Beyond the Visible: Benchmarking Occlusion Perception in Multimodal Large Language Models

Occlusion perception, a critical foundation for human-level spatial understanding, embodies the challenge of integrating visual recognition and reasoning. Though multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities, their performance on occlusion perception remains under-explored. To address this gap, we introduce O-Bench, the first visual question answering (VQA) benchmark specifically designed for occlusion perception. Based on SA-1B, we construct 1,365 images featuring semantically coherent occlusion scenarios through a novel layered synthesis approach. Upon this foundation, we annotate 4,588 question-answer pairs in total across five tailored tasks, employing a reliable, semi-automatic workflow. Our extensive evaluation of 22 representative MLLMs against the human baseline reveals a significant performance gap between current MLLMs and humans, which, we find, cannot be sufficiently bridged by model scaling or thinking process. We further identify three typical failure patterns, including an overly conservative bias, a fragile gestalt prediction, and a struggle with quantitative tasks. We believe O-Bench can not only provide a vital evaluation tool for occlusion perception, but also inspire the development of MLLMs for better visual intelligence. Our benchmark will be made publicly available upon paper publication.

EASTER: Embedding Aggregation-based Heterogeneous Models Training in Vertical Federated Learning

Vertical federated learning has garnered significant attention as it allows clients to train machine learning models collaboratively without sharing local data, which protects the client's local private data. However, existing VFL methods face challenges when dealing with heterogeneous local models among participants, which affects optimization convergence and generalization. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a novel approach called Vertical federated learning for training multiple Heterogeneous models (VFedMH). VFedMH focuses on aggregating the local embeddings of each participant's knowledge during forward propagation. To protect the participants' local embedding values, we propose an embedding protection method based on lightweight blinding factors. In particular, participants obtain local embedding using local heterogeneous models. Then the passive party, who owns only features of the sample, injects the blinding factor into the local embedding and sends it to the active party. The active party aggregates local embeddings to obtain global knowledge embeddings and sends them to passive parties. The passive parties then utilize the global embeddings to propagate forward on their local heterogeneous networks. However, the passive party does not own the sample labels, so the local model gradient cannot be calculated locally. To overcome this limitation, the active party assists the passive party in computing its local heterogeneous model gradients. Then, each participant trains their local model using the heterogeneous model gradients. The objective is to minimize the loss value of their respective local heterogeneous models. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate that VFedMH can simultaneously train multiple heterogeneous models with heterogeneous optimization and outperform some recent methods in model performance.

PLA: Prompt Learning Attack against Text-to-Image Generative Models

Text-to-Image (T2I) models have gained widespread adoption across various applications. Despite the success, the potential misuse of T2I models poses significant risks of generating Not-Safe-For-Work (NSFW) content. To investigate the vulnerability of T2I models, this paper delves into adversarial attacks to bypass the safety mechanisms under black-box settings. Most previous methods rely on word substitution to search adversarial prompts. Due to limited search space, this leads to suboptimal performance compared to gradient-based training. However, black-box settings present unique challenges to training gradient-driven attack methods, since there is no access to the internal architecture and parameters of T2I models. To facilitate the learning of adversarial prompts in black-box settings, we propose a novel prompt learning attack framework (PLA), where insightful gradient-based training tailored to black-box T2I models is designed by utilizing multimodal similarities. Experiments show that our new method can effectively attack the safety mechanisms of black-box T2I models including prompt filters and post-hoc safety checkers with a high success rate compared to state-of-the-art methods. Test-Time Learning for Large Language Models

While Large Language Models (LLMs) have exhibited remarkable emergent capabilities through extensive pre-training, they still face critical limitations in generalizing to specialized domains and handling diverse linguistic variations, known as distribution shifts. In this paper, we propose a Test-Time Learning (TTL) paradigm for LLMs, namely TLM, which dynamically adapts LLMs to target domains using only unlabeled test data during testing. Specifically, we first provide empirical evidence and theoretical insights to reveal that more accurate predictions from LLMs can be achieved by minimizing the input perplexity of the unlabeled test data. Based on this insight, we formulate the Test-Time Learning process of LLMs as input perplexity minimization, enabling self-supervised enhancement of LLM performance. Furthermore, we observe that high-perplexity samples tend to be more informative for model optimization. Accordingly, we introduce a Sample Efficient Learning Strategy that actively selects and emphasizes these high-perplexity samples for test-time updates. Lastly, to mitigate catastrophic forgetting and ensure adaptation stability, we adopt Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) instead of full-parameter optimization, which allows lightweight model updates while preserving more original knowledge from the model. We introduce the AdaptEval benchmark for TTL and demonstrate through experiments that TLM improves performance by at least 20% compared to original LLMs on domain knowledge adaptation.

Bi-directional Self-Registration for Misaligned Infrared-Visible Image Fusion

Acquiring accurately aligned multi-modal image pairs is fundamental for achieving high-quality multi-modal image fusion. To address the lack of ground truth in current multi-modal image registration and fusion methods, we propose a novel self-supervised \textbf{B}i-directional \textbf{S}elf-\textbf{R}egistration framework (\textbf{B-SR}). Specifically, B-SR utilizes a proxy data generator (PDG) and an inverse proxy data generator (IPDG) to achieve self-supervised global-local registration. Visible-infrared image pairs with spatially misaligned differences are aligned to obtain global differences through the registration module. The same image pairs are processed by PDG, such as cropping, flipping, stitching, etc., and then aligned to obtain local differences. IPDG converts the obtained local differences into pseudo-global differences, which are used to perform global-local difference consistency with the global differences. Furthermore, aiming at eliminating the effect of modal gaps on the registration module, we design a neighborhood dynamic alignment loss to achieve cross-modal image edge alignment. Extensive experiments on misaligned multi-modal images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in multi-modal image alignment and fusion against the competing methods. Our code will be publicly available.

Baichuan 2: Open Large-scale Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance on a variety of natural language tasks based on just a few examples of natural language instructions, reducing the need for extensive feature engineering. However, most powerful LLMs are closed-source or limited in their capability for languages other than English. In this technical report, we present Baichuan 2, a series of large-scale multilingual language models containing 7 billion and 13 billion parameters, trained from scratch, on 2.6 trillion tokens. Baichuan 2 matches or outperforms other open-source models of similar size on public benchmarks like MMLU, CMMLU, GSM8K, and HumanEval. Furthermore, Baichuan 2 excels in vertical domains such as medicine and law. We will release all pre-training model checkpoints to benefit the research community in better understanding the training dynamics of Baichuan 2.

Dynamic Compressing Prompts for Efficient Inference of Large Language Models

Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown outstanding performance across a variety of tasks, partly due to advanced prompting techniques. However, these techniques often require lengthy prompts, which increase computational costs and can hinder performance because of the limited context windows of LLMs. While prompt compression is a straightforward solution, existing methods confront the challenges of retaining essential information, adapting to context changes, and remaining effective across different tasks. To tackle these issues, we propose a task-agnostic method called Dynamic Compressing Prompts (LLM-DCP). Our method reduces the number of prompt tokens while aiming to preserve the performance as much as possible. We model prompt compression as a Markov Decision Process (MDP), enabling the DCP-Agent to sequentially remove redundant tokens by adapting to dynamic contexts and retaining crucial content. We develop a reward function for training the DCP-Agent that balances the compression rate, the quality of the LLM output, and the retention of key information. This allows for prompt token reduction without needing an external black-box LLM. Inspired by the progressive difficulty adjustment in curriculum learning, we introduce a Hierarchical Prompt Compression (HPC) training strategy that gradually increases the compression difficulty, enabling the DCP-Agent to learn an effective compression method that maintains information integrity. Experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art techniques, especially at higher compression rates. The code for our approach will be available at https://github.com/Fhujinwu/DCP.

Improving Transferable Targeted Attacks with Feature Tuning Mixup

Deep neural networks (DNNs) exhibit vulnerability to adversarial examples that can transfer across different DNN models. A particularly challenging problem is developing transferable targeted attacks that can mislead DNN models into predicting specific target classes. While various methods have been proposed to enhance attack transferability, they often incur substantial computational costs while yielding limited improvements. Recent clean feature mixup methods use random clean features to perturb the feature space but lack optimization for disrupting adversarial examples, overlooking the advantages of attack-specific perturbations. In this paper, we propose Feature Tuning Mixup (FTM), a novel method that enhances targeted attack transferability by combining both random and optimized noises in the feature space. FTM introduces learnable feature perturbations and employs an efficient stochastic update strategy for optimization. These learnable perturbations facilitate the generation of more robust adversarial examples with improved transferability. We further demonstrate that attack performance can be enhanced through an ensemble of multiple FTM-perturbed surrogate models. Extensive experiments on the ImageNet-compatible dataset across various DNN models demonstrate that our method achieves significant improvements over state-of-the-art methods while maintaining low computational cost.

Mobius: Text to Seamless Looping Video Generation via Latent Shift

We present Mobius, a novel method to generate seamlessly looping videos from text descriptions directly without any user annotations, thereby creating new visual materials for the multi-media presentation. Our method repurposes the pre-trained video latent diffusion model for generating looping videos from text prompts without any training. During inference, we first construct a latent cycle by connecting the starting and ending noise of the videos. Given that the temporal consistency can be maintained by the context of the video diffusion model, we perform multi-frame latent denoising by gradually shifting the first-frame latent to the end in each step. As a result, the denoising context varies in each step while maintaining consistency throughout the inference process. Moreover, the latent cycle in our method can be of any length. This extends our latent-shifting approach to generate seamless looping videos beyond the scope of the video diffusion model's context. Unlike previous cinemagraphs, the proposed method does not require an image as appearance, which will restrict the motions of the generated results. Instead, our method can produce more dynamic motion and better visual quality. We conduct multiple experiments and comparisons to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, demonstrating its efficacy in different scenarios. All the code will be made available.

Baichuan-Omni-1.5 Technical Report

We introduce Baichuan-Omni-1.5, an omni-modal model that not only has omni-modal understanding capabilities but also provides end-to-end audio generation capabilities. To achieve fluent and high-quality interaction across modalities without compromising the capabilities of any modality, we prioritized optimizing three key aspects. First, we establish a comprehensive data cleaning and synthesis pipeline for multimodal data, obtaining about 500B high-quality data (text, audio, and vision). Second, an audio-tokenizer (Baichuan-Audio-Tokenizer) has been designed to capture both semantic and acoustic information from audio, enabling seamless integration and enhanced compatibility with MLLM. Lastly, we designed a multi-stage training strategy that progressively integrates multimodal alignment and multitask fine-tuning, ensuring effective synergy across all modalities. Baichuan-Omni-1.5 leads contemporary models (including GPT4o-mini and MiniCPM-o 2.6) in terms of comprehensive omni-modal capabilities. Notably, it achieves results comparable to leading models such as Qwen2-VL-72B across various multimodal medical benchmarks.

Mobile Augmented Reality Framework with Fusional Localization and Pose Estimation

As a novel way of presenting information, augmented reality (AR) enables people to interact with the physical world in a direct and intuitive way. While there are some mobile AR products implemented with specific hardware at a high cost, the software approaches of AR implementation on mobile platforms(such as smartphones, tablet PC, etc.) are still far from practical use. GPS-based mobile AR systems usually perform poorly due to the inaccurate positioning in the indoor environment. Previous vision-based pose estimation methods need to continuously track predefined markers within a short distance, which greatly degrade user experience. This paper first conducts a comprehensive study of the state-of-the-art AR and localization systems on mobile platforms. Then, we propose an effective indoor mobile AR framework. In the framework, a fusional localization method and a new pose estimation implementation are developed to increase the overall matching rate and thus improving AR display accuracy. Experiments show that our framework has higher performance than approaches purely based on images or Wi-Fi signals. We achieve low average error distances (0.61-0.81m) and accurate matching rates (77%-82%) when the average sampling grid length is set to 0.5m.

CustomTTT: Motion and Appearance Customized Video Generation via Test-Time Training

Benefiting from large-scale pre-training of text-video pairs, current text-to-video (T2V) diffusion models can generate high-quality videos from the text description. Besides, given some reference images or videos, the parameter-efficient fine-tuning method, i.e. LoRA, can generate high-quality customized concepts, e.g., the specific subject or the motions from a reference video. However, combining the trained multiple concepts from different references into a single network shows obvious artifacts. To this end, we propose CustomTTT, where we can joint custom the appearance and the motion of the given video easily. In detail, we first analyze the prompt influence in the current video diffusion model and find the LoRAs are only needed for the specific layers for appearance and motion customization. Besides, since each LoRA is trained individually, we propose a novel test-time training technique to update parameters after combination utilizing the trained customized models. We conduct detailed experiments to verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Our method outperforms several state-of-the-art works in both qualitative and quantitative evaluations.

Jointly RS Image Deblurring and Super-Resolution with Adjustable-Kernel and Multi-Domain Attention

Remote Sensing (RS) image deblurring and Super-Resolution (SR) are common tasks in computer vision that aim at restoring RS image detail and spatial scale, respectively. However, real-world RS images often suffer from a complex combination of global low-resolution (LR) degeneration and local blurring degeneration. Although carefully designed deblurring and SR models perform well on these two tasks individually, a unified model that performs jointly RS image deblurring and super-resolution (JRSIDSR) task is still challenging due to the vital dilemma of reconstructing the global and local degeneration simultaneously. Additionally, existing methods struggle to capture the interrelationship between deblurring and SR processes, leading to suboptimal results. To tackle these issues, we give a unified theoretical analysis of RS images' spatial and blur degeneration processes and propose a dual-branch parallel network named AKMD-Net for the JRSIDSR task. AKMD-Net consists of two main branches: deblurring and super-resolution branches. In the deblurring branch, we design a pixel-adjustable kernel block (PAKB) to estimate the local and spatial-varying blur kernels. In the SR branch, a multi-domain attention block (MDAB) is proposed to capture the global contextual information enhanced with high-frequency details. Furthermore, we develop an adaptive feature fusion (AFF) module to model the contextual relationships between the deblurring and SR branches. Finally, we design an adaptive Wiener loss (AW Loss) to depress the prior noise in the reconstructed images. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed AKMD-Net achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) quantitative and qualitative performance on commonly used RS image datasets. The source code is publicly available at https://github.com/zpc456/AKMD-Net.

Customize Segment Anything Model for Multi-Modal Semantic Segmentation with Mixture of LoRA Experts

The recent Segment Anything Model (SAM) represents a significant breakthrough in scaling segmentation models, delivering strong performance across various downstream applications in the RGB modality. However, directly applying SAM to emerging visual modalities, such as depth and event data results in suboptimal performance in multi-modal segmentation tasks. In this paper, we make the first attempt to adapt SAM for multi-modal semantic segmentation by proposing a Mixture of Low-Rank Adaptation Experts (MoE-LoRA) tailored for different input visual modalities. By training only the MoE-LoRA layers while keeping SAM's weights frozen, SAM's strong generalization and segmentation capabilities can be preserved for downstream tasks. Specifically, to address cross-modal inconsistencies, we propose a novel MoE routing strategy that adaptively generates weighted features across modalities, enhancing multi-modal feature integration. Additionally, we incorporate multi-scale feature extraction and fusion by adapting SAM's segmentation head and introducing an auxiliary segmentation head to combine multi-scale features for improved segmentation performance effectively. Extensive experiments were conducted on three multi-modal benchmarks: DELIVER, MUSES, and MCubeS. The results consistently demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art approaches across diverse scenarios. Notably, under the particularly challenging condition of missing modalities, our approach exhibits a substantial performance gain, achieving an improvement of 32.15% compared to existing methods.

Florence-VL: Enhancing Vision-Language Models with Generative Vision Encoder and Depth-Breadth Fusion

We present Florence-VL, a new family of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) with enriched visual representations produced by Florence-2, a generative vision foundation model. Unlike the widely used CLIP-style vision transformer trained by contrastive learning, Florence-2 can capture different levels and aspects of visual features, which are more versatile to be adapted to diverse downstream tasks. We propose a novel feature-fusion architecture and an innovative training recipe that effectively integrates Florence-2's visual features into pretrained LLMs, such as Phi 3.5 and LLama 3. In particular, we propose "depth-breath fusion (DBFusion)" to fuse the visual features extracted from different depths and under multiple prompts. Our model training is composed of end-to-end pretraining of the whole model followed by finetuning of the projection layer and the LLM, on a carefully designed recipe of diverse open-source datasets that include high-quality image captions and instruction-tuning pairs. Our quantitative analysis and visualization of Florence-VL's visual features show its advantages over popular vision encoders on vision-language alignment, where the enriched depth and breath play important roles. Florence-VL achieves significant improvements over existing state-of-the-art MLLMs across various multi-modal and vision-centric benchmarks covering general VQA, perception, hallucination, OCR, Chart, knowledge-intensive understanding, etc. To facilitate future research, our models and the complete training recipe are open-sourced. https://github.com/JiuhaiChen/Florence-VL

Efficient Prompting for LLM-based Generative Internet of Things

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capacities on various tasks, and integrating the capacities of LLMs into the Internet of Things (IoT) applications has drawn much research attention recently. Due to security concerns, many institutions avoid accessing state-of-the-art commercial LLM services, requiring the deployment and utilization of open-source LLMs in a local network setting. However, open-source LLMs usually have more limitations regarding their performance, such as their arithmetic calculation and reasoning capacities, and practical systems of applying LLMs to IoT have yet to be well-explored. Therefore, we propose a LLM-based Generative IoT (GIoT) system deployed in the local network setting in this study. To alleviate the limitations of LLMs and provide service with competitive performance, we apply prompt engineering methods to enhance the capacities of the open-source LLMs, design a Prompt Management Module and a Post-processing Module to manage the tailored prompts for different tasks and process the results generated by the LLMs. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system, we discuss a challenging Table Question Answering (Table-QA) task as a case study of the proposed system, as tabular data is usually more challenging than plain text because of their complex structures, heterogeneous data types and sometimes huge sizes. We conduct comprehensive experiments on two popular Table-QA datasets, and the results show that our proposal can achieve competitive performance compared with state-of-the-art LLMs, demonstrating that the proposed LLM-based GIoT system can provide competitive performance with tailored prompting methods and is easily extensible to new tasks without training.

Cross-Organ Domain Adaptive Neural Network for Pancreatic Endoscopic Ultrasound Image Segmentation

Accurate segmentation of lesions in pancreatic endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) images is crucial for effective diagnosis and treatment. However, the collection of enough crisp EUS images for effective diagnosis is arduous. Recently, domain adaptation (DA) has been employed to address these challenges by leveraging related knowledge from other domains. Most DA methods only focus on multi-view representations of the same organ, which makes it still tough to clearly depict the tumor lesion area with limited semantic information. Although transferring homogeneous similarity from different organs could benefit the issue, there is a lack of relevant work due to the enormous domain gap between them. To address these challenges, we propose the Cross-Organ Tumor Segmentation Networks (COTS-Nets), consisting of a universal network and an auxiliary network. The universal network utilizes boundary loss to learn common boundary information of different tumors, enabling accurate delineation of tumors in EUS despite limited and low-quality data. Simultaneously, we incorporate consistency loss in the universal network to align the prediction of pancreatic EUS with tumor boundaries from other organs to mitigate the domain gap. To further reduce the cross-organ domain gap, the auxiliary network integrates multi-scale features from different organs, aiding the universal network in acquiring domain-invariant knowledge. Systematic experiments demonstrate that COTS-Nets significantly improves the accuracy of pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Additionally, we developed the Pancreatic Cancer Endoscopic Ultrasound (PCEUS) dataset, comprising 501 pathologically confirmed pancreatic EUS images, to facilitate model development.

ISO: Overlap of Computation and Communication within Seqenence For LLM Inference

In the realm of Large Language Model (LLM) inference, the inherent structure of transformer models coupled with the multi-GPU tensor parallelism strategy leads to a sequential execution of computation and communication. This results in substantial underutilization of computing resources during the communication phase. To mitigate this inefficiency, various techniques have been developed to optimize the use of computational power throughout the communication process. These strategies primarily involve overlapping matrix computations and communications, as well as interleaving micro-batches across different requests. Nonetheless, these approaches either fall short of achieving ideal overlap or impose certain limitations on their application. To overcome these challenges, this paper introduces a novel strategy for computation-communication overlap that operates at the sequence level. This method not only enhances the degree of overlap but also minimizes the constraints on its applicability. Experimental evaluations conducted using 30b/70b models have demonstrated significant improvements in efficiency. Specifically, the proposed technique has been shown to reduce time consumption by approximately 35% on 4090 GPU and by roughly 15% on A800 GPU during the prefill stage of LLM inference.
