From Species to Cultivar: Soybean Cultivar Recognition using Multiscale Sliding Chord Matching of Leaf Images

Leaf image recognition techniques have been actively researched for plant species identification. However it remains unclear whether leaf patterns can provide sufficient information for cultivar recognition. This paper reports the first attempt on soybean cultivar recognition from plant leaves which is not only a challenging research problem but also important for soybean cultivar evaluation, selection and production in agriculture. In this paper, we propose a novel multiscale sliding chord matching (MSCM) approach to extract leaf patterns that are distinctive for soybean cultivar identification. A chord is defined to slide along the contour for measuring the synchronised patterns of exterior shape and interior appearance of soybean leaf images. A multiscale sliding chord strategy is developed to extract features in a coarse-to-fine hierarchical order. A joint description that integrates the leaf descriptors from different parts of a soybean plant is proposed for further enhancing the discriminative power of cultivar description. We built a cultivar leaf image database, SoyCultivar, consisting of 1200 sample leaf images from 200 soybean cultivars for performance evaluation. Encouraging experimental results of the proposed method in comparison to the state-of-the-art leaf species recognition methods demonstrate the availability of cultivar information in soybean leaves and effectiveness of the proposed MSCM for soybean cultivar identification, which may advance the research in leaf recognition from species to cultivar.

Gravitational waveforms and radiation powers of the triple system PSR J0337+1715 in modified theories of gravity

In this paper, we study the gravitational waveforms, polarizations and radiation powers of the first relativistic triple systems PSR J0337 + 1715, observed in 2014, by using the post-Newtonian approximations to their lowest order. Although they cannot be observed either by current or next generation of the detectors, they do provide useful information to test different theories of gravity. In particular, we carry out the studies in three different theories, general relativity (GR), Brans-Dicke (BD) gravity, and Einstein-aether ($æ$) theory. The tensor modes $h_{+}$ and $h_{\times}$ exist in all three theories and have almost equal amplitudes. Their frequencies are all peaked at two locations, $ f^{(+, \times)}_1 \simeq 0.0686656 μ$Hz and $ f^{(+, \times)}_2 \simeq 14.2138 μ$Hz, which are about twice of the outer and inner orbital frequencies of the triple system, as predicted in GR. In $æ$-theory, all the six polarization modes are different from zero, but the breathing $h_b$ and longitudinal $h_L$ modes are not independent and also peaked at two frequencies, but at the frequencies, $ f^{(b, L, æ)}_{1} \simeq 0.0457771 μ$Hz and $f^{(b, L, æ)}_{ 2} \simeq 7.09545 μ$Hz. A similar phenomenon is also observed in BD gravity, in which only the three modes $h_{+},\; h_{\times}$ and $h_{b}$ exit. We also study the radiation powers, and find that the quadrupole emission in each of the three theories has almost the same amplitude, but the dipole emission can be as big as the quadrupole emission in $æ$-theory. This can provide a very promising window to obtain severe constraints on $æ$-theory by the multi-band gravitational wave astronomy.

Detecting the processes of colliding plane gravitational waves by electromagnetic response signals

In this paper, we have considered how to detect the processes of plane gravitational waves colliding. The degenerate Ferrari-Ibanez solution describes the collision of plane gravitational waves with aligned linear polarization, and the solution of the interaction region is Schwarzschild-like metric by taking coordinate transformation, which impels us more interesting to detect the process to explore. We have calculated explicitly out the solutions of the electromagnetic field produced by the plane gravitational wave and the colliding region of plane gravitational waves perturbing a weak magnetic field background. The magnitudes are so small that the likelihood of detecting gravitational waves is only just emergence within the range of the most high-level modern apparatus such as the further upgraded aLIGO, but we can judge whether the collision process has occurred or not by measuring the amplitude and waveform of electromagnetic wave properties. Moreover, detecting electromagnetic waves can offer a new method to verify general relativity.

Focus Your Attention: A Bidirectional Focal Attention Network for Image-Text Matching

Learning semantic correspondence between image and text is significant as it bridges the semantic gap between vision and language. The key challenge is to accurately find and correlate shared semantics in image and text. Most existing methods achieve this goal by representing the shared semantic as a weighted combination of all the fragments (image regions or text words), where fragments relevant to the shared semantic obtain more attention, otherwise less. However, despite relevant ones contribute more to the shared semantic, irrelevant ones will more or less disturb it, and thus will lead to semantic misalignment in the correlation phase. To address this issue, we present a novel Bidirectional Focal Attention Network (BFAN), which not only allows to attend to relevant fragments but also diverts all the attention into these relevant fragments to concentrate on them. The main difference with existing works is they mostly focus on learning attention weight while our BFAN focus on eliminating irrelevant fragments from the shared semantic. The focal attention is achieved by pre-assigning attention based on inter-modality relation, identifying relevant fragments based on intra-modality relation and reassigning attention. Furthermore, the focal attention is jointly applied in both image-to-text and text-to-image directions, which enables to avoid preference to long text or complex image. Experiments show our simple but effective framework significantly outperforms state-of-the-art, with relative Recall@1 gains of 2.2% on both Flicr30K and MSCOCO benchmarks.

On the Strong Equivalences of LPMLN Programs

By incorporating the methods of Answer Set Programming (ASP) and Markov Logic Networks (MLN), LPMLN becomes a powerful tool for non-monotonic, inconsistent and uncertain knowledge representation and reasoning. To facilitate the applications and extend the understandings of LPMLN, we investigate the strong equivalences between LPMLN programs in this paper, which is regarded as an important property in the field of logic programming. In the field of ASP, two programs P and Q are strongly equivalent, iff for any ASP program R, the programs P and Q extended by R have the same stable models. In other words, an ASP program can be replaced by one of its strong equivalent without considering its context, which helps us to simplify logic programs, enhance inference engines, construct human-friendly knowledge bases etc. Since LPMLN is a combination of ASP and MLN, the notions of strong equivalences in LPMLN is quite different from that in ASP. Firstly, we present the notions of p-strong and w-strong equivalences between LPMLN programs. Secondly, we present a characterization of the notions by generalizing the SE-model approach in ASP. Finally, we show the use of strong equivalences in simplifying LPMLN programs, and present a sufficient and necessary syntactic condition that guarantees the strong equivalence between a single LPMLN rule and the empty program.

On quasinormal modes for the Vaidya metric in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime

In this work, we present a numerical scheme to study the quasinormal modes of the time-dependent Vaidya black hole metric in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. The proposed algorithm is primarily based on a generalized matrix method for quasinormal modes. The main feature of the present approach is that the quasinormal frequency, as a function of time, is obtained by a generalized secular equation and therefore a satisfactory degree of precision is achieved. The implications of the results are discussed.

Graph Representation Learning: A Survey

Research on graph representation learning has received a lot of attention in recent years since many data in real-world applications come in form of graphs. High-dimensional graph data are often in irregular form, which makes them more difficult to analyze than image/video/audio data defined on regular lattices. Various graph embedding techniques have been developed to convert the raw graph data into a low-dimensional vector representation while preserving the intrinsic graph properties. In this review, we first explain the graph embedding task and its challenges. Next, we review a wide range of graph embedding techniques with insights. Then, we evaluate several state-of-the-art methods against small and large datasets and compare their performance. Finally, potential applications and future directions are presented.

On Distribution Patterns of Power Flow Solutions

A fundamental challenge in computer analysis of power flow is the rigorous understanding of the impact of different loading levels on the solutions of the power flow equation. This letter presents a comprehensive study of possible numerical solutions that may arise as the loading level varies. In particular, a type of "false" load flow solutions is reported for the first time as a legitimate numerical solutions but with no engineering justification. The existence and the mechanism of why this category of solutions exist are rigorously analyzed. The probability mass function of voltage solution is shown to be less dependent on loading levels. Furthermore, numbers of all actual solutions and those solutions within engineering limits are summarized. This letter presents a first attempt to compute such huge numbers of solutions to the tested systems, and analyze their distribution patterns. All solution sets investigated in this letter are posted online associated with this letter to support any further research purposes.

The connection between holographic entanglement and complexity of purification

In this work we study how entanglement of purification (EoP) and the new quantity of "complexity of purification" are related to each other using the $E_P=E_W$ conjecture. First, we consider two strips in the same side of a boundary and study the relationships between the entanglement of purification of this mixed state and the parameters of the system such as dimension, temperature, length of the strips and the distance between them. Next, using the same setup, we introduce two definitions for the complexity of mixed states, complexity of purification (CoP) and the interval volume (VI). We study their connections to other parameters similar to the EoP case. Then, we extend our study to more general examples of BTZ black holes solution in massive gravity, charged black holes and multipartite systems. Finally, we give various interpretations of our results using resource theories such as LOCC and also bit thread picture.

Holographic entanglement entropy and complexity in St$\ddot{u}$ckelberg superconductor

The holographic superconductors, as one of the most important application of gauge/gravity duality, promote the study of strongly coupled superconductors via classical general relativity living in one higher dimension. One of the interesting properties in holographic superconductor is the appearance of first and second order phase transitions. Recently, another active studies in holographic framework is the holographic entanglement entropy and complexity evaluated from gravity side. In this note, we study the properties of the holographic entanglement entropy and complexity crossing both first and second order phase transitions in St$\ddot{u}$ckelberg superconductor. We find that they behave differently in two types of phase transitions. We argue that holographic entanglement entropy and complexity conjectured with the volume can also be a possible probe to the type of superconducting phase transition.

One-stage explicit trigonometric integrators for effectively solving quasilinear wave equations

In this paper, one-stage explicit trigonometric integrators for solving quasilinear wave equations are formulated and studied. For solving wave equations, we first introduce trigonometric integrators as the semidiscretization in time and then consider a spectral Galerkin method for the discretization in space. We show that one-stage explicit trigonometric integrators in time have second-order convergence and the result is also true for the fullydiscrete scheme without requiring any CFL-type coupling of the discretization parameters. The results are proved by using energy techniques, which are widely applied in the numerical analysis of methods for partial differential equations.

Influence of Load Models on Equilibria, Stability and Algebraic Manifolds of Power System Differential-Algebraic System

Load models have a great impact on voltage behaviors as well as power system transient dynamics. Extensive work has been done on this topic, proposing appropriate load models and capturing better load behaviors during transient. This paper presents a comprehensive study to investigate the geometric and topological changes induced by different load models for the traditional power system differential-algebraic equations. Specifically, we attempt to reveal the deformation of equilibria, stability regions, and algebraic manifolds during a continuous evolution of load model. Several findings are presented in the paper, some of which countering traditional recognitions and intuitions. A major discovery is that the load model with a large proportion of constant impedance and a small proportion of constant power exhibits much more complex features than the load model with the reversed proportions of impedance and power. The increase of complexity is thoroughly recorded and investigated by the changes of geometric properties and mutations of topological invariants in the sense of equilibria, stability regions, and algebraic manifolds for the DAE system. However, most of the changes seem to occur on unstable components of algebraic manifolds or near the singular boundary surfaces, suggesting a limited variation of dynamical behaviors on the stable component.

Layer Dependent Interfacial Transport and Optoelectrical Properties of MoS2 on Ultra-flat Metals

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are layered semiconducting van der Waal crystals and promising materials for a wide range of electronic and optoelectronic devices. Realizing practical electrical and optoelectronic device applications requires a connection between a metal junction and a TMD semiconductor. Hence, a complete understanding of electronic band alignments and the potential barrier heights governing the transport through a metal-TMD-metal junction is critical. But, there is a knowledge gap; it is not clear how the energy bands of a TMD align while in contact with a metal as a function of the number of layers. In pursuit of removing this knowledge gap, we have performed conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM) of few layered (1-5) MoS2 immobilized on ultra-flat conducting Au surfaces (root mean square (RMS) surface roughness <0.2 nm) and indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate (RMS surface roughness <0.7 nm) forming a vertical metal (conductive-AFM tip)-semiconductor-metal device. We have observed that the current increases as the number of layers increases up to 5 layers. By applying Fowler-Nordheim tunneling theory, we have determined the barrier heights for different layers and observed that the barrier height decreases as the number of layers increases. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculation, we successfully demonstrated that the barrier height decreases as the layer number increases. By illuminating the TMDs on a transparent ultra-flat conducting ITO substrate, we observed a reduction in current when compared to the current measured in the dark, hence demonstrating negative photoconductivity. Our study provides a fundamental understanding of the local electronic and optoelectronic behaviors of TMD-metal junction, and may pave an avenue toward developing nanoscale electronic devices with tailored layer-dependent transport properties.

A filtered Boris algorithm for charged-particle dynamics in a strong magnetic field

A modification of the standard Boris algorithm, called filtered Boris algorithm, is proposed for the numerical integration of the equations of motion of charged particles in a strong non-uniform magnetic field in the asymptotic scaling known as maximal ordering. With an appropriate choice of filters, second-order error bounds in the position and in the parallel velocity, and first-order error bounds in the normal velocity are obtained with respect to the scaling parameter. The proof compares the modulated Fourier expansions of the exact and the numerical solutions. Numerical experiments illustrate the error behaviour of the filtered Boris algorithm.

Testing a quintessence model with Yukawa interaction from cosmological observations and N-body simulations

We consider a quintessence model with Yukawa interaction between dark energy and dark matter and constrain this model by employing the recent cosmological data including the updated cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements from Planck 2015, the weak gravitational lensing measurements from Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) and redshift-space distortions. We find that an interaction in the dark sector is compatible with observations. The updated Planck data can significantly improve the constraints compared with the previous results from Planck 2013, while the KiDS data has less constraining power than Planck. The Yukawa interaction model is found to be moderately favored by Planck and able to alleviate the discordance between weak lensing measurements and CMB measurements as previously inferred from the standard Lambda cold dark matter model. N-body simulations for Yukawa interaction model is also performed. We find that using the halo density profile is plausible to improve the constraints significantly in the future.

Neural Collective Entity Linking Based on Recurrent Random Walk Network Learning

Benefiting from the excellent ability of neural networks on learning semantic representations, existing studies for entity linking (EL) have resorted to neural networks to exploit both the local mention-to-entity compatibility and the global interdependence between different EL decisions for target entity disambiguation. However, most neural collective EL methods depend entirely upon neural networks to automatically model the semantic dependencies between different EL decisions, which lack of the guidance from external knowledge. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end neural network with recurrent random-walk layers for collective EL, which introduces external knowledge to model the semantic interdependence between different EL decisions. Specifically, we first establish a model based on local context features, and then stack random-walk layers to reinforce the evidence for related EL decisions into high-probability decisions, where the semantic interdependence between candidate entities is mainly induced from an external knowledge base. Finally, a semantic regularizer that preserves the collective EL decisions consistency is incorporated into the conventional objective function, so that the external knowledge base can be fully exploited in collective EL decisions. Experimental results and in-depth analysis on various datasets show that our model achieves better performance than other state-of-the-art models. General Black Hole Solutions in (2+1)-dimensions with a Scalar Field Non-Minimally Coupled to Gravity

We discuss black hole solutions in (2+1)-dimensions with a scalar field non-minimally coupled to Einstein's gravity in the presence of a cosmological constant and a self-interacting scalar potential. Without specifying the form of the potential, we find a general solution of the field equations, which includes all the known asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole solutions in (2+1)-dimensions as special cases once values of the coupling constants are chosen appropriately. In addition, we obtain numerically new black hole solutions and for some specific choices of the coupling constants we derive new exact AdS black hole solutions. We also discuss the possibility of obtaining asymptotically de Sitter black hole solutions with or without an electromagnetic field.

Sums of Standard Uniform Random Variables

In this paper, we analyze the set of all possible aggregate distributions of the sum of standard uniform random variables, a simply stated yet challenging problem in the literature of distributions with given margins. Our main results are obtained for two distinct cases. In the case of dimension two, we obtain four partial characterization results. An analytical result with full generality is not available in this case, and it seems to be out of reach with existing techniques. For dimension greater or equal to three, we obtain a full characterization of the set of aggregate distributions, which is the first complete characterization result of this type in the literature for any choice of continuous marginal distributions.
