Signature of the interaction between dark sectors in the reionization process

We consider the reionization process in a cosmological model in which dark matter interacts with dark energy. Using a semi-analytical reionization model, we compute the evolution of the ionized fraction in terms of its spatial average and linear perturbations. We show that certain types of interactions between dark matter and dark energy can significantly affect the reionization history. We calculate the 21 cm signals in the interaction models, and compare the results with the predictions of the ${\rm ΛCDM}$ model.

Can Conformal and Disformal Couplings Between Dark Sectors Explain the EDGES 21cm Anomaly?

The recently announced result by EDGES points an unexpected excess in the 21 cm global brightness temperature from cosmic dawn at $z\sim 17$, potentially indicating new phenomena beyond the $Λ$CDM model. A generic cosmological model which allows conformal and disformal couplings between dark matter and dark energy is employed to investigate the impact on the 21cm absorption signal and understand the EDGES anomaly. After exploring a wide range of parameter space for couplings, we find that the coupling effects can lead to a moderate change in the Hubble parameter while a negligible change in the spin temperature in the early Universe. Consequently, the decrease of the Hubble parameter from the mixed conformal and disformal couplings can reproduce the 21cm absorption approximately in consistent with the EDGES result at $z=17.5$. However, there is still tension in corresponding parameter space between EDGES and other cosmological observations for this model.

Exponential energy-preserving methods for charged-particle dynamics in a strong and constant magnetic field

In this paper, exponential energy-preserving methods are formulated and analysed for solving charged-particle dynamics in a strong and constant magnetic field. The resulting method can exactly preserve the energy of the dynamics. Moreover, it is shown that the magnetic moment of the considered system is nearly conserved over a long time along this exponential energy-preserving method, which is proved by using modulated Fourier expansions. Other properties of the method including symmetry and convergence are also studied. An illustrated numerical experiment is carried out to demonstrate the long-time behaviour of the method.

Efficient energy-preserving methods for charged-particle dynamics

In this paper, energy-preserving methods are formulated and studied for solving charged-particle dynamics. We first formulate the scheme of energy-preserving methods and analyze its basic properties including algebraic order and symmetry. Then it is shown that these novel methods can exactly preserve the energy of charged-particle dynamics. Moreover, the long time momentum conservation is studied along such energy-preserving methods. A numerical experiment is carried out to illustrate the notable superiority of the new methods in comparison with the popular Boris method in the literature.

Strong cosmic censorship for the massless charged scalar field in the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter spacetime

It has recently been shown that the strong cosmic censorship conjecture can be violated by the massless neutral scalar field in the nearly extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole. However, the formation of such a black hole by gravitational collapse necessitates the presence of the charged sector on top of the Einstein-Maxwell system. Thus we numerically calculate the quasi-normal modes for a massless charged scalar field in the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter spacetime by generalizing the characteristic formulation to the charged case. As a result, the strong cosmic censorship turns out to be recovered by our massless charged scalar field except in the highly extremal limit $Q\rightarrow Q_m$, where the violation still occurs when the scalar field is appropriately charged.

Synthetic Dynamic PMU Data Generation: A Generative Adversarial Network Approach

This paper concerns with the production of synthetic phasor measurement unit (PMU) data for research and education purposes. Due to the confidentiality of real PMU data and no public access to the real power systems infrastructure information, the lack of credible realistic data becomes a growing concern. Instead of constructing synthetic power grids and then producing synthetic PMU measurement data by time simulations, we propose a model-free approach to directly generate synthetic PMU data. we train the generative adversarial network (GAN) with real PMU data, which can be used to generate synthetic PMU data capturing the system dynamic behaviors. To validate the sequential generation by GAN to mimic PMU data, we theoretically analyze GAN's capacity of learning system dynamics. Further by evaluating the synthetic PMU data by a proposed quantitative method, we verify GAN's potential to synthesize realistic samples and meanwhile realize that GAN model in this paper still has room to improve. Moreover it is the first time that such generative model is applied to synthesize PMU data.

Long-time analysis of extended RKN integrators for Hamiltonian systems with a solution-dependent high frequency

In this paper, we analyse the long-time behaviour of the extended RKN (ERKN) integrators for solving highly oscillatory Hamiltonian systems with a slowly varying, solution-dependent high frequency. We prove that a symmetric ERKN integrator approximately conserves a modified action and a modified total energy over long time intervals based on the technique of varying-frequency modulated Fourier expansion. An illustrative numerical experiment is carried out and the numerical results strongly support the theoretical analysis presented in this paper. As a byproduct of this work, similar long-time behaviour is also investigated for an RKN method.

Using Passivity Theory to Interpret the Dissipating Energy Flow Method

Despite wide-scale deployment of phasor measurement unit technology, locating the sources of low frequency forced oscillations in power systems is still an open research topic. The dissipating energy flow method is one source location technique which has performed remarkably well in both simulation and real time application at ISO New England. The method has several deficiencies, though, which are still poorly understood. This paper borrows the concepts of passivity and positive realness from the controls literature in order to interpret the dissipating energy flow method, pinpoint the reasons for its deficiencies, and set up a framework for improving the method. The theorems presented in this paper are then tested via simulation on a simple infinite bus power system model.

Nonlinear Modal Decoupling Based Power System Transient Stability Analysis

Nonlinear modal decoupling (NMD) was recently proposed to nonlinearly transform a multi-oscillator system into a number of decoupled oscillators which together behave the same as the original system in an extended neighborhood of the equilibrium. Each oscillator has just one degree of freedom and hence can easily be analyzed to infer the stability of the original system associated with one electromechanical mode. As the first attempt of applying the NMD methodology to realistic power system models, this paper proposes an NMD-based transient stability analysis approach. For a multi-machine power system, the approach first derives decoupled nonlinear oscillators by a coordinates transformation, and then applies Lyapunov stability analysis to oscillators to assess the stability of the original system. Nonlinear modal interaction is also considered. The approach can be efficiently applied to a large-scale power grid by conducting NMD regarding only selected modes. Case studies on a 3-machine 9-bus system and an NPCC 48-machine 140-bus system show the potentials of the approach in transient stability analysis for multi-machine systems.

Multi-view Laplacian Eigenmaps Based on Bag-of-Neighbors For RGBD Human Emotion Recognition

Human emotion recognition is an important direction in the field of biometric and information forensics. However, most existing human emotion research are based on the single RGB view. In this paper, we introduce a RGBD video-emotion dataset and a RGBD face-emotion dataset for research. To our best knowledge, this may be the first RGBD video-emotion dataset. We propose a new supervised nonlinear multi-view laplacian eigenmaps (MvLE) approach and a multihidden-layer out-of-sample network (MHON) for RGB-D humanemotion recognition. To get better representations of RGB view and depth view, MvLE is used to map the training set of both views from original space into the common subspace. As RGB view and depth view lie in different spaces, a new distance metric bag of neighbors (BON) used in MvLE can get the similar distributions of the two views. Finally, MHON is used to get the low-dimensional representations of test data and predict their labels. MvLE can deal with the cases that RGB view and depth view have different size of features, even different number of samples and classes. And our methods can be easily extended to more than two views. The experiment results indicate the effectiveness of our methods over some state-of-art methods.

Attention-based sequence-to-sequence model for speech recognition: development of state-of-the-art system on LibriSpeech and its application to non-native English

Recent research has shown that attention-based sequence-to-sequence models such as Listen, Attend, and Spell (LAS) yield comparable results to state-of-the-art ASR systems on various tasks. In this paper, we describe the development of such a system and demonstrate its performance on two tasks: first we achieve a new state-of-the-art word error rate of 3.43% on the test clean subset of LibriSpeech English data; second on non-native English speech, including both read speech and spontaneous speech, we obtain very competitive results compared to a conventional system built with the most updated Kaldi recipe.

A Fully Self-Consistent Cosmological Simulation Pipeline for Interacting Dark Energy Models

We devise a fully self-consistent simulation pipeline for the first time to study the interaction between dark matter and dark energy. We perform convergence tests and show that our code is accurate on different scales. Using the parameters constrained by Planck, Type Ia Supernovae, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) and Hubble constant observations, we perform cosmological N-body simulations. We calculate the resulting matter power spectra and halo mass functions for four different interacting dark energy models. In addition to the dark matter density distribution, we also show the inhomogeneous density distribution of dark energy. With this new simulation pipeline, we can further refine and constrain interacting dark energy models.

Power System Transient Stability Analysis Using Truncated Taylor Expansion Systems

Small signal analysis is a special case of analytical approaches using Taylor expansions of power system differential equations with the truncation performed at order one. The truncated Taylor expansions (TTEs) at higher orders can lead to better approaches for stability analysis by considering higher order nonlinearities, e.g. normal form, modal series and nonlinear modal decoupling. This paper presents fundamental studies on how accurate transient stability analysis results can be obtained from the TTE systems compared to that on the original system. The analytical investigation is conducted on single-machine-infinite-bus power systems. Conclusions are drawn from there and verified on two multi-machine power systems by extensive numerical simulations.

Symmetric and symplectic exponential integrators for nonlinear Hamiltonian systems

This letter studies symmetric and symplectic exponential integrators when applied to numerically computing nonlinear Hamiltonian systems. We first establish the symmetry and symplecticity conditions of exponential integrators and then show that these conditions are extensions of the symmetry and symplecticity conditions of Runge-Kutta methods. Based on these conditions, some symmetric and symplectic exponential integrators up to order four are derived. Two numerical experiments are carried out and the results demonstrate the remarkable numerical behavior of the new exponential integrators in comparison with some symmetric and symplectic Runge-Kutta methods in the literature.

Long-term analysis of symplectic or symmetric extended RKN methods for nonlinear wave equations

This paper analyses the long-time behaviour of one-stage symplectic or symmetric extended Runge--Kutta--Nyström (ERKN) methods when applied to nonlinear wave equations. It is shown that energy, momentum, and all harmonic actions are approximately preserved over a long time for one-stage explicit symplectic or symmetric ERKN methods when applied to nonlinear wave equations via spectral semi-discretisations. For the long-term analysis of symplectic or symmetric ERKN methods, we derive a multi-frequency modulated Fourier expansion of the ERKN method and show three almost-invariants of the modulation system. In the analysis of this paper, we neither assume symmetry for symplectic methods, nor assume symplecticity for symmetric methods. The results for symplectic and symmetric methods are obtained as a byproduct of the above analysis. We also give another proof by establishing a relationship between symplectic and symmetric ERKN methods and trigonometric integrators which have been researched for wave equations in the literature.

A privacy-preserving, decentralized and functional Bitcoin e-voting protocol

Bitcoin, as a decentralized digital currency, has caused extensive research interest. There are many studies based on related protocols on Bitcoin, Bitcoin-based voting protocols also received attention in related literature. In this paper, we propose a Bitcoin-based decentralized privacy-preserving voting mechanism. It is assumed that there are n voters and m candidates. The candidate who obtains t ballots can get x Bitcoins from each voter, namely nx Bitcoins in total. We use a shuffling mechanism to protect voter's voting privacy, at the same time, decentralized threshold signatures were used to guarantee security and assign voting rights. The protocol can achieve correctness, decentralization and privacy-preservings. By contrast with other schemes, our protocol has a smaller number of transactions and can achieve a more functional voting method.

Long-term analysis of exponential integrators for highly oscillatory conservative systems

In this paper, we investigate the long-time near-conservations of energy and kinetic energy by the widely used exponential integrators to highly oscillatory conservative systems. The modulated Fourier expansions of two kinds of exponential integrators have been constructed and the long-time numerical conservations of energy and kinetic energy are obtained by deriving two almost-invariants of the expansions. Practical examples of the methods are given and the theoretical results are confirmed and demonstrated by a numerical experiment.
