality. Experiments have shown a consistent performance boost based on Parallel WaveGAN and MelGAN, demonstrating the effectiveness and strong generalization ability of our proposed PRLSGAN neural vocoders.

Dynamical charged black hole spontaneous scalarization in Anti-de Sitter spacetimes

We study the fully nonlinear dynamics of black hole spontaneous scalarizations in Einstein-Maxwell scalar theory with coupling function $f(ϕ)=e^{-bϕ^{2}}$, which can transform usual Reissner-Nordström Anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS) black holes into hairy black holes. Fixing the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner mass of the system, the initial scalar perturbation will destroy the original RN-AdS black hole and turn it into a hairy black hole provided that the constant $-b$ in the coupling function and the charge of the original black hole are sufficiently large, while the cosmological constant is small enough. In the scalarization process, we observe that the black hole irreducible mass initially increases exponentially, then it approaches to and finally saturates at a finite value. Choosing stronger coupling and larger black hole charge, we find that the black hole mass exponentially grows earlier and it takes a longer time for a hairy black hole to be developed and stabilized. We further examine phase structure properties in the scalarization process and confirm the observations in the non-linear dynamical study.
