The chiral phase transition with a chiral chemical potential in the framework of Dyson-Schwinger equations

Within the framework of Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs), we discuss the chiral phase transition of QCD with a chiral chemical potential $μ_5$ as an additional scale. We focus especially on the issues related to the widely accepted as well as interested critical end point (CEP). With the help of a scalar susceptibility, we find that there might be no CEP$_5$ in the $T-μ_5$ plane, and the phase transition in the $T-μ_5$ plane might be totally crossover when $μ<50$ MeV, which has apparent consistency with the Lattice QCD calculation. Our study may also provide some useful hints to some other studies related to $μ_5$.

An Analytical Formulation of Power System Oscillation Frequency

This letter proposes an analytical approach to formulate the power system oscillation frequency under a large disturbance. A fact is revealed that the oscillation frequency is only the function of the oscillation amplitude when the system's model and operating condition are fixed. Case studies also show that this function is damping-insensitive and could be applied to an inter-area model of a multi-machine power system.

Large Scale Purchase Prediction with Historical User Actions on B2C Online Retail Platform

This paper describes the solution of Bazinga Team for Tmall Recommendation Prize 2014. With real-world user action data provided by Tmall, one of the largest B2C online retail platforms in China, this competition requires to predict future user purchases on Tmall website. Predictions are judged on F1Score, which considers both precision and recall for fair evaluation. The data set provided by Tmall contains more than half billion action records from over ten million distinct users. Such massive data volume poses a big challenge, and drives competitors to write every single program in MapReduce fashion and run it on distributed cluster. We model the purchase prediction problem as standard machine learning problem, and mainly employ regression and classification methods as single models. Individual models are then aggregated in a two-stage approach, using linear regression for blending, and finally a linear ensemble of blended models. The competition is approaching the end but still in running during writing this paper. In the end, our team achieves F1Score 6.11 and ranks 7th (out of 7,276 teams in total).

Hilbert schemes of rational curves on Fano hypersurfaces

In this paper we try to further explore the linear model of the moduli of rational maps. Our attempt yields following results. Let $X\subset \mathbf P^n$ be a generic hypersurface of degree $h$. Let $R_d(X, h)$ denote the open set of the Hilbert scheme parameterizing irreducible rational curves of degree $d$ on $X$. We obtain that (1) If $4\leq h\leq n-1$, $R_d(X, h)$ is an integral, local complete intersection of dimension \begin{equation} (n+1-h)d+n-4. \end{equation} (2) If furthermore $(h^2-n)d+h\leq 0$ and $h\geq 4$, in addition to part (1), $R_d(X, h)$ is also rationally connected.

Charged Scalar Perturbations around Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger Black Holes

We examine the stability of the Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GHS) black hole under charged scalar perturbations. We find that different from the neutral scalar field perturbations, only two numerical methods, such as the continued fraction method and the asymptotic iteration method, can keep high efficiency and accuracy requirements in the frequency domain computations. The comparisons of the efficiency between these two methods have also been done. Employing the appropriate numerical method, we show that the GHS black hole is always stable against charged scalar perturbations. This is different from the result obtained in the de Sitter and Anti-de Sitter black holes. Furthermore we argue that in the GHS black hole background there is no amplification of the incident charged scalar wave to cause the superradiance, so that the superradiant instability cannot exist in this spacetime.

Thermodynamics of rotating black holes with scalar hair in three dimensions

Introducing a new form of scalar potential $V(ϕ)$, we derive a proper form of the rotating black hole solution in three-dimensional Einstein gravity with nonminimally coupled scalar field and find that the first law of thermodynamics of this new rotating hairy black hole can be protected, where the scalar field parameter $B$ is constrained to relate to the black hole size. We also disclose the Hawking-Page phase transition between this rotating hairy black holes and the pure thermal radiation. Moreover, we study phase transitions between this rotating hairy black hole and rotating BTZ black hole. Considering the matchings for the temperature and angular momentum, we find that the rotating BTZ black hole always has smaller free energy which is a thermodynamically more preferred phase. Additionally, we evaluate the thermodynamics of the rotating black hole with minimally coupled scalar hair in three dimensions, which exhibits that the thermodynamical behaviors of this rotating hairy black hole are very similar to those of the rotating black hole with nonminimally coupled scalar hair.

Implications of Fermi-LAT observations on the origin of IceCube neutrinos

The IceCube (IC) collaboration recently reported the detection of TeV-PeV extraterrestrial neutrinos whose origin is yet unknown. By the photon-neutrino connection in $pp$ and $pγ$ interactions, we use the \fermi-LAT observations to constrain the origin of the IC detected neutrinos. We find that Galactic origins, i.e., the diffuse Galactic neutrinos due to cosmic ray (CR) propagation in the Milky Way, and the neutrinos from the Galactic point sources, may not produce the IC neutrino flux, thus these neutrinos should be of extragalactic origin. Moreover, the extragalactic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) may not account for the IC neutrino flux, the jets of active galactic nuclei may not produce the IC neutrino spectrum, but the starburst galaxies (SBGs) may be promising sources. As suggested by the consistency between the IC detected neutrino flux and the Waxman-Bahcall bound, GRBs in SBGs may be the sources of both the ultrahigh energy, $>10^{19}$eV, CRs and the $1-100$~PeV CRs that produce the IC detected TeV-PeV neutrinos.

Multibrane DGP model: Our universe as a stack of $(2+1)$-dim branes

We consider scenario in which our $(3+1)$-dim universe is actually a dense stack of multiple parallel $(2+1)$-dim branes. For this purpose, we generalize the DGP model to a multi-brane case. We solve for the propagation of the scalar field and gravity in this setup. At short distances (high momenta) along the branes interactions follow the $(2+1)$-dim laws, while at large distances (low momenta) interactions follow the usual $(3+1)$-dim laws. This feature is inherited from the original DGP model. In the direction perpendicular to the brane, we show that interactions become $(3+1)$-dim at low momenta which are unable to resolve the interbrane separation. Thus, this is one of the explicit constructs of the "vanishing dimensions" scenario where high energy physics appears to be lower dimensional rather than higher dimensional.

Formation of Fermi surfaces and the appearance of liquid phases in holographic theories with hyperscaling violation

We consider a holographic fermionic system in which the fermions are interacting with a U(1) gauge field in the presence of a dilaton field in a gravity bulk of a charged black hole with hyperscaling violation. Using both analytical and numerical methods, we investigate the properties of the infrared and ultaviolet Green's functions of the holographic fermionic system. Studying the spectral functions of the system, we find that as the hyperscaling violation exponent is varied, the fermionic system possesses Fermi, non-Fermi, marginal-Fermi and log-oscillating liquid phases. Various liquid phases of the fermionic system with hyperscaling violation are also generated with the variation of the fermionic mass. We also explore the properties of the flat band and the Fermi surface of the non-relativistic fermionic fixed point dual to the hyperscaling violation gravity.

Rational curves on hypersurfaces

In this paper, we prove three related results; (1) Extension of our result in [10] to all generic hypersurfaces. More precisely, the normal sheaf of a generic rational map $c_0$ to a generic hypersurface $X_0$ of $\mathbf P^n, n\geq 4$ has a vanishing higher cohomology, \begin{equation} H^1(N_{c_0/X_0})=0. \end{equation} As applications we give (2) A solution to a Voisin's conjecture [9] on a covering of a generic hypersurface by rational curves (3) A classification of rational curves on hypersurfaces of general type--a solution to another Voisin's conjecture [9].

Signature of the Van der Waals like small-large charged AdS black hole phase transition in quasinormal modes

We calculate the quasinormal modes of massless scalar perturbations around small and large four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-Anti de Sitter (RN-AdS) black holes. We find a dramatic change in the slopes of quasinormal frequencies in small and large black holes near the critical point where the Van der Waals like thermodynamic phase transition happens. This further supports that the quasinormal mode can be a dynamic probe of the thermodynamic phase transition.

Critical behavior of charged Gauss-Bonnet AdS black holes in the grand canonical ensemble

We study the thermodynamics in the grand canonical ensemble of D-dimensional charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes in the extended phase space. We find that the usual small-large black hole phase transition, which exhibits analogy with the Van de Waals liquid-gas system holds in five-dimensional spherical charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes when its potential is fixed within the range $0<Φ<\frac{\sqrt{3}π}{4}$. For the other higher dimensional and topological charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes, there is no such phase transition. In the limiting case, Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes, with vanishing Gauss-Bonnet parameter, there is no critical behavior in the grand canonical ensemble. This result holds independent of the spacetime dimensions and topologies. We also examine the behavior of physical quantities in the vicinity of the critical point in the five-dimensional spherical charged Gauss-Bonnet-AdS black holes.

Stability of Reissner-Nordström black hole in de Sitter background under charged scalar perturbation

We find a new instability in the four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes against charged scalar perturbations with vanishing angular momentum, $l=0$. We show that such an instability is caused by superradiance. The instability does not occur for an larger angular index, as explicitely proven for $l=1$. Our results are obtained from a numerical investigation of the time domain profiles of the perturbations.

Sequential Click Prediction for Sponsored Search with Recurrent Neural Networks

Click prediction is one of the fundamental problems in sponsored search. Most of existing studies took advantage of machine learning approaches to predict ad click for each event of ad view independently. However, as observed in the real-world sponsored search system, user's behaviors on ads yield high dependency on how the user behaved along with the past time, especially in terms of what queries she submitted, what ads she clicked or ignored, and how long she spent on the landing pages of clicked ads, etc. Inspired by these observations, we introduce a novel framework based on Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN). Compared to traditional methods, this framework directly models the dependency on user's sequential behaviors into the click prediction process through the recurrent structure in RNN. Large scale evaluations on the click-through logs from a commercial search engine demonstrate that our approach can significantly improve the click prediction accuracy, compared to sequence-independent approaches.

Extreme Negative Dependence and Risk Aggregation

We introduce the concept of an extremely negatively dependent (END) sequence of random variables with a given common marginal distribution. The END structure, as a new benchmark for negative dependence, is comparable to comonotonicity and independence. We show that an END sequence always exists for any given marginal distributions with a finite mean and we provide a probabilistic construction. Through such a construction, the partial sum of identically distributed but dependent random variables is controlled by a random variable that depends only on the marginal distribution of the sequence. The new concept and derived results are used to obtain asymptotic bounds for risk aggregation with dependence uncertainty.

Superradiant instability of Kerr-de Sitter black holes in scalar-tensor theory

We investigate in detail the mechanism of superradiance to render the instability of Kerr-de Sitter black holes in scalar-tensor gravity. Our results provide more clues to examine the scalar-tensor gravity in the astrophysical black holes in the universe with cosmological constant. We also discuss the spontaneous scalarization in the de Sitter background and find that this instability can also happen in the spherical de Sitter configuration in a special style.
